At stock speed the W3690 Beats any Kaby-Lake quad core with Fast triple channel DDR3 (Samsung has CL 6 1333) while still pulling decent single threaded performance.
CL 9 1333 Ram x3 in Dell T3500 is similar to ddr4 3200 x2 (triple channel vs dual channel).

My X58 rig failed to boot last month. I hadn't had a chance to install the Xeon i'd bought to upgrade the i7 920 yet. She's been through a lot (from dual SLI GTX275's through to an RX480) and I'm hoping it was just the HDD but yet to do a post mortem. It really is amazing how long that system lasted compared to some of my more modern hardware that doesn't even seem to make the 2 year mark!
Resuming, you need to spend more than 3000% of money, to have only 33% more performance than a 10 years old CPU, fine, it's only Intel being Intel...

Well Intel can't optimize their 14nm process anymore, that juice is pretty much squeezed out from that orange. They keep pushing back their 10nm release due to ongoing stability issues. now there are rumors going around that they might abandon their 10nm process altogether as a result, which would be a disaster given all the time and money they spent on designing their 10nm. Intel is in a freefall right now. Meanwhile amd's ryzen is getting better and better with each passing generation.
Or maybe not every cpu is meant specifically for gaming,watch this i9 completely destroy the xeon in rendering,etc..

I am still rocking a i7 990x on a x58 board still runs most games over 80 fps
x5650 4.3ghz gtx1060 50fps max settings 60hz monitors. I see no real reason for $$$ to play AAA games yet.
@@fabronfretwell3257 any x58 that can run 4+ ghz is still fine for now, as long as you have fast ddr3 in triple channel mode (12 or 24 GB) and use only 3 sticks, it's faster so 4x3 or 8x3 :)

I do love to see some X58 loving! Its because of you I have my own X58 build based on an X5675 cranked upto 4.5Ghz and its a killer machine. Ill be revisiting it soon too to see if I can push things futher and to see how RAM affects it in terms of the amount (12gb vs 24gb) and if mixed modules has any impact on performance.

x58 is still pretty decent, I only moved away from it 12 months ago - and the only reason was for 4K editing.
Watching this video on my EVGA Classified board with a custom loop water cooled overclocked i7 990X! I can't give up this setup because it's still so relevant in my eyes!!

I have this x5660 xeon with 24gb ram and gtx1070, I'm really happy about it. I have since 2009 with i7 920. 2 years ago I switched the i7 to xeon x5660. I'm still with him today. incredible
Just got a Xeon X5675 for $30.
Got a EVGA FTW3 motherboard and 24 GB of Patriot DDR3 1600 for $175 this summer.. never OC'd a i7 920.
We've got the same board and CPU.
Was running my i7 920 at 4.2 GHz with hyperthreading on. At that point it was similar to a haswell i5 at the same clocks but a little better in multi-core tasks.
i got i7 920 on the same board clock at 4.2, around 650 on cenabench score

Amazing video. I use currently 6600 Core Quad from 2010 with a 1050 Ti and SSd for my main PC, and it runs just so fine.
Still proudly rocking Dual X5670s, since 2011, with the only upgrades so far being storage, and graphics every other generation (stock quadro-690-980-1070).

My x58 Xeon is doing just fine in 2018. I picked mine up for 10 bucks on ebay last year. Huge upgrade from my i7 930 quad core. Stress test for 24hrs highest temp was 71c max average was 63c at 4.3ghz Asus sabertooth x58 mobo. X58 was probably the best platform made in the last 15 years.
I've been using a x58 system for 3 months now (Rampage II Extreme, X5675 4.5ghz) and I'd have to say it's pretty good, but yeah the board prices/availability makes it not worth it most of the time. Also the lack of AVX makes it not suitable for certain tasks, but if you're just gaming with some multitasking it doesn't matter too much. I'm actually going to X79 (P9X79 LE, I7 3930k) in about a week when my parts get here. 6c 12t is a minimum to me so that greatly limits what platforms I would use and good ddr4 is too expensive. lol

@@bossthearpy I'm in Canada, B.C. We don't have micro center here, at least where I live anyways. And yeah, ddr4 is cheaper than it was a few months ago, but the higher speed stuff with good latency still isn't cheap enough for me to consider. Also, been using the x79 parts since the 5th and it's been good so far.
X5660, 32gb, and a rx 580. Nothing is overclocked and im still satisfied with vsync 60fps at 1080p. Coming from consoles this is all I need. I dont ever see the need in wasting big $$$$ on a new rig or buying a new console every 4 years when I can always save fortunes buying stuff from a decade before and overclocking it. PC master race💪💪
Sadly, despite the LGA 1366 CPUs being very affordable, motherboards for it are scarce and expensive and kills any chance of it being a value product, even when buying used parts.

