Charlie, you might want to go to an ENT if you've never seen one. The way your motion sickness started sounds alot like a vestibular abnormality. I've seen many cases just in my clinical rotations this far that described similar symptoms, and events leading up to what you described. Might be worth investigating. Often times they're easily solved, or manageable to the point that you rarely have side-effects or symptoms from the issue. Motion sickness is generally something that develops in your pre-pubescent stages, and generally does not change in severity or frequency over the course of adulthood.

Charlie go see an ENT, the same thing happens to me. There’s physical therapy for it This is not something untreatable, the roller coasters probably shifted the shit in your ears responsible for balance or something
I never realized I met you in person.... I was a kid at the time and I remember my very last time at Busch Gardens there was a man passed out on the pavement that my mom quickly rushed us by. Thanks for being part of my childhood memories
Reminds of this one time at like age 11 I somehow got lost in the haunted house at Enchanted Forest in Oregon and ended up panicking and throwing up in three different places before going back out the entrance. I passed this little girl and her mom who had just entered, who probably just saw this puke soaked child who was way too old to be scared of haunted houses emerge from the dark like a goddamn wendigo and say "I wouldn't go back there if I were you"
Dude I worked there over the summer and running the haunted house is the best thing in the fucking world except there is so much bodily fluid spilled in there every day
5:11 That second ride on a rough old wooden roller coaster may have been enough to damage your inner ear, the part responsible for bodily motion-balance and counter-balance. That would explain your nauseated motion sickness.
Dude this one time I went to bush gardens, and there was just this guy laying out in the concrete, just like sleeping or something. Figured he must needed the sleep so I left him alone, but man Florida is wild.
Everybody has them, but it more about how you talk about the story and how to make it funny. The story Charlie told is very short, but he adds on many things to it before like giving context and how Busch gardens is. It’s a matter of how the story is presented, not how many stories you have or how funny the story is
Sounds like the coaster screwed up your vestibular system. Mine has always been screwed up (it's an Autism thing) and have always had TERRIBLE motion sickness. As a baby I would constantly cry as soon as the car started moving, I could not (and still can't) go on any rides at ALL. Still to this day, I get super sick even on short car rides if I try to check a text, change a song grab something in a bag, etc (I can't drive yet, so not sure about that.) Some tips I got from my OT to help strengthen the vestibular system are doing things like trampolining, yoga, rolling on the floor, riding a scooter, and riding on a swing. Hope this helps for you or anyone else who suffers from motion sickness sees this. EDIT: grammar + spelling
I've only been to Busch Gardens once when I was like 10 but the moment Charlie mentioned the wooden roller coaster I cringed, after that one my whole family decided to leave because it left us all feeling wacky if you may say
@@czrlosfr Indeed, RMC (the company that made it) did a bang-up job with it. It's technically a retracking, not a new coaster, but it may as well be a new one as they basically had to bulldoze almost the entire top half of the ride and add new wood for it to be stable enough to handle the new track; Charlie really wasn't lying when he said it felt like it was about to collapse at any second. It's not even classified as a wooden roller coaster anymore, it's now a "hybrid" model (steel track with wooden support structure). It's also fast as balls, 1000x smoother, and it goes upside down in some places.

