My high school would provide dirt cheap instruments to anyone who didn’t have one and they had a bari so I think you’re wrong
YOURE SO RIGHT😂
I almost had a seizure when you put affordable and bari sax in the same sentence
Depends how much YOU can afford, doesn't it?
same
You could just say:
Bari Saxes (saxi?) are not affordable
@@kianasears463 as for me, and many others
Shii that’s what I said
Listening to the sound demo, the Singer’s Day saxophone seems like it has a little bit more edge than the Yanigasawa has a slightly cleaner tone. Regardless, they both sound great!
Jonathan Fragale exactly.
It sounds fuller and fatter to me than edgy.
I honestly like the edge on the sound. But that's because of me being a pep band player
I can’t tell the difference. It’s the same story, as long as the saxophone is in fully order, the sound is made by the mouthpiece, the reed and the player. Thank you again for a professionally made video, form and content.
Exactly! What we can't hear in the videos is how easy it plays. How ergonomically you can hold your hands, the strength of the springs, etc.
We'd need to hear a beginner trying hard to get a sound out of the horns and see if he/she fails more often on one than on the other. ;)
Jay may be so good that he compensates subconsciously for minor imperfections that can be serious obstacles for others.
@@berger6777 in that case he should have said it in the video... if not it's a sponsor...
There’s a point to which this holds true, but my saxophone is fully in order, and I need a new one soon. It just doesn’t do the things I need it to do. I have to fight good tones out of it, and it’s nowhere near easy to play more than one very niche style on it. Yes, for a much more causal player than I, it doesn’t really matter, but outgrowing saxophones is a thing.
(I’m talking about altos fyi, not baris yet)
@Jason Russo Well. You probably don’t know how a comparison test is performed. First step, you have to do the blind test, sometimes a double blind test. A real test is not a comparative test. A real test is that you are playing a song for an audience that doesn’t know that it is the saxophone sound that is tested. Then you do the same test with the same song for another audience that supposed to be similar to the first one. Then you create a questionnaire and ask about a lot including the sound of the saxophone. No way you will get different answers. The human mind is terrible to hear or taste differences. As long as the saxophones are in perfect order you won’t hear any difference when using the same mouthpiece, read and player. Anathotical evidence does not count.
Do not forget how much work goes into establish the optimum bore-design, the ergonomic details, size/placement of toneholes, the key-system-interdependency-design- etc. All that work is being stolen by copy-cats
I'd like to see a Straight Soprano Sax vs Curved Soprano Sax video
Straight all day the curved looks clownish 😅
Couple of comparison videos.
dawkesmusic Straight Soprano Sax vs Curved Soprano Sax
Sax.co.uk Straight Vs Curved Soprano 5:07
Personally I like the Arabic sound of the straight, don't like the two necks, prefer the one piece as octave mech looks flimsy. Think the curved sounds strange, although Derek Nash blows one, got 5 of his CDs, seen him lots.
PS If you go on long drives his Flatiron Suite is soothing - seen it live - omg what a marathon blow!
Ryan Harvey hell naww the curved sounds wayyyyy more pleasing
Ryan Harvey it may look like a toy, but it does stop non musicians from asking, "Oh my god is that a golden clarinet?"
It sounds like the singer's day has more of a buzz almost.
yesssss
Ya
You mean more edge?
I play bari in school but I’ll soon be graduating and will need a bari sax of my own to play since I won’t be able to use the school’s anymore. Online I can hardly find baris under $5000. This video was perfect and very helpful! Thank you 🙏🏽🤗
Pipsiroller I have the same issue but I play tenor. I’m planning on doing a rent-to-own program from a local music store as my first big purchase as an adult.
Look at cannonball music Bari -- Bought one for my son and he loves it
I have the same problem. I’m playing a great selmer as a senior in HS this year and don’t know what I’m gonna do next year

It's been two years since I purchased my Singers Day bari after seeing this video and the horn has held up under near daily use in practice and playing with a couple of bands. Thank you Jay!
Thanks for the follow up report. Very good to know but I’m not surprised.
That's useful info. I'm considering this horn. How is the comfort, ergonomic level? How does it feel in your hands? I play Mark VI tenor and alto.
@@kennethellison9713 The ergonomics work for me. The horn is much lighter than my brother's Yani, and I second the comment that mouthpiece, reed, and player make a huge difference in sound. I dispensed with the mouthpiece supplied with the horn asap.
@@lawrencewylie2374 Agreed, one's sound is one's sound. The feel of the horn is paramount. Thanks for your prompt reply :)

Theres the Sakkusu one for $5kish if somebody decides they desperately need a bass sax on a "budget"
You made me remember why I just LOVE playing the bari. All those fun deep notes you can have grace a performance, or have them dominate. The runs that end with a low note, it just kicks. I love it.

