Just wanted to let you know, that is an echinacea plant, with an infection called asters yellow. It is mostly spread by leaf hoppers, and the best way to control it is to cut off the diseased flower heads and dispose of them elsewhere. If all the flowers show it, it's best to dispose of the entire plant.

Flower looks maybe a green Zinnia. Batten down the hatches. Sounds like y’all are in for some serious rain tomorrow. I was stationed at Naval Hospital Beaufort, SC in 1981 - 1982. 1981 There was a hurricane that downgraded to a tropical storm not long before it made landfall. Had never seen rain and wind like that before… ever. We had a hurricane party on the ward I worked on, the Nurse corps officer in charge of the ward was from SC and she didn’t want us in the barracks or apartment in town by ourselves since none of us had been through one before and no one knew how much flooding and damage was coming either. Hospital was built like a fortress, had withstood many hurricanes and had generators so it was much safer for us all to be there anyway.

Ever heard of Fried Green Tomatoes? They are so yummy. Just slice up your green tomatoes, season them (salt & pepper) flour both sides & fry in lard or bacon grease (not deep) add cooking fat as needed. Once the flour is browned (on both sides) they are ready to eat. Some people do the egg bath & then flour, it's up to the cook! We always did them as a snack, because they are not good cold! Don't stack them the crust comes off easily!

    12 green bell peppers, ground
    4 c. ground cabbage

Grind vegetables using blender or coarse blade of grinder. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup salt. Let stand overnight. Rinse and drain. Combine with remaining ingredients. Heat to boiling. Simmer 3 minutes. Place in sterile jars and seal. About 8 pints.

I am with you, Ben. Weather is cool! I grew up in Arizona where we had two kinds of weather, sunny and hot and hot and sunny. With an occasional dust storm thrown in. I now live in Kentucky when we have four seasons and I really really love the season changes. Fall is my favorite. I even liked the ice storms. I was out with my camera taking pictures of everything encased in perfectly clear ice it was so beautiful. I know that Meg is probably too busy to watch RUclips videos, but I recently found a Italian cooking channel called pasta grammar. And she seems to have a 1000 uses for cherry tomatoes. Meg might pick up some good Italian recipes for all those cherry tomatoes.
Fried Green tomatoes with cheese grits and Tesso gravy is pretty awesome. There’s a restaurant on Strawberry Plains exit of I 40 on the edge of Knoxville Tennessee called Puleo’s Grill that makes that dish as an appetizer and I would love to have ordered three portions of it and just had nothing but that for my whole meal. It was that good. But the tesso gravy part is the difficulty because it’s made from a Louisiana Cajun style cured meat that I have not been able to find in any store around me in Kentucky. But it’s sure worth the search if I can find it.

I bought the yellow sticky sheets from Amazon for my greenhouse and plant room. I cut them in strips and I take the paper off one side at a time.
I put them in my window sills, next to the sink and anywhere I see those bugs flying. Worked well when flies come in to stay warm….
They are very sticky so place where your hair won’t touch them….lol…my husband got one stuck in his hair….😹
Put bleach in your sink traps because they breed in moisture.
When I buy fruit I wash in vinegar water because stands and stores have them and they lay their eggs everywhere.
I even find them in my fridge in the house and the camper.
We get tons of beetle bugs in the Spring and the Fall….the ones that look like ladybugs but bite…..so I put a narrow strip on the window by the lock and catch many a day……

Fruit fly trap - small container filled 3/4 full of water, dissolve 2 or 3 Tbl sugar and add a drizzle of dish soap. Sugar attracts them, soap makes it so they can't escape. It may take several traps if you have a lot of fruit flies and changing out the mixture repeatedly til the flies are gone. Diligence is key! Cooler weather will help diminish the population, too. Good luck!!

It's called a tarp button. At least, that's what they call it here in Australia. Also, you can make a tarp out of any large cloth with a mixture of 4 pints Naptha to 10oz simple silicone 1 (2 litres to 300g for metric people). Mix them together well in a large plastic sack, put the cloth into the sack till it's fully saturated, then squeeze out and hang to dry. No lasting smell, and the rain will bead off. For a really large one, you could make 4 pieces, stitch together with felled seams, then waterproof the seams.

Buggys legs are getting longer. She is growing. The trees are the reason why you have less pest pressure with your tomatoes. Your microbes are improving and fungi are colonizing the trees root systems. As the amount of fungi to bacteria ratio in your soil increases you will have less pest and disease because the fungi will help your plants to be healthier.

For fruit flies I use about 2- 3 inches of ACV in a jar with about 10 - 15 drops of dish soap...give it a stir. The flies are attracted to the ACV and they land in the jar and die. Just leave it on the counter of near your food where the flies congregate. I change mine every week when there is a lot of the flies around. Hope it helps. 👍😊

Whether you can take credit for that rock tying on the tarp or not, it is brillisant. Thank YOU for sharing it! I will definitely find that helpful in the future. That is such a clever way to not have to use the grommets or have to puncture holes (that will only tear) in the tarp itself.
The Ben "hacks" are brilliant. I think you should include as many of these as possible in all your videos, or do a "top 10 hacks" for building things, welding, gardening, composting, etc. You both are fountains of valuable information so it'd be neat to see some of the hacks that keep you going. If it is pssible for Meg to come up with some hacks she relies on/uses, we all know we'd love to hear them too.

For fruit flies set a mason jar with apple cider vinegar and a squirt of dish soap covered with wrap poked with holes. Works amazing!

Also if you like Joe you should catch Coalcracker bushcraft, if you don't already. Just took his basic bushcraft class this weekend and despite Ian downpour, was phenomenal.

Just wanted to give you an idea we would take banana boxes and the green tomatoes that were left at the end of the season we would wrap in newspaper individually and layer them in the banana box and put it in a cool dry place that we could get to and about every third day or so go through and unwrap and see which ones were red because they would slowly turn red Inside the Box rewrap the tomatoes. we would have tomatoes all winter

I am a weather geek! 🌧💨 I am just east of you all near Raleigh. I cleaned out my rain gauge! And I'm working from home tomorrow!
The tarp trick is pretty clever.
That ramen makes a beautiful meal!
Thanks for the time lapse. The atmosphere after a hurricane is the best!! Clean and clear - like it's been flushed!

Meg, you can put a small amount of apple cider vinegar in a glass and set it where fruit flies are a problem and they will fly into it and drown their hateful selves. I keep a small jelly jar of it on my sink this time of year.

My fruit fly battle. Ending up being drain flies. I Put couple drops of dish soap in all drains sinks , including toilet at night . Is were they breed , At night.
Bowl of couple pieces of fruit cover with plastic wrap leave a small side open just for a fly into the fruit once full I take outside to release them. Or can put dish & water in bottom of dish.

I keep old tarps. That's one huge tarp that would make smaller tarps for covering or lining other things. Allot of tarp going in the tip. I cover cement with half an old ripped tarp in the shed. Use another piece to help discharge loads of dirt and cover dirty loads from town.

Meg, you are a creative cook. That's so neat how you too a past favorite and turned it into a healthy favorite. Ben, I saw on Lumnah Acres that they bought re-purposed plastic billboard signs to cover their firewood. Heavy duty, black on backside.......but you don't get to pick which advertisement you want on the front side. Excited for you all to get your greenhouse. I will definitely enjoy watching you all using your new greenhouse.
