    I appreciate seeing you wipe the floor down before thinsetting the Ditra. Little things like that always makes a difference. Just like I always etch polished/finished concrete with sulfamic acid after I pop my grid and spray down with clear coat. Maybe one day I can come up or you could come to Bama and we work on an install. I worked with Bath Fitter for a few years and they turned me into a national installer. They would fly me all over the US. Brockton was where they were located, but I spent all week driving to different cities working. I love it up there this time of the year.
    I started working in tile and stone when I was 8 yrs old, helping my granddad and dad. I will be 45 yrs old this November. I appreciate what you do and again I appreciate seeing people do the lil things right.

    I think I learned something important today looking at this video Sal. I'm about to start a 6x24" porcelain wood look in my bathroom and doing it in 2 days. I have split the room in half with a board like you did and it's screwed down. i was going to simply start laying right against there but I noticed that you have clips in those "ending rows" ready to go for the next day. I'm not sure I've heard you speak of this before (perhaps a video on leaving the job prepped for another day would be excellent if you don't already have one). I, stupidly, never noticed that without leaving those clips for the next day's rows, you wouldn't actually be able to slide them under and would have to eyeball that next day's rows to match the day before. Thanks very much for all of these videos, it's been invaluable to me in my current reno.

    Hello Sal. We are going to replace carpeting in 2 bedrooms and den with porcelain wood plank tile. The installer asked us which way we want the tile to run, north & south or east/west? One installer said usually its always north/south but the other installer said he would install it east/west because we have a nice water view in the master bedroom. I want to make the right decision. Can you please advise. Thank you.

You are my go to guy and I watched this one to see if you line your end joints up and I’m glad to see that you don’t I don’t either but when I was watching I noticed something. If you watch the video you will see I do it both ways, depends on the situation, it is best to go the short way, but sometimes that can be difficult, so the important thing is to get the correct coverage, which you determine by periodically pulling up a tile and check.

      With ditra you can use it to fill the waffles so no waste. Otherwise put it in a box or find some place to let it harden. Usually small amounts when I know I am getting close to the end of the day I don't mix more than I need.

  • @R2Mike
    @R2Mike 6 лет назад

    Do I see white paint on the new floor!? Anyways...can u explain the expansion joint? I mean if the contractor puts quarter round on the floor would that let it move? You said u liked the baseboards being up, is that for the other 1/2" of movement? I sound confusing...would u not caulk if you had base and qrt rd ( 1 1/14), or have to caulk because you dont have that much room with baseboards being down?

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  6 лет назад

      Quarter round is a good move, no one wants it in my area, very rare. so I like the base off so I can leave a gap at the wall and then it gets covered with the base, quarter round does the same thing. No need to caulk it if it is covered, kind of pointless to do that.

    • @R2Mike
      @R2Mike 6 лет назад

    Hi Sal, I just did my first job with leveling system clips on a 24 x 48in tile with a one third brick joint. I have used the clips once before but it was only for the odd tile here and there with a plank tile. One thing I noticed ( since i usually level the plane out on the floor) that the clips seemed to make tiles that were not on a straight plane even with the ones next to it in a way that seemed to do, what i deemed, the impossible. Do you find the clips can actually bend the tile to a small degree because that is what I have come to conclude. I'm shocked either way at what they can do with a massive tile with a brick joint....seems to defy the laws of level and plane.

    Sal, a technical question if you dont mind. When tiling on Ditra matting, rather than filling squares up with adhesive as you tile, would applying a levelling compound with a spiked roller the day before be an acceptable alternative? I ask because I do prefer trowelling adhesive onto a smooth surface as opposed to the uneven Ditra. Thank you in advance Sal

      On ditra, it is not approved by Schluter.

    • @hereticxxx9317
      @hereticxxx9317 6 лет назад

      When you apply leveler to a uncoupling, you defeat its purpose. Any leveler you apply gains the uncoupling ability and the tile loses it. If you want to prefill the mat simply use the same mortar you are using for the tile, the day before. Levelers always go down before uncoupling mats.

      @@SalDiBlasi Not so Sal, says one of your followers that commented on one of your other video's that you are doing it incorrectly with this Ditra system. He was addiment about the failure of the Ditra system and he himself had to completely pull up 5 or more in only a short time because of failure. This is not how tile should be laid he says. It is put on the old fashion way without decoupling measures. Man he really laid it into you. And your comment to him was there is now better options for tilers now in the 21st Century. Thought maybe you'd give it right back to him but, being professional (as you always are) invited him to join you in group of 3000 members to help educate others. And then all I heard from him was " ". Silence! he never responded back. I remember cause even though I don't install tile I have watched hundreds of your video's. Only because it is entertaining and educational and you do it so well. My opinion, after watching you and others is you may be one of best tile installers in the business. Thank you.

      Hate silicone, but it needs to get done and the base still needed to get painted. Looks good now.

      Sal DiBlasi get yourself an electric caulking gun. At least you can resilicone when it fails very cheaply.
      but your tiling is nice to watch.
      Get yourself to the gym bud.

    Pull a control line then do a quick dry layout ,then pull another chalk line and rock n roll! You’re killling yourself man! Work smarter not harder.. ditra = garbage 1/4 inch hardie backer and versabond thinset way better..

      You have your beliefs all backward, if you knew how an uncoupling membrane works and how much better, easier and faster it is to install, and the benifits. A non force conductive underlayment V a force conductive one like ditra, no contest. Try to keep up with the industry and advancements, looks like you are getting left behind. As far as layout, way ahead of you.

    What size trowel did you use. What pattern did you use to make look like that?

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  4 года назад +1

      1/2" deep trowel, random pattern.
