The Flash Thompson in this series is seconded only to the 'tasm' one, and it's because they're not just brain-dead doofuses. They start like that, sure, but they grow to be empathetic and key to Peter's character growth.
As much as I love ITSV, Spectacular remains my favorite iteration of Classic Spidey. For me, it's the definitive Peter Parker, the same way B:TAS and S:TAS defined my understanding of Batman and Superman, far more than the comics ever did.
Sony still has the TV rights for Spider man,but the catch on Sony’s part is that each episode has to be at least 44 minutes long. There was a contract leak a few years ago that confirmed that.
The Raimi movies and the Spectacular Spider-man serie shaped the man I am today. No matter what, I always try to do what's best even if it means I lose. We can't always win but we can keep trying.
Raimi focused a bit too much in Peter Parker side , I never felt a balance like the Spectacular one, tbh, Spiderverse is much better in terms of movies but if you are saying which is the Best Spider-Man media then there are only two - Insomniacs Spider-Man PS4 and Spectacular Spider-Man (not the 90s animated series, it’s way overrated, I watched 90s animated series but after watching Spectacular, it just seems very goofy and a let down compared to its successor) You Raimi fans need to stop idolizing those Spider-Man movies too much.
Yeah Raimi was the best, spectacular is overrated and their fans are kinda toxic (like the guy above me) but honestly I prefer the 90's cartoon. It's the most comic accurate thought I wish it were more violent haha. Raimis spiderman is great because he's one of the only adaptations to feel like the older comics before they stoped writing peter as a dork, and the movie story wise are just better than anything that came after it, making the successors look inferior by comparison.
You know what? The partnership between Disney and Marvel was not worth it if it meant the ending of this show. The spider-man “home” movies while entertaining, pale in comparison.
I just binge-watched this gem a couple weeks ago and boyyy, it's so frustrating to know it got cancelled, especially after the second season ended on a cliffhanger. This series was way better than any of the Spider-Man movies.
just rewatched the whole series. It's still so damn good, I'm so bummed the shows that followed it can't come anywhere near its level, on every level. It will never not hurt.
This is the most definitive version of Spider-Man outside of the comics and btw I recommend you go watch Spectacular Spider-Man on Netflix espically if you never watched the show like me I finished with season 1 yesterday
Honestly I'd argue that this is THE definitive version. The comics have a lot of brilliant storylines. . . but they also have absurd editorial incompetence like One More Day, uneven storylines like the Clone Saga, and its lingering aftermath. Spectacular is tightly focused and works really well.
I love this critique. It talks about how good it deals with the characters and the duality of Peter's identity as well as how Peter shifts over the story and what stays the same. The one thing I wish was included in this critique would be a breakdown of the various arcs mentioned. I would definitely want to see you talk about the best version of the symbiote origin we have ever gotten, as well as how the arcs separate and intertwine.
Spectacular SpiderMan is the main reason I love MCU SpiderMan. They deliver similar messages through different mediums. We can argue on which did it better, but that it just subjective. Overall they both show that Peters actions have consequences on either side of his spectrum: the hero, or the high schooler. In the MCU, Peter ditched the homecoming dance and Liz to stop Vulture, and in Spectacular, fighting Lizard ultimately resulted in him losing his internship. In these cases it is showed that good choices won't always work out for personal gain, but both Peters did it anyway.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Sorry but mcu Spider-Man is NOTHING like spectacular Spider-Man. There’s a video on RUclips that explains why. But basically consequences and uncle Ben are the main reasons and unlike spectacular, mcu Spidey doesn’t seem to have either. Also, yes, peter has choices in the mcu (choosing to leave liz and the decathlon team) but never faces any real consequences. Liz just says a few words then leaves. Does it really mean anything to him? No, he moves straight onto mj😒
@@gingercat5996 can’t people like you just accept the opinions of others without laughing in their faces? It’s toxic “fans” like you that are starting to make me hate Spider-Man in general.
MCU is a poor excuse of a spider-man. Bottom line: Spectacular did the character better. One thing that doesn’t make sense, Fury having to convince Peter to join in the fight. Peter should not need convincing. The character that is Spider-Man doesn’t want to be Spider-Man but does it anyway because of responsibility. He doesn’t stand there and do nothing because the last time he did that his uncle died. If he does it again, it will be someone else. Back in Homecoming he ditched Liz just to stop the Vulture; that is being Spider-Man; he let to to handle a responsibility. That movie seemed to characterize Peter that way so shouldn’t that mean that Peter will always do that like when talking to Fury? Peter should get into the fight because he knows he has the responsibility and would do it regardless; he shouldn’t need convincing and considering that what they established of what he would do ditching Liz to do the right thing but doesn’t do the same thing in Far From Home, that’s a red flag right there. Disney’s handle of the character Spider-Man is purely the worst; it’s fucking terrible. You think that this example I gave you doesn't prove you wrong about MCU Spidey's conflicted morals?
@@rnspurgn3015 yeah, you’re right😔 sorry. I mean I appreciate that it’s his opinion and I should respect it, but I just have such a deep love for the character and feel like the mcu had such great potential and people are just ignoring and settling for the half baked Spider-Man that we got, u know?
@@gingercat5996 thank you for showing maturity. I get where all the hate for him is coming from but I just don’t let it bother me. All the live action interpretations of Spider-Man still have the core elements of the character.

