I've been living in Utah for 8 years. The home across the street from me was for sale at $150,000 before covid. Now it's $555,000. It wasn't selling before covid. It's not going to sell now. All this to say, I hope the housing crisis gets fixed soon.
I moved here for a better job opportunity 6 years ago. My biggest con I’ve experienced after relocating here is the high cost of housing. My new job allowed me to make the most money I’ve ever made in my life but I did not qualify for any apartments I’ve looked at. One time I barely qualified for an apartment but it was small and overpriced. Finding affordable housing is a challenge especially when you’re single and living alone.
Yes, if you're in Miami and you're not paying attention to a Utah, it's absolutely rising here and it's completely useless to compare it to specific cities on the coasts like Miami, New York, San Francisco, etc. Something doesn't have to be compared to another city, but rather should be compared to the market where one lives and earns a living. Lastly, I'd appreciate a little more respect in your choice of words. Have a great day!
I’m a bit confused. I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve said nothing rude about my comment to your video. All I’ve said was that the cost of living in Utah is a little high. I’m not from Miami or any city on the west or east coast. I moved here from Las Vegas about 6 years ago.
@mariog1982, I'm so sorry, that response was for the other person who commented on this thread (@XCapital28), not for you! Thank you so much for sharing!
Moved here from Idaho in January and I think you are pretty spot on with most of these. The other con I would add is housing affordability. We paid the same amount for just a lot here that we paid for an entire house in Idaho.
You are spot on Annelise! Thank you so much for your comment and yes... home affordability is a crisis and I'm super passionate about helping create a solution
Utah is actually almost right on the middle of the pack when ranking all states in terms of data around gun ownership. States like Montana, Wyoming and Idaho are all at or near the top of the lists ranking guns per capita, total guns, gun ownership, etc.
My experience in Utah was AWESOME. I spent a few weeks visiting a friend north of SLC and liked the atmosphere. I'm in Houston right now and am desperate to leave. I applied to a couple of jobs in SLC via referral, so fingers crossed.
Spent a week in the Ogden area for work, definitely considering selling my Midwest home and building out in the mountains if interest rates rates drop. I love the the upper midwest, but UT was different.
I know it's not exactly your fault, and I don't mind the concept of this video or people moving to Utah, but young people who grew up in Utah are literally unable to buy homes here because of how much prices have risen in the past 10 year. Even with a decent job I can only afford a mortgage for a house that costs about $200,000, and unless you go wayyyyy out into the desert the minimum price on even a condo or fixer-upper is $300,000. I would have to make $80-90K a year just to qualify to buy anything on the wasatch front, and I make just over half that which is really good for someone my age. Unless you have rich family or get really lucky, you're pretty much screwed trying to afford any housing here. If you have older children who are getting closer to the age of moving out DO NOT MOVE TO UTAH! Your kids will be stuck with you forever unless they're really successful.
You absolutely nailed this comment. I'm really passionate about Utah's housing affordability crisis and I'm really looking to get involved at the highest level possible to hopefully be able to provide solutions and make a change. This is Utah’s greatest threat to its success in the future in my opinion.
Come live in Hawaii and I tell you what is expensive. $6 milk, average house is over a million. Almost $5 gas. I laugh when people complain about cost of living. Hawaii is the number 1 for highest cost of living!
@scottdsteele there's not much more room to grow proper SFHs within the wasatch valleys. Setting aside the affordability issue, if people want growth here to never stop, then the result will be piling on top of each other like sardines. When it's all single childless people living in pods, it won't be the Utah you describe here anymore
Man I hear you, try coming from nj where they only give out part time jobs and charge people 1300 a month for rent. Give me a a full time job with decent lay and I won’t be complaining about anything lol.

If you are considering to making the move to Utah. Utah public schools can not fill the teacher requirement leaving those roles to be filled by Substitute teachers that do not need certification the average pay of those teacher is $16.52 per hour a little bit less than the fast food worker makes in most places in Utah County. Considering the average rent is well above 2000 per month. Who are you getting to teach your kids-safe guard your kids? The average Superintendent salary in Utah is $115,411 as of July 29, 2024, but the range typically falls between $96,804 and $127,479. So people are being paid to NOT teach, but actual people in class rooms-size does matter in Utah struggling for the highest in the nation- is quite a bit less. The average math teacher in Utah is $54,169. Which means they can not afford to buy a house in Utah. Utah does try to say a lot of what they are paying-but in fact many teachers can often be seen at Walmart and target -Dollar Tree buying supplies for kids. As of Aug 6, 2024, the average hourly pay for a Prison Guard in Utah is $17.30 an hour. Also that prison guard is full time. Many teachers are required to have at least one to two other jobs besides teaching to make ends meet.
