    duke 64 was my introduction to duke nukem, absolutely loved this game. Duke match provided lots of replayability and after finally trying the PC version I much preferred the N64 weapons and ammo types

      I have to agree. In Duke Nukem 3D I find that the RPG and Devastator are a bit too similar to one another. The Grenade Launcher in D64 has more tactical uses. @@revenantevil

    A fun thing me any my friends did was three player Dukematch, but set the one bot to the highest skill level. Then we would hole up somewhere defensible and venture out to hunt the Evil Duke. If a hunt went wrong the remaining players would retreat back to the base and defend it from the Evil Duke. The respawning player had to avoid him long enough to make it back to safety. It was SUPER tense and incredibly fun.

    Something I appreciate about Duke Nukem 64, is that for the most part the secret levels feel like natural progression paths in the game. What I mean is, if you pay attention you can tell in Duke Nukem 64 that every level transitions smoothly into the next. If you access Duke Burger you avoid the trap at the end of Gun Crazy, but then captured at the end of Duke Burger instead.

    • @revenantevil
      @revenantevil  7 месяцев назад +4

      I agree. They did a great job at integrating the levels where they'd make sense. The fact they even thought to get you captured in Duke Burger to help continuity just goes to show how much the devs were putting into it. Hats off to them.

    The total conversion has since been surpassed by Rednukem, though it lives on in a conversion for NetDuke32 by Striker. Yes, you can now play Duke64 in multiplayer on PC :) Now we just need someone to be crazy enough to reverse engineer the Saturn version...
    Duke64 is interesting in that it's still worth playing even if you've played the PC game. While the Saturn version is arguably more impressive considering the system it's on, it doesn't bring anything new other than its rearrangement of the game's soundtrack (the less said about the versions exclusive level the better) as for Total Meltdown, at least it gives Saturn owners something to point and laugh at the PS1 owners for after getting the catastrophic Doom port

    • @revenantevil
      @revenantevil  Год назад +5

      Oh wow, the more you know! Don't know how I didn't find that out with all the research I've been doing, haha.
      I love the Saturn version but there's a reason why there's no TC, haha. I really like the remixed tunes though. But yeah, Urea 51... eugh, jeez.
      Might have to do something with Doom on the channel, such a great game.
      Thanks for the great comment! :)

    17:10 Good video but I assume castle dukenstein is not a reference to frankenstein, but rather wolfenstein 3d, since its such a big inspiration a lot of retro shooters I've noticed reference it. It being a castle seals the deal for me

    • @revenantevil
      @revenantevil  5 месяцев назад

      I agree that it's likely a reference to Wolfenstein. But the level does also contain a room that directly references Frankenstein (my bad for not really showing it in the video!). So my bet is - it's a bit of both.

    While the biggest complaint most have with this version of the game was the lack of music (outside of the main title theme remix, which is IMO, the best version of Duke's theme), I actually didn't mind it.
    Granted, this was my introduction to Duke, but even in retrospect, after having played nearly all of the various other versions of the game, I actually kinda prefer the ambience of the N64 game. It's probably got a lot to do with nostalgia as well, but there's something about Duke 64 that feels much more atmospheric and many times times, genuinely unsettling.
    Not to mention that Duke 64 was the first version to feature true 3D polygonal environments. I recall playing the original PC Duke, as well as the X360 'remaster'back in the day and being immediately turned off by the screen perspective warping every time you look up and down. Of course newer ports of Duke 3D now feature true 3D environments just like the 64 version did, but even when I play these versions, I find myself muting the BGM just to fully immerse myself into that nostalgia-filled romp through Duke 3D's early 3D interpretation of LA (and the moon).
    Not to mention, without music, Duke 3D really gives off the sensation of 'liminal spaces', which has become pretty popular these days.

    My brother and I first experienced Duke 3D on our Saturn in 1997 or so and we enjoyed it a lot. Then, later in the 2000's I got used to the PC source ports, but I still fire up the original 1996 release on DOSBox as it has a unique atmosphere and charm that higher resolutions can't match.
    A few years ago I decided to play Duke 64 on Retroarch (Mupen64 Core) and the good thing is that you can adjust the controls as you'd like. I didn't know what to expect aside from the game being toned down, but I enjoyed this version quite a bit, the differences more than make up for it and I noticed that what makes Duke 3D a great game isn't its macho tone and sexualized women (but even so, the game has more than enough of that, specially on secret areas), the new weapons are also great. Like you say, the total conversion for PCs is the best way to play it today.

    even with all the flaws, ill STILL take the N64 version over the PC version, any day!
    the 2 player mode was also fun, if you die u just respawn at start. jump on the other player's head to get on higher platforms.
    with monsters that had a rare chance to insta kill you, even with 200 health and 100% armor! (that not many people talk about)
    and multiplayer... That was best to play with real people because the bots can be very dumb most the time! like getting stuck next to a door!
    not to forget the OP explosive shells! flying around with a jetpack, 1 shot killing anyone that gets in your zone lol

I kind of drew parallels to Doom64 with was also diffrent from its PC counterpart. I never got to play it. But I think if i would play now it definitly would be thougth the total conversion on PC.
    For the port, I think what I like alot is the safing of the babes feature. I kind of wonder why this was never part of the orginal game. Considering how Duke one liners "nobody steals out chicks". Would make you guess its in his interest to safe them rather just leave em in the green goo?