This video is awesome, I'm currently reviving my x5650 and am blown away how well it performs with a modest 3.6ghz overclock. Literally shelved this old rig when I got my 4790k rig up and running and idk why I didn't just upgrade my x5650 computer.
OMG this guy!! Love it, I'm still rocking my Asus P6T went from i7-920 to Xeon 5670 running at 4.2 on H100i. Recently got a 1080ti (for 630!) instead of seriously considering a platform upgrade. Sure there is some 'bottlenecking' but hardly enough to warrant a new Intel platform.
I've commented before but I love bragging about my rig. Built the old girl in 2009 and still rocking the same mobo having upgraded ram and proc, a Xeon 5670 off ebay for $60. I bought an AIO watercooler less than two years ago to put off investing in a new platform and immediately took my old i7-920 from stock 2.66 to 4ghz with substantial performance increases. This x58 platform is getting a little old now, but almost a decade on it still incredibly impressive. I don't think it's possible to invest in a new platform today and get that kind of value, with that much overhead for overclocking and simply maintaining competitive performance numbers. ( I think I spent just over $600 for the P6T, i7-920, and 8gb corsair in 2009) Even now, it's impossible to justify a $5-600 investment for another 20-odd fps on my 130 fps in blops4. I'm hoping AMD brings the big guns with their upcoming 7nm process and I might pay attention if for no other reason than to see Intel get some serious competition again.
Noice. I have a P6T (I bought in 2009) as well and I upgraded my i7-940 to an x5680. No overclocking though. I wanted to create a top of the line workstation from 2010, earlier this year, by using a couple of Fermi based Tesla and a Quadro but the CUDA support is sooooo bad that most GPU accelerated workloads were finicky at best and strait up did not work at worst. No problems with Kepler though.
I would like to get my hands on a Tesla K20c but paying almost 400 dollars for a used GGPU that I would essentially use as a toy is unjustifiable. Instead, I run a k2000 and two k4000s as accelerators for very simple 3D projects when I want to goof around and hard-limit my scope via hardware restrictions so that I do not go overboard. I plan on adding a SAS card as I have a couple of SAS drives laying around and am thinking, why the hell not?

For me - 60 FPS is target and 30 FPS is min
It doesn't matter honestly anything higher than 60 for me because the monitors that are higher for me I dislike alot, I enjoy a really nice curved monitor at 60 FPS, so that's what I target, that's how I feel.

I got my setup 10 years ago to do a Hackintosh. It's the GAX58. Just spent $10 on 6G Ram for a total of 12, upgraded to SSD and she's still running fine. I don't do high end gaming and that's a key thing. For regular gaming and regular use, it's hard to beat. I'd like to do the Xeon upgrade, but I really don't need more than it's got now. Nice to know I can for so cheap.

Interesting to see how an old cpu can still game! Although I'd like to see this test done with a more realistic gpu, like a GTX 1060. If I had $1200 to shell out for a 2080 ti, I wouldn't be looking for a $20 cpu to pair it with!

While i agree that a 1060 is a more fair comparison, it does show how realworld bottlenecking is not really a problem for those x58 xeons.
Real decision is this: buy a $50 xeon and as much gpu as i can afford

What he just showed is it makes way more sense to do a cheap CPU upgrade on x58 and spend the extra money on a better GPU. (so get a 1080 instead of a 1060)
I am using a Lenovo C30 Dual Xeon system Originally, 2 X E5-2609s, now 2 X E5-2680s, 64 GB Ram. Baseunit was $US149+US$80 shipping, two E5-2680s were $US200 + $US25 shipping. 64GB Ram was $CAN72 from a local sup,us place. System was no built for gaming, but I do some light gaming on it. Cost for entire system was less than a Core i9 and X390 motherboard, locally. Graphics card is a GTX 1050Ti low profile. Works well for theboard layout/schematic captue/Spice simulations that I do with it. No slowdowns using it with Starcraft Ii, or Sins of A Solar Empire on a 27", 2560 X 1440 screen with maxed out settings.

Awesome video. I just upgraded my i7 2600K to a Xeon 5680 overclocked stable to 4.6 GHz (got a great deal on a complete X58 system and upgraded the 920 for 40 EUR).
Do x58 chips support AVX? Some newer games require it to run.

