Visiting Leica HQ in Wetzlar, getting my M6 fixed + B&W slide film workshop (VLOG)

- In this video I spend a day in Wetzlar at the Leica Headquarters. I attended the "vintage weekend"-event in Oktober 2021 which was packed with talks, workshops, gear specialists and of course a ton of awesome cameras. Apart from getting my Leica checked-up and adjusted, I also spend the day shooting learning black and white slide film development. For that I shot a roll of Adox Scala 50 in my Leica M6 paired up with my 15mm Voigtländer Super Wide Heliar.
Special thanks to Lina, Johannes and Giulia for the workshop!

Literally, the first frame of the video is just the bus stop I get off at every morning.
Oh wow, a tuneup and a focus fix by Leica themselves is a phenomenal bonus! I too had too much fun popping that Redrum lid ... ha ha. Also, I love how the Leica buildings have rangefinders. :)
I did not even know they had that service that day - so it was a very welcoming bonus! Haha yes, that packaging is brilliant.
How cool. Black and white slide film! Amazing.
I had that "OMG!" Moment not long ago, the first time seeing my own slide film after I developed it. Such an awesome feeling. Great video!
Absolutely, it was like pure magic again! Also it's so awesome to see the images straight away and not in form of negatives.
Karin!! These black and white photos were sooooooo cool. The wide angle lens really made these shots and compositions so much more interesting. The film was very smooth and clean! I typically enjoy grain but I really enjoyed your photos here! Making want to purchase a wide angle hahaha
Thanks for your kind comment Sheree, I really appreciate it! :) Same here - I actually like my grainy and gritty HP5, but super smooth and clean b&w images have a special character that is hard to describe. And yes, the 15mm is so much fun, good luck resisting the GAS haha
Love how you presented the photos 😍 You're good at this vlogging 🍻
Thank you, Alex ✌🏻
👏🏼
Good thing you got your focus adjusted. Wouldn't want to miss focus with that 15mm LTM lens! LOL
"Look up, look down, look all around" the mantra of 'Yoga Photography'. You should market the concept as a way to combine art fitness and mindfulness!
I have heard of beer yoga, cat yoga and other things before - but photography yoga sounds like the way to go!
that looked awesome. congrats on developing your own film too. great work
This is an extremely unique video. Thanks!
Thanks so much for your comment :)
Great video, I'm so jealous! I can see in the preview that you finally gave up to GAS with that Fuji GS645... ;-)
Oh snap, you have a good eye 😉 (but little spoiler: it's not mine... yet 🤫)
Awesome idea with the slide presentation! I really enjoyed this.
Thanks for your comment, Phil. :)
@@KarinMajoka Hat Spaß gemacht und war nachhaltig - kurz danach ist eine M5 bei mir eingezogen ;-) .
Nice, the slides are so sharp! 😊
Thank you :)
Wonderful one! So so great place! Awesome!
Thanks for your comment :)
@@KarinMajoka What happend to your Leica? Was it remedied? More power!
Thx for sharing, great video, and a bit Leica jealous now ! :) looked like an awesome day
Thanks for your comment Anders, it was a super fun day indeed :)
I really liked the slides
oh mannnnnnnnnnnn I wish I could have had my M7 checked for free lol. Thanks Karin nice video!, only thing missing was Samuel :D.
I was so shocked that it was free haha. It was a super spontaneous trip, but it would have been cool to have Samuel there indeed!
@@KarinMajoka thank you for sharing your adventures with us!. 😀
Really enjoyed this episode! Especially seeing the film slides looks pretty cool.
Thanks for your comment, glad you liked it. :)
Klasse Fotografiert ist eine Reise wert nach Leica in Wetzlar
A wonderful video Karin!!
Thank you, I appreciate it :)
very nice video, seems to be a perfect day for you. I never been there, maybe this summer
all the best for 2022
You should visit if you have the chance, it's worth it! :)
Those slides are amazing! - fantastic video once again.
Really appreciate the comment, thank you! :)
Awesome video! I loved the way you presented the black and white slides in the middle of the video :)
Thank you Reimann, I appreciate it :)
After a long time you uploaded this one. That was interesting. Thanks!
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it!
Great video!
Awesome video! Really enjoyed your shots and how you scanned/filmed them!