Implicitly Pretentious when making a spiderman video: "Alright, let's do this one last time.." I am not trying to be rude! I love your spiderman video essays and your channel as a whole!
I think it's really endearing about Peter that regardless of how bad his life gets on the Super Hero side or the Pedestrian side he's able to find even one thing to keep himself hopeful again and continue moving forward with his life. It's very relatable that he has really terrible moments that emotionally beat him senseless but finding something that is going good and using that as a source to inspire himself to keep improving and growing as a person and as a hero.
Had the show continued, Gwen was most likely going to be killed off. Not only did her design evolve to match the comics, but over the years, the writers have talked about what would have happened to the characters during Seasons 3-5, and Gwen is the only once they didn't talk about.
I wish they make a comic, movie, show where gwen doesn’t die and peter stay as Spider-Man and they have a relationship together and see if gets better or worse compare to MJ
It's kind of ironic that what killed Spectacular Spider-Man is what eventually killed Amazing Spider-Man: A financial choice that resulted in Sony folding under pressure. Only difference is Sony chose to kill TSSM to elevate TASM, and TASM was killed to elevate the Home Series.
The fact that there isn't so form of continuation of this series whether it be a 3rd season, animated film, or even comic is such a crime, one if my favorite interpretations of spider-man

Can you imagine if Sony wasn’t limiting Disney and they could openly show the MCU Uncle Ben is an avid die hard Captain America fan, it would be so perfect.
Being in multiple fandoms can sometimes be genuinely hilarious... To the fans of superhero cartoons, Greg Weisman is the universaly beloved co-creator of The Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice, adored by everyone. To the fans of Magic The Gathering story, he's the guy who wrecked many years of great storytelling by writing two really awful books (that also include quite a bit of biphobia). To Bionicle fans, he's just the guy who wrote The Mask of Light movie. Truly the polarising figure of our time.

