A lot of the south (especially Appalachia) was settled by Scots and Irish. So I'm not surprised you're seeing cultural similarities to Scotland. Love your videos. Keep 'em up. The Coke thing is mainly because Coke is based in Atlanta, Georgia.
As someone that lived in Japan for 7 years and loved being able to keep to myself, it was a bit of a culture shock coming back home to visit (and I’m not even from the south I’m in Colorado). I haven’t been to the south in… 20+ years but even though I’m very shy there’s just something different about Southern hospitality that made me feel welcome even as an anxious child who was usually afraid of everyone.
Hi from North Carolina. If you decide to come over to visit I would suggest the Biltmore Mansion (maybe for Christmas with all the Christmas lights and trees set up) or visiting the mountains during fall… all the trees with the reds, yellows, and oranges in color are breathtaking!
It's mostly accurate. A bit generalized but still mostly true. We have crawfish boils all the time. I don't care for it myself. I prefer shrimp or crab. Everyone else on the family loves it. Don't worry you *can* order unsweet tea or tea that's 1/2 sweet and 1\2 unsweet. I do it all the time here in Texas.
I am a southerner. I think your accent is so great to listen to. You probably could not understand me. This guy is just trying to be fun/funny. You would be just fine. People will love talking with you,bro
Mert, If you prefer a vinegar based sauce try north Carolina type BBQ Eastern is whole hog BBQ with a vinegar based sauce, Western north Carolina is a ketchup and vinegar based sauce on something like pork shoulder, cooked with mainly hickory wood.
He described the deep south and coastal regions, which are rich in culture and beauty. They developed around farm and plantation industries. I suggest you look up the history of each place before you go. But also consider Appalachian mts-TN, VA, NC, foothills of SC and GA. Scotts and Irish settled here and the rural area kept many traditions. I live in the Great Smokey Mts. National Park in NC- unique Music, food, history and beauty (especially autumn). 3 hours from Atlanta, worth it! Its the most visited national park in the US.
You should go to Savannah, GA. It’s a great place to go and never had a bad experience there and have been many times. Had multiple bad experiences when I went to the Outer Banks, NC. No trouble in the rest of NC so don’t get confused. NC is a great place to visit too..especially the Blue Ridge Mountains/Smokies. Btw, NC has two different types of bbq. Dukes Mayo is good but JFG is better.
Yes, I make crawfish boils and have bought crab bushels for boils. We have a special seasoning blend you can by at the grocery store, by different brands. The jar is huge, and depending on how much you are cooking, you pour cups and cups of it into the water. We usually have crawfish or shrimp boil with mini red potatoes and corn.
Yes, there are different personalities in different parts of tbe US. We have lots of things in common but when you travel you see and hear the uniqueness. ❤
I've lived in the South all my life and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Most if my traveling has been up to NYC and DC. I found New York to be as friendly as Southerners. I think Charleston, SC may be the most interesting place to start a visit. It's so beautiful.
I agree. I moved to Long Island NY and people weren’t like people made you think. I worked with good people. I had a co- worker from NY that said she was so tired of people in other states thinking that all NY’ers were rude. Yeah,It’s really not true.
I am from Sonoma County California (Northern California) I wouldn't live anywhere else. I was in the military for 5.5 years, soo Ive been around. We have everything here. Fresh produce, grown here, Wine, hundreds of dairy ranches, beef ranches, chicken ranches, and right on the Pacific coast, sooo fresh fish. There are only a few largish towns (2) 50,000 or less people. There are smaller towns though.
The stuff they dumped on the table is called a low country boil. It’s so good! Usually has shrimp, small corn on the cob, crab and potatoes but people put different things in it depending on where they are from and what they like. When I was in college in Savannah a friend and I used to go out early to the channels coming off the Atlantic and catch fresh shrimp and crab in drop nets. It was fun unless dolphins were around because they were trying to catch and eat the same thing you were netting for!
If you wish to see both nature and history on a southern road trip for around a week, I suggest flying into Washington D.C. and visit the Mall, especially the Air and Space Museum and the Monuments. Then in a rented car, drive west to the Blue Ridge Parkway and drive south to Asheville. A side trip west to the Smokey Mountains if you need to see more trees, or drive east on I-40 to Raleigh, and further east to Knobs Head and further east to the outer banks and Kitty Hawk. From Kitty Hawk drive north to Norfolk and take I-64 across the Hampton Roads Tunnel, you might get a great view of the largest navy base in the world. Continue north on I -64 to Williamsburg, and the Yorktown battlefield where America won the Independence War. Then you have the choice of amusement parks to visit, Busch Gardens in Williamsburg or King’s Dominion north of Richmond. Then north to Washington D.C. to catch your flight home. Warning, that’s around three to four days of driving, but your only extended stay for an entire day in DC and Williamsburg. This road trip takes you through both Virginia and North Carolina, lots of history and lots of scenery.
I'm from the Midwest, in Missouri, and when I was a child I do remember being scolded by strangers when I would start whining about something or being too loud. It always snapped me right into good behavior 😅
As a lifelong Texan, I can guarantee a hilariously-surreal experience lined with regular pit barbecue stops and burger joints in my home state-each location is often vastly different from the last. A famous example around here in my home town is ‘Grumps,’ a homestyle burger joint with a back porch/your dad’s garage aesthetic-plastic tables, wooden chairs, giant buckets of in-shell peanuts on the table… The burgers are to die for; my favorite comes with barbecue sauce, crispy strips of bacon, and a whole deep-fried onion ring on it, _and_ there’s an option to get it on a jalapeño cheddar bun. Prepare to gain weight.
