- The Source is a documentary film that explores elite ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter's source of will. How does the candy-loving, beer drinking athlete crush 200+ mile races, in some cases, beating all the men and the women?
The film gives viewers a front row seat as Courtney races the Tahoe 200 and lends insight.

Phew! I am 1 week away from my first marathon. Started training at 50 yrs age, BMI of 28, and took me 6 long months.
Have sacrificed sleep,, Entertainment, with lots of running across trails and parks.
Now, 6 months later, can't wait for it. Did 3 , 20 plus miles runs. BMI went down to 26 already.
Wish me luck 🤞
"I joke that he's just Kevin, but he's the whole thing, he's everything" 😭💛
She comes in after 103 miles and says “ morninnnn”. What a humble savage.
Wild... Ms. Dauwalter and Mr. Stanley were my middle school teachers and the cross country coaches. Ms. Dauwalter did an incredible job of fostering a true love for running and it's been incredible watching her grow since I left her classroom 5 years ago!
That’s dope
Oo😣
"She hates losing more than she likes to win". That's drive!
Seems to be the case with most people.
@@MCJOHNSON95 I guess most people just get mad that they lost and end it at that. Others never want to feel that way again.

Ending should have mentioned she still beat the course record by 7 or 8 hours . Winner
The second woman finished in a time of 72 hours 22 minutes. She beat her by almost a whole day. The course record for a woman was 68 hours before. Beat that by 18 hours. Insane.
Runs 205.5 miles, instantly cracks a cold one.
Also, third place came in at 60h so they were in a league of their own
Tahoe trails are 6300-near 9000 ft. Bone dry. Try running a 1/2 marathon there. Even if it's flat.........add say 3000 ft to that 1/2 marathon. Even on a mountain bike, this route would be brutal.

I love this message. For me, running WAS the addiction. It was my chosen pain, that replaced the pain of depression. Now, I run because that is my choice, not to escape, but to embrace :-)
amen brother. with you on that
@Kertigen1 imho, it took me 2-3 weeks of sustained and disciplined running for me to love it. I cant imagine my life without it now
That is so beautiful
How much i agree agree with this
Same, I don't listen to music either because it's important to be present when running and not distracted.
As someone who runs ultra marathons (nowhere at this level) you know the person who won this video for me, the support person at around 20 minutes who said (when Cortney was leaving the station) "have fun". That's what you need when you are in that spot. You need someone to remind you that you love this stuff and you are out here by choice and to have fun. It just changes your mindset!!
She looks like a fit average person, but she's a completely different animal. Them eyes shine like they're in a trance that is geared to run practically forever. No ego, no clout chaser, no diva, best representative of the sport one could hope for.
I found the whole crew inspirational. Their drive, support, and respect for each other is really refreshing and really very touching. Thanks for this gem of a documentary.
Anyone know what kind of pack she’s wearing? I’m sure it’s Salomon but any details would be killer. Thanks y’all.
Thank you! We're so glad you found it inspirational.
@@Banksydog I think its Active Skin or ADV Skin, not sure though

Me: Contemplates nightly weather brushing is worth the effort of getting out of bed