Thanks so much for your comment, I really appreciate it :)
Photos look amazing, Karin! Love seeing it on the negative as well. Such a cool perspective
Thanks Benj, glad the way of presentation worked well :)
Now you make me curios for adox scala. I use adox rodinal for my b&w development. But I will try this also. 😄😬 Thanks for the video!
I ordered a couple of more rolls of Adox Scala 50 and cannot wait to shoot them soon. The process is truly magical :)
really love how you choose to present the results of the film roll, very aesthetically pleasing.
Though the shaking text was a little difficult to focus and read for me, not sure for other viewers.
Thanks for your feedback, I will take that into account for the next time. :)
I agree, shaky text was not enjoyable
Great video Karin! It was nice that Leica gave you a free ‘tune up’ of your M6, excellent customer service!
I used to home process colour slide back when it was the older E4 process and you had to re-expose the film to light part way through the development process and you having to do this with the Scala 50 film reminded me of those days.
I also loved your initial reaction to seeing your fully processed B&W slides coming out of the tank for the first time!
Showing the B&W slide film along the video was a great way to show your shots. My favourite was the one of you taking your reflection in the giant mirror; I also enjoyed you doing the ‘Downward Karin’ yoga pose to get one of your images ;)
That’s super interesting, I did not even know before that there was an E4 process. Must have been nerve wracking every time! Thanks for your comment, Kevin :)
Super cool day you had Karin! What a great experience, thanks for sharing! I loved your images, too, some very striking compositions. Well done!
thanks for your comment, I appreciate it a lot :)
Thanks for this amazing video! Definitely makes me want to try that B&W slide film inversion process 🙏🙏
It's magical, you should give it a try once you have the chance :)
Slide film is magical - I’ve only shot Ektachrome and Provia, but I imagine black and white is also amazing in slide form
I have shot some color slide film every now and then as well - it’s super impressive, but somehow black and white slide film is next level!
I really enjoyed this episode! Cant wait to see the new episode you sneaked peek! 🔥
Thanks :) currently working on it, hope it won’t take too long to be finished
Such a cool video and Lina is the best!! I've wanted to try the Scala developing for so long, your shots are so good :)
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it! Oh yes, she is awesome and a master in the darkroom.
I just love your videos. And I´m really up to try B/W slides now. Thanks.
Spoiler altert: B&W slide is addictive, so better be cautious 😬
@@KarinMajoka 😂😂😂
Tolles Video, danke für's Mitnehmen...die Bilder, die du in der kurzen Zeit geschossen hast, sind auch sehr cool.
Vielen Dank für den netten Kommentar! :)
Zehr Interessant ! Vielen Dank ! I used to do reversal B&W processing to make Lecture Slides when I was a Photographer in London University College 1962-1970 and make up the formulae from the Chemicals !
Wow, that is really impressive! Black and white slides are just magical, I am glad that companies like Adox keep chemicals for consumers alive :)
Happy New Year!
Thanks, happy new year to you as well!
That was so cool... I wonder what they would have said looking at my very old Leica 1C ? 😁
I actually had to google the Leica 1C - what a pretty camera!
@@KarinMajoka It really is. I got mine thanks to my grandfather's exquisite taste in camera gear 😎
Guten Rutsch!
I am at work now, I am excited to watch this video. 😄
wow the black white slides were wicked!
Thanks for your comment ✌🏻
Those b&w slides look amazing. I need to try that some days. Maybe you know it, but Bellini also produces a b&w reversal kit that is stress free from the step that requires you to expose the film to light, making it a bit easier compared to the Adox or Foma kits.
I actually had no idea there are other b&w reversal kits out there - thanks for the info! I might to some research on it :) The part where you get the film out mid developing is super intimidating, yet also somehow a lot of fun though 😬
@@KarinMajoka Yes your "mixed feelings" at that moment was nice to watch :) Bellini is the italian unsung heroe of film chemistry. They even have a so-called liquid version of XTOL (so far so good for the few films I processed) and their C41 kit is amazing.
