Mindful tips on how to run on a Plant-based diet with Scott Jurek, world-famous ultra-marathon champion and Waylon Lewis, eco nachos champion.
I used to feel the same way about calling myself vegan. I didn't want to be like "this" person or whoever. Once I did more thinking I realized that I am vegan, Im not changing myself to appease others. I'm the same person I was before I was vegan. Just more compassionate. The point is, if you're vegan for the animals, you don't have to turn into some jerk now. Just be you. Be radically kind.
This is awesome.. I just started "running", at age 45. I just learned about Scott Jurek, after his new AT record! Talk about an incredible human, so inspiring..I also call my diet a Plant-based and am turned off by the word "Vegan" now. I am not a good runner at all but I am falling in love with doing it.
Great interview! I felt like Scott was able to be so open and share so much valuable wisdom because the host was really listening and connecting.
Jurek is undoubtedly one of the greats, but Yiannis Kouros, of Greece, is the greatest of all times. He is the world record holder for 24 hours: 188.59 miles, or 303.506 km. Kouros also holds world records for runs of 48-hour, 200km, 6-day, and multiple other world records, including the fastest 100 miles ever at high altitude (Mexico City), around 11 hours. Jurek knows of and respects Kouros tremendously, as is apparent from his interview at the Spartathlon.
nico michael is it not zach bitter?
You should have read Scott's book prior to the interview (09:05). It blew me away that you did not do this. The book is so well written, about many things outside of running, easy to read and just flows....a straight forward and enjoyable read. I think it is rude that you did not do this. The guy is a legend. Perfectly humble. You owed him this.
That said. Thanks. I appreciate the video.
+Philip Evans I did study, but that said, our interview series is meant to be accessible to the average woman or man. Not for experts. Sometimes, it's helpful to start on the ground floor.
running technique, diet, philosophy, this was a really great interview to watch, thanks
+lane An appreciative positive comment! Thank you!
Read Born to Run. I'm currently in the middle of it. Brilliant.
What's with all these comments? Haha. Scott seems so down to earth, I appreciate that. This was a great interview, and your shorts are rad.
A few folks on youtube love to comment about everything but the content. Scott is a great guy with great info!
@@elephantjournal great video!
So very, very lucky to be out there running and talking with Scott!!! I am envious! :-)
+Alessandra Verduzco great human!
After watching this several times over the years. I'm pretty convinced that that man interviewing Scott has never ran a day it is entire life it's kind of cute. 🙏
C'mon now! I run at least 3x a year!
I love the style of the video!
Great questions, music and humor. Love it
And Scott is a really interesting guest
Very cool. Training for my first marathon now, and find Scott Jurek very inspiring. Done some natural running, as you call it, for several years but exclusively for the last 15 months. My husband has been running totally barefoot for the past year, but did hurt his knee recently. Brother in law is an ultra runner, and I don't even know how he does it, but would love to try it myself someday. Thanks for posting this.
Don't do marathons it is bad for your health
Did you manage?
Thankyou! Laughed and enjoyed this interview so much!
GREAT INTERVIEW!
One of the best Scott Jurek interviews
Amazing ultra trail runner. Where I live there are so many great trails Its healthy and so much to see . A hawk flew at me on the trail the other day near the PCT

THAT IS A MYTH!!!
In 1981, Lappé relaxed her position on protein combining in a revised edition of Diet for a Small Planet, in which she wrote:
"In 1971 I stressed protein complementarity because I assumed that the only way to get enough protein ... was to create a protein as usable by the body as animal protein. In combating the myth that meat is the only way to get high-quality protein, I reinforced another myth. I gave the impression that in order to get enough protein without meat, considerable care was needed in choosing foods. Actually, it is much easier than I thought. "With three important exceptions, there is little danger of protein deficiency in a plant food diet. The exceptions are diets very heavily dependent on [1] fruit or on [2] some tubers, such as sweet potatoes or cassava, or on [3] junk food (refined flours, sugars, and fat). Fortunately, relatively few people in the world try to survive on diets in which these foods are virtually the sole source of calories. In all other diets, if people are getting enough calories, they are virtually certain of getting enough protein."
All you Yiannis Kouros fanboys shouldn't compare Jurek to Kouros. If you want to compare the two men on trails, Jurek won the Western States 100 6 times and Kouros came in 24th the only time he ran it. Kouros is primarily a road and track multiday specialist.
Conversely with Spartathlon... Scott Jurek was a few hours slower, the two times that he ran it. Also Scott himself dubs Kouros a heater athlete at his book
really great stuff!! thanks!
lol ... interviewer is happy ... i love it
Smart guy. Great philosophy on life.
The song was originally written by Pinback. Music reminds me that I like to run and stay active to have energy to play music. Not sure I'll ever do an ultra but 40 minutes is no biggie. Thanks!
beautiful and very interesting.
thank you :)
Those silk shorts are disturbing
GoodVibrators
I think so too
+GoodVibrators I have nightmares about them..
+GoodVibrators Yeah, they may LOOK disturbing, but I bet they FEEL nice and flowy
Yeah I get that :-)
Your name is disturbing
Remember Cahit Yeter R.I.P.
Not Scott's hair and get up kills me. Or was this shot in 1978?
+Mike Shomaker let's focus on the content, folks... ;)
How do you run barefoot without hurting your feet?!
forest gump
The Golden Greek ran 188 in 1 day.
The Golden Greek had the strongest mind in running history. People like him are born once every 500 years. Mozzart, Van Gogh, Yiannis Kouros. Such people are rare products of humanity.
Good runner but Yiannis Kouros ran 188 miles in one day.
meek. against arrogance. that is how one overcomes vices, with virtues. Did he beat the world record for the mile/two mile/ or even three mile? Can he do that in record time? A guy from morroco has the title for the mile and two mile i think. Can Jurek beat that? just a one mile pace? Because he sure runs a twenty four hour race at six/seven minute average. Therefore I wondered if he could actually take that record.
+Bradley Hauf we all have our areas of focus and specialities.
Scott openly admits he is not blessed with fast twitch muscles. What he is blessed with is the ability to carry on through the pain and through the moments 99% of others quit.
born in the same town as bob dylan
Is it just me or does Scott not look very lean for an ultra runner?
+Iroquois Pliskin i agree because he is getting a lot of carbs and carbs makes you chubby.
+Mir Shafiee Carbohydrates shouldn't make you fat if you are active.
every time i avoid carbs for few weeks, i lose weight. if i don't avoid them my weight is staying the same even with 70-80 miles/week. JUST SAYING! :)
Is this a joke
Yiannis Kouros
those shorts, nein.
Nietzsche would never encourage weirdos to be normal.
Terrible interviewer talking to a great runner.
+thersten shocked to see casually critical comments on youtube!
What were you expecting to hear? I enjoyed the conversational style of interview. Everyone is an expert nowadays.
him and the other anorexic guy who talk about "plant based" diets (the other guy calls it fruititarion) really get on my nerves. i respect their athleticism and dedication. but something about them just annoys me.
+jenny r
You are pretty fast and loose with the term "anorexic". Jurek is far from that and couldn't handle the endurance runs if he were anorexic. Something about your post annoys me. What have you accomplished as a runner?
+dematson I'm not interested in arguing with you..or listing my accomplishments as a runner. just wanted to voice my opinion. isn't that what "comments" is meant for?
+jenny r I'm far from anorexic...I'm 195 pounds and could probably stand to shed a few. ;)
