But which of the 3 immortal space-time witches that work as waitresses at *every* waffle house is your favorite?
The 40-ish, rail thin trailer lady who looks like a Walter White fan, has too much energy, to the point of annoying you, but delivers polite, no-nonsense service?
Maybe the eternal teenager who is sooooo over your sh*t, and is a smartass?
My favorite is the heavy black lady who is sunshine incarnate. You just need a spoon less sugar in the coffee that she keeps refilling after every few sips, keeping you constantly adjusting creamer and sugar.

My first full-time job was at a Waffle House (and we were next door to a couple of truck stops, so we got all the truckers in!) I never worked the late-night drunks shift, but I would do the afternoon one. And I still love the food there. It's nothing fancy, but it's simple, solid, and really, really good. Every so often, I'll just start craving a Texas cheesesteak sandwich and hashbrowns, or one of their chicken sandwiches. It's good stuff.

WH has been a lifesaver for my family, I was a full time caregiver for my mom and another family member before that along with my own medical stuff, the number of times mom especially had to go to the ER through her life made it feel like a second home to me. Obviously, when you go to the hospital, you never know how long you will be in ER, especially when a serious heart issue, finally going home in the middle of the night starving and having Waffle House at the end of my street reliably open meant so much. That's why I said drunks and alcoholics weren't the only ones going there, or that it was only good if you were tipsy. We all know that's not true, we all have our own reasons why we love it and have memories but I didn't want the wrong message to be taken by our friends from across the pond. Also to travelers driving through the night and having one at most highway exits is so handy.

In the South, there is the Waffle House Index. It is used to measure the severity of a hurricane. Since this restaurant always remains open, it has given rise to an informal but useful metric to determine the severity of a storm. The index is based on Waffle House's reputation for having good disaster preparedness and staying open during extreme weather or reopening quickly afterwards.
If you get there and the Waffle House is closed? That's really bad...
    Levels
The index has three levels, based on the extent of operations and service at the restaurant following a storm:
GREEN: full menu - Restaurant has power and damage is minimal or absent.
YELLOW: limited menu - Power is either absent or delivered by a generator, or food supplies are running low.
RED: the restaurant is closed - Indicates severe damage or severe flooding; Severe destruction to the restaurant.

    • @angiriberdy5094
      @angiriberdy5094 10 месяцев назад +2

And the metric is so good at determining the intensity of storms and their damage that it's unofficially used by some agencies to predict response measures. FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) has been known to use it as part of their response readiness calculations. It's that good.

Most of diner food originated from the simple cooking from the Great Depression, where diners originated, feeding people en mass, cheaply. It became simple, affordable, comfort food, and with better times came better ingredients, more care, and somewhat standardized expectations across the country.
Chicken fried steak, chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, hamburgers, corndogs, lots of American staples all can trace their origins to poverty foods.
    And they're gooood!

Grits is a porridge made from ground up hominy. What is hominy? Hominy is a white kerneled field corn. Regular corn that we eat separately is of course Sweet Corn. I personally don't like grits. I'm 50 and I bet I've onky tried 2 or 3 times in my life, and I just can't get into them. Some people put syrup in them, others do cheese, butter, and even shrimp, but I just don't get it,

I've lived all over the U.S. and each region and state has at least 1 good dish I like. The South has multiple things I'll eat abd love but still has some you couldn't pay me to eat. I despise grits (don't like oatmeal or malt o meal either). I don't like crawfish or really spicy food either.
Butter and corn syrup on my waffles. Maybe some powdered sugar. I don't care for maple syrup.
After we went out drinking we used to stop at a local place called the Hot Biscuit that was similar to Waffle House, IHOP and Denny's. They had a breakfast buffet that they put out for customers coming from the bars and clubs. I usually didn't eat the buffet because they had cubed breakfast potatoes and I prefer hash browns. Always the same order though. Biscuits and gravy with a side of hash browns and a side of crispy bacon. If I ate the buffet for some reason then I just ate the breakfast potatoes instead of hash browns.

Different parts of the country are better at different things. The coast lines tend to have more options for international foods, better sea food, and lots of fusions. The flat parts of america and the center parts tend to have a lot cattle farms so there is a ton of quality beef. Closer to you get to the southern border the better the mexican food. Its very varied. There are also smaller pockets of different cultures everywhere as well. Also the super thick waffles youre thinking of are known as "belgium waffles" and while they are popular, so are thiner waffles. They cook faster and are less filling so you can swap them out for pancakes if you order a breakfast plate. All these plates of food they are ordering probably cost like 6-8 dollars each.

Everyone knows as long as Waffle House is open, the emergency (tornado, ice storm, hurricane) isn’t that bad. Waffle House is reliable comfort food that gets progressively better the later it is and the drunker you are. It is a restaurant definitely more likely to be found in the South, but they are branching out into the northern Midwest. I think Ohio is just an honorary Southern state. The South has the best food, I think personally, but we also have the most people with diabetes, so it’s probably not the healthiest food. 😂

Waffle House is way better than Denny's. The appetizer is a good example of a custom order. Dude you have no idea, just go. Nights are the best, a meal and dinner theater. The south and midwest has bomb stick to your ribs breakfast. Denny's and IHOP are crap. Make sure you tip at Waffle House the pay is crap.

