The actual canon reason is mind-reading squid crystals that subconsciously wanted to replicate humanity! Love this series.

Yep that’s basically what i wanted to say but you beat me to it. The mind reading crystal can arrange itself into what the collective wants. Overtime it gave the inkling & octoling sentience and shapeshifting (both from the crystal material properties and the lingering subconscious drive from humanity).
My head canon is the ink are actually the crystal that envelop the squid/octo form and get manipulated into humanoid form. Also the crystal doesn’t just affect the cephalopods, all the marine life is affected (but the cephalopods inherit that human drive). This can explain why the salmonid have abilities like the cephalopods does. Though i think it’s just a matter of how much percentage of crystal exist and is manipulable by their species.

Well if the breasts are cause by the Inksacks then perhaps the reason why the males don't have have breasts is do to the fact that females have organs to bear young that push the inksacs intp the chest.
So since that the males have no organs to bear young the inksacs have more space inside the body so they don't proturde.

That makes sense. While both genders would have reproductive organs - it takes two to tango after all - even in our species the real estate in the torso taken up by reproductive bits is significantly smaller in men than women, even not accounting for mammary glands. Mostly because a lot of it is external, but even the internal bits take up almost no room.
Honestly though, My headcanon/belief of the ink/octolings is more along the lines of them basically being elemental ink to sum it up. Only way to explain the whole squid now/kid now thing and the whole coming back from being blasted into splatter without just writing it off as game mechanics, which honestly it is ;P

@@raishen1516 If that really was true, I think it'd balance out. Having big breasts is most likely a hindrance when running and just agility in general where as when you're flat you can do so with ease. So big = more power, less agility and flat is the opposite, maybe?

It makes sense now! Female Inkling or Octoling was always the default gender. In advertising, box-art, Smash, and development.
And that's also why (subjectively) the girls have better designs than the boys -- because the boys were just thrown in, after they focused on the girls!

fun to see people theorise so much about why squids are so similar to humans when after splatoon 3 was released, we just found out a huge bunch of backstory to the splatoon lore in the logs
I may still regret having clicked on this video from a standpoint of 'oh-god-what-does-this-say-about-me,' but that answer was really cool - especially because the Japanese naming part *really* suggests that the societal gender dynamics piece was probably an intentional (albeit small) piece of background lore, regardless of its use in answering this question.

The inkling evolution was affected by the syntetic crystals humans made to mimic the sky that got spreaded by the rocket accident, they responde to human toughts and got passed to the marine species, making they eventualy evolve i to the land species they are now, so their evolution became directed torward the development of human-like features, including breasts.

Splatoon 3 review some stuff. Inklings, Octarians, and other cephalopods have gave us the answer for this in the logs. The sea-life has ate special crystals that humans had. This contained human DNA. Sea life evolution practically explains the rest.
thats what i was thinking, i also have a question about the fuzzy ooze, how would it turn them into a mammal, if golden eggs play a part in the production of fuzzy ooze, how does that link in to mammals if salmons are fish, and how would transformation from cephalopods to mammals, what we see is just our inkling being coated in fur, afterwards there are no signs of ink visible, this can be up for debate

The fuzzy ooze is sci-fi stuff made by [REDACTED] using special crystals that contained human DNA. Don't question it.
The Golden Eggs play a part in just powering up stuff. You can probably figure out what [REDACTED] is trying to power up. It doesn't have to do with the mammal stuff. If you gonna question how are Octarians just hairy, but Inklings/Octolings a literal fuzzball, my scientific theory is that [REDACTED] gave the Octarians a dosage, while you literally just get bucket loaded engulfed with that stuff, growing hair everywhere. We also know that through Octo Expansion, they don't need ink to stay in that form, but instead they become zombie-like. Sanitized so to speak.

Since this is from 2018 and we didn’t know what we do now, I’m gonna chalk it up to the crystals having something to do with their humanlike appearance. Because that is the case, the first squids who dominated the earth had the crystal puddle as their home until they migrated from the water.
That makes the inclusion of the exterior artificial ink tank that’s a part of their equipment make more sense. If they already have ink tanks inside them, having one on the outside make things a bit more even and fair for the males so their natural disadvantage maters less.

Imma just put my theory out here:
So I'd like to think that inkilings in fact since they had to evolve to be on land they also had to evolve to feed and give birth to their young. Squids lay eggs which are always in the water in a really gelatinous shell, and to top that off when squids lay their eggs they never stay with them. Infact some species straight up die after breeding. So when on land they have to evolve to now care for their young and since they're now "humanoids" or more sentient they have developed more humanity in a way. Leaving a child behind is now frowned upon and since they have to feed and take care of their young, they developed mammary glands to make things easier.
Idk I like to come up with my own little theories on the game :.)
Probably won’t se this, but from the lore of the third game, they were made from some mind reading crystals that read the minds of humanity when they went extinct. The crystals fell into some sea water and made the marine life as human like as possible.