I'm still running a 2500k (2011, 4c/4t @ 4.6GHz) because Intel hasn't improved their CPU performance much yet their CPUs cost more and run hotter so it's basically mandatory to delid them. I'm waiting on 3rd gen Ryzen to upgrade now that games are starting to use more than 4 threads and it's becoming a bottleneck.

@@usherjaved103 no, the last 2 generations have 6 cores. I only know of 1 or 2 games that use more then 4 cores. Intel is the best for gaming, no questions about it.
I was debating on doing a 2700X build recently, this inspired me to look into further extending my first/current build (i7 930 @3.9, P6X58D Premium
, 24GB Memory, Sapphire RX580X and Various SSD's
) I just bought a 5680 along with upgrading to a simple CLC AIO. My board doesn't have native support of NVME but with an online workaround, was able to get one going and it's really nice so far. I still want to do a new build but this will be breathing new life into a very reliable and impressive platform.
On 3440x1440 or 4k the different between these two would be even smaller.

@@MadLustEnvy uwide is comparable (and in some cases even more) to 4K as it needs to draw 16:9 and additional stuff in the rest "5" (thats why some people consider 21:9 cheating and at least SC2 doesnt even support a uwide res)

Would be interesting to see how it performs with Dual Xeons. Old workstations and even the single motherboards are dirt cheap nowadays.
With 12 cores, the difference should be negligible for games which can use it.

As an X58 i7-920 4ghz user, I will buy a x5650 or maybe x5675 Xeon, cause I already have a P6T Deluxe V2, 24GB RAM 3x250gb SSD in RAID to maximize it's performance, and a 1060 6gb.
BUT the X58 lacks of (CPU) PCI lanes, PCI Express 3.0, SATA3, USB3.. men, I spent big bucks on hardware to supply that.
Not to mention that Intel doesn't support X58 for Windows 10, and IRST just doesn't work (then you can't have RAID advantages to overcome SATA2). Also AVX lack is a bich.
If I had to buy a new system right now, i will go to a X79 system like the one discussed here, it's a yes-yes in my opinion, and it's impressive.

We're running comparisons (F@H) of the 9900k vs 6-core X58's over on the GeForce forums and the numbers (price per watt per ppd) are leaning towards the X58 units.
Rite now I'm getting an average of 67k PPD on a pair of X5670's ($50 per matched pair) non-overclocked, on an Asus D12 motherboard. Great units!

Jamzy I did a lot of research into these X79 boards last week when I was building my pc before eventually settling onto X58 cuz I found a nice UD3R for cheap. But the thing with all of these huanan x79 boards is that they use the C602 chipset which was made for servers not the consumer “X79”. The only overclocking supported on these boards is basic BCLK overclocking which is extremely limited since there’s no voltage control. There’s a ton of bios limitations and for the price you’re paying it’s just not worth it at all. Just buy a good B350 board and a R5 1600 and call it a day or if you’re dead set on X79 look out for local deals.

i got a 4.3ghz with a e5-1650 quite nice, the memory i got was ECC-Registred 4x8gb 1600mhz, clock them at 1866 in quad channel, really nice rig :) especially with a 240mm watercooling near the vrm which acted like a exhaust for the vrm heatsink, real nice rig, try it :)
Yes Brian I'm still rocking an ancient asus p6t deluxe (version 1) at 4.2 GHz. It's now exactly 10 years in my possession but the 920 got switched for a X5670 3,5 years ago. I'm selling it soon and switching to another asus p6t deluxe V2 with a $24 X5650 that hasn't been OC'd yet and hope to get 4,5 GHz with it. I'll switch all that this summer for a spanking new Ryzen 2 Rig. I'm still getting all the snappy response I need coupled with a GTX 970 and a samsung pro 250 Gig SSD even with only the sata 300 bus. The only thing I've noticed is that it takes a good 10 seconds from power-on to bios. probably from running overclocked for 10 years :D

Ender Bartnik you have to get lucky, I got mine for 75$ with 12gb ram and a 950 i7. Most people sell just the board for over 150$
I'd try to look for i7 920 systems, they usually come with good mobos and then upgrade to tve xeon of your choice.

You are not future proof unless you buy a Z-motherboard. Even a measily 6400 can clock higher than any current Coffelake non-k-chip ever will (4.8 GHz) for mine. Either get at least i5 or stay with 1151 or Ryzen imo. Rather low clocked quadcores aren't futureproof, especially if locked from stable overclocking not affecting PCIe.