The Yanagisawa baritone has beautiful harmonics, more depth in its tonal projection, and a much richer sound. I'm not a saxophonist, just a crazy person who three years ago wanted to learn to play the saxophone by himself, and has learned a lot on this Better Sax channel...
uh...if you are a saxophonist, you are a crazy person. Sorry.
I believe this is the same horn I purchased from Kessler and Sons. Great bari sax! I play as a doubler and I can attest to its quality build. I actually traveled to their store in Vegas and tried the store demo b4 purchase. One of my best purchases ever. For $2400, I am well pleased with this purchase. For those doubters, try one for yourself b4 pushing away. You’ll be surprised.
he reviewed a bari but didn't play the moanin' lick :(
sad
After seeing this review, I finally saved enough money to get it, and I absolutely love it. I haven’t been able to play bari since middle school (college freshman now). It sounds clear and punchy and hits the low notes so well. Note that it does seem to like to play low notes a lot easier than the high notes. It’s a lot more responsive and better quality than the ones my school had (that were triple the price at least). It’s solid and doesn’t feel fragile. The case has lots of nice storage and handles. I’m even able to fit a few binders with my music in there. If you’re a poor working college or high school kid like me, then this is perfect for you.
Wow..finally a quality bari sax I can afford..thanx so much for this video..I definetly will order this sax...😎
let me know how it works out.
how it works?! thank you, I need your review either
I haven’t really heard any differences , you sound fat on both ! Of course interactive feelings are the most important . Great video !
Glad you chose dat grenade launcher-bazooka thumbnail , I voted for it haha
This comment made me realize just how bad music terminology would sound out of context
Wow I like the Singer's Day sax. There is no way I would pay more than 3x the amount for something with a minute sound difference. The first clip (the first few seconds of each) I felt that the cheaper one was more rich in sound. Later in the video the Yani matched the richness in some ways but.... wow! Nice review! Thank you Jay I have been waiting for this for a long time.
If owned a B901 for 23 years, it’s been perfect for all my needs. The intonation and ergonomics are fantastic
omg you are incredible. Finding an affordable bari seemed like an impossibility. Thank you!!
I just received my Singer’s Day bari a couple days ago., and I am very pleased with it. Keys are closely spaced (great for my tiny hands), have minimal excursion, and respond wonderfully. I originally ordered one when I first saw your video, but something happened to the order on the seller’s end and order was cancelled. As soon as it became available again, I reordered and was given a delivery date of mid-June. Man, was I surprised when it showed up last Thursday. It sounds great, and I love it! Thanks for the review!
If you dont mind me asking, where were you able to purchase it? Amazon is selling it for $4600 (instead of $2300) and it seems to be out of stock on the Singer's Day website.
@@michaeldk119 I bought it last April. They said I would get in June, but it was delivered within 2 weeks. I have played the heck out of it and I love it. I did pay about $2300. Sorry to hear they're so hard to get now.
I did get it from Amazon.
@@michaeldk119 they just restocked it on amazon and other sites
Do you know how much it weighs? I borrowed 2 different baris from 2 friends and stepped on my scale with and without the bari. One was 12 lbs and the other 12.5. I was wondering about the Singer bari sax?
Been waiting for this video foreverrrrrrrrr
Yes yes yes !!! love that Bari sound !
Absolutely beautiful sound! I used to play for a few years back in middle school; now that I’m in a metal band I’m looking to pick one up for some projects we’re gonna work on! Forgot how absolutely stellar this instrument sounds 🥲
The tone quality is so similar between the two. Amazing to see how good these less expensive horns are nowadays.
Thank you for your video. I like the way you explained the differences and pointed out the quality of the Singers Day. I'm looking forward to owning one.
This video is so helpful, I've been looking around for an affordable bari saxophone and I'm so glad he made this video, thanks Jay!!
You could also look at a Kessler Solist. I LOOOVE it and my sax teacher now recommends it to students. Less than $3000.
@@joannathorman6069 Thanks, I'll look into it too
thank you so much for this video. I have missed playing so badly and I have been looking for an affordable option that I can trust. Again, thanks so much!!
I appreciate your channel soooo much! Thankyou for the superb sax reviews.😀👍👏
Okay, so I just saw this video the other day and then purchased this horn on Amazon. It came in less than a week and it is AWESOME!!! I just can't believe how good it sounds. It actually got here before my reeds and mouthpiece which were ordered on the same day. The horn came with a reed and decent mouthpiece. Thanks so much for the tip. Breaks over, headed back to the shed.
Great to hear the shipping was fast and you like the horn!
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long. I’ve been trying to find a good budget baritone saxophone. Thank you for the post.
