Jonah has no patience for bigots. I always dig the moments like that where Jameson shows that he's not all bad. Sure, Jonah's a dickhead, but in his own way he's a stand-up guy.
Jonah was Stan Lee’s interpretation of himself while some say Peter was based off (at least visually early on) off of Ditko. Lee element was confirmed because he wrote Jameson with the intention of playing him in a film eventually
The more u mention just how much in these comics old ppl are against young ppl it makes me realize another part of why Spider-Man must’ve been so beloved back then.
14:07 I almost cheered when you said you were gonna go through Gerry Conway's run and keep going with this series! I could listen to and watch these essays for days
Ditko’s Peter is sometimes comes off as that kid, who, if he wasn’t a superhero probably would have turned into something worse…you know what it is, it happens pretty too often nowadays with guys like that…
4:47 Fun Fact: Hoby Brown is also the name of a character in the Spectacular Spider-Man show, the black highschool football player who is part of Flash's friend group-he's the one used for the joke of everyone interrupting him before he can say anything.
I would love to see someone's take on this original version of Peter. I love a lot of the current adaptations, but they've kind of doomed us. So far, the mentality of "we don't need to see his origin story a million times" has prevailed, meaning we likely won't see a proper one for a while. If we don't get the fresh start, it'll be harder to present new takes on the character that are so different from the popular renditions we know
I think in another 10 years or so we will be ready to see the origin story again, and hopefully whoever ends up in charge of that decides to go faithful to the original run in terms of both content and themes.
I don't think that's true at all because there's still a lot of takes on the character that we still haven't seen, the main one being an adjusted actually adult Peter Parker, like what we saw in the JMS Era, he was a full on adult, he had a wife who knew about his identity, Aunt May knew about his identity, he had a job as a teacher (Peter's best job) and things were relatively stable for him but there's still so much storytelling possibilities there and you don't need to start him back at 15 where we see Uncle Ben die again to make it happen, there's some things we can take for granted in the origin and that's ok.
@@Fatboyftw32 I just think that in order to make a character that's drastically different from the somewhat similar cinematic iterations we've seen today (granted they still have their differences) the best way to do it is establish the tone of the new character from the beginning.
So far I think Spectacular was the closest adaptation we've had with Raimi's influence in form of him being a quiet kid not completely erasing his occasional anger bursts. Totally can see how this Peter, quipping, surrounded by girls, being able to talk Flash back unless he's holding back for secret identity's sake and gaining confidence as he he saw himself having a good run while under rubble, would grow into proper adult Spider-Man. We were robbed by the legal issues and man, I wish Sony'd say Screw it and just made a continuation in longer than 44min format
@@Tim_Belay Oh that is the most faithful adaptation of the original 60's comics for sure, if original plans continued we wouldn't quite have seen "Adult" (I mean like the JMS era, where he's like 30) Peter Parker, but I believe that the series was gonna go until Highschool graduation, and then we'd see the cast a tad more grown up in some Direct to DVD specials where they were in college. Such a shame Spectacular was ripped away from us too soon.
Idk what it says about me, but my favorite emotion for Peter to display is anger. Lashing out at a world that keeps him down and batters him. Going too far with retribution and hurting those around him, and eventually clearing his mind and making amends. Peter’s anger always brings growth.
You're doing the lord's work with these Spider-Man retrospectives. Spider-Man fandom has gone so far off the rails on what a classic Stan Lee version of the character is meant to entail and this collection of mini video documentaries is preserving and chronicling that history absolutely beautifully. ...what a #! @*&% pretentious way to comment on this video.
I knew Spider-Man from the Raimi movies as a kid. And when Tasm came out, i kinda followed people when they said Peter Parker is supposed to be a shy and awkward loser, not some confident hothead. That was until i read the Lee/Ditko and into the Lee/Romita and Conway/Kane runs. I was surprised to see how different Peter was in contrast to the Raimi films. Andrew was my favourite version of Spider-Man even tho at the time i thought he was the least accurate, but after reading those runs, it made me love Andrew's version even more since he's in fact probably the most accurate Peter. It's funny how people get so worked up when someone says Tobey is the least comic accurate Peter when they don't even know how comic Peter even acts like. Like damn, i remember that Spider-Man 2 scene where Harry just bitch slaps Peter and Peter takes it like a lil chump. Comic Peter and I bet if Andrew's Peter would definitely fight back if they were in the same situations.
