Thank you Luis for the camera and the film rolls! 👉 / justcallmesando
A couple of days after I shot the Fuji GA645w I had the chance to shoot a Makina 67, a camera that I wanted to shoot for a long time. Yes, it wasn't the one with my preferred focal length but with a similar shooting experience despite the fact it had a 80mm lens.
After seeing the results I am very pleased how they turned out. Even when shot wide open at f/2.8 the Nikkor lens delivered stunningly sharp images with a nice and creamy bokeh.
The only thing that concerns me a little bit is all the trouble the owner of the camera went through. Maybe those issues are not common but still it makes me think twice wether or not I should get a Makina Plaubel.
The film I shot was Fuji Acros 100 that was pushed to 400, which wasn't really necessary but I like the extra punch it gives the Acros. The roll of Portra delivered as you would expect. Not sure at what speed I shot it at but I probably overexposed by several stops since I shot it at 1/500 with an aperture of f/2.8. It was developed normally without any pulling.

I'm very curious to try 120mm format but looks difficult to focus, I liked a lot the one of the woman stepping the water
Thank you! Congratulations, you are the winner of the print. Can you shoot me a message over on Instagram or through my website?
11:22 The shutter normally won't cock after the last frame, that's how you'd know. Perhaps this was one of the problems the Makina you used had. An unusual feature of the 670 is that its light meter is practically a spot meter. This was an intentional design decision geared at advanced users. I got my Makina in 2005 and it needed a small shutter repair but it has worked perfectly since then (it's 2022 now). It still has the same light meter battery (they seem to last forever). There are some things to remember to keep it in good order, like remembering to set the focus to infinity before folding the lens. The sharpness and the bokeh of the lens is top notch.
Amazing how well the camera works in backlight, I like the image with the rider best.
That picture of the boy is my favourite. Nice as usual!
Robin, the problem with the PM67 was that it wasn't properly serviced or CLA'd. The winder jam is a pretty common problem with the Makina when it hasn't been properly looked after. Sounds like your friend took it to someone who wasn't familiar with Plaubel repairs. So the camera wasn't exactly in good working order. Nevertheless, you got some fantastic images from it. I own a PM670 & love it, but I don't shoot street with it as it takes a while to compose & focus & you lose the moment, as the camera stands out way too much. Love it for street portraits tho. That Nikon lens is stellar.
Love all of the prints. The people of Mexico are so happy, I went right before the pandemic and everyone was so welcoming
A high point of every Sunday to watch your video.
Really great to see the Makina getting some love! I wrote a review of the Makina 67 on the Casual Photophile website which I recommend reading, as it has all of the little tips I've picked up about keeping the cameras healthy. They're wonderful and well made, but have a lot of parts that can be vulnerable to damage, and the meters often stop working.
Funnily enough I was luckily able to get the W67 with the 55mm lens as well. The ridged surface on that camera plus the rubber on the focus wheel makes it so much faster to focus, and as such I enjoy using it a lot more than the original 67. Lens is pretty slow at f4.5, but really wonderful rendering!
If possible get one under warranty from a camera shop. My 67 was winding very roughly but they serviced it under warranty, saving me £270!
My favorite is the last print. Great work!
I think the Hasselblad 500s and the Mamiya 6 & 7 are the undisputed kings of portable Medium format. As your looking for RFs, other options i can think of are the Makina & Fujis 6*0 (670/680/690) which are also great, I have the GSW with a 65 of which is an amazing lens. The issue I can see however with all of these for street is the minimum focus distance and depth of field of medium format, really inherently bad for most street photography uses as quick focus precision is much harder, with low light almost impossble and focus mistakes are clear in the larger negatives. Potentially something like the Hasselblad SWC or the Pentax 645AF might be the best medium format cameras for the type of work you show in this channel imo.
Fantastic images!
The Makina is my dream camera.
Really enjoy your videos.
At 9:39 : they actually got a parisian entrance for the metro. These are called Guimard metro entrance. Nice nod from our fellow Mexican friends.
My favourite of this episode is the one with the kid with the hat. I am Mexican but havent been there in 3 years, so, I have enjoyed a lot this episodes of your trip there.
Thanks for the video.
My favorite medium format for street was the Mamiya C220 TLR.
My current medium format for street is the Fuji GW670 rangefinder with fixed 90mm normal lens. I also own a Fuji GSW690 rangefinder with a fixed 65mm wide-angle lens. I primarily use the 690 for landscape; not stteet.
Great images and video as usual. My black and white favorite is the first of your favorites. My favorite color is your first color image of the couple under the tree.
Wow that lens is great.
Fuji GS645S or Fuji GS645W are probably something you would enjoy.
