I’m happy that these videos show how Raimi’s take on Spider-Man isn’t as accurate as many may seem. Peter isn’t a quiet kid who lets life treat him like a bitch but rather a regular guy who has genuine flaws, he gets angry, sad and he isn’t a shy kid but rather more outgoing. Those Raimi movies really did change how people saw Peter.
I mean to be fair this point in the comics is a fair bit in Parker starts off as the quintessential shy bookish kid but grows to be more outgoing and confident. I think the first Rami movie is an excellent portrayal of early Peter but he should've developed more in the second one (I can't say the third because Symbiote)
Honestly beautiful it shows how much of peters life is characterized by death & love the death of uncle ben lead to his depression but aunt mays love got him out of it gwens death lead to him shedding his mask of "peter parker" and mary jane helped him realize who he truly is its incredibly sad how they refuse to let peter grow like this anymore (they broke him and MJ up because they believed it would "age him up too fast") which is a big reason on why post 2007s spiderman kinda sucks
I like Leo’s after credit scenes. They always let me know what’s coming up in the Implicitly Pretentious Cinematic Universe. Also, top notch voice acting.
Finish the run! More angst is coming! Maybe I was reading too much into this, but after Gwen died Peter definitely seemed more irritable and neurotic then he had been in a while. I even read most of his quips as Spider-Man as just meaner. To me, it seemed like he was processing grief in a all too common way: subconsciously. And little bits of it would creep out from time to time, shown in anger. But yeah, the later Conway run deals more with Gwen's death
I have been waiting for this. Honestly after watching Matt Drapier's video on the events on this and what happens after into the Roger Stern run, I really want to see a Spider-Man show adapt the early years of the Marvel heroes lives without adding characters who didn't appear until later. I honestly wanted to see a animated or live action adaptation of Marvels by Alex Ross. I hope you do your own video on Marvels. Not the movie, the book
DUDE - you can't just tease me with a Greg Rucka era Wonder Woman cover like that! Have you been reading that run?! I need a series from you covering that whole arc!
They're such a great and well developed couple that many people should look after in real life, I sure hope they won't be separated bcs of editorial ideas
Is that an Evangalion thumbnail but... Spider-Man? Also I'd love for you to cover Peter-Parker: Spider-Man vol 2, #47. Best heart to heart between Peter and Norman.
The thing I think people miss about Spider-Man is that he is supposed to grow up. When we first meet him he is an awkward bitter and selfish 15 year old. Over time we see him become flirty, cocky, wise cracking, but overconfident. We watch him make mistakes that have real consequences like ignoring Harry's mental decline into the second goblin. Then we see him become a more humble hero. Earn the respect of other heroes. Even make peace with J Jonah Jameson. The Peter we know today is caught in a loop where he is rarely allowed to grow. Most adaptations get so caught up in the bullied teen angel they lose sight of the wisecracking flirty trickster he grew up to be. It's why modern Spider-Man stories are frustrating.
I have said this multiple times in various videos related to this topic but I will always feel it needs repeating. As much as I love the raimi films, their version of mary jane was always the weakest part and as a result every MJ afterwards has felt the need to show off how "they're not like other MJs" assuming the raimi MJ is how all MJs are like when that's far from the case. the original comic run of MJ was honestly a really interesting character in my opinion, and while her story isn't directly about action/superheroics it still had a great level of depth and character to it. (which is also another reason why im sad spectacular spiderman was cut because their MJ was both comic accurate and one of the best) so it just sorta annoys me that newer writers basically try to correct a problem that never truly existed in the first place. also to add to some of the weirdness/confusion of this situation, apparently the raimi films weren't originally going to have MJ, it was meant to be gwen stacy from the start since that's what raimi grew with but the studio thought MJ was more recognizable and thus decided to use her, so it resulted in MJ being written like gwen and then gwen showed up in 3 she acted more like MJ,
I definitely appreciated this video. I have fucked up so much with regard to my own behaviour in the past, or jumped to defend the wrong person (I once wrote a whole blog post defending Joss Whedon after Age of Ultron came out... shudder). I believe in accountability, but there are plenty of people willing to seek out people's past mistakes to use as ammunition.
And yet we’re still talking about Gwen Stacy decades later. Mary Jane is the one you hang out with, be friends with or even be friends with benefits if you get my drift.
