Skateboard Restoration - Wheels Made From Scratch!

- Опубликовано: 4 авг 2024
- In this video I restored an old skateboard. The skateboard was recovered from a house fire that was started from a lightning strike. I purchased it from an auction where all the proceeds were donated to the family whose house burned down.
I wanted to stick to the lightning theme in this restore. Once I got the skateboard taken apart I cut out a new deck from a piece of pine plywood. The deck was then covered in a topcoat resin.
The wheels were my next task. The original wheels were old clay wheels found on early skateboards in the 1960's. This was very difficult and took many tries to get it right. I crushed up clay pots and mixed them with a 2 part polyurethane. Once I got the mold and mixture right I was happy with the wheels. I used a newer style wheel to make the mold so that I could use updated skateboard bearings.
In the end my cat Remington got the honors of testing out the refreshed skateboard!
I hope you guys enjoyed the video, if you do leave a like and a comment. Subscribe if you would like to see more awesome content ;).

restorations like this, while excellent, always make me think about the ship of Theseus.
That's exactly what I'm thinking. It's great work, but it doesn't feel like a true restoration
Ummm….Vision why are you commenting on videos?
I'm glad I'm not the only one!!
Me too, I would've sealed the original deck in clear resin, and then shaped the resin to what the deck's original silhouette would have been, simply to have retained an original component. IMHuO, this was a 'tribute project with donor pieces', rather than 'a restoration'. (Even though the result was awesome)
You beat me to the same comment.
Ohhhh that 10kV etching was just beautiful. Never seen that done before. Well done, great video!
You are not a craftsman. You are a magician! Well, actually a magical craftsman. Your understanding and skill in the use of various chemicals and solutions is astounding. I have some skills but no where near your level. It is a master class just watching you work. Thanks
Beautiful restoration. Love the "electric" design.
Sure hope you saved those clay wheels & the bearing race nuts, they should bring really good money from a skateboard collector. You did a nice job on the Chicago style trucks & the wheels. Hard wood makes a better deck than pine, but would not have made as Awesome of a " lighting Bolt " as you did with the pine. Overall....Well Done!!
I still have them, I plan on making a before/after display box. Should be cool
5% restoration 95 % making something new. Good work! amazing the final look of the wood!
Thanks Carlos. 🙂
Very nice touch adding the lightning bolt!
This is unique thank you for thinking outside of the box. People get tired of seeing old tools toy cars and guns
Thanks for the comment 🙂
Excellent job with the skateboard. The electrical effect was awesome. What a skilled craftsman you are!
Thank you Ronnie!
Excellent, great job in this Skateboard!!
Thanks!
Fantastic reconditioning of the parts, and the etching process on the new deck was fantastic 👍👍👍
That being said, if *I* had been undertaking this project, rather than a whole new deck, I would've sealed the original deck within a block of clear resin, and then shaped the resin to what the original deck silhouette would likely have been, if for no other reason than the fire-damaged texture of the deck was interesting, and, it would've been preserving another original component 🙂
Aside from that one area of 'doing it differently', amazing project, and fantastic craftsmanship 👍👍👍
Thank you Tim! I had lots of different ideas for this one (seal the original, make it electric, light up the wood burn) this is what I went with and I’m happy with it 🙂
you will NOT make a mostly resin skateboard deck i swear on my LIFE
i was thinking the same thing, either that or infuse the wood with resin to strengthen it
I concur.
Well done .
The electric effect is splendid!
I put the blue thumb!
👍👍👍
Thanks 🙂
That click when he pushed the new bearing into the new wheel…just *shivers*. I think I can fall asleep now.
its the coolest skateboard i have seen
This is the coolest thing I've seen recently. Wow!!!
Thank you 🙂
That was a Great Inspiration. What an awesome Restoration! Paying tribute to the board!
Thank you!
That skateboard deserves to be in a museum
Awesome work bro, Lichtenberg figures are beautiful! Great restoration and thank you for sharing!
Awesome 👍🏻👍🏻
I still can’t get over you making your own wheels 😳 I want to do that for my skates
You should encased the burnt deck in resin and make a second board. That would be cool.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Replacing the deck isn’t a restoration. 😢
Destructive power and beauty sometimes are close together. Wonderful work.