You can make a great historical, architectural, music and food tour very easily by going from Colonial Savannah...to Antebellum/Victorian Macon...and to the Modern South in Atlanta...all without leaving Georgia and very easy to get to each.
I have so many Scottish and Scots Irish ancestors that have been in the Deep South for over 300 years. According to Ancestry and 23 and me i am 50% Scottish. Born in Alabama and raised in Georgia. Southerners have a saying, “ Born in America. Southern by the grace of God”.
I've never been to a BBQ joint myself, but the one place I hear people mention over & over is Terry Black's in Texas; they have just about every meat that can be smoked, including a beef rib they call the "dinosaur rib" (it's HUGE). In my opinion, if you want to visit the south in winter but you're not sure where to go, go to Louisiana; winters rarely get frigid there (it's actually so tropical that people plant banana trees in their gardens just for the look).
I'm not sure why Terry Black's became the place everyone does reactions to. I'm guessing someone came from Europe that had never had BBQ before and found out how good it was. Wherever they would have picked to try would have blown their mind and made them give a great reaction. Others saw the video and assumed that meant Terry Black's was what was so good when it was really just the first time having BBQ. It's a great place with great BBQ but theres a lot of better places all over the south. There's starting to be different places getting reaction videos now with people doing multiple places and they all pick other places over Terry Blacks.
Asheville, North Carolina (Blue Ridge Parkway, Biltmore, Estate); Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia and if you have time to go that far, New Orleans, Louisiana.
There’s nothing wrong with sauce, and you want it on certain barbecued items. Like, it’s usually mixed into pulled/shredded pork. But there’s a school of thought and eating habit that a lot of people follow, like me, that sauce detracts from the pure flavor of the meat, overpowering it. I mean yeah, it will taste great with sauce, but you’re mostly tasting the SAUCE.
I grew up in a time when the neighbor was just as likely to scold you as a parent and that was up North, so to me it's just always been a thing. Do that in the North now and people get unhinged. If you want to learn how to breath under water come to the south in July and August, the humidity will give you a lesson in breathing water.
My buddy came down to Florida from New Jersey to go camping, he used the Spanish moss to wipe his ass........oh boy, his nether region was infested with chiggers 😂😂😂
I’m from Pittsburgh,Pa. I think the manners thing is cultural. I’m AA and we were raised to do all of those things. Some people use manners and some don’t. I’ve lived in the south and not everyone has the best manners it’s subjective.
South Georgia in the summer is truly almost unbearable! Some place like Savannah is still hot as hell (literally) with 100% humidity but it helps a little that it’s on the coast and has a sea breeze. In the interior of South Georgia where I actually grew up we didn’t have that so a typical summer day would be 100°+ with 100% humidity. People who aren’t from there don’t understand why we stress the humidity part but imagine taking a shower then walking outside and in 5 minutes you’re soaked again and feel like you were back in the shower! Not kidding
I always say visit Florida first. Best beaches orher than Hawaii and southern culture all in one, just dont come in the summer because people that arent used to the heat AND humidity struggle handling it. That said, every state in the south has their own style of souther hospitality, culture and cuisine with certain traits they all share. I personally love Savannah Georgia, North and South Carolina and Louisiana. Theres tons to enjoy and discover all over the south, theres no wrong option. Id recommended visiting all of them.
Southern cooking is great but often heavy. There’s a joke that the reason why the south lost the war is because they ate their own cooking. Virginian speaking.
Where he is at is one of the original 13 colonies of America. Thats why we have so many hiatorical buildings snd places. I actually happen to live about an hour and a half away from the oldest remaining city in America, St Augustine. You can't drive on the roads there because they're the original roads made of rocks and sea shells.
The South is sort of the opposite of California. The people are awesome but the weather (especially the humidity) sucks. California has great weather and scenic beauty but the people are various kinds of crazy.
Yes I was walking on the beach a child was about to pick up a jellyfish tha had washed up on the beach his parent finally showed up and confronted me about talking to his child I told him to KYA
All in all everyone in every state are friendly. The south probably does the Ma'am and Sir more so...but yes, people will give the older people their seat, or a pregnant woman their seat...we have jerks in the US but on a whole we are all very friendly and will strike up a conversation...etc..
Dukes is creamy and tastes great. Miracle Whip is disgusting processed garbage. If you like the taste off of the bottom of your shoe then Miracle Whip is for you.
I know I'm late to the party but the reason why were similar here in the South and in Scotland and Ireland is because most of your Scottish Irish immigrants settled in the south
Mert where are you from? It seems odd to hear you say some of these things as if you’ve never experienced them. Them getting your card should’ve been done if it was doable. Respecting your elders was something you only seen in the south is crazy. lol Yeah,Where are you from?!
Crawfish is definitely an acquired taste I get picked on by my family for not liking them but in a crawfish boil there’s potatoes, corn on the cob, crab, sausage, shrimp, onions etc. but it’s spicy for those who aren’t used to it but I really enjoy the potatoes and corn soaks up all those spices and is very flavorful. But crawfish boil tastes the best from homemade ones. Restaurant normally just don’t taste the same.