Utah just cracked the top 10 for highest starting salaries for teachers and is 9% behind the national average for all teachers pay. Yes, these numbers still aren't enough to buy a home. For a teacher, they would need a spouse or partner to also earn in order to do so. Inflation, the exorbitant amount of money created in response to the pandemic along with under supply and hyper demand for housing here in Utah has made this the greatest threat to our states future
@@scottdsteele you are saying we are failing with flying colors. If your son has a job and has to live in your basement to make things work and can not support his family on his own, that is not what we aspire too. If you want men and in the class room, we have to make this profession work for men to show boys how to be professional men. The football coach is usually the highest paid teacher in the school. Let's show those moral values. Things cost money and so far we in Utah we want free stuff from other people. Because when we do not pay proper rates for the work that is done, we steal labor. We build neighborhoods without grass in the front yard. Playgrounds that no one would play in. We build places that it is unsafe for kids to ride bikes in, so that we can jam more housing to rent out in. This means the person that is your police officer in the middle of the night doesn't have the middle class upbringing you want them too. The doctor lives in another state. A bifurcated society. Haves and have nots. We are a poverty creation machine we just have to wait 10 years. Short term gains long term pains.
That's sad my husband is a Dutch maths teacher and we want to move to utah but he earns 125k in Australia which can afford us to buy a small townhouse in a nicer area in our city. Which would be the minimum we would expect. Especially with the state having such traditional values I would prefer to stay at home or work a little from home. I'd expect a high school maths teacher to be able to cover the bills. It's a real bummer. We are devout Christians who love mountains and wish to exercise the second amendment.
Do you serve the whole state? As a couple that are both remote workers, internet speeds are paramount. Would like to see more information on this feature of different locations.
Yes, I / we do....I have a small team and other than a few small towns to the east and southeast, we cover all 5 metro areas plus the entire Wasatch Back and beyond. Speaking to your point on internet speeds, Utah ranks #2 out of the 50 states for internet access... and as for speed we're in the middle of the pack ranked @ #30 with an average speed of 314 mbps. As for the best cities in Utah... here they are: #1 Mapleton #2 Murray #3 Roy #4 Syracuse Beyond this, Salt Lake City also has great infrastructure that includes Google Fiber. Google Fiber is the fastest provider in Utah followed by XFINITY (Comcast)
@@scottdsteele If you are in Utah or SLC county you almost always have access to a fiber solution. If you get out to rural areas it gets patchier in terms of coverage, though I somehow never lose cell service.
This is how every enjoyable state has become, it’s not just Utah. Basically any state that has some desire to it has been crowded and prices have gone up. People are no longer staying in their old hometown in which they grew up, more people are moving out and relocating somewhere they want to live
Seems like only developers love the growth, others are trying to find the minimum amount of open spaces where I live, so they can stand it, and other people won’t get mad, and no one loves the traffic, it is dangerous, I get scared as a rider….the whole way, if I have to ride on the freeway. The smaller canyons are crowded now. I do not breathe as well as I did where I grew up….because I am nervous of the air. And in my area, they are getting people to prepare for the big one. I won’t say the rest, but there are growing typical big city issues where I live.
I see people talking about the prices on housing but that's all over the USA, I can careless about housing I'll move out there and live in my van especially escape the damn heat in Arizona.....
I moved to SLC 10 years ago from Chicago. I disagree having culture as a pro... A major con that you missed is lower than average wages it used to be not a major con but as housing costs increased wages remain lower than average. I also think lack of professional sports teams as a con. I feel like a smaller con not mentioned is the lack of affordable flight options at the SLC airport due to no competition and not many international options as compared to Denver or other bigger interior airports.
Yes, wages are lower but they are on the rise but people will not realize that unless they change jobs frequently. For lower wage jobs they are not rising much. As for housing, it's become ridiculous for sure and something needs to change. Lack of pro sports...I get it, with just the Jazz and Real Salt Lake it's been lacking but we just got an NHL team and very likely getting an MLB Team to be announced in the next handful of years. That along with the recently announced 2034 Winter Olympics, Utah is becoming a serious sports city even though this will take the next decade to play out.
