Don't feel too bad about it, Charlie. At college, I saw this kind of behavior several times. The best (or worst) was this one guy at my writing club who would always bring in the most generically "dark" pieces. Every scene he brought in involved a super generic male protagonist. They were different characters every time, but each one was essentially the same guy whose description coincidentally matched himself. The guy was always broody and mysterious and the scene would almost always include an incredibly attractive female that he would go out of his way to describe as overly attractive. She was always fall head over heels for the protagonist, who would always end up turning down her blatant advances because he had too many other important things going on. When asked to explain what the protagonist was going through he would always look away like to a wall or window or something and say "He can't escape. You can never escape." He would then turn around and try to over-analyze everyone else's work, getting really hung up over small details, trying to act like there was a deeper meaning to really trivial parts of a scene. This would usually go on for so long that it would end with the club leader having to interrupt him and saying that we should move on to the next part of the scene, something our club leader only ever had to do with this individual. I've had other encounters too, some of which were also for extended periods like this, but this was definitely the most memorable and interesting.

Don't feel too bad about it, Charlie. At college, I saw this kind of behavior several times. The best (or worst) was this one guy at my writing club who would always bring in the most generically "dark" pieces. Every scene he brought in involved a super generic male protagonist. They were different characters every time, but each one was essentially the same guy whose description coincidentally matched himself. The guy was always broody and mysterious and the scene would almost always include an incredibly attractive female that he would go out of his way to describe as overly attractive. She was always fall head over heels for the protagonist, who would always end up turning down her blatant advances because he had too many other important things going on. When asked to explain what the protagonist was going through he would always look away like to a wall or window or something and say "He can't escape. You can never escape." He would then turn around and try to over-analyze everyone else's work, getting really hung up over small details, trying to act like there was a deeper meaning to really trivial parts of a scene. This would usually go on for so long that it would end with the club leader having to interrupt him and saying that we should move on to the next part of the scene, something our club leader only ever had to do with this individual. I've had other encounters too, some of which were also for extended periods like this, but this was definitely the most memorable and interesting.