Never letting the elderly stand is a custom all over America.

I highly recommend Charleston, SC. Great food, great weather (not summer, way too hot and humid), and rich history. Lots to see and do there.
HA! Football match! Thanks for reminding me of my mother, she was an Irish immigrant, called my football games matches like it was Euro footie.
Hi Mert, I hope if you visit the USA you and your family has a wonderful time, i know for sure if you go south the food will be fantastic😊
good video im from the south florida its very intersting
Mert,
If you prefer a vinegar based sauce try north Carolina type BBQ Eastern is whole hog BBQ with a vinegar based sauce, Western north Carolina is a ketchup and vinegar based sauce on something like pork shoulder, cooked with mainly hickory wood.
E. NC BBQ easily ranks as one of my faves. I'm from PA. I'll stand by it: go to Texas for beef BBQ or go to Eastern NC for pork BBQ.
most of the restaurants have got unsweetened tea yes the south is known for sweet tea so ask for a sweet tea or unsweetened tea thanks for the video
Mert.....your accent is so cool.

Just spent Thanksgiving weekend in Savannah. Beautiful architecture and great seafood.

One of the first words that my little southern toddler cousins learned to say was..."Ta-ta". A toddlers version of "Thank You" in Mississippi)

Also he’s absolutely right about the moss! The chiggers in it are awful! They literally burrow under your skin and they itch like crazy
It's great to see that two of the scenes in "Walter's World" video are from the road to my home region.