@@Thorpal The liquid version of XTOL sounds really interesting, I will surely investigate on that and maybe try it out since XTOL is my go to b&w developer. Thanks!:)
@@KarinMajoka Bellini makes a lot of interesting chemistry. Besides liquid Xtol, they also make liquid Diafine. Their b&w reversal kit is interesting, but unfortunately not very economical. Other reversal kits worth mentioning are the one made by Rollei (difficult to get nowadays) and the one called Roba Apposta (this one also works on black and white darkroom paper). If you're brave enough, you can also mix your own kit from raw chems according to Ilford's instructions (I'm not :P).
@@Thorpal there is also a company here in Canada called Flic Film that make a Xtol like liquid as well I just bought some and can't wait to try it.
such a good way of showing off the slides
I did not cut the roll because I felt like it was more appropriate to look at it as a whole :) Thanks for your comment!
Wow! I’d fly to Wetzlar with my M6 for a free checkup! Haha
I guess it was not a full and proper CLA - but still worth it! The flight is probably even cheaper than the regular price for a check-up like this there haha
That was a good video
Thank you :)
That looked like so much fun.
Now I want to develop B&W transparencies. I can not wait to try that.
It is so much fun, you should try it if you get the chance! :)
@@KarinMajoka I've already bought the kit of developer, finding the film is tough though. I ordered 2 rolls of Rollei Ortho 25 and two of Rollei Copex. Both are suitable for transparency, ie. clear base.
One problem I am having is finding data for film other than Scala; time/temp info.
Have you seen any other data? Please share if you have.
Thanks again for producing great content, this episode was really good. And many of your pictures were very good.
Your M6 looks pretty and immaculate. Developing the scala looks so intimidating, I feel like I'd mess it up all the time
Hi Karin! Great video! Really enjoyed your shots of the architecture. Also the theme of yoga photography definitely has a potential.. compose your image on the inhale.. press the shutter with your next exhale 🙂
Thanks for your comment, yoga photography sounds like a lifestyle, right haha? 😬 compose your body before you compose the picture
@@KarinMajoka there so many parallels between the two, there should be a way to bring them together :) . Maybe I shall ask Alec Soth - he is a certified laugh yoga instructor :) and his channel is also very inspirational.
Awesome video ! Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Filming the slide film was a super cool idea, it worked beautifully 👍
Thanks so much for your comment. :)
Great video!! I felt sad when it was over. I also really love that outro! Pls keep it in future video’s!
Hmm, good idea actually 🤔 thanks for the input!
Uber-Awkward sounds much better than super-awkward.
Good exposures.
thank you ✌🏻
🔥 Awesome video, as always. I loved the B&W slide film images and how you displayed them. Very inspiring video!
Thanks so much for your comment, I appreciate it! :)
Loved the M3 with the wide angle lense that had the goggles. Have that set up on my M3 that my dad got in Germany in the 1955. I also have an original Lietz 35mm film cassette. These are typical over engineered and is the reason for the camera's bottom plate twist lock. As you turn the lock the cassette is opened so the film is not scratched by the felt found in modern cassettes. Of course the cassette was brass and very expensive, just like M3. When I loaded bulk film I used a film loader to make it easy.
In future please don't use animated text, us old people have hard time read it
So jealous! Great video. I want to try Scala but am seriously intimidated by the developing process.
Thanks for your comment :) Oh yes, I totally understand! Lina made it look easy, but I am still super intimidated by the process as well haha
The Voigtländer 15 is a cool lens! And it works very well with B/W on a M6. You use them well. Cool worskop :-) I hope I'll make a visit to weetzlar some day :-)
Thanks for your comment! I love this lens as well, wonderful little piece of glass :)
That film looks so good. I'm not sure if it's just the shade of the buidings you were photographing, but the midtones looked on the lighter side without loosing the darkness in the blacks. love it.
I totally agree, I feel like the film as a pretty impressive dynamic range for a slide film with really nice tonalities.
@@KarinMajoka The reversal process expands the dynamic range.
I haven't got myself setup for it, but thought s good test would be to shoot a roll taking 3 shots of a subject, first a normal exposure, next expose for the shadows, next expose for the highlights, then process as a reversal.
The best part would be scanning - not having to reverse reverse the image in post should make the process much easier.
Thanks for another great video!
thanks for your comment! :)
Very cool! Awesome images.
Thanks for your comment! :)
Wow, what a great event!