I honestly couldn't imagine leaving my friend to ride a roller coaster (or any activity that we are there to do together), even if he wasn't feeling sick. Kinda a douche move lol
Im not a fan of upside down roller coasters, but if my buddy wanted to ride it once and the lines aren’t too long, I wouldn’t mind. Otherwise, we aint splitting up.
exactly. Surprised charlie is still friends with andrew. If my friend that i trusted left me unconscious and was even annoyed that i felt sick- I would stay away from them immediately. A friend who doesn’t seem to care even a slight bit about my well being is not a good friend.
Hey a PT here! If you still have lasting symptoms check up with your doc and ask about positional vertigo! Could be a vestibular abnormality or BPPV (which is easy to fix believe it or not!) DEF worth a shot!
as someone who also suffers very bad motion sickness i highly recommend getting medication for it next time you need to travel, it really helps. especially the prescription patches if it's a long trip, that stuff works miracles
Some traveling medication I know is Gravol or dramamine for motion sickness and dizzy spells. I had to take thess chewable ginger Gravol in the past before I had my ears looked at since I kept feeling sick to my stomach at times when I was traveling
Charlie, I have severe motion sickness too and it's because of a condition I sustained after a concussion. I don't think you had one, since you didn't say you threw up afterwards, but I do think you have some sort of inner ear issue. I used to ski, ride crazy roller coasters, all that jazz before getting the concussion. I have a thing called unilateral hypofunction. It's definitely odd that you got such severe motion sickness and still have it after a certain explicit event. I can't force you to do anything, but I recommend seeing a doctor of some sort. For me, my condition wasn't treatable through any means except time and physical therapy. Best of luck! Edit: I want to add that the way my condition was diagnosed was getting a test called a VNG test. They put some weird goggles on you and make you sit up and down really fast to test the motion of your eyes, since the balance nerve effects your eyes. If you were sick for an extended period of time, felt more unsteady, for more nauseous than usual for an extended period of time (for me it was a couple months) before everything seemed to steady out, I would get it checked out. For me, my balance issues never went away because it can't heal. Your brain adapts instead. I get motion sick easier than most people after about two years since. Your story about feeling dizzy after certain things like playing basketball or skateboarding is very relatable... which isn't good. For me, turning my head to look over my shoulder causes a dizzy spell. Which ... while driving is not fun, but the more I do it the more my brain is able to adapt to it. I hope you figure out some answers!!
@@mohsentajik7876 Not necessarily. Sounds like you have tinnitus, which in most cases is due to damaging the fine hairs inside your ear canal from prolonged noise exposure i.e. listening to loud music for extended periods of time. There are some remedies you can try, some people wear hearing aids with a masking device if it's really bad, but there's not really any cure. If it just happens occasionally for a few seconds every so often and isn't too bothersome I would say you probably don't have to worry about it, but if it's constant and really bothering you there are some things you can try to lessen the symptoms.
Charlie you might be dealing with some post-concussion symptoms. Certain symptoms can be lifelong unfortunately. There are absolutely coasters outside there that whip your head around violently and can cause a concussion or injure the brain stem via whiplash. I got a couple concussions in high school and have been dealing with sensitivity to light ever since.
Yeah, that's something beyond the realm of motion sickness for it to be that onset. While that is something that can certainly develop over time not in an hour.
Oh yeah, I rode one of of those raggedy motherfuckers once, with the wood rails. It’s awful, I came off with a splitting headache and it ruined the rest of my day. Definitely without a doubt could be a concussion knowing those rollercoasters.
I'm a big roller coaster enthusiast. The second you said "Busch Gardens" and "Gwazi" I IMMEDIATELY knew where this was going. That thing made me sick and I've never had motion sickness in my life. Luckily they just overhauled it and I hear Iron Gwazi is awesome.
@@sash4028 it received very little guests so the part decided to have RMC, a roller coaster production company, build a steel retracking of the ride and change it’s layout. It definitely worked in their favor because Iron Gwazi is awesome !
Had a similar experience at Dollywood except it wasn’t motion sickness I got, I rode every roller coaster there (except for mystery mine which was down) and got the worst headache of my entire life. The headache was there but not too present and I was getting ready to ride a small family coaster called Dragonflier, I grayed out (which had never happened to me before) on this little ass family coaster! I got off feeling just like you described, but the difference between us is I still wanted more, I had another roller coaster I hadn’t ridden yet and I had to see it through, one which is ironically named Thunder Head. I got to the station and walked directly onto it and I mean there was no line at all I was destined to ride this! It was still a lot of fun, the adrenaline kinda canceled out the headache whilst I was on it, but when I got off I felt like the entire universe had just condensed onto my head. The walk back to the car was the longest excursion of my life, I rode this bumpy ass trolly instead of walking which in retrospect was an awful decision, damn near thought I accidentally stumbled back onto the roller coaster. Now every time I get a bad headache I’ll say to myself at least it ain’t as bad as the Dollywood headache
oh fuck i went to dollywood for a 7th grade field trip and the group of friends i was with, and i, all rode the tornado roller coaster (idk what its called and cant be bothered to google it) and thats the first time a ride had ever made me feel AWFUL like on the last loop i was actually about to vomit i was so glad it was over. and they all LOVED it and wanted to go again. i just stood in the exit waiting for them lol. ive learned over the course of riding a ton more coasters the only other time a ride has done this to me was space mountain, i think its the fact that it was in the dark but i had my whole body tensed to keep from puking the whole ride.