Haven't read the comics myself, but from the videos of this channel it would seem like Peter would flip the fuck out on Harry if he did that lmao. Mostly considering how much shit was going wrong for him at that point in the movie. And I had a very similar experience as you. That good old "Tobey is the best Peter, Andrew is the best Spidey" blah blah blah... It's very interesting to see how that Trilogy wired an entire generation's brain on something that simply isn't true. (Then again, I don't read comics and I don't know how Peter is after these Stan Lee runs, so people might have a point if he acts like Tobey or just too different from Andrew and Tom later on...) But it's cathartic to see the concept of "comic accuracy" bite the worst part of the Raimi fanbase in the ass. I mean the real dicks. Angry, elitist, purist and downright pathetic fans that drool on nostalgia and literally fight over something so silly... I don't think Tobey's version is any worse because it's different, but goddamn it feels like the universe balanced some shit out after realizing all those silly arguments of "tobe comix acurate" are ...just as false.
I agree that Robbie Brown works as reflection of Peter but, I think this can be apply to most of Spider man villains. Just like Peter, they are usually blue collar criminals or victims of scientific accidents, whose goals are just stealing banks or taking over the New York underworld. Some of them even have their personal lifes affected by their role as criminals and have to deal with the consequeces for their actions. A good exemple is Kingpin, who has story that show how him being a crime lord cost him his relationship with his family because Fisk refuse to realize his mistakes and take responsabilitiy for his crimes and the effect they are having on his wife and son, unlike Peter, who tries to balance both his normal and super hero life.
Its time to let Peter Parker be happy. I really don’t get why Spider-Man fans have become so obsessed with this idea that unless Peter is absolutely miserable throughout the entire movie, it’s not a good Spider-Man story. One of my main problems with Spider-Man 2 is that they went too far with showing Spider-Man damaging his personal life. It shouldn’t be so one sided. I’m not saying everything has to be perfect in his life as those hardships help define who he is, but the way some of these fans want to see Peter absolutely depressing is really frustrating.
You’re three part Series on Stan Lee’s work on Spidey and the countless of other videos have given me a brand new insight into this hero. It’s made me reassess who Spider-Man really is and has given me a huge respect for the comics. :))) i’m reading all 100 of stan lee’s work and saving these videoes thanks to you :))
Man I think the MCU writers and Kevin Feige are gonna really benefit from those videos you're making. it's gonna aid them tremendously in writing the next chapter of Peter's life.
Imagine if Miles Morales begins on a similar pattern following Aaron Davis' dark path as an escape from his circumstances until he meets Peter Parker and both learn from each other.
The fact youve only gone through the tip of the iceberg of Peters character really shows how masterfully Peter is written. You didnt mention his guilt complex, responsibility complex and the many dynamics with different characters and much more. Fantastic video
@@Frogman1212 I feel like any "imminent mortality" sense his powers might give Pete would have been desensitized by Aunt May's ceaseless teetering on the brink of death long before the Stacy incident. And once again another excellent video about Spider-Man. Your channel is a treat and I truly believe that out of all of the channels that I have seen do hundreds, if not thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Marvel video essays analyzing the characters' character arcs, their stories, their villains, and how they properly coincide with the heroes, you truly do the best job I've seen a video essayist do, that I've seen, in an extremely long time. I would like to ask if you could do a video analyzing Spider-Man and Black Cat's relationship evolution within the Marvel Comics and how both characters have evolved within the Earth 616 throughout the 60 years that Spider-Man has been around.
That's something I've been telling people for a while. Comic book's Peter Parker is a hot head, every first encounter with another superhero goes to blows because after the other hero refuses to hear his version, Spidey says fuck It and attacks back.
Holy cow, I am so grateful that you are doing this retrospective right now. I have always known that Stan Lee tried to keep his finger on the pulse of social justice, but I had no idea how chillingly accurate this writing was and crushingly still is.

"You want me to bop you with this lollipop, mister?" is the most chilling thing any Satan wannabe can hear. It's worse than having the Saint of Killers stop by for a visit. At least with the Saint your reputation isn't ruined by being beaten by comedy character.
Love it, my god love this era of comics, and seeing it be analyze with the love that it deserves. And also remind everyone of the full circle that Spider-Man almost went through. Love it, this video analyzing the original comics are some of my favorite videos on your channel... But then again im a hardcore Spidey fan, i just love to see good or interesting ways to see the character. And in a world that just remembers certain stuff, this is such a joy. So thanks for this videos.
is there a way where I can find your essays as a pdf file maybe? or any form of files my question is do you publish your scripts somewhere? And thank you for you amazing work man.