I wonder if they have similar events this year, around the same time as my summer vacation - I'll have to look into that.
Thanks for sharing.
I stumbled upon this event by accident, but I will surely keep my eyes open for future events from now on as well :) Fingers crossed there might be one during your vacation!
Finally managed to watch it, I don't like this vlogging style, I missed the cactus 😜 Nah just kidding, this was a very nice video.
The Leica looks like a nice place to walk around, but I am afraid they will come after me with torches and pitchforks if I walk around with my Fujica GW690 aka Texas Leica 🙈
The pictures on the Scala have a beautiful contrast and are just very nice framed/composed. And I think I think a workshop from Lina is very cool, I adore her enthusiasm.
As long as you don't show up with a Zorki or FED you should be fine :D just kidding, all shades and shapes of cameras are welcome I also "sinned" by using the Fuji GS645 on the premisses. Lina's photography work is fantastic and she is also a great teacher :)
"..hoping for a bit more shadows and LEITZ..." ha ha. joa. spannendes dieser scala50.
Jaja, ich konnte den Witz nicht lassen :D Der lässt sich übrigens als Dia aber auch als normaler Negativ-Film entwickeln. :)
Great video as always👊🔴THAT LECIA VIBE🔴👊
Thanks for your comment. :)
Somewhere that I’m definitely planning to visit in the near future as soon as you know what is more managed.
Voldemord? 😬 No no, I get it, fingers crossed you can make it one day soon!
Nice video. Thanks for share. I hope you'lI make in the future maybe a video about a "Leica Werksführung".
Thanks for your comment :) if I get to know any Leica connections that would be awesome 🤔😬
@@KarinMajoka Sorry haven't got any special connection to leica wetzlar. but just ask leica and good luckat it. i would be happy for you.
Omg I must try this one day! That was so cool!
B&W slide film is pure magic - you should try it if you get the chance! Thanks for your comment. :)
5:07 nice kostenlsoer rangefinder checkup. Schwarzweiß Diaentwicklung ist echt spannend. Sehr schönes Video. 👌
Danke für den Kommentar, Dan :)
Great video, definitely would love checking out the Leica shop.
On your Cinstill XX b/w film, that’s not a positive b/w film is it?
Cool video
Thanks! :)
Loved the filming of the slides instead of scanning
thanks for your comment! :)
Awesome video! Thanks for bringing us along. Which external 28mm viewfinder are you using? Is it the Leica one?
I am shooting with a 15mm lens and the viewfinder is the Voigtländer 15mm finder that originally came with the ultra wide Heliar lens.
Happy New Year!!! I'll have to try out some of the Scala 50. Should be interesting!! Yoga Photography....nah, not for me!!! I could get down, alright. But, it's the getting back up that worries me. I don't bend like I used to!!! :P
It's such an awesome film, I am sure you will enjoy it! Hahah, safety first let's not break any legs for some good shots 😬
Nice episode.
Great vlog Karin!
Thank you :)
I have the same ostrich skin titanium M6, which I bought in Beijing for an astronomical amount of money in 2008 or 2009, around $2500. It was second hand, and had a slight bent on the top plate, so I thought I was ripped off. I used the Voigtlander 35F1.4 lens with it, and it took phenomenal photos. I barely use it these days. But it’s good to learn something about it from your video. Maybe I’ll use it again when the weather here turns better in the spring
For today's standards 2,5k is probably considered a "good price" for a Titanium M6. But I totally understand why it felt like a fortune back in the days! Hope you get to use it some more again in the future :)
@@KarinMajoka Mine's serial number is 1918677, imprinted on the hotshoe. Do you know where I can find more information about it?
@@darrenchang2907 You can see if you can find anything useful here: www.cameraquest.com/mtype.htm
@@KarinMajoka I found it! amazing! thanks!
Karin -
Greetings!
I haven't commented in a while (actually, I've been off RUclips for a while).
Your channel has taken off!!!! Congratulations!!!
I have some of your videos to get caught up on (I'm always watching your videos late into the morning on my end - it's currently 525am, so going to call it an evening and get a couple of hours of sleep). 8>/
I was wondering if you would mind sharing some of your video creation tips/methods (the camera, lens, editing/graphics software)? I'm going to go back through your earlier videos to see if you mention that already. I seem to recall I had asked that before, but I can't find if I did.