You are lucky you didnt ride mystery mine. That ride was the worst one i rode in dollywood. It has 90° turns at high speeds, and the carts are designed where there are two plastic or wooden planks on both sides of your head. Basically any time the ride turned at all you would bump your head against those things. Im surprised dollywood hasnt been sued for it. That ride alone is what gave me a headache, and nothing else did
I want to know if you ever were seen by a doctor and diagnosed with anything? I'm a lot older than you but I've had vertigo for years now and can't ride any rides. I used to love riding coasters but never went that crazy with it. Interesting anecdote.
Yeah, there's a lot of semi-permanent inner ear issues you can develop that can produce symptoms like that. I had a nasty ear infection 7 years ago and have had some degree of vertigo issues ever since. It took about 2 years for my brain to compensate to the point where the world didn't feel slightly tilted when I was just walking outside, but even now I still can't sleep while turned onto my left side or I will suddenly feel an acute falling sensation after a while. Fortunately that last issue is the only real nuisance that remains now.
I had a friend who had the calcium crystals inside the utricle of his ear get out of wack and he got super vertigo for a while. You might be able to fix it with a Canalith repositioning procedure (CRP) - I know he saw someone and they fixed it really easily. Super bizarre!
when i went to florida this last summer my friends were going to a park and they said that otw they saw a man that got hit by car while he was on his bike, so you're 100% right about seeing bodies on the streets of florida
The way your friend treated it was a bit sad tbf, you likely had some sort of whiplash/concussion or even inner ear damage? I have been on a wooden ride myself and they can be quite the work on your body.
Growing up, my dad would always be listening to 50s and 60s era classics. I hated it. I was convinced his oldies were making me car sick. It didn't occur to me until I was in my 30s that he was just a shitty driver.
That sounds like an inner ear disorder or something since it developed pretty far along in your run. Have you gone to a doctor about it? If not, you could probably get that diagnosed and maybe fixed
andrew seems like a good friend (present day), but i honestly cant agree with what he did. Like you dont just leave a friend that looks sick or half unconscious. Im not expecting andrew to use healing powers to save charlie or anything, but something couldve happened to him and he couldve at least be concerned or just stop the challenge. (Maybe charlie exaggerated the story or missed a few points but i dont really think hes the type of person to misrepresent a friend.) Hope andrew is doing well and being a better person though, no hate to him whatsoever.
Meh, I never liked Andrew that much. From the podcasts he has always come off as a narcissist and uses the podcast as his own soapbox to complain about almost everything.
@@StompigatesYT yes, cancel culture is toxic and unnecessary, but the fact that just about everyone is being all soft and empathetic toward this Andrew guy for literally being a Grade-A asshole and horrible friend is what's unacceptable. it's perpetuating a culture to the impressionable kids infesting this platform that acting like that is okay, when it's absolutely 100% not okay. but it is okay to get mad about it.
Bro probably got extremely concussed and fell asleep about it and no one checked on him. A friend and I went to Cedar Point and they got a concussion after The Mantis (which I warned about because that ride rocked my shit the last time I went (I also think it's called Rigamaroo now)) and that shit affected them for like a month. I can't imagine getting concussed early on and continuing to ride rides after that up until a wooden coaster that literally shakes you around so much
I can't belive we have to call people chads for being able to laugh at themselves in this day and age (charlie amongst that reason is a chad in general but come on)
So as someone who used to work gwazi as well as gwazi gliders for the children, that ride used to be absolutely terrible. Every morning we had the technician come out to give the “alright” that the ride was “operational” and that they didn’t have to replace any bolts that day. At the bottom of gwazi is what the staff called the “graveyard” where the bolts of the coaster would fall down from the ride and collect (or sunglasses/phones/crap people dropped). Millions and millions of screws and bolts on the ground. Worst part was having to ride the ride 3 times in the morning before letting people on, since it’s REQUIRED that staff is used before patrons. They have completely rebuilt gwazi now, but the damage I would hear people talking about after leaving is what ultimately made me leave the job. Busch is fantastic to visit as a patron, not so much as an employee though.
I too developed motion sickness from an amusement park. My friends and I went on "the strawberries", a ride where there are several circular rooms rotating around a single point like hands on a clock. In addition to this, these rooms were also spinning. You could control how fast they spun with this horizontal wheel in the middle, and my buddies span that shit so fast. I was all for it until it felt like my sense of time slowed down and I was struggling to ask them to stop spinning it. I got off and just sat on the asphalt. I'm a pretty self aware guy and would normally be too embarrassed to doze off in front of a bunch of strangers, but I was so unbelievable sick that I really just didn't care and I lied down until they got off. I felt like the type of person that parents would point at and warn their kids that they would end up like me if they did drugs, it was awful. Ever since then being a passenger in a car (especially riding back seat) or riding similar rides that involve spinning have made me sick.
sounds like you developed BPPV, happens when crystals in your ear get dislodged. physical trauma or infections cause it mostly and being rotated to fuck definitely passes as the former. easily curable with physical therapy (of all things), go see an ENT who advertises being good at that shit brah
The SECOND you brought up Busch Gardens, I KNEW this was going to have something to do with the Gwazi. I've been on that exact ride, and I swear to God, it was the single jerkiest roller coaster I've ever been on. Every movement feels like you're stuck inside a giant's Shake Weight. I'm honestly shocked that it hasn't led to any lawsuits.