I hope the college trilogy builds up to the proper MCU sinister six. If I where to guess these are the candidates I think have a possibility: Vulture - While Adrian doesn’t remember Peter anymore he does remember Spider-Man and he will be out for vengeance since him being outed as a villain had permanently changed his and his families lives. He’s also among Spider-Man’s memorable rogues to be in the Sinister Six, even being one of its founders. Scorpion - To say that he’s out for blood is an UNDERSTATEMENT! Mac wants to slaughter Spider-Man and Homecoming set him up perfectly. Even if he appears as either Scorpion or Venom (considering No Way Home’s post credits scene) he would be the teams most dangerous member. Shocker - While just being a loser villain and having a small part in the movie I still think it could set up Herman for the future. It could develop him further as a character and as a villain. While he would be the least 3-dimensional character of the team he would still make an impact since his gauntlets are MIGHTY dangerous. And while this villain isn’t in the MCU I still think they set him up in No Way Home. Hobgoblin - While many would see Hobgoblin as a discount Green Goblin he has done plenty of things to prove those claims wrong. While I definitely believe it won’t be Ned (since it would be for no reason) I still think Hobgoblin could be a real asset to the team. Maybe he’s the one to build the gear some of his other team mates will use like Vulture wings, scorpion tails and vibro gauntlets. If you wonder how I think No Way Home set up Hobgoblin it’s by Green Goblin leaving the goblin helmet behind. It could take from the comics on how he found green goblin’s equipment and used it to become a supervillain. Why I don’t think it’s Ned is because he has no reason to be evil and even if they use the “brainwashed ” plot it would still be out of nowhere and a stupid coincidence that of all people Hobgoblin chose it just HAPPENED to be Ned. If Ned turns evil I bet it would feel really forced and out of nowhere.
Since Spider man is going to have a new trilogy in the MCU, I hope the final movie take some inspirations from Amazing Spider Man 100, showing Peter having a battle in his mind and developing as hero while he reflects about his memories and all he went through during this six movies (making the both the old and the new trilogy a huge tribute to Stan Lee's run). Maybe they could take some inspiration from Spectacular Spider man and finally do the "black suit saga" right, with Peter finding and becoming corrupt by the suit in the end of the first movie, or during the second, then in the third he could understand what the symbiote actually is and the two have a mental duel, with Peter defeating the alien with the memories of Aunt May and all his friends, who inspiring him to overcome his doubts and anxiety (represent by the symbiote).
7:30 A lot better than the first Amazing Spider-Man film where before he dies after helping Peter stop Lizard George Stacy tells him to break up with Gwen to protect her only for Peter to get back with her at the end ultimately causing her death in the 2nd film.
Have you read any of Dan Slott's run? People were very critical of it because they thought it made peter look like a jerk but peter has always been juavanile, whiny, self-loathing the whole point is that when he's spiderman he can put that aside and do what's right
Dude difference is that in slott he acted like narcissist at extreme he did mistakes and later tried to justify it nick Spencer run was great Until it wasn't Why nick WHY WHY DID YOU BETRAY US
Yayy new video! Absolutely love your these Spider-Man video essay things that you've been doing on the comic runs! I'm really disappointed what they did to Hobie Brown in the comics because his version of Prowler is far more compelling than Aaron Davis
@@MrHomelessHobos Let's say I just want to read something to pass the time, a good story but I don't have to dedicate more than 100 issues of my life to it either, meh, maybe I'll just drop everything and better go read Silk
In my universe it’s Aaron that’s the original Prowler. What happens is that just like in the comics Spider-Man encounters Prowler and fights him multiple times but also learns about him as a person. He learns about Aaron’s strained relationship with his brother or Aaron’s moral code. One time Spidey encounters Aaron on the roof. Aaron confirms that he isn’t looking for a fight anytime soon as he’s processing the fact that he’s an uncle (setting up Miles Morales years before his debut) and Peter happily congratulate him. The only difference however is that he somewhat fails in what Peter succeeds in mentally and that’s sadly what keeps him as a villain. It isn’t until Miles gets involved after he becomes Spider-Man that he truly changes. And yes Hobbie also appears but just as a cat burglar with a costume that references him being the prowler in the comics.
Y'know, it would be kind of hilarious if Pete's first hundred issues had all been him actually in Hell being tormented by an elaborate illusion created by Mephisto after he died from that radioactive spider bite. Not quite sure why the Red Guy would come up with such an implausible scenario for some random damned soul or what Pete would have done to merit damnation (I suppose original sin would do for Christians) but it would certainly be a shocking twist. And no matter how badly it was handled it still wouldn't be the worst Spider-man story with Mephisto in it. :)
Please do Dick Grayson and his development from happy go lucky Robin to depressed and figuring himself Grayson to self assured and confident leader Nightwing
What's so inspiring about the character of Spider-man is his ability to endure. To go through these hardships, to have that anger, to be pushed to his breaking point, and in the end, making it out a stronger than he was before.
