Anytime I read a Spidey comic, I always hear the voices from this show. I love Christopher Daniel Barnes as Spider-Man, one of my favourite portrayals. Him and Tobey made my childhood. Excellent video!
Black Cat is my first and most impostant childhood crush. To this day I think of her as the most attractive (pretty smart and charismatic too!) comic book heroine.
For years I was convinced the Water-clone MJ arc was this fever-dream I had, upon revisiting I can't fault that assumption. As much as I love the series, that decision is one I can never seem to wrap my mind around...
Implicitly Pretentious’s multiple analyses (analysi?) of Spider-Man are some of the best out there, he really gets all the different versions of the character, from the original comic to different interpretations, this guy gets every facet of Spider-Man.
One aspect of the show that I found very clever is how most of the villains work as counterpoint to Peter's story as their stories usually have a ironic ending that fits their obsessions. Just like them, Peter, when he got his powers, wanted to be famous and didn't care for others, a attitude that resulted in the death of Uncle Ben. But Peter learned from his mistake and broke the circle, choosing to be a selfless hero ranther than grumpy bully like Flash Thompson or J Jonah Jameson. The villains in the show all have objectives and selfish goals, but, unlike Spider man, they don't learn from their mistakes and end up suffering worse fates cause by their own ambition. For exemple: - The Kingpin does everthing to keep his position as the big crime boss in NY but this cost his wife (who leaves him) and his son (who goes to prision). - Doctor Octopus, in his first battle against Spider man, is defeated due to his refusal to let go of his invention. - In the "tablet of time" arc, Silvermane wanted to be young again and as result is turned into a baby, and so on. - Green Goblin not only is defeated by his own attempt to kill Spider man but in his first apperance the scene where Osborn is crushed by the Goblin statue represents him having to face his own reflection and see the truth: he is the one who ruined his own life (and also Kingpin, but it was Norman own decision to make deals with the crime boss).
@@allature Yes and considering how the creators confirmed that, if the show had got a six season they would have brought Richard Fisk back as the Rose, I think the series would show Kingpin finally being betrayed by his son, continuing the circle that he choose to keep instead or breaking it.
I’ve never seen the show, but Someone, I can’t remember who but if I do I’ll edit this, mentioned that the fact that this show never said what Cletus Cassidy did (that he was a serial killer) made it scarier for them, as they would just imagine the horrible atrocities he could have committed. I just thought that was a really cool effect for a show to have. Limitation is the mother of creativity after all.

@@Aisha_Luv I grew up watching Spider-Man the Animated Series. The entire series and seasons are on Disney Plus. It’s really awesome for every Marvel fan🕷️🕸️🕷️
I grew up thinking hobgoblin was one of the main villains in his rogues gallery because of this show. I also got introduced to daredevil and punisher and their origins. This show was crazy
If you grew up in the 80s, Hobgoblin was one of the main villains. In the late 80s, Marvel ranked Spider-Man's top 30 rogues and I think the two Goblins were tied for first.
I just realized something: Spider-Man The Animated Series' fifth season SERVED AS RAIMI'S CLEAREST INSPIRATION FOR HIS SPIDEY FILMS! Think about it: the Uncle Ben that Spider Carnage faces feels like Raimi's interpretation of Uncle Ben (except he encourages Peter to grow up instead of holding Peter accountable for Ben's great-power-great-responsibility dream), and the season itself dives the most into the show's general "darkness"; and fitting that Raimi is known for his work in horror.
The Raimi films definitely took a lot of inspiration from this show: the Green Goblin being an alternate personality of Norman Osborn created by his exposure to chemical gas. Otto Octavius being a cool guy and a mentor of Peter's before going mad. Eddie Brock being Peter's rival at the Daily Bugle. The Venom Symbiote causing its host to become super aggressive. Spidey mysteriously losing his powers during a period of stress. Introducing Gwen Stacy at the end instead of the beginning.
The animated series was my first experience with spider man. So whenever I see a spider man film or tv show i expect it to be as good or better as the animated series which is harder then you think.
