    I started out looking at Hyundai/KIA models, but I simply don't see any way that I can justify those prices, especially when MG offer the 4 and 5 at these prices.
    I'd already dismissed the VW iD3 not only because of the continuing problems with the electronics, but because an iD3 specced at a similar level to these alternatives (both Hyundai/KIA and MG) comes out at 48K Euros!
    So MG4 or 5? I'm still not sure; 1 offers lower price/smaller size, the other larger, higher price. I suspect that the ultra long range 4 that is due out next year will probably be the one. But in both cases, it is the addition of towing capacity that is the clincher for me.

    Why are electric cars so limited in terms of towing capability in general, depside more than enough kW compared to gasoline counterparts?

    • @blujez
      @blujez Год назад

      Because it absolutely batters range. It's why there's very few electric estates. Battery raises floor and kills boot space and the variable weight screws up range. Or at least that's what I've heard multiple times. Explains a lot. Who wants a car that you can't rely on the range of?

    • @kevintang5473
      @kevintang5473 Год назад +2

      Because there are no variable gear ratios in EV. In a gas car, you (or the computer) simply downshift when you need to drag a heavier load, and the power required will be almost linearly correlated with the added weight and resistance. Not the same for EV. Once you get out of the optimal weight / resistance range the efficiency will drop dramatically

    • @blujez
      @blujez Год назад

      @@kevintang5473 ah right that would make sense. I guessed it was a quirk of EV. Hence why massive trucks and SUVs are possible but estates are problematic. At least with current battery technology.

    • @chrishyde1216
      @chrishyde1216 Год назад

      I don’t get these justifications. Give the towing capacity and let the buyer decide how to deal with it; if the capacity isn’t there in the first place then it’s game over. Also the charging stations need to allow for some people towing, without the need to unhitch. Otherwise EVs are great for towing, with lots of torque and quiet on site.

      I thought the old one was OK but the new one looks more elegant, but looks are hardly worth debating as we all have different tastes and everybody has a valid view. The killer feature compared to other EVs is that it's an estate. Putting looks aside, and noting that the mechanicals are the same, the reasons to buy the latest version are the roof rails now being usable with 75kg, the ability to tow 500kg, the remote app, the slicker infotainment (?), and I think the headlights are now LED. I'd have try the old and new and decide if the latter is worth spending more.

    Apparently one in five cars sold is Electric which i find amazing. For me they need far more development because they are so unpractible. For example if im stuck in traffic on a cold winter's day i want to have the heater on without worrying about running out of fuel. They do serve a purpose in large cities if your not venturing to far from home. I know of at least 3 people who are thoroughly frustrated with their electric car and can't wait to get rid of them.

      Personally I wouldn't buy a new battery pack. I'd have my existing one refurbished for a fraction of the cost of replacing it, but that's just me. I rarely use public chargers, but if I did, I would subscribe to the charge network I wanted to use, because this can reduce the cost by up to 50%. My local charge network charges 45p per kwh if you subscribe. Charging at home on an off-peak tariff costs around a 7th of the cost of using petrol.....