The flower pot.. i sure as hell didnt see that coming 😁
I really love how it turned out; never knew you could get a design like that by electrocuting wood ⚡
Awesome video! The branching effect made by the electricity looked so awesome.
Saw this and was thinking "cool I'll just skip to the part where I can see the end, but before I do lemme just see the beginning, then I'll skip"
...16 minutes later.....
Good vid. I can be pretty impatient but I just had to keep watching. And now I'm subscribed
Fantastic work buddy. I learned some handy tips too. Cheers
Wicked nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool resto!
Excelente como siempre y la tabla con ese diseño único. Saludos desde Venezuela ciudad de Maracaibo.
love 💕 from morrocco 🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦tanger
Those black lines he put in the skateboard made it so much better!
I love the skateboard you fixed up it's so cool and beautiful and awesome
I have slowly become addicted to restoration channels.
Same 😅
You did a beautiful job I love it …!!
so clean
so nice
so funny
so fun to watch
perfect video
This was an amazing video!! I loved what you did to the deck!!
Wow 😍😍
Questo restauro è costato un occhio della testa !!! ;)
I thought the card shuffler was my favorite to seeing this one. Fab, absolutely fab😍😍
Thanks Della!
Keep your eyes out soon as I’ll be doing something with the old deck I remade in this video 🙂
If you want, could you make another video where you'd stabilize the old burned board in epoxy resin? That one would look really cool too.
And since you are skilled enough, could you try replicating those retro trucks and put the replica trucks on the epoxy-burned board?
It would look extremely cool in the end.
That’s what I’m saying I would have used the original board and just used epoxy to get the old shape back
Time to start making skateboards lol. Great restoration!!!!
I had that board as a kid. Great job
Beautiful 😍
This is in fact awesome but at a certain point when you completely replace the main parts that are most noticeable about the skateboard (deck and wheels) I don't think this can be called a restoration anymore, yes it's awesome but I don't think that to this extent it can still be called a restoration, and yes I understand that the parts I pointed out were beyond saving but at this point call it salvaging what you can and making a new deck
Wow with electricity, it's just beautiful 😍
It's incredible, especially with the 2 opposite points meeting in the middle of the board 😍 😍 😍
What you did to remake those wheels was awesome.
Thank you for the kind words!
@@DrRestoration Not kind, just my honest opinion. You matched the wheel color so well.
Wow! Electricity through wood! It looked great!
Beautiful restoration mister beautifully restored well done
Thank you Vince!
My uncle gave me his old set of skates. Steel adjustable frames, leather straps, and those same old hard wheels. Let me tell you, they were hard as hell and you felt ever grain of sand you rode over. Might be worth a few dollars to a collector though.
Nice effect with the electricity. I've worked with high voltage, scary stuff when you're in the back of switchboard, but mostly 240/415. 1000V will jump one inch through air. I remember the experiments we did way back in tech school. I also had the pleasure of vacuuming flour out of switchboards. Fast moving flour through plastic conduit to the vacuum creates awesome amounts of static (DC) electricity and I was often hit with massive long sparks, if you're not properly grounded. It was never nice, but better than AC any day. 415V is not nice, but neither is 240. Oh, and flour dust is 50 times more explosive than coal dust.
As for loose ball bearings... I can't tell you how many times I stripped my old wooden skateboard and push-bike down to clean those bloody things, then you have to get the tension just right on the nuts, so that they're not too loose or too tight. If I'd only known about sealed bearings back then... lol.
Nice work. I hope someone paid you handsomely to pass on to that unfortunate family.
Sounds like you had some interesting times with the switchboards! I love to hear everyone’s old stories! I wish more schools had shop class and I also feel more people should attend tech schools. None the less loved the story!
@@DrRestoration Life's been a wild ride for me, Doc, all sorts of jobs and experiences, I even worked in operating theatres with doctors (At times I thought, I'd have sacked that orthopaedic surgeon if he was my apprentice, lol).
And true, shop classes were my favourites and more people should be going into trades, that are instead wasting away time in universities, often with no jobs for them in the end. I almost went to Uni after working my way via night courses from electrician to electronic technician... almost.
I hope whatever you do goes well for you.
Kind regards.
This was seriously cool. You have some great skills I wish I possessed. Thanks for the content.