How do you oc on the workstations?
I started seeing your videos earlier this year and decided to build myself an x58 machine. From what I have done with it, it works great. It is currently used for gaming, however I feel it could do most anything I throw at it. I even got the CPU (x5675) to overclock to 4.2GHz. I could go higher with a better cooler (the configs are electrically stable), but with its current configuration it can already reach is TJunction in stress tests.

Z390/Z370 (To unleash I9-9900K correctly you need spend around $250-500 on just the Motherboard...) + I9-9900K $500-550+$120 for 16GB DDR4+Custom Liquid Cooler, I don't think many AIOs can do 5.0Ghz that easy... = So that brings you to around $1100-1400 or so.
If you screw up the steps and run at 4.2-4.6Ghz, that's near I7-8700K performance... so wasting your time and money.
You Can build around 5x X58 systems of the cost of the one I9-9900K

x58 does if you get the right mobo, p6tpro ws does from asus, not sure about x79/99. or z87/97, shall do some research methinks
it seems for x79 on asus that the ws workstation boards support ecc, but mainstream boards like the rampage 4 do not

Having a X5670 OCed to 4.35ghz running everyday the last 3,5years. The cpu is rock solid and very stable. X58 STILL ROCKS
One of the best cpus Intel gave was in Q9550, Sandy Bridge I7 2600k, later in Haswell I7 4790k... Everything else is bs...

Overclocked a X5660 yesterday on a stock cooler to 4 GHz and it's prime95 stable for 1 hour, so close enough :-) great chip!
My old X58 board was one of best boards I ever had. Shame a bunch of caps burst (from moisture in storage).
Would have been interesting seeing this up against something like 4770K or 6600K.

I have had a i7-920 nearly a decade. Still use it in my Win7 machine. Even picked up an x5675 to upgrade it.
My problem is that I can’t find any good x58 boards for sale. So I’m stuck with my ASUS Rampage II Gene.
I have a GA-x58a-ud3r v2 and recently swapped from an i7 930 and ATI 5770 to an x5690 and AMD RX 570. Good bang for the buck for a 9 year old system.

Once you compare the Xeon to lower priced CPUs on the market today, it compares well.
I have an AMD FX 8350 and Star Citizen maxes out all 8 cores quite often. The 6 core, 12 thread will be a good boost for me.
Yes, absolutely. I just upgraded from an i7-920 to an X5675 (for $30), and even on the old CPU, I was able to play most recent games at very good settings, given that I have an nVidia 1060...
A friend of mine gave me a "no display" R9 280X a year ago, so i brought it to my friend and he was able to bring it back to life. Later on i got offered to trade the 280X with a Rampage II Ex+ X5650 lapped from a guy in my city.
My first impression was, "wow, didn't expect it to get this fast". It ran daily at 3.7GHz since then til a week ago.. i wanna push it more, so yeah.. currently running it at 4.3Ghz daily with Xigmatek Aegir to keep it cool, it never touches 70 while gaming, but stress tests/physics test will have the temps up to a 69-73ish.
And what makes me happy about my 1366 was,, i literally only spend less than 10$ for the mobo and proc lol. That's the price i paid my friend for bringing the 280X alive again hahaha.
I guess i'll keep using this one with my RX 470, til the end of their life lol

I'm stoked .. haven't oc'd it yet as im after some cooler mounts or a cooler but you're right mate .. great package !! Thanks for the advice ... love old relevent gear
The only limitations I've found with coolers are the newer air coolers, for 1366 compatibility.
Im still using a ex58 ud3r with a XEON w3565 in my gaming computer. I love it and havent had any problems.

The X5650 is still in Cinebench, I built a bunch of them a few years ago for a client and they are rock solid and fast enough for their work. The down side is FSB and SSD support but they are still awesome computers the client doesn't want to upgrade any time soon.
I miss my x58 every day. I had a rampage 3 extreme with an i7 920 at 4,2 GHz in my main pc. I had to sidegrade to ryzen because the mainboard had seen better days. It still works though, so I guess I'll retire it on a server.
Been using a Gigabyte EX58 extreme motherboard with a Xeon X5690 circa 2011, with 12GB of RAM and a GTX 980 for 2 years now as my main computer. Runs well and very cheap.
I've bought a full Lenovo's S20 PC with Westmere W3680 (12x 3.33GHz) onboard for 170$ - absolutely fantastic value for the money!
i love these kind of comparisons.Bring sandy bridge and whatever else is old to the mix versus new CPUs.Just keep on overclocking the ram because low speed ddr3 is a huge issue in 2018

Thanks for the video. Gave me a little more faith in my PC which I have been running for the last 7 years. Upgraded the original i7-920 twice and am currently running the x5680 6c/12t @3.3GHz. It has been water cooled for the last 5 years (more for longevity and consistency, than for OC). But knowing the capabilities, I may be bumping this up soon, so again thanks for the info.