Something that I also really liked about this show is that Black Cat is given a lot more depth compared to other interpretations. She isn't just a Catwoman knock-off, she's her own character with her own fears and goals. Also, they show a more heroic side of her that isn't seen much anywhere else.
This is why I love this channel so much. Leo manages to find value in things that I couldn't see at first glance. I watched this show a lot when I was a kid, and now that I'm in my 20s I went back to it out of nostalgic whimsey, and I was so caught up in the bad CGI cityscapes, and obvious toy grabs, that I couldn't see the deeper meaning of Peter's journey, and while the execution may be questionable, the message is stronger than it was before watching this video. p.s. as weird as Semper's version of Peter Finds Mary Jane story was, it was still infinitely better than One More Day.
I like the way that back in the 90s H G Wells not only wrote the book 'The Time Machine' (which is a nice little read by the way, plus I've always enjoyed the 1960s film version with Rod Tyler) but they would always have actually invent one for real. 'Lois and Clark' went and did the exact same thing as well. Plus in 1985 the BBC put out a two part 'Doctor Who' story entitled 'Timelash' which had the Doctor meet H G Wells and after stowing away on the TARDIS, he went on an adventure into space and time, during which he experienced some things that were to go on and inspire his works. Also, and this isn't as well known, there was a (sadly no longer considered canon, thanks to the 1985 two parter) 1970s 'Doctor Who' comic strip called 'The Eternal Present' where the Doctor meets H G Wells, who turns out to have made his own time machine. You can tell that I'm a Whovian, can't you.... I'll also add that in the book the main character isn't named, as he is only referred to as 'the Time Traveller' which I also th8nk inspired the BBC to make the Doctor a nameless mysterious alien. Happy Times and Places. Oh and just one more thing before I go.... Nuff Said
3:29 I always found that weird. The DCAU shows had characters punching each other, using real guns and being killed off. So did the X-Men animated series. The Spider-Man TAS characters calling death being destroyed was unintentionally funny.
I'm so glad you made this. Spider-Man TAS is not only my favourite Spider-Man Cartoon to this day (and will probably remain that way for the rest of my life), but is still one of my top 3 favourite Versions of Spider-Man across ALL Medias (alongside Ultimate Spider-Man (Comics) and MCU Spider-Man). Christopher Daniel Barnes IS the Voice of Spider-Man IMO.
The Stan Lee cameo is why I argue for Spider-Man TAS to be the best animated Spider-Man. It stands out, giving closure to Spider-Man, he sees his purpose in all the suffering, to be an inspiration, having a bit of comedy and having Spider-Man be entitled to happiness with help
The part where Spider-Man says to Stan Lee that we all grow up eventually. Idk why but that line really hit me. I’m 21 now but I remember watching this show when I was a little kid. I never got to finish the show like a year or so ago. I was so upset that I never got to find out if Spider-Man ever found MJ. Then watching this and hearing Stan Lee saying that just really hit me and started crying. Wish they finished the show right rather then leaving it on the cliffhanger they did. Sucks that one of my childhood shows never got finished and finally knowing the full story of what happened to the series. PS* Also, amazing editing and song. Thank you so much for completing a piece of my childhood in explanation❤
Fantastic video. The 90s Spider-Man is like the purest version of the character. No other version either in the comics or live action movies was able to capture this peters nuance and gravitas. Despite the shows limitations it’s still memorable and impressive to this day!
Great video, and the best animated spiderman show...period, it can be goofy but it's ultimately the most consistent and adult take on the character in a long running format, sometimes even more respectful than the comics, not to mention that intro music will be in my brain till I die, RADIOACTIVE SPIDER BLOOD!!!!
While I wasn’t born yet when the show originally aired, I do remember watching reruns of the show on Toon Disney (which is now Disney XD) when I was a kid and I loved it. It was cool to hear a bit about the behind-the-scenes stuff. Keep up the good work, man.