To this day, I can't watch Season 2...not because it wasn't good but because it was *excellent* and ended on a cliffhanger only to find out it wasn't coming back. Hearing the showrunners' plans for Season 3 and beyond was almost painful. If they had been allowed to finish their vision, I'm convinced that TSS would have rivaled Batman the Animated Series as the best superhero cartoon ever.
9:45 to be honest, Im sorta glad they decided to end it on a cliffhanger/with things still open ended. recently, I have seen a multitude of shows that where forced to end early/cancelled prematurely and their response is to rush the story and ending they had in mind, and to be honest I feel it actually worsens the view of the show overall (it's like you take your time crafting the begining and middle of an essay but then just go and finish it in 2 sentences, it makes things feel wrong when you view it by itself). I really feel if you have a thought out plan for a show but you get cancelled before you can complete it then it's better to leave it where it's at because that way, if fortunes in your favor, your show may get revived/brought back and can continue it they way you intended (like samurai jack)

That bit at the end of Weisman breaking down their plans legitimately broke my heart. They had it all figured so beautifully man... :(
That interview at the end hurts cause that sounds so cool
The Flash Thompson in this series is seconded only to the 'tasm' one, and it's because they're not just brain-dead doofuses. They start like that, sure, but they grow to be empathetic and key to Peter's character growth.
As much as I love ITSV, Spectacular remains my favorite iteration of Classic Spidey. For me, it's the definitive Peter Parker, the same way B:TAS and S:TAS defined my understanding of Batman and Superman, far more than the comics ever did.
What about the batman 2004 version of bruce?
My hope is that this is either brought back as part of Sony’s Spider-verse franchise or that they expand their deal with Disney to include tv
Disney have TV they don't ha e the actual rights too spectacular itself
@@ryan9877 yes that’s why I’m saying it would be a further expansion of songs deal with Disney
Sony still has the TV rights for Spider man,but the catch on Sony’s part is that each episode has to be at least 44 minutes long. There was a contract leak a few years ago that confirmed that.
While I still wish the show continued, there’s no doubt it ended well with a tragic but bittersweet bang.
@@spider-man6932 wtf are u on about?
You know what?
The partnership between Disney and Marvel was not worth it if it meant the ending of this show.
The spider-man “home” movies while entertaining, pale in comparison.
I just binge-watched this gem a couple weeks ago and boyyy, it's so frustrating to know it got cancelled, especially after the second season ended on a cliffhanger. This series was way better than any of the Spider-Man movies.
just rewatched the whole series. It's still so damn good, I'm so bummed the shows that followed it can't come anywhere near its level, on every level. It will never not hurt.
Bring back Weisman. The man has a great understanding of the character
This is the most definitive version of Spider-Man outside of the comics and btw I recommend you go watch Spectacular Spider-Man on Netflix espically if you never watched the show like me I finished with season 1 yesterday
It’s not on Netflix in some countries.
@@rnspurgn3015 In my country it is available
@@turbotax7505 it’s not on Netflix in America 😢
@@rnspurgn3015 it is now
Honestly I'd argue that this is THE definitive version. The comics have a lot of brilliant storylines. . . but they also have absurd editorial incompetence like One More Day, uneven storylines like the Clone Saga, and its lingering aftermath. Spectacular is tightly focused and works really well.
Introducing Captain America and the X-men in future seasons sounds amazing I can’t believe we never got to see it
Clicked so freaking FAST
GOTTA GO FAST
I remember watching and loving this show when i was 4.
I just finished watching the show for the first time, this timing is so perfect. Amazing show btw
Hey man, critique or not, I’m glad that this show is still talked about. My favorite cartoon of all time. I hope it eventually gets a continuation. If not, then I hope I manage to make enough fanart and animations to keep the show alive.
Watch this for the first time in it's entirety this year. Long live this Masterpiece
Implicitly Pretentious when making a spiderman video: "Alright, let's do this one last time.."
I am not trying to be rude!
#bringbackspecatcularspiderman, it worked for the snydercut, we should try this too

