EXPLORING THE STREETS OF PORTO WITH MY CAMERA // Leica M6 + Portra 400

  • What film could be better suited to explore the city of Porto than some Kodak Portra 400? In this episode I am shooting two rolls of film while exploring the cultural and culinary side of Porto. Come join me for a calm and cozy street session that was blessed with some magical light.
    And also, please let me know about your opinion: Which image did you enjoy the most?
    (Little side note for the Portuguese people here: Sadly, there was no licence free Portuguese or Fado music available on my music provider of choice. Therefore I had to go for some more Mediterranean-Latin vibes.)

    I was in Marstal on the small island of Aeroe in August and shot a lot of reverse sunsets. I had about the same reaction to the sunset light there, as you had in Porto.

      @@KarinMajoka well, it's not my own definition, but it's simply photographing during the sunset with the sun behind you. The skies can turn all shades of orange, red, pink and purple, and if you are positioned in a good spot on the coast, where the water can mirror the colors of the sky, magic can happen. I posted some shots back in August on my Instagram account for digital photos, that are some of the most beautiful shots, I have ever done myself. No wonder painters have been painting those sunset skies for centuries.

    The Portra 400 is very versatile use. If you meter on shadows in high dynamic range situation you have an enormous headroom in in the highlights. Did try out to overexpose 2 or 3 stops to force pastel look? With a ISO 400 film the expose time is faster than 1/60 sec. So it is possible to shoot by free hand in bright light. If you do this with ISO 160 overexposing time will be longer than 1/60s and critical to shoot by free hand.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад

      That is true! I overexposed my shots by one stop for these rolls here.

    • @thorstenjaspert9394
      @thorstenjaspert9394 Год назад

      @@KarinMajokamy experience is that every film can stand it to overexpose one stop. Especially if you have dark spots in the background, like trees in the shadows while sunset. One stop more can saves shadows to bright midtones highlights can be darken in post-processing., But it is frustrating pull up shadows. Black stays black. There is quiet no information inside. Total opposite to prices digital Raw files.

    Hi! I started shooting very recently and I have a few questions after watching a lot of your videos:
    1-I tried using fast film in sunny days and the colors and the saturation were the opposite of what I expected. Do you usually under/overexpose your pictures or do exactly what the lighmeter suggests?
    2-I live in an area where fog is pretty common and I always wanted to go outside and photograph on foggy days. However, I'm quite affraid of fungus and camera damage in general. Is it dangerous? Do you do some type of aftercare when you arrive home after foggy trips?
    3-I absolutely loved your Porto pictures and I'm really excited to see more of your vlogs in my country. Besides Lisbon, did you go somewhere else?

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  Год назад +2

      Hi! 1.) I with color film I ofter overexpose by at least a stop. Here as well, I shot the first roll at ISO 200. With black and white I often stick with the meter reading / box speed unless I consciously decide to push my film. 2.) With fog you should usually overexpose as well to get the fog white instead of greyish because internal light meters usually meter for a neutral grey. Where I live we (sadly) don't have a lot of fog, so I never had an issue with aftercare. If it's really moist outside you could put rice or silica gel bag into your camera cabinet/bag to be sure. 3.) Thank you! :) No, mainly Porto and Lisbon, but we explored a bit of the smaller cities and outskirts around those areas as well as for example Sintra.

      Portra is a very versatile film with great latitude. It does not have so much grain and is especially popular for the beautiful skin tones and pastel like colours when being overexposed. You can surely use others films (for my episode in Lisbon for example I used some Kodak Gold, which is less than half the price of Portra!) but the results are rather different.

There they have unbelievably strict image rights laws and just taking a picture of a boat or building that you don't own can get you into trouble.

    Hi Karin, I have been always wondering that have you been in trouble with shooting photos for the strangers. From what I saw in your video, you had not asked their permission and just took the photos, then sharing them with us. I'm curious how could this work as I'm trying to do the same street photography. I'm always worrying about whether they would not allow me do so or they would directly call the police and sue me for taking photo without approval.

      The law varies from country to country but even in the strict countries you will rarely get into trouble unless someone wants to make a formal complaint and go through a legal process so mostly people like celebrities can do that or you publish photos that become viral and don’t have permission from the people in the photos.

      @@sexysilversurfer Thanks for your reply. Yeah, for the aspect of law, maybe ordinary people do not wanna pick that way. But for the aspect of etiquette, I wonder if it is a good gesture to ask the permission first. I'm just saying not judging anyone here. If there is a facial management failure, I think I would not want my photo to be shown to the public.

    Great video, I'm glad you liked our city. But I didn't like your choice for the background music, it doesn't match the city vibe.

      Thank you! Maybe the music does not suit your impression of the city since that is very subjective. It definitely suited my experience with Porto, which is why I chose it. However, I would have preferred to use Portuguese or Fado music as well, but could not find any licence free options.

      @@KarinMajoka Yes, tastes are always subjective. But as Portuguese it is a strange combination. Keep the good work.

    I find the Spanish soundtrack a very poor choice for a Portuguese vlog.

      I see your point - but please read the video description. When publishing videos online copyright is always a big issue. I looked for portuguese and fado music specifically but could not find any copyright free tracks. Therefore I had to find an alternative that still somehow ressembels the warm and upbeat mood of the city - and this is the closest I could find.