You've gotta ride the remake "Iron Gwazi," it's completely redone and replaced with steel track and extremely smooth on ride, to the point of essentially being silent outside of all the wind, thankfully unlike old Gwazi! I used to torture my friends with that old version 🤣
people talk about how gwazi was so smooth and like,,, i remember riding it in late 2014 with my brother and it was so fucked that the whole time we were just making droning sounds to hear how much the bumpiness made our voices jitter. i havent watched the vid yet, i assumed this would be about montu, its the only one at the park that makes me grey out and gives me a killer head ache so i dont ride it anymore lmao
@@TechnologyWitch nah. they took it down. but gwazi was god tier. shit was literally terrifying. watching this video had me laughing my ass off because i knew EXACTLY what charlie was talking about. gwazi definitely not for everyone.
feeling worse and worse from something that's making you feel terrible and keep doing it is exactly one the things you do when you're really young and you have no clue how weak the human body really is and you feel invincible.
Good news: Gwazi has been completely transformed to a steel coaster now with a very smooth and intense layout. Gwazi was hated, but Iron Gwazi (the new name) is now loved
Hey Charlie, I know you're uneasy about flying and that's why you take 50 hour road trips, but as you said you get motion sick if you're the passenger and I understand that it's not the same when you're the driver! So to maybe get more comfortable with flying, you should learn to be a pilot yourself so you're in control!
There are little calcium crystals in your inner ear that help you keep balance. You might have whipped yourself around so much that your crystals are all outta wack and not where they should be. There’s is something called the epley maneuver that’s a way to reset your inner ear fluids and crystals. Ideally you’ll be cured of sensitive motion sickness, but you’re going to feel really sick from doing the maneuver.
So Charlie's body was ruined by a large quantity of wood? I've watched a few videos of the sort in the privacy of my room but this was a different experience
Btw idk if he mentioned this but that roller coaster was taken down a couple years ago but bush gardens is floridas hangout spot for every high school in here
Gwazi was the most bumpy ride in the park for a long time. It was borderline brutal. I honestly think I got a concussion from riding that coaster. I tried it out recently after they remodeled it and it's still pretty rough but better than it was. Last I saw it's supports are still made out of sketchy looking wood.
Do you mean Iron Gwazi, or when they swapped the trains in the early 2010s? Iron Gwazi is an extremely intense ride, but from my recent rides on the 7th, it's butter smooth. Only the supports are wood now (even then, some are steel) - and I can pretty much guarantee its safety and stability.
dude that is crazy. Your story mirrors mine EXACTLY from when I was 15 and went on the Mind Eraser at Six Flags New England (then Riverside). It completely and utterly messed me up, I had to lay down on a bench where I fell asleep while my mother and sister rode other rides for a while. Don't even know how long I was laid up there; I definitely fell asleep for a few. My mother has a picture of me on that bench somewhere... Worst part: when I went to sleep that night, I woke up at 4AM in agonizing pain, I couldn't stand or walk so I CRAWLED to my moms bedroom and woke her up. She took me to the ER to learn that my appendix had ruptured. From the coaster? Not sure. I may have already had appendicitis and the ride made it worst, but regardless, I have had completely incapacitating motion sickness ever since then. F.
Just passing along what another comment from a physician said in case it can help u: check yourself for a vestibular abnormality, more info in the comment from “the rickening”
Motion sickness is a pain in the ass. I can't even look at those dumb optical illusions with the "moving" shapes or I'm fucked up for a while. Same with getting onto a stepladder, having my wife make too fast of a turn in the car, or using an escalator.
Same thing happened to me when I got my gallbladder out. I can’t even play VR games :c the scrambler used to be my FAVORITE amusement park ride, and now I can’t go on any rides. I feel your pain my guy
Yeah that definitely sucks. I started having dizzy spells off and on a few years ago. I get them to where my head is spinning sometimes. It’s an awful feeling. Now I can look way up or down without getting dizzy
6:42 sounds like something in your vestibular system might have been damaged, either from pressure, or crystallization from G force. " If you or a loved one experiences sudden disorientation, you should seek medical care right away."
I just knew you were gonna mention Gwazi lol. I used to ride that all the time and loved it. Then, as I got older (and the ride got older) it got worse. Like Charlie said, the wood was so old, it felt like the ride was gonna fall apart lol. It would rattle so much and give me a major headache. Didn't ride it ever again. RIP Gwazi.
There was one time where a bad reaction to a prescribed medicine caused 2 months of severe migraines, and the first month I would get motion sick walking around the house. I can definitely empathize to suddenly getting motion sickness from things.
The view of Charlie trying to hold on to life in an amusement park while no one does absolutely nothing about is the most Floridan thing I could ever think.
The second I heard “Busch Gardens” I immediately knew which roller coaster fucked Charlie’s day. That same sketchy ass roller coaster is the one that completely put me off riding roller coasters for the rest of my life.
i'm SO glad i'm not the only one who developed terrible motion sickness as an adult. . . it made me feel so weak. i went to my doctor about it because it became so debilitating during work and driving and stuff. it made me feel so icky. . my doc prescribed me hydroxazine and it made my sickness minimal and more manageable. always trust your body and take care of yourself !!!
Same thing happened to me. Developed life long motion sickness from roller coasters as a kid. Can't do cars unless I'm driving, and a bus -- Lmao, I'm wishing for death within 3 minutes.
I’ve had this exact same problem from an early age. My earliest memory of motion sickness was from the tea cups ride at the local fare (UK). I was probably 6, maybe only 2 minutes later I was spewing my guts up😂