CON: Medical care. There is a real deficit of medical providers/choice if you live anywhere outside of SLC. It's frustrating. Most new patients it's 2-3 months just to get in the first time, (it's the first opening that's available!) Even Googling doctors, PA's, or NP's-- they're all listed with SLC office addresses. And UT has some unique to the state laws with medication and prescriptions. The dumbest one: I need a prescription EVERY single year for my glasses. Most other states I lived in, the eye glasses script is good for 2-3 years. Anyone with healthcare needs, beware.
You forgot the massive amount of nats and mosquitoes as a con. I came from Miami and never experienced anything like the amount of bugs I see here. It’s almost to the point where I want to move 😂
Where are you experiencing this? Utah is so much better than most states due to its arid climate. Unless you live right next to water, it's almost never an issue at all.
I’m near Ogden just 30 mins north of salt lake. I’ve experienced terrible bug issues where I’m at. I went to antelope island last week and it was also a night mare even with bug spray. I love the outdoors here compared to Miami (we only have beaches lol) i just need to carry a can of spray to help 😂
@natefiggs Got it! Yes, right next to the Great Salt Lake is absolutely terrible especially right now at this time of year! My wife and I drove to Antelope Island last year at precisely this time of year when those gnats and bugs have hatched and it was almost apocalyptic and our black suv was plastered. Outside of this spot, or anywhere right next to water, Utah is super easy for bugs like this. You might want to live just a little further from the Great Salt Lake
I've been traveling here and there for 22 years. I've been to every single state except for Hawaii. Betty Jean Eadie will tell you that the slightest thing that anyone does effects the world for better or worse. As much traveling as I've done, my comments carry more weight behind them than than Rick Steves and Samantha Brown COMBINED!
If you are outdoorsy you'll love it! Between the bad air quality, inversion, and general higher altitude thinner air you can feel the struggle to breathe even more on a beautiful hike which could easily be too hot, too cold, or both hr to hr. If you came to enjoy the greatest snow on earth you can enjoy it up close and personal on your driveway, car, sidewalks, and even in your face! With winters so cold the bitter air can give you brain freeze. Good times for all those who love being cold and wet. It's fun digging your car out when you get stuck or slide off the road. Like sledding but in a heavy metal vehichle. You might get killed, you might not, it's anyone's guess....
@@scottdsteele sure if you want to make sales and pretend there are no cons. I've lived here my whole life and while it can be pretty it's really giving an influencer highlight reel or sales pitch pov to pretend it's all picturesque hiking and skiing when it's not. The reality is a pretty harsh contrast if no one prepared you for it, especially for those coming from states like Arizona, California etc that aren't used to the crazy weather shifts. Utah is struggling right now in a lot of ways based on the people who live and work here and have for years. Some stupid biased articles come out nad try to say otherwise but they aren't the ones struggling to find affordable housing or buy groceries. If people want to move here that's fine but they should get an honest review on what it's like to live here....probably from people that don't profit off of those people moving here
Have you even watched my videos? I DO point out the negatives... the Pros and the Cons. Where in the world do I pretend there are no cons? You can literally see the video on the Front of my RUclips channel where I talk about the Pros & CONS... it's right there as the very first video that people see when they visit my channel. I've lived here my entire life as well and I work with people moving here very frequently and there are Pros and Cons to everywhere, everything and everyone.
I get it Chris! Thanks for sharing and yeah... I'm not here to flare up any conversations around politics or religion, I just want to help answer the questions that people have about living here
@scottdsteele Actually watched this video for an answer to this exact question. Reformed baptist really wanting to know the reality of living in SLC. Will neighbors be polite but not friendly? Wave from afar but not invited to bbqs kind of thing? Shunned once they find out we're not in?
Thanks for sharing!! I, as a real estate agent, cannot talk about certain things at length for to fair housing laws. Plus, I'm from Utah and I have bias. You may find some very helpful perspective from a friend of mine who actually started a a RUclips channel to learn about the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints (Mormoms) and he does it as an outsider and a pastor of an evangelical congregation. He even moved here eventually right to my neighborhood in Daybreak. His name is Jeff and his channel is called "Hello Saints" Let me know if his insight helps you..I really think that it will for sure
Awesome. That's just a group of enthusiasts that may or may not be a little too loud with their hobby and interest. These buggies are street legal and they do this alot on Fridays I believe. Great video idea too.... I'll have to do that as soon as I can
Out of curiosity, does anyone here know how strong the earthquake standards are for new construction in the state? I trust a major one is coming if they're prepping the temple for it. But I never heard talk of earthquakes when I was living there for college, so idk if the state is well-prepared for it, overall.