I had one in 1966, it had steel wheels ! I wore it out !
Reminds me of the Sincor I restored. Reused all original deck, screws, trucks, and clay wheels. Only thing new was the bushings and pivot cups.
Excellent work and film editing! 😃👌🏼
I appreciate that David!
Good job👌🏼👏🏻👏🏻 better than brandnew 🔝🆒️🤙🏼
Thank you! 😁
I HOPE THIS PERSON HOLDS ONTO THIS TREASURE. MY DAD MADE ME A CABIN CRUISER OUT OF A PIECE OF 2X4. IT WAS SO DETAILED AND I PLAYED WITH IT FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND SOMETHING BROKE AND I DISCARDED IT. I'M OLD NOW AND I REGRET THAT I DID NOT TREASURE THIS HAND MADE BOAT MY DAD MADE. IT WAS SUCH A WORK OF ART FOR ME THEN, BUT NOW I CAN ONLY PICTURE IT IN MY HEAD AND REGRET THROWING IT AWAY.
Man you already put my ashes into it. I wish I was alive to subscribe.
Awesome 👍
9:26 made me lol! New subscriber!
Welcome Andre!
Really nice work! The only thing I would have changed is switching to precision bearings.
Thanks, it’s going on my wall. 🙂
Классная реставрация скейтборд! Спасибо за контент.
Thank you!
Но брать каждую гайку пинцетиком это сильно)
Amazing job!!!! ♥️
Tanks Eva!
Great superb excellent video! Enjoyed every fucking second!!!!!
Just cool restoration buddy 👍
Thanks friend! 🙂
Never would have thought you could boil bushings to get them soft again, especially as old as these were
I laugh out loud when I see "Ashes of nonsubscribers" LOL
Perfect job as always Bro! 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks DC!
A groove with a piece of the burnt wood would have been nice... I think. 😋
you very professional 👌 good luck 👍🏻
restoration with ASMR, very good...
That was just fantastic everything you do the non subscribers Asher to the hanger for the washers in the boiling water the little oven for sand blasting. Just so we’ll done keep on enjoying this and making great content.
Cup and cone bearings, just like those found in many bicycles. It's a cool skateboard when it has those.
Thanks, I learned a lot!
Beautiful job!
I see the Supervisor came to see the final result. Iol
Yes he did 🐈
Nice job
Awesome work! 👍
Thanks Darck Master!
Excelente restauração! Gostaria de saber como fez o shape com aquele efeito queimado? Ficou show
Wonderful!
Looks awsom ❤️
Nice job on the board 👍 your wife will not be happy you used the ninja to grind up the old pot. Finished project looks really cool. Great job.
😬
"I made a braille skateboard" may have been one of the best puns ive heard in my entire life
If ya know ya know!
Loved it, you are very talented, especially liked the board itself.
I love how the bolts were cleaned by sped up abrasion.
Ok as a skateboarder this is painful to watch like why make the wheels and the board is super thick this is just pure pain💀🥲
u got skills for sure
What a great job!
Thank you Sasha!
goodjob! いや落雷被害のチャリティーがあるとは素晴らしい!! :)
That was a good art 6:41
It's clear that nobody here rides. Nice "Braille" reference!
Это просто гениально!👍👏
Thank you!
A true example of the Ship of Theseus thought experiment
i love these videos but these are the ppl to be afraid of when they say they got time today!
Niiice I see big progress her 🤠🤠🤠
Thanks Ab! always getting better ;)
Meu Deus
Se eu coloco um VASO no liquidificador NINJA aqui em casa...
Minha mulher me mata sem eu ter tempo nem de perguntar "por que?"
Parabéns
Pelo vídeo e pela coragem
Kkkkkkkkk
🤣🤣🤣
Nice video but I won’t called restoration since you replace the entire board. In this case I would maybe use epoxy to preserve the original board and see trough. Like 👍
Looks awesome
Thank you Adam 🙂
That "Not Pee" text was really helpful. 😂
Stupend😁
The craftmanship is very nice..But the deck is usually constructed by seven layers of maple wood ( thin layers are dried and glued together ).
The deck is concave as well for steering.
The above is just a coffee table on wheels..
good job DR
literally so coool
You might be the Picasso of restoration
