The inklings DO make ink in humanoid form, they just make ink FASTER while swimming in their ink. My guess is that the inklings feel safer, in a way while in their own ink, as they are hidden, so they can concentrate on making more ink.

Cold Nipple I think also since inklings have to maintain their skin to keep to from drying out more while in humanoid form, while submerged the ink protects them, letting their bodies use fluod production to focus more on ink than skin maintainance.

Yeah! I've thought about this too! but you already brought up all the points I was going to make... Well, I was going to make a point about it taking a lot of energy to stand upright, but then I realized that they recharge ink at the same speed in their squid-forms when NOT in ink as when they are in humanoid form. So it really has something to do with the ink, not with their forms, really!
Another thing I'm really wondering about is how their ink changes color. Their skin is logical, it's chromatophores. But their ink? their ink doesn't have that, or at least it shouldn't logically have chromatophores in it. Or maybe yes? At least the ink has to have pigment in it... Which they can produce! Because chromatophores have pigment! Oh man! But how does the pigment just evaporate? Ink just disappears after a while... I have to look more into this. I'm just in love with this game! My favorite animals, cephalopods, in a game!

Now, for some shit on octarian biology from someone who is waaay to interested in the backgroundlore of this game:
Octarians don't reproduce like a reallife octopus would do. Octarians are actually a subspecies of a certain (still unknown) "host" creature, but it is probably something like a giant, evolved octopus (since it would make sense somewhat). Octarians are born when one of these creatures sheds a tentacle. As stated in this video, these tentacles have little intelligence on their own. These new born octarians are the single tentacle Octarians you see. The thing with octarians thou is that they can evolve from this state and either grow in size (and intelligence) or in number of tentacles (and in intelligence as well). the more tentacles an octarian has and/or the the larger these tentacles are, the smarter it gets. This is why the smaller, one tentacle octarians are sorta stupid but the once with two tentacles or really big tentacles are smarter. Further, it is debateable if octarians really have sentience, but they probably don't. They are really good at following orders and probably gain these orders from their octopus-like overlords that gave them lives. It is mostly their live purpose to serve these overlords.
However, this seems to not nessecarily affect octolings. Octolings are a very far evolved octarian form (and are almost treated as their own subspecies). They have 8 limbs and are the smartest among all octarians. They even have most (if not all) abilities an inkling has. In splatoon, we only could observe octolings in octovalley and they were clearly enemies. At that point, it wasn't clear if octolings were just like the other octarians mindless drones or not but with Marina being in splatoon 2 and clearly having her own personality and sentience, this is called into question. My theory is is that although octolings (which I would count DJ Octavio into as well, only that he choses to stay in his octo-form) all develop a form of sentience, most still follow orders from the octopus overlords. The reason for this is probably because this is the life they are accustomed to.
A new revelation though is that some octolings might actually abandoned their lives in the octarian society and integrated into inkling society. This doesn't seem to be much of a problem, for reasons yet to be determined. The reason for this line of logic is (again) Marina. From the dialog she shares with pearl she seems to just fit into inkling society just as well as every inkling does. She even participates in turf wars and such, which is a thing that other species that integrated into inkling society like crustations, jellyfishs and urchins don't and probably can't do. It stands to reason that marina isn't the only octoling to have integrated into inkling society. Since the possibility of playable octolings in the near future is still there (which we know thanks to datamining the game), there might be some more information on octarians coming down the pipe soon.
I'm writting all of this down because the parallels between realife octopus and octolings are frighteningly acurate and I'm nerding out right now.
    I love splatoon.
    Here's a TLDR to summerize.
    Known Facts about octarian biology:
    - Octarians can't reproduce themselfs, they are born from a sort of "Host" creature
    - This "birth" happens when a tentacle of this host creature is cut off
    - Octarians can evolve over time and grow more and/or larger tentacles
    - Their number of tentacles and size of these tentacles determines the inteligence of the octarians
    - Octarians are good at following orders
    - Octolings are the most advanced form of octarians known to us
    - Octolings also are some of the most highranking members of octarian society
    - Like inklings, all octarians can produce their own ink
    - All octarians are also capable of using ink-based weaponary
    Speculations:
    - octarians don't generally pocess sentience and follow orders from these "host" creatures
    - The hosts are probably some sort of evolved, super-intelligent octopus
    - These octopuses use the octarians to do their bidding
    - octoling society is most-likely structured like a monarchy or a dictatorship where the octopuses are the totalitarian leaders of the society, under them are the most intelligent octarians and below these are other octarians (ranked by their intelligence) with the most simple minded octarians at the very bottom
    - Octarians can gain sentience along the line of their grow-cycle
    - The most likely point of this is when they become octolings
    - Not all octolings choose to stay within octoling society and may integrate into inkling society (Example in-game: Marina)
    - Since octolings have most (if not all) of the same abilities as inklings (including using inkling weaponary), they blend in very well to inkling society and may participate in turf wars just like any inkling would

Maybe when they are making ink, the process is sped up in swimming, but is done similar to real squids, in how they use their food to make it. But the inklings are another specimen, so maybe they don't require as much food to make more ink?

The mention of Octarians Is rather accurate- Octotroopers are actually the severed limbs of higher-ranking Octarians, such as Octolings, that grow into an individual, complete with a brain. I suppose Octolings reproduce this way too, which means Marina might be a mom and all that... Art... Is impossible.

Yes, the ink inkling's get without ink is from their mucus and their ink pouches... I'll never think about splatoon the same. lol

Black ink is made using carbon black. And white pigments, such as titanium dioxide, are used either by themselves or to adjust characteristics of color inks. Inks also contain additives such as waxes, lubricants, surfactants, and drying agents to aid printing and to impart any desired special characteristics.

Octopi is not the correct plural of octopus, its actually octopedes since the word Octopus comes from greek origins and are made of the words Octo (eight) and pede (Leg) octopus is a common english version of this combination but since there is no definite plural we look back to the greeks for the correct plural: octopedes.

My question is, when the inklings are in squid form, where did the clothes went? Are the clothes made out of special material?

Sooooo.... we actually use squid ink as a condiment for pasta here in Italy and honestly? 's pretty good.
And then I learned it's colored mucus. I regret nothing.

"While the inkling need a special weapon or a launchpad to take off..."
Wow, that's like literally false. The Inklings can teamjump anywhere on the map at any point of the game, and they don't need the spawn point for it.

Is it really ink? Yes, if Nintendo makes it ink its ink. If Nintendo says its ink, it's ink.

Ok now I'm thinking about making an ability that let's you look like the opposing team. Of course you shoot your own ink, but your hair, ect is the opposing team.