    Memory would definitely have been an issue, not just storage space, but also how much you can load into memory at once.
    Every texture, every sprite, every tile that makes up the interface and menu, that all has to be loaded to be used, and it all adds up. That's together with everything else which needs to be loaded into memory too.
    This is why loads of compromises had to be made for all the console ports of Doom and Duke at the time, cut down and simplified level geometry is one thing, but you've also gotta reduce the variety in textures used, and sometimes in monster variety. Looking at Doom, the big Spidermind boss is very seldom used (even being omitted in all levels in the Final Doom port), because the frames are huge and takes up lots of memory, and he sucks anyway, while the Archvile is plain too many frames to handle period. For PSX Duke, the explosion sprites are cut in half and then mirrored, no doubt the music is absent in Duke 64 because they just couldn't fit it in.

    After decades of playing the n64 and pc 3D version, only now watching this video I spotted this Easter egg: on the first level, at the sign that in the 3D version it asks "Innocent?", the later n64 version has "guilty!". 😮 So they answered the question.

    This version is the best in terms of gameplay, the weapons are way better than the 3D version... I really wish there was a stand alone mod for Duke 64 that directly ported over the weapons.
    The SMG are able to actually target more than one alien at a time because of the auto aim and them being dual wielded, the grenade launcher has way more utility and the plasma cannon has a NUKE... There are also more than 30 levels if you count the deathmatch maps.
    You can play this natively on pc with Red Nukem and it's honestly the better way to play it over the original hardware, PLUS with Red Nukem 64 you can play with music and turn off texture filtering.

    • @TheStrayHALOMAN
      @TheStrayHALOMAN Год назад

      @@revenantevil Yeah I've played the TC, The native Duke 64 PC port "Red Nukem 64" is better since it's using the actual ROM from the N64.
      The TC just tried to remake the game from scratch, so when I play it I end up noticing all the things wrong with it like the Grenade physics and SMG only damaging one enemy instead of two at the same time.

    The fact that the PC game had adult content for it and certain things, Doesn't make the 64 pale. I liked the ammo types, you could have other explosives than just the other weapons.
    In a way the replacement of the RPG to the grenade launcher added some tactical use of the weapon and also it has a lot of ammo. while you can carry less, you had 12 rounds per pickup, which is easy to fill and encourage its use.
    My only gripe is the ammo types weren't easy to switch, I do think the PC mod have the switch available by changing weapons.
    so you can use them by just alternating between versions of the weapon.
    Actually a nice duke mod can be a various inclusion of various weapons that appear through the games.
    I don't mean all but at least some who had a particular functionnality at least.
    Zero hour had a lot of weapons for example.
    So duke can get a subsequent arsenal to blow aliens up.
    My main gripe here is that duke nukem doesn't have a proper sequel even if the current 2001 DNF is having a proper treatment.
    Which is something that was missing from the actual DNF.
    They planed a lot of ammo types, a nice arsenal who was a lot diminished in the final game. (they basically took the old stuff and added 3 alien guns) meh !
    I kind of like having original weapons in my FPS and considering the whole trend of oldschool shooters Duke have its place :)

    Some of the censorship is baffling, like replacing sexual themes with gore, but I quite like the mechanic of saving babes. Duke64's implementation is a bit cartoonish, but it works. One thing about losing parallax skies is that it makes the space levels a bit bland, as they couldn't add a lot of geometry outside the playable area.
    Anyway, a deep dive into the level changes would probably make an interesting video.

    • @revenantevil
      @revenantevil  Год назад

      Agreed. Those babes are gruesome!
      I noticed that episode 2 has barely any changes. You think it's because of the sky box? I'll have to make sure I properly research this if/when I do the levels video. Thanks for the comment! :)

    • @BSzili
      @BSzili Год назад

      @@revenantevil It's probably because of the theme, it's hard to come up with new geometry you can add in space, at least outside the playable area. I only wish they came up with some way to render stars, so you are not staring into the black void, but it's a only minor gripe.

    I want to see a video about the level changes.
    I actually like Duke 64 more than the base version, it was the first version of the game I owned myself as I was too young to play the Pc version and my dad wouldn’t buy it, though I played the shareware episode.
    DUKE 64 was definitely one of the better ports made for a game
    I really prefer the different weapons and updated looks in Duke 64, the weapons feel bland in the original version to me. But World Tour doesn’t give an option to use the Duke64 weapons
    Its multiplayer mode sold me on the game, I played it a lot in solo deathmatch against bots. For some reason I had so much fun playing that
    I also owned Total Meltdown on PS1 and I didn’t like it much because the framerate was always bad and there was no easy way to play multiplayer except with a cumbersome link cable