The episode with the girl from the make a wish two part was a crazy introspective and the best one. All the other episodes he usually argued with people who would at least be an adult, but hearing a child remind him of the innocence and inspiration of becoming spider-man was an incredible metaphor for the pride he was starting to lose.
Amazing video! I just love all the season arcs que blend so well together to create this feeling of a maturing spider-man. And I agree the ending cliffhanger is way more satisfying, specially after he meets Stan Lee. This series overall is the best adaptation of the character, in my opinion. And the MUSIC, oh... the music. Great stuff!
All I remember is the man spider season and when symbiote spider man was screaming "GET BACK HERE SHOCKER, ILL HUNT YOU UNTIL THE END OF THE EARTH" or something like that. It was completely over the top and I loved it, really need to rewatch it now that I'm older.
It is very disappointing that there are not more people who watch content like yours. Until I stumbled upon your channel I desired some RUclips content that would continuously and consistently take a more in depth look at these characters and their stories.
I find it odd that Venom despite being redeemed, Carnage being his arch enemy in the comics and being able to be a ally from Peter's world, does not make a return appearance and is left to his horrible fate. Venom also doesn't get a cameo when showcasing the other Spider-Man spinoff characters like Miles and Spider-Gwen despite being the first. Couple this with utter warping of the Venom symbiote's character and to a lesser extent Eddie, it makes me wonder if the writer had something against the character.
Crazy to look back retrospectively that it was created to sell merch and the restrictions upon the creators, even for a kid’s tv shows. This an BTAS I’ll cherish.
I remember the transforming arc when he first gets his powers. He had a dream where he was transformed into a spider but still had his human head and Aunt May flushed him down the sink. Then the drain leads him to a lake where he grows or something and the military kill him. I don't know what is was but that shook me up as a kid.
I hear Josh Keaton when I read 1610 Spidey and Barnes when I read classic pre clone saga 616- although some of the more recent stuff I’ve been hearing Yuri Lowenthal.
Am I the only one who always thought that those circles on morbius hands were a lot scarier than him just being usual vampire with blood sucking fangs?
I will never forgive the fact that we never got to see Carnage as Jack the Ripper. The mere fact that idea was conceived is remarkable. Joking aside, I loved this show when I was younger, alongside Spectacular. Sure, the reused animation was something even kid me criticized, but the ideas were remarkable, and Spidey's arc was truly respectable - something which even the comic writers should use as an example.
0:32, I remember when it was only semi-literate policemen at press conferences who would say "concerning" instead of worrying, troubling, to make it sound more official, grannies worry, but policemen found the amount of litter being dropped "concerning", even though usually it means pertaining to. This was about 15 years ago. My, how we used to mock those mentally ponderous semi-literate minor officials; trying to impress us with their A level English, but using it wrong, and now everyone does it, probably because they have the same reading age of about 12 now, like the police do.
This not only has the definitive Spider-Man outside of comics for me, it also has the best portrayal of Morbius to date. That version's backstory may be greatly tweaked, but the spirit of the character is exactly the same.

For years I was convinced the Water-clone MJ arc was this fever-dream I had, upon revisiting I can't fault that assumption.
As much as I love the series, that decision is one I can never seem to wrap my mind around...
I miss this show. The new one are so made for child… no relationchip, hard challenges, no losses …
Implicitly Pretentious’s multiple analyses (analysi?) of Spider-Man are some of the best out there, he really gets all the different versions of the character, from the original comic to different interpretations, this guy gets every facet of Spider-Man.
Analyses. The "i" for plural is (if I recall correctly) a Latin construct, and most English words (including octopuses) _do not_ use it.
For exemple:
- The Kingpin does everthing to keep his position as the big crime boss in NY but this cost his wife (who leaves him) and his son (who goes to prision).
That scene where Kingpin wonders about how long until his son comes to screw him over like he did with his old man was heartbreaking.
Ok less than five minutes in and you’ve convinced me to watch this show haha.
