Geez Rick, I have a degree in Film Scoring from Berklee (‘93) and this is the kind of analysis I love; thank you for making this content. Also, thank you for the interviews: Rosenwinkel, Metheny, May, Carter, MacAlpine, etc. I’m loving it all!!!! (I purchased your bundles to support). It’s like custom made television for me & all of your other subscribers I imagine 👍🏻👍🏻
isn't juilliard better, doe?
@@christopher-miles no.
I find these comments very interesting, I’m not sure if they’re genuine inquiries into my career or typical hateful comments from people looking to solicit an argument? My Berklee degree has helped me tremendously in my life; I’ve scored 6 feature films and several other projects and I have a very successful occupation all attributed to the education I received. However, if your questions are asking whether I believe you need to go to college to work in music……. Rick is providing you an education for “free” right here on his channel; which is why I commented in the first place. Good luck folks 👍🏻
Man, I was in town that year for MacWorld Boston as a Marketing Manager for MacZone where I was staying at the Back Bay Marriott. Arriving into town, I got checked-in in the afternoon, and I immediately walked 'round the corner to go worship at "Mecca", Berklee College. It was always a dream of mine to study there so I just had to tour the campus. I bought a Berklee sweatshirt at the bookstore that I would wear to jam sessions around Seattle to intimidate da fuq out of my local peers for the funny. I wore that that thing until it was in shreds. My Fenway Park visit was equally fun.
Thanks for keeping your cool with the trolls, I have trouble with it at times! Great to hear you are in film scoring. Trying to get my foot in the door to that world myself.
This is an absolutely brilliant score. The piece 'The Shawshank Redemption' where Andy finally escapes is one the best pieces of music I've ever heard in a film score. The way it builds and reaches a crescendo with Andy stood in the rain is genius.
I always have goosebumps with this scene
@@superchimpin I have goosebumps remembering that scene :)
I'm going to guess I've seen this movie about 10 times and it never gets old. The score is the perfect compliment to the storytelling.
Set in the 1920's to 40's, and made in the 1990's, it is incredibly timeless. This will be regularly watched and referenced for the rest of this century. It's not just a prison movie, it's a movie about life really, and particularly men's lives and behaviors, to me anyway.
If I start watching it I’m immediately chained to a couch.
@@goodun2974 easily one of the top 10 flicks of all time.
10 times LOL I've probably watched it close to 60 or 70 times. The movie will be 27 years old on Sept 23.
@@goodun2974 Agree with you 100%. I'm often disappointed by movie versions of King stories. This and The Green Mile are probably the best. Shawshank has long been one of my very favorite movies and I've probably seen it at least 10 times. The score illicits such strong emotions along with the great acting by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.
I also love the somber, delicate piano theme which repeats throughout the movie. And when Red, sitting in the back of the red truck, approaches the hayfield near the end, the oboe appears and adds an entirely new "hopeful" dimension. Thomas Newman is absolutely my favorite film and TV composer. The theme from Six Feet Under is simply incredible. But Shawshank is his undeniable masterpiece.
I also love his work on Meet Joe Black and The Road To Perdition. Two of my favorites.
Love Thomas Newman. Shawshank, Road to Perdition, and American Beauty are just magical.
As a media composer myself, I am thrilled to have this series started!
Newman is one of favorite composers, our mothers were best friends, we played together as children, I never tire of his scores. This is a brilliant analysis....
The knowledge I gain from your harmonic analysis is immeasurable, Rick. Please continue with more breakdowns of the film scoring greats...you're a true gem!
Man the more mainstream content on the main channel has been awesome, but this kind of high level film score analysis is what got me hooked on your stuff in the first place. Love that there's a new home for these kinds of videos from you.
It is a reupload of a 4-years-old video from the main channel.
One of my favorite movies. It wouldn't be without music or this score
Like father, like son.
Alfred Newman was one of the finest composers Hollywood ever heard, and one of my personal favourites.
Aw man.. that movie is up there with the very best. The entire passage with Brooks Hatlen's parole just gets me every time.
Love the movie and love the soundtrack, especially "Brooks Was Here"!
Yeah so sad
That one's heartbrakingly beautiful.
It's so sad though.
"So was Red!"
Thomas is one of my favorite film composers. Great episode! Thanks Rick! I got chastised once in a theory/composition class in college. When asked where do you think some of the best contemporary composers are doing their best work, I said in film! Boy, I got totally zinged that day!
This is why your teachers are still in that class
I was knocked out by this very piece the first time I saw the film. Quite unusual harmony, and the more hauntingly beautiful for it.