Also his ability to just keep getting up after taking insane punishment sometimes like sometimes the villains really do put a beating on him

At least with the Saint your reputation isn't ruined by being beaten by comedy character.
3:02 Spider-Man 1's beginning, Spider-Man 2 kinda, Spider-Man 3 Emo Peter cathartic to me even as a kid. Peter even gets the staff job
"Peter angrily sleeps" is the greatest Spider-Man blurb period.
Loving these essays
Good luck man. Finding everything from 100-875 my thoughts a prays on with you
Your channel is one of the best in youtube, your content is amazing!
Keep it up, my man!
Jesus Christ man, your content is fucking amazing
Chat peter don't leave me nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I hope the college trilogy builds up to the proper MCU sinister six.
If I where to guess these are the candidates I think have a possibility:
Vulture - While Adrian doesn’t remember Peter anymore he does remember Spider-Man and he will be out for vengeance since him being outed as a villain had permanently changed his and his families lives.
I think that would be great. Maybe we can get a new version of Doc Ock as the leader
Song is Death With Dignity ;)
At least it didn’t end with Trauma 😂
Great Video BTW
7:30 A lot better than the first Amazing Spider-Man film where before he dies after helping Peter stop Lizard George Stacy tells him to break up with Gwen to protect her only for Peter to get back with her at the end ultimately causing her death in the 2nd film.
It has been so fun! Keep on making things you like🔥❤️
Have you read any of Dan Slott's run? People were very critical of it because they thought it made peter look like a jerk but peter has always been juavanile, whiny, self-loathing the whole point is that when he's spiderman he can put that aside and do what's right
Dude difference is that in slott he acted like narcissist at extreme he did mistakes and later tried to justify it nick Spencer run was great
Until it wasn't Why nick WHY WHY DID YOU BETRAY US
@@lolxd3337 blame editorial
people are mad that he acted like a man-child since he was supposed to go thru so much growth since the 60s-70s now all the way to the 2010s
So THIS is the period that the Brand New Day team love so much.
@implicitly pretentious hopefully you’ll do an analysis on ultimate spider man
Love your videos especially the Spider-Man ones keep up the great work
babe wake up! new implicitly pretentious spider man video just dropped!
Your videos are extremely well put together!
Yayy new video! Absolutely love your these Spider-Man video essay things that you've been doing on the comic runs! I'm really disappointed what they did to Hobie Brown in the comics because his version of Prowler is far more compelling than Aaron Davis
Great video
Do you think you could do a similar retrospective on Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis?
He'll get there.
@@ConcernedAlien There are so many Spider-Man runs by so many different writers that deserve their own retrospectives.
No one:
Not a single soul:
RUclips out of nowhere: Spider-Man in hell
Uff, now I don't know whether to read Ultimate, JMS Run or stay with the originals no matter how difficult they are to read
why not both
@@MrHomelessHobos Because I get stressed when I read several different series no matter how silly it sounds 😔
@@_Zarick_ No its all good, we all got our quirks.
@@MrHomelessHobos Let's say I just want to read something to pass the time, a good story but I don't have to dedicate more than 100 issues of my life to it either, meh, maybe I'll just drop everything and better go read Silk
Amazing, or should I say spectacular? Anyway I loved this series of video essays, thank you.
Great video !!
Maybe some time can you do Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle's run on Detective Comics from #583 to 621
Yo love those Essentials just gotten 9 books of them and up to Vol4 of Spidey.
Indeed. I can't wait for the 80s Web of Spiderman
7:01 what is this music called?
Wait... is Bully Maguire a more accurate Spidy?
And Andrew's Spider-Man.
It’s here
Y'know, it would be kind of hilarious if Pete's first hundred issues had all been him actually in Hell being tormented by an elaborate illusion created by Mephisto after he died from that radioactive spider bite.
Spider-Man's prison reform arc is still not solved but got worse even between with the case of Calif Browder
I'd really like to hear your thoughts on Nick Spencer's run.
Huhuhuhu..."blow my stack"
Good job
I'd like to see Peter begin as a douche bag and not as a quirky geek. Would be cool. Andrew Garfield was the closest
3:33 has Harry been at the Nutella jar again or has he grown a mustache 🤔
i feel like miles in the mcu should be inspired by the prowler mentioned here as well as his uncle aaron’s prowler
So spider or the man leads into morbin time? 12:32
Please do Dick Grayson and his development from happy go lucky Robin to depressed and figuring himself Grayson to self assured and confident leader Nightwing
I thought you were going to talk about OMD and that ordeal.
So gerry Conway run of spiderman now
That final quite from Stan Lee is now no longer an interest iung insight. It's common knowledge.
Do peacemaker show
I need to know the name of the song from the beginning or I might die
Bro you have a severe spider man problem