"Mirachel Whip" isn't tart or spicy. It is sweet and sweet you don't want on your sandwich.
Go to Charleston ,South Carolina ..It is a great place I live fairly close to and I whish I could live there..
I'm from the Midwest, in Missouri, and when I was a child I do remember being scolded by strangers when I would start whining about something or being too loud. It always snapped me right into good behavior 😅
We boil crawfish and blue crabs a lot when they’re in season. Summer months. Delicious! Visit us in Lake Charles Louisiana! We’d love to have you!
I love vinegar based bbq sauce but I’m from North Carolina so I might be biased
I don't think it's biased. I'm from Florida and me and all my friends and family prefer Carolina vinegar or mustard vinegar sauce. It's the best.
As a lifelong Texan, I can guarantee a hilariously-surreal experience lined with regular pit barbecue stops and burger joints in my home state-each location is often vastly different from the last.

This was filmed in Savannah, Georgia and I grew up in Georgia and then graduated from high school in Savannah. I love that city
He does a great one on visiting New Orleans
I have so many Scottish and Scots Irish ancestors that have been in the Deep South for over 300 years. According to Ancestry and 23 and me i am 50% Scottish. Born in Alabama and raised in Georgia. Southerners have a saying, “ Born in America. Southern by the grace of God”.
Come to the Scottish Festival. The Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina. They love there tradition. It's fun!
Funny enough the south had a lot of Scottish settlers in the 1700’s
Visit New Orleans. Best food and nicest people. Lots to see and do here.
If I had a choice of where in the South I’d make a free trip it would be New Orleans. The food, the views, the culture.
I love miracle whip.. I know, it's sacrilege.. lolol.. but we don't have Dukes where I live, so I do have Mayo store brand.
I've never been to a BBQ joint myself, but the one place I hear people mention over & over is Terry Black's in Texas; they have just about every meat that can be smoked, including a beef rib they call the "dinosaur rib" (it's HUGE).

Charleston and Savannah are probably your best bet as far as beautiful places and great food is all around.
Asheville, North Carolina (Blue Ridge Parkway, Biltmore, Estate); Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia and if you have time to go that far, New Orleans, Louisiana.
They also love their NASCAR racing in the South or Stockcar .

My ancestors on my father’s side came to North Carolina from south western Scotland in 1700.
Miracle Whip is not a mayo it's a salad dressing.

Try coastal Mississippi first.
Not as large a culture shock, a wee bit international. But still very southern. Excellent seafood.
My buddy came down to Florida from New Jersey to go camping, he used the Spanish moss to wipe his ass........oh boy, his nether region was infested with chiggers 😂😂😂
You up by St. Augustine?
@@Ira88881 we were camping in Ocala im from Tampa
@@nicknomad7698 I asked because I’m in Coral Springs, and the only Spanish Moss I ever saw was in St. Augustine.
I love that place.
Central Florida used to have a lot of Spanish moss. I can sympathize about the chiggers.
The best BBQ does not need sauce.
I’m from Pittsburgh,Pa. I think the manners thing is cultural. I’m AA and we were raised to do all of those things. Some people use manners and some don’t. I’ve lived in the south and not everyone has the best manners it’s subjective.

South Carolina BBQ is a must have 😋
crawfish are little like lobster. They are really good

The best hands down is Texas. Based on the Mexican food alone.
Btw 34 years living in Texas never heard anyone call that a buggy lol only a shopping cart lol
Oh, it'll be above 32 C.
Southern Low country boil
Best way for me to describe Miracle Whip is as the Salty sandwich spread. Whereas Mayonnaise is the Sweeter choice!
Miracle whip is NOT salty, its sweet.
we don t say buggie in florida we say cart he said a lot of wrong things
I am originally from Alabama. I moved away 45 years ago. I moved back there in 2022. It is a different world. Yes, manners and being polite are extremely important. The thing is, in "The South", some of the endearing sayings they use are outright insults to people who don't know what is really meant. They are very politically opionated and are quick to point out where you are wrong if you don't agree with them. It is a nice place to visit but living there is a totally different animal. The first “don’t” is: visit the South. Obey that one, and you’re fine.
