I was 14 in '73 and remember exactly where I was the first time I heard their first album. A WI kid, that southern rock spoke to my soul and just blew me away. They are, and have always been, my favorite band. I like to ask this hypothetical question of my friends: "You're on a deserted island and you can have the musical catalog of one artist to listen to. Who would it be?" My answer? Lynyrd Skynyrd. And there's a good reason I became a drummer at 18, too: Thank you Bob Burns & Artimus Pyle.
It's so honorable to hear Artimus Pyle giving Bob Burns his due consistently one and off camera. Thank you to both drummers, but it's true that "Bob" was a crucial ingredient part of LS early growth, vibe and success. There are so many other songs that aren't mentioned that Bob played on that are just phenominal, imo. What he says about RVZ is spot on. Godd stuff, thank you.
I met Artimus last summer and played with him at a benefit. What you say is true, whether on stage or just talking to a few people he was constantly self-effacing and praising other musicians and saying he was just along for the ride basically.
@@Cristofre That's great to know! I have a buddie that plays bass in VA and he said he ran into him a few times where the band was jamming and said the same thing you are saying. Talked with him and the whole nine yards. 🙂
Playing Artimus` and Bob`s drum parts was a real workout when I was in a working band playing several times per week for over a decade. I was usually singing too. Thanks guys! We miss you Bob!
Hey Joe... i think that sounds like a good name for a song... LOL .... JOE, Ive wondered about this for a long time. In 1985 I Believe belive, Toto came to Florence, Alabama to do a show. Ive read that TOTO'S tour manager noticed that the band was nervous. He had never seen the band nervous before a gig. but on this night, there were very important people in the audience. They were the muscle Shoals Rhythm section, better known as the Swampers. Ive always wondered if that was considered to be the passing of the musicians torch. I can imagen Jeff being a little antsy with the great Roger Hawkins in the second row and you have to think Hungate didn't want to screw up in front of little David Hood, and the GREAT guitarist Pete Carr drew the atention of Steve lukather and the musical genious of the Great Barry Beckett was right in front of David Paich! Was it just coincidintal that they came together at the same time? The legendary Swampers were aging and knew it was time to turn the page and did so that night in Flornce, Alabama. Does that look plausible to you?
Hi Ken…. I’ve found that these great players are probably more star struck than the average person because they know how good their peers are. All the guys you mentioned are my friends and I personally know how they feel about each other. Total respect. Steve Lukather is so respectful of the session guys before him. Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers is a huge fan of Hal Blaine and Roger Hawkins etc. When the Eagles played here in Nashville years ago Glenn Fry said we’re nervous tonight playing here in Nashville… we know who’s out there in the audience so I expect you’re right that the TOTO guys were well aware of the Swampers being in attendance….. best, Joe
The fact Artimus brings up Bob - and went out of his way to seek Bob out - & help Bob - that's special - a special bond - most people who replace or are replaced don't exactly gravitate towards one another - it's a testament to Artimus - Artimus has always given Bob credit - as he should - Artimus is my favorite drummer - his words on his 40th birthday - in Louisville ,Ky hit me with an almost mystical force - in 1989 Edit - PS - when anyone speaks of someone who is the "greatest" guitar player or "underratated" I bring up Steve Lukather - Dude is a phenomenal takent - and seems like a nice fella -
Terrific interview Joe! As a veteran myself, I would like to thank Artimus Pyle for his service. Looking forward to part 2 of this interview! Hope that you are doing well.......
Artimus was such a good guy.. They all were. Artimus was an emotional guy and misunderstood by some members in the band. He was a loving soul. They are together again in Heaven.. All misunderstandings cast aside. Love you guys! Wish I had been paying attention to you back in the 70’s.. I had no idea I’d Love you even more than the Allman Brothers. I missed out! Making up for it 45 years later by consuming all the SKYNYRD I can!! Heck Yeah!! And BTW… BEST interview I have seen of Artimus!! Thank you so much for doing it!!
Thank you Joe... Great interview. Artimus has so many great stories and he isnt shy about getting them out there. Sad that so few are left who can tell those stories...
Artimus is the definition of a "Class Act." Take away all the innuendo associated with Skynyrd and they remain near the top of American Rock and Roll Bands. What a special, special group of mega talented musicians.
Artimus! The blue drum kit he was playing last year in Austin,Texas was pure art. The band played a good, full show and the whole time I'm thinking... " Wow,OG Pyle is smoking that talented young drummer that was in that opening band, how old is he again?!". Salute JOE CHAMBERS!
