  • In this video coach John Shepherd (www.johnshepherdfitness.com/blog) looks at the ways you can add more speed to your jumping (& sprinting). Various drills and session ideas are presented together with some ways as to how to combine these into workouts. The idea behind these sessions is to move speed up a gear to reach peak velocity. Comment is also provided on how to fit these sessions into your training planning.

I see U teach your athlete's to run on or beside the line.. I was taught that by my coach & Charlie Francis folks.. Extremely useful technique!!!

Reviving my triple jump journey; how often should jumpers lift heavy for maximum sprint gains?

That's a difficult question to answer as much depends on the time of the season, your training maturity and the natural speed, power and strength assets that you bring to the event. If you take a look at this video it will give you an idea of some of my thoughts on the subject, which may help. (I'm also in the process of pulling together another on the topic.) ruclips.net/video/3Phb0dh6Igk/видео.html

Am doing the fly 20s as they are very event specific for jumpers like me. just curious how much full recovery is for your athletes. 5 minutes?

As much as you need to ensure to run as fast as possible - 5 minutes is probably about right.

This question is not directly related to the video but I ask it anyway. I am an athlete that that trains on my own. I do not have a coach to teach Olympic lift technique. I am however able to do the hang high pulls, which I first saw in your video, as it is a simpler lift. Could you suggest some lifts that are easier alternatives for more complex movements? Thank you.

I may turn this question and perhaps one of your others into a video reply as it may be easier... but good call on using the high pull as it is indeed a simpler lift to learn compared to some of the Olympic lifts. The snatch is a lift that I do wonder why athletes do sometimes, as it has a high risk element, if not learn't correctly. Plus, athletes aren't Olympic lifters, as neither are the latter sprinters or long jumpers etc... they spend all their time lifting and therefore they become very good at it. One of my pet peeves is the idea that weight training is a magic wand that will improve performance, it won't; it needs to be the "right" type of weight training and be part of a programmes that compliments your track & field training... anyway before I get further on the soapbox... try also hang cleans and the humble jump squat... both have a triple extension requirement (as with the Olympic lifts) and are huge power generators. The jump squat in particular is relatively safe too as you can hold dumbbells at arms' length and not overload the spine potentially... hope this helps and look out for a possible video soon.