Yes to a series like this. I learned how important the score is to any production. My friend and I made children's stories in the mid 80's to give out as Christmas presents each year. We had a 4 track recorder and had voices on one track, sound effects on another and stereo music we created to fit each scene on the other two. Mixdown to cassette was an anxious hour or five as we had to do it manually without interruption. The kids provided the title and ideas, the family voices all the characters. It was a great experience. It always amazed us that playing a scene without music was so vastly different than with. We also found, more often than not, that the music we had pre recorded fit seamlessly without any planning.
Yes, Yes,Yes!! Love this Rick. This is such an emotional piece. Love the deep dive into this type of music. Would love you to do this on The Shining.
Agreed. The first 20 notes of the intro to The Shining is a brilliant expose in how to create a gripping atmosphere that absorbs the audience, resonating dread and apprehension without them even being made aware of it. Classic audiotography.
Mr Rick Beato, this is the most fantastic content on RUclips. The free knowledge and education you impart on those of us who want to understand the world of music better is amazing. Your specific analysis and concept explanation here is truly an amazing gift for everyone. Thank You.
His work in American Beauty is absolutely stellar. Some of the greatest soundtracks I’ve ever heard to this day…
Love this !! Please more on Thomas Newman 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great movie with an epic music score. You should break down more of this movie Rick. The music score adds a tremendous amount of emphasis to so many iconic scenes.
The music is done so well throughout the entire movie. Those 4 notes when the bus is moving toward Hadley are so ominous. Those 4 notes are the movie. Love them. I dont know of a movie where the back ground music is done any better. One of my favorite movies of all time and the music is a huge part of the reason why.
One of my favorite soundtracks of all-time. It emotionally guides you through film so effectively, even now I'm choking up a bit just thinking about it.
Shawshank is truly a great film and the soundtrack is phenomenal. Thanks for breaking this down, Rick.
Lovely ... philosophically why are these melancholy tones so fitting and alluring. Love this film. Great analysis. Great music.
I absolutely love Shawshank Redemption. The Music gives a feeling of fear and dread.
I love the way you break down what we all hear, but may not fully understand!!! Love it!!
This is so unmistakably Thomas Newman. I couldn't begin to say why it is but my ears and heart know well enough. Road to Perdition is another hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. 💔
Amazing movie and music.
Please Rick, don't forget Ennio Morricone!
Rick, please, please, please go over more Thomas Newman music. I do not joke when I say his soundtracks are the music to my life. They help me work, they help me relax and everything in between.
Thomas Newman is a genius. This score and the one for Road to Perdition are master classes in film scoring.
Brilliant analysis! Rick nails it again. More of this, please!
Through the years, 9 out of 10 times, when I hear music cues in a movie that are particularly beautiful or lyrical to me, it winds up being Thomas Newman. He's amazing. Looking at the first scene that Rick shows with his music, you realize how many other ways other composers would have gone with the mood of that sequence. What Newman does is exquisite.
Fantastic analysis. That haunting passage of C, Eb6/9, Dbsus4, Bbsus2, C was indelibly left in my brain after watching the movie... and of course several times thereafter. The voicing also appears when Andy begins his escape and starts descending down the wall to take a crack at that sewer pipe... the anticipation of freedom, the reward of planning, patience and deft deception. I always thought the decision to introduce that passage at that moment was brilliant. All the effort Andy undertook to finally reach that point. The whole movie is such an incredible piece of filmmaking.
Thomas Newman is also one of my favorite composers as well. For years, it's been hard to find a good CD release of the score for Shawshank Redemption, and what is available, was crazy expensive at the time. He has always intrigued me with his deep sense of harmony and orchestration...almost like Shostakovich or Stravinsky.
I love how the upper melody line doesn't get simply accented on beat 1 of the bar and the 1st time we hear that E flat in the upper voice on the 2nd half note of bar 11...well that already begins to make your chest swell and tightens your throat.
Shawshank Redemption is the epitome of a masterpiece of filmmaking from every aspect of its creation. 🎬🎶
@@jimdixon3470 Thanks. It's been a few years since I tried looking it up, so many there's a little luck to be had.
Finally got to watch this all the way through. It's cool to appreciate a movie even more by understanding the scoring choices to highlight scenes
Yep. Newman's my fave. Any analysis of his work is a must watch for me
Rick!. . . . . Rick!. . . . .. *RIIIIICK!* .
Now you've made me LOVE "Shawshank Redemption" EVEN *MORE* than I ALREADY DID!
Something that was unnoticed during my previous hundreds of viewings of the movie - you have brought my attention to this AMAZING music!
Thank you - as always. . . . BRILLIANT!!
As a long time appreciator of film scores, this was wonderful to watch and see how the music is used to enhance and flesh out the scene.
Yet another reason why this is one of the greatest films of the last few decades.