My favorite the guy on the horse
Wonderful captures!
Not sure how you feel about 6x6, but you may want to check out the Lomography LC-A 120. It has a surprisingly sharp lens and wide 38mm aperture (21mm equiv.) . It also has a very fast zone focus system and you can typically get 12 or 13 shots per roll. Lastly, it’s probably the smallest medium format camera you can find. Thanks for all the videos!
omg i'm coming first one!!!!!! like that boy one choose me Mr Robin!!!
stunning as always
I have the Makina W67 and it's my favourite medium format camera for its usability, compactness and the lens quality. I sold my Mamiya 6 and 7 shortly after getting the Makina as they just didn't get used anymore.
yes, the boy in the first print was very nice BW shot. and of course, some shot of the couples that always look interesting.
oh ya new video finally
This has really great depth. I don't think I can see a huge difference between this and your M6 35f1.7 combo you used back in Thailand, but it does look nice. Maybe just a fast 50 or 55mm lens on the M6 would get you a similar look in terms of depth, but if you want to stay wide with the same depth, medium format is the way to go.
I really enjoy watching your videos 🙂
The nikkor lens is what makes this camera.
Great camera and photos. Really like 80mm, take more time to focus, although image has much better perspective than 45mm
Insane shot street on 6x7 in 2.8, woww!
The mariachis, you can see them at the plaza by night - recommended!
Another great vlog mate! 👍
Nice video!
Achill´s heel is the bellows and the Light Meter. Camera and Repair are expensive
@WoboTheWombat I would in general step away from medformat rangefinders with film. These cameras 1) are old 2) have slow lenses and 3) usually limit you with 1/500 shutterspeed. These times Film gets more and more expensive - so I would go with WYSIWYG Cameras only - however I understand that it is tempting to have a carry around medium format Cam. I did use a Mamiya 7 and Fujica 645 myself by the way…
Across looks amazing in 120!
there is the gs645w its scale focus and its a fixed lens camera has a meter. It uses an EBC Fujion W 45mm f/5.6 lens
Which park were you at in the beginning? I've done street in CDMX with my speed graphic so I'm considering down sizing to the Fuji GW690. But I would love to see you trying out the GSW690.
I have been interested in this camera for some time. Thank you for the review
Robin, have you considered the Fujica GS645W. You can zone focus with and it has a very accurate meter. It is a little on the slow side with f5.6 being the widest aperture and a max shutter of 1/500s.
loved the shoot, greetings from Egypt :)
Nice photo walk, as usual!
Great shot of the youg man. I have to give the Acros 100 a try...Great job!
Awesome work sir!
Like your work. Good job with new to you camera in hand.
Nice photos! :)
I hope that you have better luck with the next first time shooting camera!
My uncle owns three Makinas. An 80mm, one of the 55mm Wide versions and one which is untouched and it still has the protection paper on the inside and the little plastic protection strips at the strap holder rings. Wish I had all of them :)
He should use them now and then. Even one roll every month or two. It's not good for the mechanism to just sit there.
@@JanPBtest I know, the only problem is that he is not able to due to health issues. I wish I could take the babies out but I guess most of them need a service and there is only one Service left
Thank you for sharing! How do you compare makina with Fujifilm gf670
Another great video
It's between #1 and #3. The candid moment in each is wonderful. I didn't know Acros could be so contrasty - will have to try pushing it 2 stops in 35mm. Overexposed Porta has a look all of its own. Curious what format scans Carmencita delivered for you. Seems like some of the US labs by default only offer JPG which limits post processing
I use the Fuji gs645s and love it
Hey Robin! It's me Luis from Mexico City. How did you like the Makina? I just got to see the images. ¡Saludos desde México!
I think that you need to try Fuji GS645S, it's not super expensive and it's more reliable then 645Z and Makina.
Surprised that thing never fell apart
I really want a Pentax 67, badly!!! Great ecosystem with a wide choice of lenses. Would to see you try that if you can borrow one
Mine has lightmeter not working, common issue with this Makina. Small issue if you are using external lightmeters. Perfect for travelling. Amazing lens.
Great shots, I am really impressed to see the results of the bokeh and your great work and catching the focus. 👌I felt in love with the compact Makina after watching the Wim Wenders film "Palermo shooting" But just to try the camera, it's a little bit expensive to buy one.
I think the 135 make more sense for street because you won't hold back. You'll shoot more but have more chance of getting a decisive moment.
I've wanted to try one of those for a long time. I just worry about getting it repaired if something happens to it. Love the photos!
Will Luis being posting his video of you shooting on the street somewhere on RUclips?
