My head cannon is that all those other unique weapon started out stock and their owners modified them, the Courier does the same, so when he modifies a gun they are his uniques.

Kick Byzentines(Romans/Legion) out of Mojave.
Right away, there's a lever action shotgun you can steal in the big horn saloon in Boulder City just so you know for the future. It is great for early levels when 12g is rare and 20g shells are more common.

Shotguns in New Vegas are pretty good since they have a lot of ammo types. They are actually very versatile in New Vegas. Plus, there are dedicated perks for the shotguns.
Shotguns are great in New Vegas, BUT... Problem is, with shotguns you hit the progression limit before even completing half the game, quickly overpowered yes, but it also quickly gets boring. They have a really extremely limited amount of choices, even in comparison to melee and explosives

She even informed me of advanced details like S.P.E.C.I.A.L & ammo types (Which in time I perfected to benefit in later playthroughs with revised strategic characteristics.) Since I was new to the function of New Vegas (And realising I couldn't sprint), I had to adapt to the gameplay & combat features, little did I know about the Shotgun Surgeon alongside And Stay Back perks and that made my first experience so memorable. I even accidently went through Primm Pass and encountered the Blind Deathclaw, without the perks I would have made an appetite for the Mojave's prime hunters. All in all, I have a great affiliation with shotguns in videogames, but New Vegas gave me the best way to use them.
Shotgun Surgeon + And Stay Back for the absolute blast of using shotguns. Also I see a fellow Hitman's Anim enjoyer, I found myself unable to play New Vegas anymore without his anim mods and some of B42 stuffs XD
I know on Xbox you used to able to glitch the single shell load shotguns (lever, and pump) but swapping ammo twice with a hotkey would load 1 shell and it would be full.
Remember, everyone - Dead Money is ultimately all about letting go. Of your over-reliance on unencumbered movement mechanics and your Elixir Fallacy tendencies. Use those Stealth Boys and plan a route to properly escape with all the gold bars. Don't be a scrub!
I know that it can be kind of overwhelming, but if nothing else I recommend JAM. You'll probably download 10+ mods for it, but it is so worth it in my book.

When dealing with triple the enemies, it was essential on the hardest difficulty. Dinner Bell is great for dealing with humanoid enemies though!