One of my favorite movies too! I saw the full version of this amazing video when it premiered. I remember being mesmerized by how great it is. I thought "this is the greatest music channel in the world". Really. On so many levels. I was impressed how many people were watching something this high level. Little did I know that the channel would blow up and become accessible to millions. That is all wonderful! But, I thought we had mostly exchanged deep dives into the craft for exciting countdowns and interviews. I'm really glad you found a way to bring back this Secrets series in a new format. Advanced film music has stunning power and amazing production. Now more people will appreciate that. Very few people can make these topics accessible, but once you do, it's a vast playground.Thank you! Rick, you've come an amazing ways - the videos from 2016-17 are a treasure worth watching again and again. Please do new soundtrack videos! You get it
So, my son isn't the only other guy I know who often preferred to listen to movie scores! I enjoyed the analysis.
Thanks for helping Rick, Carol, whoever you are! :)
I've still not seen the film nor read the book. I probably will one day, I guess! It was interesting to see a film score dissected. Hopefully, there'll be more to come!
Agree. Road to Perdition has incredible piano/strings. Even Finding Nemo has an amazing piano piece. The ending scene in American Beauty is another. He does like the drop 2 voicings. Bach uses them all over the violin Partitas.
Thanks for reposting this. I remember when you originally put this out, you were disappointed that no one watched it, but I love these breakdowns of "old" and hope more folks watch this time.
Thanks for re-posting this Rick! More film cue breakdowns please!
You talk on another level ::: it’s art.
This film is in my top three all-time favorite films, in no small part due to the sound track. So glad you covered this. VERY interesting. It's helpful to see it broken down into it's individual components.
Great stuff, Rick -- keep 'em coming!!
Newman's my favorite. The Score for Road to Perdition is unbelievable.
This is one of the best film scores of all time. Wonderful analysis!
This theme is not just a movie ost, it's good enough to be remembered as classical music
This movie and all the songs of Shawshank redemption are etched in my memory for a lifetime.. There's a reason it's even above godfather
I absolutely love Thomas Newman: if you'll ever do more Newman breakdowns, I'll binge watch them all day :D
I love your other videos too, but especially the film score stuff. I’ve been a fan of film scores since I was a kid and didn’t really know anyone else who appreciated them like I did for a long time.
That was fantastic! More, please. Shawshank Redemption is a great movie for so many reasons, and the music puts it over the top, IMO. Keep it up, love it!
Hi Rick. We love you and all the brilliance you posses. We haven’t watched this video. With all of your talent.. we always know whatever you do is outstanding. Without viewing this video… and what we know of your musical brilliance please continue forward in that genre. Love you Rick.
Thanks for taking us into this very moving piece of music. Excellent! One of my all time favorite movies.
Love watching/listening to you break down scores. The Shawshank and Perdition really intermingle well stylistically.
Yes! Thanks so much for doing this and for devoting a series on this topic. I have been listening to your compositions from 5 years ago (which you used to include with lessons). I hear a lot of intersection with this Thomas Newman - or perhaps inspiration - or perhaps you are both inspired by similar domains of musical adventure. Beautiful.
Love this idea for a series. Any chance of looking at classic Bernard Herrmann like from Hitchcock, or Jason and the Argonauts? Great idea for late October?
Jason and the Argonauts is a great suggestion. I believe there is no string section in that score at all if I’m not mistaken.
Rick you are a genius, I purchased this Shawshank soundtrack because of this music.
This film is absolute perfection. From the music, to the look, to the acting. This is the greatest film ever made.
Thanks for this, Rick.
Expanding upon What Makes This Song Great into movie scores is a great idea!
Thank you Rick. Very interesting and enjoyable. Great learning from you. I’ve always enjoyed trying to follow the theme or title song’s melody throughout a film as it passes through various moods, interpretations and keys as it gets embedded into the soundtrack.
I absolutely love Thomas Newman's film scores. And this piece of music is rich in emotion: meloncholy, hopeful, doomed and powerful. More of these, please Rick. 😊
Having last name of Newman he grew up in a great musical environment. Getting into film music has opened my eyes and ears to the powers of simple themes and triads. Need to dig into orchestration seeing that is the key to making simple sound BIG.
Thomas Newman is in touch with some divine entity, one of a kind composer.
This is fantastic! Please keep doing these.
One of my favorite scores for my #1 favorite movie. Thomas Newman really created the best score possible for this movie and a beautiful work that stands on its own outside of the film. I can hear influences of Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Thomas Newman my favorite movie score composer. Thank you Rick! I never really paid attention to who wrote movie scores until one of my favorite rockers Danny Elfman stated doing them. Then every movie score I liked, I would look them up and listen to some of their other music. Thanks again Rick!!!