I partied with Artemis Leon and Billy right after the plane crash just before Christmas we were down at Billy's house on the river well it was dark pitch dark and he couldn't find his way back when we were out in his boat they were great people ordinary good people I was actually a guest of Leon's helping him move into his new house Bald Eagle Road
Once again thank you Joe for all the hard work you do. I've been playing music myself for years this is one of the best informed channels I've seen. Thank you much
Another great interview. In the pic of Bob Burns, he looks a lot like Peter Green of early Fleetwood Mac. I loved it when Artimus said "I hate cigarettes" cos i used to say that too, even being an ex-smoker. I lost too many relatives and friends to it.
Love Artimus He will always be one of my Drummer Heros. he was and still is one of the greatest Drummers to ever keep the Beat and so much more. him and ronnie are my most faves, my heros. and all the Skynyrd Boys.
The forgotten Man! Duty to his Country and kept the beat going for RVZ! It's the Band of Birth of Southern Rock! Artimus The Lone Wolf! No ego just a real musician! Great interview with more to come! Thanks J.C. the? I have for Artimus the transition From Sgt Pyle to RVZ! Transformation of hitting the bricks to hitting the sticks!
Joe, I eagerly await parts 2 and 3. Not just because I love and appreciate Artimus but because this interview is actually more like a conversation between two humble gentlemen who have been in the trenches and respect one another. Well done...As Always! Be well friend.

I love Artimus Pyle. And I love that you interviewed him, Joe. Fantastic. All your interviews show insight, knowledge, kindness and respect, and you let them talk. Artimus has a sort of a loose cannon persona and I think some reporters could be a little frightened to interview him. Such great value with you and your channel and endeavors. I hope to spend a day at the museum some time. Please stay well.
Outstanding Joe. This gets real personal, not the kind of stuff you learn in a typical interview. The key to Skynyrd was their work ethic. Work ethic combined with talent is the winning ticket. Without Ronnie driving those guys, all the talent in the world wouldn't be enough. Artimus seems like such a nice guy.
Hi Blake… Thanks very much. It’s easy when having a great guest. Artimus was just as you see him on camera when we were not filming. Very sincere snd humble. Part two and three are extremely interesting. Hope you enjoy…. Best, Joe

Saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in San Diego, 1976. I was in the Navy. A friend from Arizona, saw me in the hallway of the barracks. He said "Gil do you want to go see LS tonight?" I said "Man I'm broke, I can't go." He handed me a ticket, said "I've got duty tonight." (Meaning he had to sit at a desk, walk through the barracks every 15 minutes, come back, sit down & write "Toured barracks, All secure.".) So I hitch hiked down to the Sports Arena (I think that's what they called it). The Outlaws (who I'd never heard of opened for them) they were great to be honest. Any way that's my story, saw them for free. Don't remember exactly when the plane crash was, but I saw them before that.
@blues in g music saw outlaws and LS on 7-4-76. ZZ Top had the misfortune to close the show! I went to see ZZ Top but nobody could have followed those two that day!

Artimus Pyle is one of the greatest drummers that's ever walked on stage and I was having to see a specialist in Nashville and Artimus had his own gig going on and I never did get to go see him but I still have nothing but Respect for him even though things still aren't good between him and the others . And ill never forget watching him talk about blowing the Rolling Stones off the stage and that was when the Stones supposed to play after them but I think they were pretty upset because Skynyrd brought the house down.
I totally agree about artimus's drumming, all one would have to do is listen to " gimme back my bullets" which in my honest opinion is one of their best albums where they actually got " heavy " and the style of song writing was a lot different from the others! I love Skynyrd!
I loved this interview. I grew up playing drums to Skynyrd in the '70's. As usual, learned a lot I didn't know, especially about Bob Burns. I do know Artimus is a hero, though, for what he did in the aftermath of the crash. Can't wait for parts 2 and 3.
Lyn Skyn was one of the first three albums I bought, 40 years ago, on cassette. One More from the Road. It was a revelation. The other two were Billy Joel, The Stranger, and Styx, Paradise Theater.
I think it was really awesome that he spoke about Robert Nix and what a great talent he was. There is so little information out there about him, and the Atlanta Rhythm Section as well. He got it right when he referred to them as the Wrecking Crew of Atlanta.