Utah and the western U.S. in general are prone to earthquakes and we do have the a Wasatch fault running 240 miles and is the longest fault line in the U.S. and we are building here with this in mind. There are too many things and variables to list here but along with the soil, the structures and the engineering that is behind their design is in preparation to withstand the more serious predictions for a future earthquake.
I have a couple of neighbors that are originally from places in the Midwest, and they actually say the opposite thing about Utahns being friendly. Maybe we think we are friendly here, but we might not be as much as we think.
personal question, do you make videos like these to convince people to come to Utah. and by scheduling a call to get to "know us", would that be when you'd be like.. hey "I'm a realtor and i know where to get you the best houses for the best prices!" thus you benefiting in the long run. because if this is your goal, i got to tell you its smart as heck. and GOD Bless you for that. i just really hope you arent one that rips people off 🙂
I'm not sure how in the world I would ever be able to "rip people off" let alone convince people to move here. I'm 100% transparent in what I'm doing and that begins and ends with me answering people's specific questions around moving to and living in Utah and it just so happens that I love doing it. I'm also a huge fan of my home state of Utah and my audience is people looking to relocate here or people who live here. I'm also 100% transparent in who I am as a real estate expert and agent and that I would love to be their real estate resource of choice. Simplified... client attraction (not selling or convincing or ripping off) through value giving service using relevant content to answer people's questions.
The increase in out of staters is increasing crime. All are welcome, but embrace the local culture, and please don't bring the crime and other problems from the state you left.
@Drew-hu7hb People relocate for SO many reasons and I love people from any state... or country so long as they uphold the common good moral standard of being kind to others. It is ignorant to claim that All people moving from any state are bad or undesired. In fact, less than 20% (1 out of 5) people who are moving to Utah are coming from California and I'll add that there are far more people leaving and then relocating to certain states are doing so for so many reasons and oftentimes it's because they share the values of that new state. Ultimately, our state is growing because it's an amazing place and we cannot stop that and it is completely outside of our control.
Friendliness is subjective and not the same experience for everyone. That should be removed. You failed to mention how it’s getting so unaffordable to live here
Thanks for that feedback Lynette and I do agree with you for sure. When I redo this video in about 6 months, I will definitely leave that out. As for affordability, yes... this is becoming our biggest enemy and something I'm really passionate about. I'm going to create videos just on that alone as well. Thank you so much for your input, I appreciate you!
I truly do not understand why someone's skin even matters anymore so why do people do often bring it up? I like Morgan Freeman's take on this.... Stop talking about it.
Agreed, and race doesn't have to pulled into every aspect of every conversation. Who cares what race someone is, there are plenty of things that we can find in common as humans
Homelessness is so sad. Utah has a rate of 11 per 10,000 residents compared to the national average of 18. The worst states are on the 2 coasts in California and New York. The word epidemic means that it would have to be widespread, and when only 0.002% of Utahns are homeless and there are approx. 500-600 deaths per year in Utah from Opioids, of which approx 70% are unintentional but caused by drug abuse, I wouldn't even come close to calling this an epidemic. Every single case of homelessness and drug O.D., while tragic, doesn't support this narrative. How would you propose we help these people?
I do understand you're not wanting california's moving there though I lived in california twenty years ago and it was okay but people were rude and nasty and it's way where it's now so all that nasty ass is just seeping out into the world they took over oregon too Where my mom lives
I'm not sure exactly what you're saying but I will add that there are good and bad people everywhere and where you place your focus, it will expand. Hopefully you've found some great people as well
Thanks for the comment! As a licensed agent and the a Fair Housing Act, I can't comment about many things but I will say this: Utah is most certainly a conservative red state, so if that's what you're looking for, that's here. Downtown and closer to Salt Lake City of course, is quite different and this tends to be the case in every major city throughout the US
@@Edward_Cornell_NYLol, how was he biased? He only said Utah is a red state as a response to the dude who said democrats are one of the cons. I am a Democrat myself and don't see anything wrong with his response. The one with the problem is the OP.

As for the best cities in Utah... here they are:
#1 Mapleton
#2 Murray
#3 Roy
#4 Syracuse
Beyond this, Salt Lake City also has great infrastructure that includes Google Fiber.
Too many people live here anymore. I'm native of SLC. Can't enjoy anything. Crowded and expensive.