I passed this little girl and her mom who had just entered, who probably just saw this puke soaked child who was way too old to be scared of haunted houses emerge from the dark like a goddamn wendigo and say "I wouldn't go back there if I were you"
Aw you poor thing, but man that must be funny to look back on, love the way you described it LOL

Sounds like the coaster screwed up your vestibular system. Mine has always been screwed up (it's an Autism thing) and have always had TERRIBLE motion sickness. As a baby I would constantly cry as soon as the car started moving, I could not (and still can't) go on any rides at ALL. Still to this day, I get super sick even on short car rides if I try to check a text, change a song grab something in a bag, etc (I can't drive yet, so not sure about that.)
Some tips I got from my OT to help strengthen the vestibular system are doing things like trampolining, yoga, rolling on the floor, riding a scooter, and riding on a swing.
Hope this helps for you or anyone else who suffers from motion sickness sees this.

@@czrlosfr i rode it during previews. it’s so good
@@czrlosfr Indeed, RMC (the company that made it) did a bang-up job with it.

This is super important
I was gonna mention that it could be caused by an injury but this is so much more well phrased
is ear ringing have something to do with inner ear issue? though i dont have motion sickness.
@@mohsentajik7876 That sounds like it could be tinnitus? That's more to do with hearing issues though

Charlie you might be dealing with some post-concussion symptoms. Certain symptoms can be lifelong unfortunately. There are absolutely coasters outside there that whip your head around violently and can cause a concussion or injure the brain stem via whiplash. I got a couple concussions in high school and have been dealing with sensitivity to light ever since.
yeah that’s what I thought immediately was concussion
Yeah, that's something beyond the realm of motion sickness for it to be that onset. While that is something that can certainly develop over time not in an hour.
What about an inner ear injury. That can cause nausea.
Agreed. A neurologist or a physical therapist can do a pretty good screening and/or treatment.

Why was it overhauled? Just curious

I slept at the top of that net tower at the Busch Gardens playground for like an hour and my parents thought they lost me.
And iron gwazi is now a thing and it’s a world class coaster