I'm here because of a short Joe Rogan interview I saw with Courtney. Her running achievements are ridiculous. You hear it. You read it. I watched it and I'm still dumbfounded by her greatness. She's unlocked a special pain thresh hold I don't understand. The best part, for me, is her humble, good nature. She could be a super next door neighbor or your kids teacher!
She was/is a teacher
Same, saw her on Rogan. What an inspiration!
I too on Joe Rogan
Saw this documentary and awe struck. Courtney is an inspiration 🙌 👏🏽
This is sooo inspiring to me. As a 56 almost 57 yr old trail runner looking to run my first ultra I take Courtney on my runs. When I hit my hardest and when I feel like quitting, I always tell my self: “You have the heart and soul, the mental strength, and the passion of Courtney! And I always pull through! She is the Michael Jordan and the Kobe of trail running!
“If this all goes away tomorrow ... we’ve had a ball!” Dad. Wow that’s good!
That's crazy at the 181.5 mile marker (aid station) she says "I don't know how much fight I have left in me." and "I'm in a weird, weird space right now." She then sees Kyle catch up to her then it does look like the camera cuts for a moment then I love how she has that look in her eyes (something clicked in her at 27:26) once she sets down the Gatorade and then she says "Kev are you ready?" Such inner drive and inspiration!
she said that after she seen kyle...
Her whole demeanor changed. She's an animal, in a good way of course. I'm amazed that she's out there beating the men. Very inspiring. And she does it with character and class.
Yep, exactly very inspirational wanting to beat everyone regardless of gender...she is special.
Haha I noted that too. "...I don't know if I can continue" *Kyle appears* "Ok let's do this." 😄
@Cheezbag, that was my favorite part too. She's an assassin.
I once watched RUclips for 50 hours straight.
zach olson Get out more 👍🏻😂
What’s the best thing you watched during that impressive performance
@@johndavis2284 what does the fox say music video
Nice job 👍🏻
Damn. I had to give up at 49:54:36. You got me by just over 5 minutes. Thought I had it!
Can't wait to be a dad like hers! Go Courtney! Your the type of hero I want my little girl to look up to!
Couldn't agree more.
I donno why I started crying. But the whole crew is so down to Earth and she is so smiley and appreciative of life yet here she is doing an unfathomable amount of miles and makes it look like nothing. And people who can achieve so much...I am just in awe...
And of course I also feel my own punity in the grand scheme of things as well.
Thank you for watching. There's a lot to be said for spreading positivity in this world. We all need more of it!
As a triathlon guy who has never been in first, I can't imagine how demotivated I'd feel to be out in front and then lose it. I think that her finishing sub 50 hours after losing that lead is a massive testament to her drive and dedication and fortitude. I think many other athletes would have called it after being in such a bad head space and then losing the lead. Many other athletes would have lost the drive to finish. She's an absolute beast.
Best part is that she runs in a baggy t-shirt and basketball shorts.
@Logan Stroganoff on rock climbing you don't need "goofy gear", because it's always dry and in nice weather, in alpinism though, without the gear, you are going in certain death
my kind of woman
Why is that the best part? The best part is she can run HUNDREDS OF MILES. HUNDREDS!
@@joker24280 Rock climbing is always in dry nice weather? Rofl
I don't get how the hell they don't ride up. I wear shorts that have a 8" inseam and they bunch all up
Awe inspiring. I love her grit. Her smile. Her humility. And the fact she brushes her teeth at aid stations. :)
puke mouth is no fun to run with
Crest should sponsor her
Minty cool breath always helps
@@hardleesoft5919 that makes sense now! Thank you for the explanation!
I’ve heard a number of ultramarathoners say that being able to brush your teeth on course is an amazing boost
Shes the polar opposite of david goggins yet doing the same races and just as inspiring.
How's she an opposite, do you mean how they cope with the intense pain?
courtney just likes to run, david hates it and does it for suffering
Typical military sh!t. Drama, ego..
Great observation! I’d say more inspiring for me. 👍
Bc Goggins, while a beast, is an arrogant dude. She's a humble beast and a kindred spirit.
Props to whomever did the camera work for this while running next to / behind Courtney.
I LITERALLY watch this before I run 4-6 times a week. Courtney has been the biggest inspiration to me, not just in regards to running, but for improving my attitude (cause it could always be better) and work ethic as well. We're all incredibly lucky that she's sharing a little bit of her life with all of us - we're all the better for it.
So cool Emerson. She definitely sets a powerful example of staying positive and pushing your limits. She inspires us too!

She's INCREDIBLE. Both as a runner and a human being. How can somebody so awesome remain so humble?!
Put in perspective this is like running a 7-8 marathons back to back. Incredible