It's on Disney+. I love the show because it was the show that made me love Spider-Man. I grew up on the show and I feel that this is the one of the best, if not the best, version of Spider-Man.
The Marvel spider-man animated series season 5 episode 13 Farewell Spiderman the Madame Web took the Spider-man to the pink wormhole. The Spiderman say where are you taken me? The Madame Web say you are going to finds the real Mary Jane Watson again! The Spiderman say what. The Madame Web say finds your girl you love again. The Spiderman say Amen to that to Spider dear. In 2016 I watched in youtube the Spider-man tas Whip Peter finds Mary Jane Watson in the pink wormhole again. Please Marvel spider-man animated series season 6 episode 1 Peter finds real Mary Jane Watson in the Disney plus again.
@@Aisha_Luv I grew up watching Spider-Man the Animated Series. The entire series and seasons are on Disney Plus. It’s really awesome for every Marvel fan🕷️🕸️🕷️
Yeah Robbie told Jameson that Cassidy did things that even the press wouldn’t publish.
Only if spiderman was make his on web it's was really like the animated series
Best Spidey in an animated series
Just like Batman TAS
Classics and hard to out best it decades later
Ah this was a part of my childhood as well. Good times
This was the Spider-Man man show I grew up with. And I still love it!
Plus I had a huge crush on this Black Cat back in the day.
0:27 to 0:30 is the best part of the video and you can't convince me otherwise
Something that I also really liked about this show is that Black Cat is given a lot more depth compared to other interpretations. She isn't just a Catwoman knock-off, she's her own character with her own fears and goals. Also, they show a more heroic side of her that isn't seen much anywhere else.
You know a VA did a great job if you read a comic book and you hear THEIR voice in your head. That's this Spider-Man for me.
Watching this video has made me want to go back and re-watch the animated series now. So much nostalgia.
The Best Spiderman Adaptation period
Nuff Said
I just finished re-watching this show. This was a great analysis!
3:29 I always found that weird. The DCAU shows had characters punching each other, using real guns and being killed off. So did the X-Men animated series. The Spider-Man TAS characters calling death being destroyed was unintentionally funny.
Morbius’ suction hands are much more terrifying than anythingggg fangy.
The best character in history Bruce the gargoyle
That last season plan sounds incredible, I guess they loosely adapted this into Noir somewhat, but even so.
OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU! Literally the scene that scarred me from childhood and one of my fav youtubers made a video on this 😭😭😭
Man, i found your channel yesterday and i've just been watching your Spider-Man videos non-stop
Warning: strong flashing lights
first 10 seconds of video: god damn strobe-light and screaming.
great video tho. some good insight here
This show should get a comic book continuation, like X-Men TAS, so.fhsy can tie up the loose end with MJ.
Yup
Despite not everything aging well it's still the best adaptation of Spiderman
Ya somehow TAS seems the most true to the concept of Spiderman
The Stan Lee cameo is why I argue for Spider-Man TAS to be the best animated Spider-Man. It stands out, giving closure to Spider-Man, he sees his purpose in all the suffering, to be an inspiration, having a bit of comedy and having Spider-Man be entitled to happiness with help
Stan Lee was also on Spiderman and his Amazing Freinds
@@repentorendupinhellfire6270 yeah
But how much impact did it give? To me he was just there
Holy fuck, this man never stops putting out bangers. Your upload schedule is insane❤️
In the comic? Conway Spiderman run? 90s Spiderman run, karven last hunt?
@@fakeextrovert2240 thanks for the recommendation
Though I will die saying spectacular spider man was the best that never finished, this series stands out the most.
All these barriers and they still made one of the best superhero shows every made
While I wasn’t born yet when the show originally aired, I do remember watching reruns of the show on Toon Disney (which is now Disney XD) when I was a kid and I loved it.
I'm so very glad I've happened upon yor channel. Especially about anything related to the DCAU.
Hello, Do you know the background music's name between 9:06-9:58?
Being epileptic myself I appreciate when I see warnings for the flashing lights like yours 🤙🏾 I’m blessed flashing lights isn’t one of my triggers.