11FEB24: Those thick wafflrs are called Belgium waffles here i the States. Nest with butter and maple syrup in my opinion.
More Southrtn classics: Chicken and waffles, fried Okra, Shrinp and grits.
Apple butter: imagine apple sauxe with extra everything cooked down until it is spreadable.
If you have ever had polenta, that is just grits cooked ina different manner.

How do you get that age with a food channel and not ever have thought to put cheese in scrambled eggs? And, the other add ins, ie: pieces of ham, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, scallions, onions, tomatoes, hash browns, diced potatoes, etc.
I wonder if they pour baked beans over scrambled eggs or if they mix a bit into the eggs while they are scrambling them? Or, if they would think that was weird?

I live 2 miles from a Waffle House. Always a good choice to go to. 17:39 You'll get a good sample of Southern comfort food. Especially breakfast. I think you were talking about what we in the U.S. call "Belgian Waffles". They are very thick & very good, but they are not served at the Waffle House.

I love waffle house and go at least once a month. Ive been there at many different hours of the day. But after the bars close is when its the most interesting. I do like their grits, with extra butter, little salt and pepper, some sugar ... awesome 👌. I usually get 3 eggs over light, double hashbrowns with onion and sausage gravey on top. Bacon, grits and occasionally a waffle. If you go to waffle house and never been you can order hashbrowns with their own lingo smothered (with onions), covered ( with cheese) chunked (with smoked ham) diced (tomatoes) peppered (jalapeño peppers) capped (with mushrooms) topped (with chilli) and country (with sausage country gravey.

I can't speak for ppl from the south, I'm a Midwestern guy ..waffle House is the type of place you go to and eat like this when yes your drunk or hungover!
Other times vast majority may do breakfast there on a weekend once a month or every other month
Sure every location will have regulars that may actually hang out there for a couple hours in the morning and more so drink coffee, read the news paper or chat with others...these ppl likely retired and just like some company. Or a certain server was very kind to them!

I don't think there is one specific region with the "best" food. The South is probably the best argument for being "the best", I think in large part because of the variety of foods and prevalent use of local ingredients.
Anyone visiting the US specifically to explore the food, being limited to one region, without a bias towards certain dishes or flavors, will probably be very happy choosing the South.
You can go all over the US and find amazing food though, with influences from all over the world resulting in a huge variety around the country.

The tradition of eating fried chicken and waffles comes out of New Orleans. Musicians who played the last show were too late for dinner and too early for breakfast, so at the close of their shift they would be served fresh cooked waffles with leftover fried chicken.
The white gravy you're seeing is actually sausage gravy. (It's delicious.) We have Waffle House in Northern California.
Honestly, the food is pretty good anywhere in the US. My preferences are southern and western (which is much more oriented to beef instead of pork.)
I've only recently started eating grits. Probably one of the oldest foods in the Western Hemisphere. I like them!

Waffle House is good anytime. It is the place to go after a night out drinking BUT it’s great for breakfast or lunch. They never close. It’s good anytime. I guess it is a diner. Never thought of it that way. It’s not a good representation of “southern” food. It’s just good diner food.

Waffle House is all over the US but its concentrated in the Southeast. The first Waffle House was in an Atlanta suburb not far from me.
Grits is a porridge made from corn. It's best with just butter salt and pepper for breakfast and maybe with some sausage gravy or red-eye gravy from another dish on your plate.

The best way I can put it is that sothern cuisine is very comforting, its delicious and it feels like you're getting a hug from your mom. In the northeast we have the same but its more of a melting pot, like NYC where im from we have a lot of caribbean diaspora so theres a lot of Jamaican, Trinidadian, Haitian, Dominican, and Puertorican cuisine. But we also have a lot of Asian restaurants and Mexican restaurants but not as good as the west coast from what I hear many people say, its still good though. Theres also very high end restaurants which serve Italian and French cuisine, and of course you cannot mention the Italian and Jewish delis we have in the city which are and institutionof the city alongside the many pizza shops that have been run by generationsof families. The West Coast has a lot of Asian and Mexican restaurants which is the best in the countrybfrom what i have heard, theres also Californian cuisine, which is very much farm to table and focuses a lot on their rich farmland and vineyards they have out there. And the midwest is a lot of meat and potatos and very hearty cuisine which is very much influence by the many Scandinavia immigrants and eastern European immigrants that moved there. Thats just a bit of what I know, I'm sure you have many that will tell you many more characteristics of their foods in their regions. That's what makes America so good, depending on the region or even city, you can find so many different types of cuisines and customs that are inherent to those places. Cheers from NYC my friend keep up the good videos 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I love Waffle House. It's mostly in the southern parts of the US. I live in the northern part of the Midwest, and the closest one to me is about a 6hr drive 2 states over. I only get it when I go visit my family in Georgia. We go for breakfast. I'll always order the all star plate with a light waffle and grits. So good! 😅

Stick with the brown gravy, I’ve never been a fan of white gravy/sausage gravy. I can’t eat anything that looks and tastes like vomit. And the only grits worth eating are high quality grits made by somebody who knows how to make them. Never ever get the grits from a box, those are cheap and gross.

You can't look for which region has the best food really. Some foods are universal and the Waffle House isn't just the only ones doing it. We have an all night diner here that does just as well, if not better. But Waffle House has spread further north. Other regions have different foods. Having lived in the south, raised by southern parents who traveled the world, food everywhere has it's moments to shine.