Thanks in advance for your help (and apologies for the inconvenience).
Best wishes on continued success! (and thank you for your videos!).
Oh - I'm in the US and considering sending my Leica out to the Leica doctor. Do they accept shipments, or only in person drop off? Thanks again!
Thanks for your comment :) And: No problem! Currently I am using a Sony ZV-1 for most of my videos purely because it is lightweight and compact. Sometimes I use a Sony A7II with a prime lens, but I get annoyed of carrying it around. For editing I am currently using Adobe Premiere Pro, I am dipping my toes into Final Cut Pro though.
Nice view into the Leica HQs :) ...I wonder whether the reversal process (second exposure) couldn't be chemical like in a E6 process.
Good question, I would be interested to learn about that as well. The part of exposing it again is so much fun though that I don't mind not having a chemical process for that haha
Lovely to see a video on the Scala 50. I remember seeing them as an Instagram story 😄 have you tried some more since?
Also, the home of Leica looks awesome! Do you know if they do these kind of workshops regularly (as far as pandemics allow) or was that a one off?
I have ordered three more rolls of Scala 50 but did not have the chance to shoot and develop them yet. They sometimes host events at the Leica headquarters, but to be honest I do not know how regular they take place. The "vintage days" there take place every year though I guess? 🤔
Hehe we had a great day at Leica in Wetzlar 📷😊
Absolutely ☕️📸
Wish I had known
My M6 was serviced in UK 6 months ago and since the light meter has gave out.
Oh snap, so sorry to hear that! This was not a full service by any means. They just did a check-up and adjusted the rangefinder. Still a lot for free - but probably not comparable to a full CLA. So having a proper service might still be worth it. :)
I have to admit, this is something I had never done. I did develop colour slide films, but never B&W. Damn...
It's never too late ;)
I am surprised the instructor would have you shine the light directly onto the reel, especially when it was translucent. Re-exposure should be done with the reel remaining in the water, to achieve diffusion of the light and thus more even exposure. Only if a reel is not translucent should it be removed from the water, as the light can not effectively reach the film in this case, but re-exposure will be suboptimal still for the reason already explained.
Just for the sake of heresy, i would probably use a praktica at such an event.
Hahaha, love it!
The Adox BW slide films are great. There is another one which has 160 ASA, which is a bit better for handheld photography (not to speak of all the other great films in the Adox lineup).
Still need to try the 160 version! Adox is awesome, all the film stocks I have used so far have been extremely high quality
i have the exact same M6 👀
Nice 💪🏻
Which film did you develop
11:00 Yogagraphy!
🧘♀️
shot 15 or so rolls with the heliar lens and goddamnit i was not happy with the results. How much is an m6 nowadays; already equivalent to an MP?
Oh snap, why not? I love this lens a lot and find it to be super sharp, sorry to hear you did not enjoy it
💖
Leicamagic.
I would like to think the guy would be a bit more gentle with other peoples cameras..Having to check the date the Titanium was made was a giveaway
The M6 Titanium was produced starting from 1992, so it makes sense to check on the serial number to identify the precise year
Do you know if there are any labs in the USA that develop Scala film? Or any other b&w film into slides?
If I have to buy a kit and develop Scala myself, do you have any info on that , as to cost, how many rolls per kit, etc?
Thank you.
I am not from the US, so I have absolutely no clue. Black and White reversal development is not cheap: in Germany the Scala kit costs approx. 40€ which is sufficient to develop 8 rolls of film.
Thank you
Nice tour and what a beautiful camera :) (I own a titanium M6 as well - love it!)
Was it just a one time thing that Leica offered a free inspection? It would be very cool to see this place one time along with a short checkup! :) Anyways, happy shooting!
Thanks for your comment :) I am not sure - to be honest I did not know this beforehand but also only found out they had the free check-up offer when I was there. I guess it's worth observing their website and keeping an eye open for new events there
Me wish for 2022. To talk about Summicron again instead of omicron.
The famous Leica lenses are also a contagious virus, but they have only a negative impact for your purse.
Hahaha, "Let's talk about Summicron instead of Omicron" would make for an awesome T-Shirt print!