Thanks so much for this Rick. I’ve always loved this score, not to mention the movie is my favorite. To me the music conveys sorrow, longing, monotony, but most importantly hope, all at the same time. As Andy said, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing can ever die.”
Music like this can get to me as it's very emotional. Never seen the movie and never will. Those kinds of film are too intense. This music alone is stunning in its beauty and creativity. I was one of those guys in music college that enjoyed harmonic analysis. Thanks for sharing.
So original, so expressive, so influential. Can the academy final give Newman a fucking award already?
Spot on Rick. I love Thomas Newman Shawshank's redemption works and I just coupled you and him in a RUclips shot and it really comes as no surprise you rate him so high.
Thank you Rick. I love all of his music. He is my all time favourite.
I heard you mention in your livestream tonight that not a lot of people watched this, and I can see the numbers are lower than your usual. I just wanted to leave a comment to plead with you to stick with content like this because those of us who love it, REALLY REALLY love it. What a classic film and classic score. I would love to see more content about film and tv scores overall. Thanks for all you do, sir!
Rick being a guitar player, and completely unschooled rock guitar player, you have a knack of making me care about shit, I normally would never even have noticed.
Good analysis of the ambivalence between image and music. In this respect, the work of Thomas Newman in this film, but also in Road to Perdition, is outstanding. The symbiosis between the emotions contained in the scenes and the music is extraordinary, and requires a really deep understanding of the different layers of a movie.
Yes, yes...more film score analysis, please..!
Brilliant as usual, Rick.
Rick Breaking down music soundtracks sounds like this is going to be really good
It's not only harmonically modal, but it also has a pretty good counterpoint in it.
Goose Bumps. you are killing it.
Rick, love it. Its great when someone with your talent can explain what is going on in musical terms.
I don't write or very often listen to soundtracks but I feel like I learn more from these breakdowns than any of them.
I'd love to see more videos like this
It's great to have this broken down into understandable elements so we can not only hear but see some of Thomas Newman's choices. One thing that really stood out for me was the way the musical ideas were spread across several measures, but because they were so deftly interconnected and closely related, it gives a sense of continuous movement. If you took a single measure, out of context, it might sound dissonant and disconnected, but when they are taken as a whole, it becomes incredibly powerful. It's a reminder to me that writing a great score or a great song requires planning far ahead of the measure that you're working on to achieve this sort of motion and development, and a great lesson in composition.
Another great music lesson. Thanks, Rick!
"...writing a great score or a great song requires planning far ahead of the measure that you're working on..."
Love it.
@@swessels 😊
Absolutely brilliant Rick. I love when you break down topics like this. I think it’s my favorite thing you do. Well done 👍
You're reaching those of us with a great appreciation for all forms of good music...thank you.
Saw this a few weeks ago, only just watching it. I love how you break down those progressions. This is one of my fave films... made more excellent by this hauntingly beautiful film score. So-ooo good! Another great vid Rick!👍👍 More please. ❣ Loving this series.❣
Great video, Rick, love it! IMHO, no film composer scores strings as well as Thomas Newman. He coaxes so much emotion out of as few as two voices. Unbelievable! I'll occasionally listen to some cue of his that I've heard a million times, daring myself not to 'feel' it, but he gets me every time, often within one or two bars. One of the many great examples of this is his score for the Firefly movie. Cheers!
I really appreciate your coverage of so many different styles of music.
A question. Was this done a while ago and you've republshed it? I'm asking because it talks about the Beato Book 2.0 as having just come out and then there's an edit. Right after that you talk about BB 4.0.
Excellent video rick.i can't believe it's only got 3200 views. Love the shawshank redemption.
Please make more videos like this, Rick. Love them
RB, do not forget some television scores. The G.O.A.T. of tele scores is a living legend and still working on the "Law and Order" franchise. A multi Grammy winner in 4 different decades, with other credits in the music world, would qualify him for your attention and inspection.
I am a media composer too. And Thomas Newman as well as Alfred NewmanAre two of my favs too. Along with Danny Elfman, Harry Gregson Williams, Hans Zimmer and Atticus Ross. I tend to be more of a module composer than heavy melodies. Great series Rick. Please do more.
As soon as you mentioned this on your Sunday livestream I had to come watch! I'm a big fan of Thomas Newmans' music and this score in particular. Great to see you break down this piece :)
Fascinating!!! I love it!
Dude... this kind of deep analysis is fantastic! Such an iconic movie with you showing us the music moves behind the emotions! YES!
Fantastic ! more of this please Rick !
Great analysis Rick the Shawshank Redemption is one of my favourite movies.
I'm loving this! You were the one who got me to start thinking about film scoring, and this series will be awesome :)