I did it with Heavy Splatling and Curling Bombs. I'm not sure if that gold toothpick was worth all the effort but at least it can help me spam Tenta Missiles in ranked.
It was difficult as heck when I tried it continuously with my mainstay dualies, but when someone reminded me that the roller is a one hit KO the battle was a breeze .u. Didn't even bother strategizing, just waited at the "spawn points" and plowed them down.
If anyone wants to know, I beat it with Dualies. Things to remember:
- Try to spawn camp the first few octolings.
- You can kill Octolings standing on the wall before they spawn. (This works for the first few phases.)
-If in later phases the orb is damaged, remember you can regenerate its health by shooting it.
-Specials are your friends. Specifically Splashdown and Ink Armor.
-Listen to Cuttlefish, use the weapon you're most comfortable with. It'll be harder if you don't.

I love this theory a lot, but considering they also evolved from laying eggs to giving life-birth, they're probably just actual breasts. (UPDATE: NAH, READ FURTHER)
*Update:* I have learned more about biology and evolution at this point. And live-birth and breastfeeding may have both evolved for mammals, they are not inherently connected. The breastfeeding part happened because at some point we evolved a different jaw, and as such different methods of growing teeth. At birth, we needed a new way of getting nutrients while our teeth hadn’t finished coming through our gums yet, enter MILK.
Looking at inkling and octoling teeth, they seem to have distinctly different dentures than mammals do, so I don’t actually think they breastfeed. (In fact, they may not even be teeth, they might be beaks. Y’know, proper celaphopod beaks.)
Perhaps they are indeed merely cosmetic, because inklings and octolings evolved to look more like humans. So they could’ve just taken on the appearance of breasts without actual functional glands.
But again, they aren't mammals

The only examples shown for nipple less inklings in this video were male, and knowing the weird biology behind inklings, they mightve evolved so males just dont have nipples anymore and only women desvolt them. Or, crazy theory, maybe both genders have a peak mating or reproduction/parenting age, near which they start forming nipples specifically for those purposes

Since inklings can’t live in water the eggs would ever have to be in some kind of container full of ink, an egg similar to birds, or like with some sharks the eggs would stay within the mother to hatch then be released. Some sharks have belly buttons so the breast could be muscles. Pigeons also make milk like substance from their throat for their babies if they can not find food so breast aren’t the only option for how animals can create food for offspring. So the breast being muscles seems like a pretty reasonable theory to me.

New solution thanks to Splatoon 3 lore drop kinda spoilers ahead
In 3 it is revealed the reason marine life came to the surface is due to being infused with crystals that humans had that read their minds and then reflected their desires, which is why the sky of Alterna looks like the sky. When sea creatures absorbed these crystals the desires of humans were also absorbed and because the humans of Alterna desired to see the surface as the thing they wanted most it got reflected into sea life to note this affect squid and octopus the most as seen by the fact they were the first two sea creatures to evolve to land, probably due to the fact the crystals were made from squid and octopus which stands to reason other human desire is also in there just less than loving the surface, which is why they became more and more human like in appearance and behaviour. also the reason why Octarins are so obsessed with taking back the surface. This next part is a bit out there but it could still apply, the reason why breasts is because humanity loves tits.

Maybe, due to the females giving birth, their muscles are on top of the ink sack to make way for the womb, while males have room under the ink sacks to have the muscles there? After all, the strength, athleticism, ink storage etc. is exactly the same for males and females.

Whenever I'm in a battle, the team with more female members almost always wins. It has happened time and time again. One time I was the only male on my team and the other team was entirely male. I purposely did a terrible job, and my team still won in a blowout. Needless to say, this supports your theory, but also makes the game unfair. I plan to datamine Splatoon 2 in hopes to discover if female characters really do have an unfair advantage. If they do, I'll blab the news all over the Internet and complain to Nintendo.

This video is really good and I spent half an hour looking for it because I thought it was a Game Theory video. You know, one of the ones that actually deals with science? I guess I shouldn't have been surprised it was this channel though. Probably the only other game/science channel I bother to watch.
So about the male inkling not having nipples... if you look at any Japanese media like video games or anime, Free! (Iwatobi Swim Club) is a great example of this, male nipples tend to be missing. So I'm not sure about a shirtless inkling being reliable there. Otherwise, great video! :D
@gucci fam nipples would just be a 2d texture on the chatacter model. It's worth noting that if inkings were never intended to appear topless then they probably wouldn't bother with adding nipples to the texture map, as it would be a pointless detail.