Loved the cinematic shots at the beginning.
I have been waiting for this video for a long time
Great video idea. I appreciate the analysis and really look forward to shopping for an affordable baritone sax soon!
Enjoyed the video. I live in China and contacted the manufacturer after seeing the video. They are an OEM for Conn-Selmer and GEWA as I understand. I ordered a Bari sax directly from them. Not the model you tested, but a bronze model (SDS-2019), which they sell as their "professional" model (abt. 2500 USD in China). I absolutely love it. Sounds amazing (with a JJ DV7 mouthpiece) and definitely well built as you show on the video. I've been longing for some time for a baritone sax in my collection (all Selmer Paris, soprano series III, alto Ref54 Hummingbird collector ed. and tenor Ref54 kookaburra collector ed), but was looking up against the investment of a Bari sax in the 10,000 USD price range to complete the Selmer series. This video made my day.
So.. here we are two years later. Is this bari still working out for you?
Every Tuesday im just waiting for you to upload some content, it entertains me so much and motivates me to continue practicing everyday. Good Work!!!
thanks, I've been uploading Wednesday lately though...
Finally I play bari and have been waiting for so long
That intro B-roll was so hot 🔥🔥🔥
Every video this man makes is so entertaining and i love learning new information from ever vid, i love the bettersax worksheets too! I’ve made so much progress and improvement on my playing. Thanks Jay
Great Review Jay. I guess I'll just have to tag that on to the ever-growing shopping list. It sounds great!
finally ive been waiting for you to make this video
My school has one of these and I play it! I bought a new mouthpiece and ligature, and I love it!
That is pretty amazing. Good sounding sax! I've got a Yani Baritone that I love. I had the opportunity to play it beside 2 Mark VI's and it held it's own very well. A bit brighter and better projection than the older Selmers. I did swap out the neck with a Selmer neck, which darkened the sound a bit.
Loved the intro 🔥
1:28 Not dramatic at all. Liked that change of pace with that hip hop tune showcasing the Bari.
You don’t talk about a couple of important things: 1) Are parts available for the cheaper horn when it breaks? 2) The durability (which you won’t know for awhile).
These clones, like this one, the saxes they are cloned from often are swappable with the hosts parts! I know this directly from my Tech!
@@XIIMonkeysMusicGroup not true and not even close to being right. Having run a shop that worked on horns, often times we had to make parts fit.
One thing that would make this great review even better is to hear from a repairman regarding the long term repair-ability of the horn.
A good bari overhaul is around $1,500 and will last 10 years for most players.
But if your repairman informs you that he can’t overhaul it 5 years in and it is already worn out, you would be better off going a different route.
They both sound like you. Once I bring one home it'll sound like me. Maybe I'll add a Bari once I get good sound out of my tenor, alto, or soprano. Back to practice. As always your videos inspire. Thanks Jay!
thanks man been looking for one
Great song choice to demonstrate the sound! Unchain My Heart is great song for bari sax!
I loved how you showed off the sax at the beginning lol. That was awesome
Appreciate the review… I’ve been thinking about getting a bari and re-learning how to play. Been near 40 yrs since I played but, I still miss the bari sax…
Awesome video, thanks for doing the research for me!
Stepping up the videography, looks fantastic!
I like the the sound of the Singer's Day.
This instrument is very, very underrated.
Needs more popularity!
My comment was first also great video, I’ve been waiting this for a VERY long time and It exceeded my expectations
I’ve been waiting for this...
This bari looks 100% identical to my Thomann TBS-150, even the engravinig is identical. They must be the same sax, with different branding. I'm extremely happy with my Thomann.
Also the Kessler & Sons Solist bari.
I did purchase this bari directly from Singers Day. I’ve owned it six-ish months now. Maybe that made a difference, but mine plays very well in tune. Very easy hit low A. I use a Jody Jazz HR* mouthpiece. Also, I found with Leger reeds I can get a little more bark out of it.
I play jazz, swing, Motown, and some rock. It’s working wonderfully for me.
I have a Thomann Bari pro PB model which is a grade up from the 150 bought it 5yrs ago for 2500€ but now is over 4K an excellent sax have gigged and recorded with it no problems.
Love your sound & how well you swing. 🎷 👍
The Singer's Day sounded great!
I want a bari so bad . Only time I even played one was at jazz improv camp and asked the kid that was playing if I could try it.I liked it and I honestly think I could adapt to it pretty well from tenor. The bari I played was a super 20, which was property of the university.
Thank you! I wasn't looking for a bari, but now I guess I am. Thanks for the review and the great lead. Hey! If the sax glove fits...
I have been in band for 5 years and had to quit due to back problems and schedule issues. I am gonna get a part time job for this sax! I have been having the ich to play for a while!
