    Being an old rock n’ roller, Dana Colley from Morphine. First full on use of a bari I heard was in their song Buena. Bass, drums and bari. No guitar, so good. LeoP too. I’m starting to use some of his licks on tenor, love how he can build the energy in a room. I’m hoping to have a bari by this summer 🙏

    • @ScottPaddock

      Morphine!!! Yes, they were one of the firsts to really use a bari sax like that.

    Absolute favourite Bari sax player of all time is Leo P. His best solo would be the intro of moani’n. Not only does he play the sax, but he dances with it. Does jumps kicks and is super good with things like overtones. It is a must check out. I’m sure I’m just looking at his solo will change your opinion.

    • @ScottPaddock

      Yeah, Leo P is a killer on the bari sax, and that Moanin video is great! He redefined the role and sound of the bari sax.

    I played bari for years and miss it sometimes, but just don't have a place where I could realistically practice it if I had one. I remember freaking out when I first discovered Edwin McCain while he was touring as the warm up for Hootie and the Blowfish around 1996 or 97 because there was an extended bari solo in the tune Jesters Dreamers and Thieves. The solo is still there in the version on the Honor Among Thieves album, but the extended solo blew teenaged me away because it was the first time I'd heard anyone really play a bari outside of a school band.

    Tremendous video. I played bari in high school and it was the most fun I had in band. I really wish I had a reason to invest in a new bari to play these days. As far as favorite players, Doc Kupka will always be my idol (I used to warm up between my two high school concert bands I had to play in with the solo rhythm from Soul Vaccination just to entertain my dad in the crowd), but Mike Terry who played those iconic Motown riffs has been someone that has really really wanted me to pick up bari again.

Thanks Scott for these advice… comes right in time before we play next week the trick for fast breathing works . my fav bari sax player is by far Leo P he inspires me to keep going and pursue my dream career as professional bari sax player, my fav solo by him is definitely white lava go check it out its absolutely fire. also just a quick tip when you're playing any sax expecialy if you're performing i recomend dancing, this may sound a little much but it certainly helps me a lot with keeping time and it also gives music a lot more character and shows that music isn't always just sound and you can also feel emotions that you would with listening my just watching.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  Год назад

      Hey Noah! I agree - Leo P is awesome, and he has been fantastic for the bari sax world. I agree with some movement when you're playing. You don't necessarily have to dance around but you don't want to stand there like a statue. A little movement adds to the groove! Best of luck in pursuing your dream 🎷

    Scott what is it about the PMauriat sax that won you over? I noticed that all your horns are Mauriat’s. I’m not experienced enough to really rate horns. I have a 66RTenor but play a VI because of the lighter weight, key height and hype. I do like the dark tone of the PM. Why do you prefer the PM? Just curious.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  Год назад +1

      Hey Noah, I just fell in love with the P. Mauriat 67rx from the first minute I picked it up. I love how fat the sound is, how crisp the articulations are, and how easy it is to play. When I was searching for a new alto, I played about 100 saxes over 2 years, and the second I played this one, I bought it and never played my old horn again, which was a Yamaha Custom.

    Scott - what mic were you using on that bari?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  2 года назад +1

      I use a Shure clip-on mic, which is definitely not made for recording bari. The sound is really thin, so I double the track and add a virtual bass amp and lower the volume of the 2nd track just so it adds fatness to the tone.