I love this channel and this bit. Anytime i pick up a guitar, some Skynyrd is there (covered Simple Man and Gimme Three Steps on a gig or two).. Gotta jump in at 9:15 or so.... I see LS between The CDB and Marshall Tucker at Winterland. Of course, Skynyrd stole the show. Great bit i'll never forget was I Ain't The One and Ronnie is just walking around Allen during his Kick Ass solo and at the 'break' grabs the Firebirds neck while Allen picks the strings. Insane. It was perfect ! Yes, Ronnie could play.
Cool interview Joe. I wish they would have never let him go. Much like Danny from Chicago. Looking forward to the rest. I will be at the Hall Tuesday morning. Thanks Joe. 👍🏻😎
I've been listening to the L.S.B since my MARINE CORPS days. SUSPOSEDLY Artemis lives here in western North Carolina. But i have yet to see one of his shows. Great Video THANKS.
I dont think a days gone by , i have 1 cd in my truck and its LS and it will be there for a longtime ,Great Drummer Great band,R.I.P to all The great musicians we lost that day in 77.
i got to hang out with Artimus. in pooler ga. with the southern rock all stars. End up being his tech that night... Oglethorpe speedway.. very cool guy ....
An interesting individual and a musician with much passion for what he does,it goes without saying. Artimus can really 'paint a picture' of another musician he is talking about. Another musician ,I have seen ,,didn't have a clue what his name was, until seeing this interview & what a kind hearted person he is,and I don't know Artimus from Adam. . Thank You Joe for this interview with Artimus Pyle.
So much to say about this...it's too bad the crash happened when it did, Skynyrd was on the verge of super stardom. The thing of it was they are arguably THE greatest rock band of all time....there was not one dud song they did, even the Beatles cannot say that...the influence thay had was enormous. Every single member they had was top notch and they couldn't have been tighter...Artemis should definitely be in the MHoF, no question....would love to have dinner with that man...Skynyrd deserves wayyy more respect than they get....
Allow me to praise Artie. Artie is an amazing drummer. Bob didn’t have a chance to perfect his craft with Skynyrd, Artie did. He and Leon drove the Skynyrd bus. Gary, Allen, Ed and Steve all tantalized us. Ronnie flew the Skynyrd bird, and never forget the Honkettes. Artie is in my top 5. Peart, Brewer (Grand Funk), Artie, Spires (Blackfoot), Bonham. Not saying those 5 are the best ever, but they’re my top 5, in no given order aside from Peart at number one.
Artimus seems like a great guy, he always speaks great things about the guys in the band, but I never understood the rift between him & Gary, nor the one between Gary & Allen. Was the rift with Artimus about 2 different documentaries? Thanks for any help. I’m a woman from the Midwest who’s always loved Southern rock music since I was a kid 🙂
I was 14 in '73 and remember exactly where I was the first time I heard their first album. A WI kid, that southern rock spoke to my soul and just blew me away. i got to hang out with Artimus. in pooler ga. with the southern rock all stars. End up being his tech that night... Oglethorpe speedway.. very cool guy ....
It was Ronnie whistling on some of the Molly Hatchet songs.
Love you Artemis.For 45 yrs
Can listen to Artimus talk all night looking forward to part two and three!
Really enjoyed this interview 👍
Artimus your a great drummer and great to learn from on drums ✌️
Great interview
An interesting individual and a musician with much passion for what he does,it goes without saying. Artimus can really 'paint a picture' of another musician he is talking about. Another musician ,I have seen ,,didn't have a clue what his name was, until seeing this interview & what a kind hearted person he is,and I don't know Artimus from Adam. . Thank You Joe for this interview with Artimus Pyle.
Artimus is one cool mother! Good on you man! What a legend
Another great interview!
I highly recommend checking out Artie's band.....they play Skynyrd music better than the current Skynyrd.
Artimus Pyle, modest and unpretentious, wanting to talk about and praise everyone except himself.
Amen Brother
Artimus seems like a great guy, he always speaks great things about the guys in the band, but I never understood the rift between him & Gary, nor the one between Gary & Allen. Was the rift with Artimus about 2 different documentaries? Thanks for any help. I’m a woman from the Midwest who’s always loved Southern rock music since I was a kid 🙂
Amazing guy, I can see why life has been so good to him. He doesn’t see himself as being great, he just thinks his life is great, and it is.
Anything LYNYRD SKYNYRD and a Marine drummer, I’m watchin’! 👍😊
100% Pure Honesty ❤️