Time for the affordable soprano sax! Bought the Jean Paul as-400 you recommended and I love it! Looking for a straight soprano. Also that little cut you did for the singers day was dope.
That's good to hear. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on that same purchase, but I am so nervous.
@@Tigerblade11238 dude don't be. My only regret is not getting the silver one
You have brought great joy to me. I can now afford the best sax lol.
I like the the sound of the singers day. It sounds a little richer and fuller. Specially on the low notes
now its time for a bass sax review. this is getting costy!
:D i got a heart :3
Thanks for this incredible review. Much welcomed and overdue :-)
Based on your recommendations I bought this singer's day baritone saxophone in December, 2023 and it plays better than I expected but you will need to get a better mouthpiece. I bought mine from their B stock.
Thanks for the video..
So glad to finally get this video! At the same time though I'm a little bummed the bari is still so pricey. I had unrealistic hopes of what a cheap horn goes for. Probably worth pointing out to interested buyers that the excellent mouthpiece you're using is driving the enjoyable sound and will add $650 to the $2300 horn. Sigh... maybe someday. Thanks for another great vid!
Honest review. Thank you....
hey jay . you are still the best of the teachers on any tread .
to me who used to own a Conn 10 M both these two Bari's sound great .
They are both very professional instruments . if there is a difference its not
at all noticeable ..I play in two sax sections down her in Fla and sit next to some
varied Bari players and ive even seen a Bari made in China for $ 1000 that sounded pretty
damn good . Bobby G....
Both sound great to me. Can hardly notice any difference. If you move the stomach pad of the sax holder to the right a bit, it can help to even out the pressure on the shoulders, when playing with the sax to the right @Better Sax
Have Bauhaus Walstein low A and it is plays super even after 10 years. And in tune. Awesome horn
I bought a year ago a lightly used P. Mauriat Pro Bari sax on EBay. LOVE THE HORN!! Of course I got it for more than half the price of a new one
used is the way to go. I go that Yanagisawa used for a steal.
That's some nice new B roll footage
When you first started playing, I closed my eyes and listened... and waited for the tone/timbre/etc to change when you swapped horns. I NEVER heard the change!!! I then opened my eyes and was astounded that both horns sounded almost identical. VERY impressive.
My question is the about the left pinky finger table. I have medium hands and have an issue with getting my finger all the way down the Bb key. While the table on my bari is articulated, it is not scalloped in a way to help the fingers move around.
I just started bari, ill look into it
Hi Jay, my 6 year-old son loves your review videos. Thank you so much! Also, I know it's absurd, but he really wants me to leave this comment for you. I quote, trying to include his emotions: "Jay, PLEASE make a Bass Sax video. It WOULD BE AWESOME! Thanks!" Good luck finding a "cheap" bass sax on Amazon to review.... Thanks again!
Clean B-Roll🤩
i’ve commented this before but could you maybe look at the jean paul TS-800 or AS-800 , their pro tenor and alto, thanks
Thanks Jay. I finally decided to buy the sax. I had my eyes on an Allora ABS-550 Paris (Black Nickel) to match my Tenor that I oh so love. After thinking about the singer's day, looking at post construction and talking it over with my wife. We decided the best one to get is the Singer's day. $2400 after taxes compared to $3600 and more professionally built horn than the other that I wanted. I hope the horn arrives safe, if not I understand I can return the item. Anyway, thanks for being awesome. Now, to purchase my otto link bari mouth piece and reeds.
Good luck with the new horn
Thanks for the advice! Looks like a great horn. I really liked the sound of the Singer's Day over the Yani!
May i ask which ligature are you playing in this video?
that is a Rovner
NO WAY I MIGHT ASK FOR THIS FOR CHRISTMAS
I’d just recommend beginner or intermediate Yamaha models, those are great in my experience and are super fun to play
Great video and timely for me seeing that I just got a great deal (about half the price of the Singers Day) on a Jupiter JBS593-GL that looks almost brand new. It’s being adjusted by my tech now but the adjustments are minor and I’ll have it back tomorrow. BTW, after doing a little research, it looks like the Singers Day is a clone of the Kessler Solist (identical model numbers).
The pro horn sounded a bit better on the lower notes, but I couldn't hear any other difference. Great video!
they sound almost exactly the same, and its great quality! id think that the biggest difference is the build quality obviously
to me they sound the exact same, closing my eyes, I can't tell
Man, the sound comes from you.
Welp, I found my new bari sax for junior year
He has done it
At last! Thank you!
Thanks Jay, great video. Just a question: is the Singer a little bit harder to play? More effort, fatigue to play it? Just wondering, cause the 2 sound the same..