The rig I use for compositing astrophotography is a dell precision 7500 with 2x xeon 5680 ,an HD7950 ,an ssd and HDD,I paid 60 for it on gumtree and got the cpus on ebay, it makes 1500 cinibench multithreaded

I'm selling my x58 5660/gtx960 4GB system. Been sitting on and adding to my upgrade fund for quite a while because I really didn't need an upgrade but when Ryzen plus came out and I seen a good price for a 1070ti I decided it was finally time for an update. No regrets. 10 years is a stellar run.
Still rocking my X58 for the past 8 years. Don't see a need to upgrade yet. X5690 still king of the LGA1366. Over clock just shy of 4Gig. Never needed more.
Maybe the Z399 might tempt me next year
Replace it with a 95 watt X5675 and see 4.5, you will be much happier.
my little brother plays off a dell t3500 that got upgraded to an x5670 and for 15 bucks the cpu upgrade cost it does amazing work for what it cost even tho its not monster it does 60fps gaming just fine for him and never really holds back the 970 we got for a deal for it. alot of times people overthink the cpu when they are just gaming at 60fps most games are 100% gpu bound with a ok cpu chasing high fps can be a whole different beast in some games
Still have 2 x5650 based machines. They still perform well, even by today's standards. Yes the Ich10 chip runs hot and benefits from active cooling.
My x5660 rig still plays games amazing. Battlefield 4 runs at 150fps maxed out battlefield 1 gets over 100, valorant sometimes hits 300. Still very good
I replaced my w3680 system (o/c'd to 4.4hgz, 24gb ram, 3x ssd's, 2tb hd, blu-ray drive, etc.) a couple weeks ago with a 8086k setup (o/c'd to 5.2ghz, 32gb ram, m.2, ssd, 4tb hd, the old blu-ray drive). That w3680 was a good upgrade over the i7 920 c0/1 stepping that I originally put in the system and had drop in support on the Gigabyte g1 motherboard I was using. That x58 was a great little system that lasted several years and played games smoothly at 4k with high settings with a pair of gtx 970's in sli (I had replaced the 970's before getting the new system with 1070ti's that I picked up at launch). Anyway, the mobo was starting to show its age and was having random issues that were getting annoying. Instead of investing in another x58, I decided to put that money into a new system that I expect to have for several years. Night and day difference between the two systems in regards to performance (I'd sure hope so, anyway!) and if I manage to blow up the new system, I'll still have the old one to kick around. lol Anyway, nice video. It would have been nice to see what difference it would have made if the 9900k was dropped to 4.5ghz for all those tests (architecture differences aside).
I loved my X58... just sold it this year for a Ryzen setup. Still holds a place in my heart. Was always snappy, and ran great. Likely seeing a PCI limitation on x58.

I'm running an Gigabyte X58a-UD3R with an i7-990x @ 4.5 and 24gb ram and have been wondering if i should upgrade my R9-290 to something more relevant or whether i'd have to replace the whole system and this has shown me there is life in my current system! new GPU it is!

I have a 6 core 12 thread 8th gen i7, would be more interested to see how that stacks up to the $20 Xeon.
I also still have my Rampage III extreme, and had a i7-980x stable at 4.5Ghz. But, I pushed it too far trying to get 5.0, and killed it - replaced with a $50 ebay'd Xeon w3680 (also unlocked multi) and it's stable at 4.5 all day on 1.325v. Temps idle at 19c in a 22c room, max out around 55-60c under full load using an old H70 AIO cooler too.
Such a solid mobo for its time.
Too bad it just sits under my desk, only used for virtual machines and light web hosting work now. It will probably be another 8 years before I get rid of it.

my i7 3930k is running on a rampage iV gene mobo and its stable as hell.
im running Manjaro Linux as an os and this CPU runns BF4, NFSH, Minecraft modpacks, Virtual machines like a champ.
Would be great to see the generation increases, lock the 9900k to 4.5 with 2 core disabled?
I'm still gaming on x58 :) i7 930. 1080p 60fps all day everyday. Never had a need to upgrade the CPU and this video shows why.
