Hi Linda! I’ve just found your channel and love what you are sharing. I see that you haven’t shared anything for a couple of years… hope you come back with more of your techniques?! You inspire me and make me so happy!😊
Well this is some next level shit lol, I really couldn't find any other way to discribe it. Just beautiful, I love the texture from the tissue paper and the colour palette gives it that beautiful antique look.
Linda...this is amazing!! I adore the technique, colors. Who would have thought? This adds another dimension to watercolors!!! Love this. I have commented on Part 2, with a question. Thank you so very much!😘💖🎨
Hi Linda Your work is so inspiring and it’s the kind of watercolor I always wanted to learn to do. Thank you so much. I also tried to do your inktense butterflies. They are awesome! Thanks again for your work
Very nice. I have used this technique also, but I used rice paper in lieu of tissue paper. Also I crumbled the rice paper before adhering it to the 140 pound paper.
Absolutely love what yor doing with the watercolor over the tissue paper! cant wait to try it! Wondering if yor holding yor phone while painting, very wobbly?? Would be easier to follow if we could see the whole painting as we follow along??
Really beautiful. I have done this in my sketchbook few years ago... and i love the look of it. But I have been unsure of the archival quality of the painting if I use tissue paper (haven't found acid free label on tissue paper) so I have not used it for painting. Do you know about the impact of using tissue paper on the longevity of the painting?
Best to purchase the tissue paper from your art supply store, if unsure ask the shop if it’s acid free. That way you can be reassured. Also use artists quality gesso. The gesso seals the tissue paper, like a sandwich so all will be well 😀
Thank you so much for showing how you swatch out. I have avoided doing this but your method has given me the inspiration to get to it and I’ve also been realising how important it is to know which colours are transparent or opaque - for layering or under painting. Oh and of course I love your process. Will this work on cheap watercolour paper? I guess the main thing is the gesso so you could also do it on a primed canvas?
I love it very cool but why would you need to use watercolor paper at all if you're always going to be using gesso or Modge Podge or Elmer's Glue? I guess you don't need watercolor ground at all
great stuff Linda, but how did you get that beautiful tree like structure on the surface. I know you described it, but this is a process we need to observe. That said, I'm a fan...your work is often experimental and always interesting.
Thank you, Linda. Yes, I should have said varnish of some kind. Sorry. I was pleased with my finished painting, though I have a long way to go to catch up to your expertise (not much chance, though. I’m 80 years old and have only been painting for three, lol. Again. THANK YOU.
@@babs675 well done on your painting journey, fantastic! You might want to consider joining my Facebook group, Art with Linda Brown, you can share your work there, ask questions etc x
You may smudge either the watercolour or the pastel by applying a matt medium. I would suggest a spray matt acrylic varnish. 3 coats 1 hour apart, rotating the work each application 😀
Hello, Linda. I realize this video is a couple years old but I am wondering if the artist’s quality white gesso you use is a thick or thin consistency.
Good question, it’s a medium consistency, if it was too thick it would be hard to brush on and possibly tare the tissue paper. However you do need it to coat well to give a good barrier surface between the WC and the tissue. The last tub I bought was really thick, like so thick it wouldn’t brush on easily, so I added some water to it, mixed it well to a good medium consistency.
Great video..Well done. May I ask which palette you use. & selection or map?? Or .video if your setup would be brilliant..as it looks very well planned. Please share you're colours in.palette..many thanks. Off to try it now 😁
Beautiful technique Linda. Can u tell me please, how long do we leave the tissue paper on the gesso base ? Think I took mine off too early. SO looking forward to when we can have our classes again at Studio 15. Any ideas?
Hi Glenda, you prepare your surface by taping down your heavy paper, apply a thickish coat of white gesso, crumple tissue paper then gently unfold it - pat it onto the wet gesso, then gently apply another coat of gesso over the top of the tissue paper. You do not remove the tissue paper. Classes can’t resume yet, we have to wait until it’s safe to start up. Once safe, I’m going to limit my students to 8 per class to allow plenty of social distancing between tables for a while.

I’m sorry I am not sure of your question, due to your language. I think you’re asking if you can use acrylic instead of watercolour? If so, yes it’s possible, just thin your acrylics to a watercolour consistency

I have done this and my 140# Watercolor paper buckled. I wonder if this would work just as well on a Masonite board. Because you really don’t need the watercolor paper when you’ve coated it with this much gesso and tissue paper. Or use 300# paper.
Really interesting technique. Love your work. Is it the tissue paper that keeps the watercolour on? The gesso I use is acrylic gesso and the watercolour would just bead off it. This is almost a year later, so I hope you still see the comment.
Have you tried the process? If you try the process you will understand the paint stays on the gessoed tissue paper. The paint will lift off very easily if you need it to. The paint doesn’t absorb into the paper like watercolor paper. Try it I think you’ll like it I did. You get a lot of Unusual textures.
I use a high quality gesso, the watercolour does not bead. The cheap gessos have a very plastic feel to them and are not recommended for this technique. I have been using this technique for about 5 years now and my artworks are stable. Try a higher quality from a good art supply store 😊goof luck with it
@@lindabrownartist thank you so much. I will look around. Maybe a matt gesso. I do use pretty good quality but it is still plastic based, but I should give it a try!
@@lavonnecarrick2238 thank you Lavonne! I am def going to try this! I thought the tissue paper may have something to do with the paint staying on. Super excited!
I feel I must ask what you consider a "copy" and hence not sellable? Isn't that almost impossible using this technique? I only ask because I also have a unique technique that I don't want people to copy and I don't know how to teach it and "claim" it at the same time. Help? :)
It’s difficult teaching a style that’s unique, the students get locked in and can’t see the bigger picture. They tend to think that the technique is for that particular type type of painting and can’t see outside the square. This technique could be definitely used to paint many subjects, such as underwater scenes, flower arrangements, beaches, rivers... I teach technique for learning purposes only, you can copy my work to learn, you can hang it in your own home or gift it. You can’t copy my work and claim it as your own. Copyright, you can’t copyright technique, it’s the artwork that is copyrighted. In my opinion if a work is recognisable as someone else’s work it’s a copy.
@@lindabrownartist Thank you so much for replying. I failed to mention how much I admire your work! So I think I understand... If for instance if I paint florals using my technique, and then I teach that to someone who paints a tree with it - they can sell their tree. But if they paint florals similar to mine, then they can't; or at least not without credit to me? My work, like yours, cannot be EXACTLY copied, but where do you (and I) draw the line? To date, I have not sold anything online simply to avoid too many "copycats" out there. Case in point might be all the paint-pourings going on :)

Most papers made in Australia are acid free. I would Google acid free tissue paper and hopefully you will be able to purchase online 😀
Hi Kay, what brand of 300gsm paper are you using?
You need to apply the gesso quite generously under the tissue and over the top also 😀
Beautiful effect. It appears that you are applying the watercolor directly to the 2nd coat of gesso, is that correct?
Yes, correct, dry it first though 😀
What type of tissue paper is this, Is it something you buy in the art shop or any tissue paper would work?
Any acid free tissue paper would work. I buy packs of white gift wrap.
What tissue paper and glue do you use?
The tissue paper is the type bought to wrap gifts, often found in newsagents or variety stores. I use white gesso as the ‘glue’ - be generous.