I understand
Amen
This is how every enjoyable state has become, it’s not just Utah. Basically any state that has some desire to it has been crowded and prices have gone up. People are no longer staying in their old hometown in which they grew up, more people are moving out and relocating somewhere they want to live
Yes they are
Seems like only developers love the growth, others are trying to find the minimum amount of open spaces where I live, so they can stand it, and other people won’t get mad, and no one loves the traffic, it is dangerous, I get scared as a rider….the whole way, if I have to ride on the freeway. The smaller canyons are crowded now. I do not breathe as well as I did where I grew up….because I am nervous of the air. And in my area, they are getting people to prepare for the big one. I won’t say the rest, but there are growing typical big city issues where I live.
Hi Katherine! I hope that you can find the many beautiful things to living here as well
Thanks for your informative video ❤ thinking about move to Utah from Massachusetts
Hi Shumik! I would love to help, you know where to find me!
No, go back
Don't listen to those who like to tell people to stay out
The list of cons was very helpful, thanks, and saludos desde Nicaragua!
Awesome! Thank you! I also speak fluent Spanish and I'd love to talk sometime. Que les vaya bien y saludos de Utah!
I see people talking about the prices on housing but that's all over the USA, I can careless about housing I'll move out there and live in my van especially escape the damn heat in Arizona.....
Inflation during these last 3 years is hurting people and it's happening everywhere
Thanks for the information, Scott. I'll be a renter when I move but I found your video helpful
You are so welcome! Regardless of whether you're renting or not, I'm always happy to help you and answer any questions that you may have.
Interesting take, thanks for sharing your experience.
Is living in Utah as expensive as Orlando Florida?
I've been traveling here and there for 22 years. I've been to every single state except for Hawaii. Betty Jean Eadie will tell you that the slightest thing that anyone does effects the world for better or worse. As much traveling as I've done, my comments carry more weight behind them than than Rick Steves and Samantha Brown COMBINED!
I would love to visit as many places as you have one day!
I want to live there, It seems so nice.
Let's make it happen!
If you're into the outdoors, you'll love pretty much sums things up!
Dude, come on. You ignored the elephant in the room. The Mormons. They need to be on the Pro and Con list. Both lists for different reasons.
I love it! Let me know if I can ever help you or if there's a specific video you'd like to see
Possibly.... there are some very friendly places in the Midwest. In fact, Minnesota was named the friendliest state again!
If you're planning on relocating to Utah.....dont.
I hear you!
What about Traffic?
Traffic here is far better than all of the other surrounding cities or similar or larger size
Don't forget State Street. For all your pharmaceutical needs.
Good point💡
Would love to move Utah from Ukraine when the war will over. God bless America ❤
Bless you
D O N T !!!
I understand this too
Don’t!!! We don’t have any more room or can afford any more people😂😂😂
I understand, but it is still going to grow
I'm pretty sure every state says that. 😬
And it's grown and change that is very difficult for some people
personal question, do you make videos like these to convince people to come to Utah. and by scheduling a call to get to "know us", would that be when you'd be like.. hey "I'm a realtor and i know where to get you the best houses for the best prices!" thus you benefiting in the long run. because if this is your goal, i got to tell you its smart as heck. and GOD Bless you for that. i just really hope you arent one that rips people off 🙂
I'm not sure how in the world I would ever be able to "rip people off" let alone convince people to move here.
If your thinking about coming to Utah don’t
Lol
Why, Utah is awesome!
@@lollipop1894it’s really not. It’s lame in Utah. Hot, low water supplies, expensive gas. Mormons. Wouldn’t recommend. 0/10

Everyone is pretty irritated by the number of people relocating here.
Some are. Not all.
@@scottdsteele You're right I'm sure the other Californians you helped move here don't mind at all.
@@Drew-hu7hbnow you know how Californians from when everyone was moving here from 2000-2020. It’s a two-way road pal, accept it and enjoy your life
@Drew-hu7hb People relocate for SO many reasons and I love people from any state... or country so long as they uphold the common good moral standard of being kind to others.
I hope that anyone moving here feels welcomed and loved no matter who they are or where they've come from😁
Friendliness is subjective and not the same experience for everyone.

Agreed, and race doesn't have to pulled into every aspect of every conversation. Who cares what race someone is, there are plenty of things that we can find in common as humans
you forgot to mention creepy Mormons
And the worst comment of the day award goes to.... hey, this isn't the place for those comments at all
You forgot to mention the huge heroin epidemic that is fueling our homeless issue.