"So in conclusion, it's a good show. I like it" this gave me a chuckle. Loved the vid!
I love the versions of Spider-Man that understand the burden of the mask and sacrificing the slow life for the one he can find solace in.
The one thing I loved was how the episodes connected like how he wore his black suit for like four episodes
The characters in this show had personality, while the ones in the Ultimate Spider-Man were just bland.
did you see the 2017 this one boreds me.
The fact that there isn't so form of continuation of this series whether it be a 3rd season, animated film, or even comic is such a crime, one if my favorite interpretations of spider-man
Simply put, fantastic video and analysis. Perfectly sums up some of the reason why I love the show and hearing Greg talk about future episodes made me miss it even more
Hearing the creators talk about what they had planned breaks my heart.
Can you imagine if Sony wasn’t limiting Disney and they could openly show the MCU Uncle Ben is an avid die hard Captain America fan, it would be so perfect.
Yeah, they should've continue the story. Shame, just like Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes.
That sounded so cool! I was so disappointed when it ended.
The show just came out in Netflix in the uk and I couldn’t be happier! I’ve been watching it lately and it’s just as good as I remember. Great analysis!
If this got to finish its story im sure it would have become as iconic as Batman the Animated Series.
I’m gonna guess your major is creative writing.
The BrownTable has a really good video on the cancelled 3 of Spectacular Spider-Man
This show was beautiful, the theme song, the design everything was perfect
I remember binging this in my childhood using youtube XD

Can’t wait to see how Spectacular Spider-Man’s Peter Parker is doing in Across The Spider-Verse.

This is hands down, my fav iteration of Spider-Man. Thank you for shinning a light on a massively underrated classic.
We need a season 3. If it does ever happen they will finally have the rights to use other Marvel characters.
With the apparent partnership between Sony and Marvel, I can hope that they have the sense to resurrect Spectacular Spider-Man on Disney+ or something. If he can do it, I'm perfectly okay with Weisman splitting time between the also excellent Young Justice and Spectacular Spider-Man.
Spectacular Spiderman is better than breaking bad
Hearing you talking about Greg Weisman in a positive light is so wild because I only know him from the G-d awful MtG books
Did this man really say the Raimi films don’t have consequences?
He was specifically referring to the fact that all the villains died and were forgotten in the next movie except Norman.
@@joshheralal8758 there were only three films so 'all the villains apart from norman' is literally just doc ock
(as there's no Spider-Man 4 for the villains of 3 to be remembered/forgotten in)
@@joshheralal8758 “All the villains” = 1 villain: Doc Ock. And even though he’s not mentioned again, the lessons Peter learned through Ock are carried through to the third film. Not to mention that it’s because of Doc Ock that both Harry and Mary Jane know Peter is Spider-Man, so his influence is hardly forgotten.
@@OneAndOnlyYesMan Not to mention that Doc Ock, being someone who was redeemed in the end, had little relevance to be brought up in the next movie when the new villains were nothing like him at all. And was Vulture mentioned in Far From Home at all? I don't recall him being brought up at all.

The song was the best thing ever!!!!!
For many people who need to know. There is a group of people making a fan made season 3. There is a discord if you search it up. And so far what they have created is really great.
Phenomenal analysis on a truly perfect show. I'm watching it right now and it's every bit as perfect as when I first watched it. I would love to see an analysis on The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Avengers Assemble. Hell, even The Ultimate Spider-Man.
Such an underrated series. Probably my favorite spider-man cartoon behind the 90s one. shame it only got two seasons.
I will forever hate disney for killing this show to replace it with that drake bell trash and the even worse follow up
Have a soft spot for the 90’s animated series, the theme song is much better in that one and it did have a lot of storylines from the Romita years inervoven quite well, but this is Ditko’s Spidey in it’s essence. A very good adaption. Too bad it just got cancelled, yet again Disney f*cking it up.

Maaaan, I never watched this show as a kid, probably cause I didn't have/never saw the channel it was on. Years later, I finally gave it a chance assuming it was just hyped up and overrated. BRO. IT'S THAT GOOD. What a good time.
10:52 you can see how upset is Josh Keaton

you are currently my favorite video essay youtuber keep it up man your supper underrated
You know what would make me happy, if disney, marvel and Sony hire the crew that started spectacular spiderman for them to finish it. And possibly add more seasons