This girl is amazingly inspiring. Dear god, her strength and resilience. She crushed the record. I started running again after taking a year off from running after a half marathon. I literally don’t have any excuse after watching this video. EXCELLENT COURTNEY!
She is Superhuman- physically, mentally, emotionally. All aspects come into play when you are pushing your capabilities like this. You lose one, the others compensate for a time. If you lose all of them, you stop. Courtney has found a way to rally one or two of these things to overcome being down in the other. Amazing.
I truly do not understand how a body can do this sort of thing. I would disintegrate I think. LOL
What is the difference between mentally and emotionally? How are you just making stuff up
Jack T Jeez. Mental: What’s my best strategy at this point? Emotional: I have so much joy that I can do this. Those are just examples of course, but perhaps you get the idea.
her husband said she did a 6:30 mile at the end of MOAB...:-o...thats..not..human..she is a delight to watch and there is a lesson for almost everybody in this piece...great work, and kudos to the team...real respect...
easy...this is impressive but lets be fair, no african runners do these events because there is no money in it. They stick to the big city marathons and the best marathon runners in the world can hold low FOUR minute miles for 26miles, *that* is inhuman. They would comfortably destroy Courtneys times. Nevertheless her spirit and dedication are inspiring.
you have a point, but its a completely different type of running and I am not sure the Africans, or pure track athletes like Rupp, would survive a 240 mile race with 30k ft of elevation gain. The African presence in track is more a matter of easy access than the money, because the competition in track is intense. But in terms of pure athletic effort, if you challenge both track and trail people to do both types of races, I would bet the combined results would favor the trail runners. Track is purely physiological, with some drug enhancing thrown in, perhaps. Training to survive 240 miles and do it in 57 hours is purely mental with a lot of technique thrown in. @@patrickharrison1913
@@bpetersson5024 the thing is the mindset of these african runners is very sturdy. They grew up with nothing, for them "going in the pain cave and being okay with it" is part of normal life. Remember, some of their parents even still hunted by running down animals. If there was enough money in it they would crush these races.
@@patrickharrison1913 well the one you forget is that they are training for a marathon. We don't know how fast Courtney could run a marathon if that's what she trained for. A 26.2 Mile road race is different from a 100 mile trail race

This woman is amazing so humble people do not understand how incredible her achievements are.
No drama, no need to make statements, simply a pure athlete and seems like a sweet person. There seems to be an awesome team around her. She appears to have an amazing relationship with her Dad. She interacts so well with everyone. Great documentary. I just learned about her through this documentary, ever since then I have tried to watch everything on her.
Her attitude inspires, her charisma, her humility and the power that she has to push through is superhuman. I’m a beginner runner and it really is people like her that help me put on my shoes and get outside, to do something incredible and to discover what my body can do. Thank you for this upload and thank you Cortney for all those hours and miles of dedication and inspiration.

JR projected that "demon" rhetoric on this Warrior, some individuals have slow burning embers in their heart and soul, this gal is truly amazing.
Hats off to all competitors at this level
Courtney is such an inspiration. Not only because of her physical and mental capabilities but I truly admire her spirit. Her authenticity and joyfulness is so refreshing to see in such an accomplished athlete. She's managed to transcend ego by practicing modesty and cool headedness. Courtney has demons.. but she chooses to control those demons and not let them control her. She is the epitome of what everyone should aspire to be: resilient, nonreactive, joyful, determined, and humble. And of course, her being is reinforced by such an incredible team :)
“I don’t think I can red-line it for another 30 miles!” What the $&@? Most people can’t fathom running 30 miles period. She’s talking about 30 miles after a freaking 170 miles! Crazy mind control and dedication.
It’s all about overcoming your own mind
I thought it was interesting because on the Joe Rogan podcast she talked about hallucinating seeing a leopard on a hammock. I love how the dude at 13:38 is wearing that same image. Crazy shit.

Thanks for being my run buddy today. I have loads of these endurance videos saved for my runs. They provide me the motivation and the company to keep going.
I've watched a bunch of these docs focusing on different runners and a common theme is the level of emotional investment and admiration from their teams who are often accomplished runners themselves. Says a lot about what it takes to do something like this on the top end.
"I'm in a weird space right now and I don't know if I can fight it anymore." - she said at mi 181

I'm extremely happy that this video already has 2.5 million views. That means more people are getting to know who Courtney is, and that trail running is getting bigger exposure.
One night I was pacing for a friend up in Alberta for his Iron Horse Ultra attempt. As a comparatively new runner I took note of the way my body felt after only having run a total of 55 kilometers. I thought about Courtney that night. I remembered the interview with Rogan, specifically the comment about eating nachos and cheese. Yeah...some nachos there Missy. Her attitude is inspiring, her ability to deal with discomfort will be something I'm reminded of for a long time yet as I progress.