For me, for street its a bit close lens, i prefer wider, but nice quality by the way. Nice video, as always lucky for a print haha
nice camera
I did the final photo of the guy on the horse as well as the one of the workers in bright colors.
Lens seems super nice and sharp! Great shots from the ones that came out.. Always a shame when good frames get messed up though
Excellent you have to try the mamiya 6 or 7
I would not choose makina because of its price and fragileness, but optically its perfect thanks to Nikon glass on it. I'm on TLR now and plan to get one of FujiFilm 67 cameras - the Teaxas Leica 😂
10:39 Oh, noooo!!!
Kennst du vermutlich schon aber Fuji GS645s Pro wide, horizontale 645 manuelle rangefinder kamera mit 60mm f4 (37mm FF)
Schaut Hammer aus!
Hey Robin - We loved the Makina shoot, sorry ~ it was a bit hinkey, in the counter department. My girl loved it especially - where you announced the books ( the hasselblad-wide and 28)
where can get those (your website obviously) but how did you do the pop-Up insert, that was so cool. Anyway - thanks for a another great Film-Photos and video. V/r, Robt
Let me suggest the Mamiya 6MF. It has three lenses, a 50, a 75 and a 150mm and square 6x6 format.
I have only the 50 and the 150 mm, and I want that 75mm. They are normally sold with the 75mm, so I'm might by another house with that lens. Then I have to houses, and one for spare, if needed.
Den Acros muss ich auch mal probieren.
It would be so nice to get a print from The Real sir Robin 😁
No need for a print, but love the first b&w shot. Yes, focus is somewhat off, but I like that. Who needs perfection. ;)
I can’t see the point of shooting 120 unless you print big with maximum quality. That means Fuji Gw690. Superior lens and properly affixed to the body. Not as heavy as people make it out to be. For real value the Ercona or Zeiss Super Ikonta C are hard to beat for 6x9 quality and portability. The Makina has always had a reputation for quality mixed with fragility.
Honestly, this "Makina" is an abomination compared to the german originals.
Dude you really gotta check out the Fuji GS645S or GS645W, I have the S and I fucking love it
I just commented the same haha...I love that camera. The only ‘problem’ is that I burn through a roll so fast when I use it hahah
$2000 for a "lemon". I'd be pissed. No excuse for the repair shop to have not properly repaired that camera, causing you to lose frames like that. And I was really considering picking one of these up even though the price is really inflated. Time to look again at the Fuji GW670 xx line again, but those are high as well damm.
It feels like all film cameras are expensive right now, I had a casual look round eBay and was like wtf.
It is a pity that the two most important photos at the end of the film did not come out? Not cool!;/10:34,11:00☹️
Be careful how you this camera as there are no spares available for this camera anymore. And good luck I hope you can find the wide angle version with it's w/angle nikkor lens as they are pretty rare! 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Whoah, that’s a $1900USD camera! LOL, a $99 Diana is more my speed.
Great camera, but not a great choice for street work.
I like the look you gor from acros. I will have to try it out.
It seems like a nice camera to use but those problems are not fun and would get annoying after a couple of shoots...
The camera is a great lens handicapped by a temperamental and unreliable body. Sometime ago I was looking for a technician who could remove the lens and adapt it to some other mount like a screw mount or something else. No one would try 😅
I want own a medium format camera.
question: shall i trade my Leica M6 for a Mamiya 7?
But why
You can sell the Leica M6 for way more than a Mamiya 7 costs
@@okok72277 mamiya 7’s are going for £2000 atm my M6 with 35’m summicron will go for £2500 so not much in it
Nope just buy a cheap MF because it’s expensive to buy film and process plus heavier.
Keep the Leica dude, for the resale value. Mamiya RF need quite a bit of servicing & they're plastic. Fantastic lenses tho. Plus 36 v 10 shots. Keep the Leica. I own a Makina 670, the following model. Much more reliable but still hella pricey to CLA. They're a luxury niche camera with that killer Nikon lens. MF is getting way too pricey to shoot nowadays. From my experience, the grass isnt greener, its just heaps pricier to maintain. You'll never lose money with a Leica, and you won't find Mamiya repairers for those cameras in the years to come due to lack of parts or lack of repairers because they've all mostly retired & no new technicians trained as Mamiya don't even exist anymore.
Wciąż ten 🇵🇱 akcent masz 🤫
Do you think that there is something Macho about pushing film in already contrasty conditions and shooting wide open at f2.8 ? personally I think that this is ridiculous.
I like the shot with the woman at the fountain most.
This has always been a fashionable and expensive camera, even in the 90s. Annoyingly rare and elitist, can not see the point, for street or anything else