The fear I had for Shocker when Spiderman had the symbiote was genuine😱
All I remember is the man spider season and when symbiote spider man was screaming "GET BACK HERE SHOCKER, ILL HUNT YOU UNTIL THE END OF THE EARTH" or something like that. It was completely over the top and I loved it, really need to rewatch it now that I'm older.
I love Spider-man the animated series. This show and Ultimate Avengers introduced me to the marvel universe.
It is very disappointing that there are not more people who watch content like yours.
Until I stumbled upon your channel I desired some RUclips content that would continuously and consistently take a more in depth look at these characters and their stories.
I love that End of Evangelion reference in the first few seconds
Top 3 Spider-Man show, definitely. Love it. Your video describes pretty well why it's so great, good job.
Probably my Fav Spider-Man Series of all time
I remember the transforming arc when he first gets his powers. He had a dream where he was transformed into a spider but still had his human head and Aunt May flushed him down the sink. Then the drain leads him to a lake where he grows or something and the military kill him. I don't know what is was but that shook me up as a kid.
"Oh a flashing light warning it can't be that bad..."
*the next second*
"MY EYES"
This show was the GOAT as a kid
Hands down one the best animated adaptations of Spider-Man
Thank you for bringing back some childhood memories ❤
Venom and Morbius should have their very own spin-off television series starring Hank Azaria and Nick Jameson
Appreciate all the time it must have taken to gather this footage, well put!
I hear Josh Keaton when I read 1610 Spidey and Barnes when I read classic pre clone saga 616- although some of the more recent stuff I’ve been hearing Yuri Lowenthal.
Thank you. Someone has finally covered this slept on show.
Well made! Thanks for uploading!
Implicitly Pretentious, I love your video essays
0:32, I remember when it was only semi-literate policemen at press conferences who would say "concerning" instead of worrying, troubling, to make it sound more official, grannies worry, but policemen found the amount of litter being dropped "concerning", even though usually it means pertaining to. This was about 15 years ago. My, how we used to mock those mentally ponderous semi-literate minor officials; trying to impress us with their A level English, but using it wrong, and now everyone does it, probably because they have the same reading age of about 12 now, like the police do.
Great video dude! Thanks for letting us know about the book being expensive AF!
This not only has the definitive Spider-Man outside of comics for me, it also has the best portrayal of Morbius to date. That version's backstory may be greatly tweaked, but the spirit of the character is exactly the same.
This series, Spider-Man 1&2, Spectacular and ITSV are peak Spider-Man adaptations imo.
This is what I needed this eve
this video is gonna blow up i’m calling it at 20k
Great video. Thank you 🙏🏾.
When I was a kid I watched this shows reruns on tv 📺 and when I was in high school I re watched it on my phone under my bed when I should’ve slept now I watch it on Disney+ this cartoon is my favourite cartoon series of Spider-Man thank you for this video.
thank you patrons for gettin our Trauma-man to push through and get this one out. and thank you Implicitly Pretentious for sharing it with us free loaders on YT.
This series was my first introduction to Spiderman and damn this video hit my nostalgic memories :,-)
Dude, I love hearing you talk about the show great work.
I never watched this series but I liked the video nevertheless :) Great content dude, I feel that I like and understand a cartoon that I never watched :D
This is next level Spiderman. Possibly better then any of the movies.
90s spider man had such an impact you can tell tobey’s version was based off that and both are some of the best spider man media out there
Loved this show so much! Thank you for this video (finally found the time to watch it 😁)
With X-men getting a continuation, we _need_ a Spider-Man '98! Let Spidey find MJ!
Why did Avi Arad have to have his grubby mitts all over everything Spider-Man from my childhood?
I think it’s really underselling the show to say “It was just a way to sell toys.” It was a great show that made you want to buy their quality toys.
I wish this Spider-Man tas has a reboot. More specifically meaning, a sequel and a revival.
Insidious Six? As in Darth Sidious? The Insidious film franchise? My guess here.
