Repatha

  • While the extraordinarily expensive Repatha dramatically lowers LDL or “Bad Cholesterol” to levels of 30 mg, it fails to reduce the likelihood of death from all causes or even death from cardiovascular disease. Furthermore it barely budges the incidence of stroke or heart attack. Studies suggest a cost well in excess of $2,000,000 to prevent one heart related fatality. Originally thought of as a miracle drug, its lackluster results may lead to a reassessment of the importance of LDL in causing heart disease. As one eminent cardiologist says the drug may just be “performing cosmetic surgery on a laboratory value.”

I've been on Repatha for just over 6 months. I've always had high cholesterol so when Repatha came along we figured why not give it a try .. my current statin was causing me the normal statin problems. Started Repatha June of 2019. My stats were: ldl 115, chol 202, tri 230, hdl 41. Think I was on Crestor at the time I made the switch. November 2019: ldl 71, chol 336, tri 667, hdl 38. December 2019: ldl 98, chol 427, tri 714, hdl 36.
As to the side affects it would be easier to tell you what I'm not experiencing. I have an appointment with the eye Dr. because my vision has changed to the point where I need new glasses. Always needed glasses to read .. not any more! In Nov. 2019 I ended up in ER with a blood clot and the next day back in ER with what appeared to be a kidney stone but wasn't .. nausea, chest pains, leg pains, etc.
I called Amgen directly and told them of the problems .. the minute I mentioned 'blood clot' I was transferred to their 'Safety Team' and the nurse there took all the info on my blood clot and told me to stop the drug immediatly.
The VA pharmacist went over all these results and is making them available to the FDA and is making the problems know to other VA facilities.
This drugs side effects came on very slowly .. its insidious in it's effects.

The only problem is that Ldl not necesarily bad cholesterol. This is an old notion and a self serving notion for the pharmaceutical companies. Quite frankly LDL is not that predictive. Some people have very high LDL'S like myself and no heart disease. Some people have low LDL and have heart disease. Its about the particle size...subcomponents that makes up the LDL. Triglyceride/ LDL ratio is highly predictive for heart disease, 2 or lower is great, The higher the ratio your chance of blockage increases, My number is below a 2 it is about a 1. How did I do it? Fish oi lowers tryglycerides and raises Hdl. I added just a little alcohol to ny diet....increases hdl. Incidently the tryglceride/hdl ratio coressponds particle size. Also I use 1500mg of timed release niacin. Rapatha is wonderful for the pharmaceutical company....it probably unnecessary for most peope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are the FACTS that pertain to me. Extremely high cholesterol due to genetics. 29 stents to date over a 20 year time period and 25 angioplasty procedures. 5 artery bypass and 3 scarred closed in less than 3 years (all were leg veins). Have been on statin drugs of all kinds for decades with nothing but side effects including severe muscle pain. Was put on Repatha in 2018. After 24 hours of the initial dose, I felt "not right" but was not really sure what it was. Within 48 hours of the initial dose I had "cold or flu" like symptoms including headache, runny nose, sore throat, and diarrhea. This continues up to my next dose as my doctor tells me that these side effects will pass. Within 24 hours of my second dose, I have severe diarrhea, lose my voice, extreme headaches, throwing up, severe hot and cold flashes, dizzy spells, unable to eat due to throwing up any foods or liquids, runny nose is now major sinus problems. Within 72 hours of taking second dose, I now have extreme and almost unbearable itching. I am scratching so much that my bed sheets are covered in blood from scratching in my sleep (very little sleep at this point) Called my doctor for some kind of relief and was told, "just take Benadryl and it will get better" Well after almost two weeks of constant throwing up, diarrhea, unbearable itching, headaches, sinus problems, sore throat and loss of voice, and no sleep, I found myself BEGGING FOR GOD TO TAKE ME so I could have some relief. Refused to listen to my doctor anymore and STOPPED TAKING THIS POISON !! It took MONTHS for the side effects to fully go away, but the diarrhea and throwing up ceased about a week before the next injection was due. The itching went away about a week after the next injection was due and I was covered in scabs from all the scratching. It took the longest time for the "cold and flu" like symptoms to go away, but they eventually did. The kicker was that after the second injection and BEFORE the next injection was due, my cholesterol was tested. I had to call the doctor numerous times to get the results only to find there was NO significant change. The doctor told me that it was because I was not on Repatha long enough. I told her that if I stayed on it any longer I WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD! This is FACT not fiction. Every person handles medicines differently and for my doctor of over 10 years to tell me that I would not have any side effects from this drug was wrong on so many levels. TO THIS DAY, she has refused to put in my medical records all of the side effects that this drug caused to me. I have to wonder what kind of a kickback these doctors are getting for pushing this extremely expensive drug. All I can say is that this drug was POISON to my body. I have an extremely hard time believing I am the only person on this planet having this much trouble with this medication. In ALL of the years of fighting this disease, this was only the 2nd time that I had asked God to "just take me". The first time was after suffering for over 45 minutes with unbearable chest pains while suffering from a heart attack and waiting for the ambulance to show up. Ya the ambulance company got a "golden heart" award for "saving my life" on that day. My wife could have drove me to the hospital in less than 30 minutes and gave me the same treatment I received from the ambulance company and I don't think it would have cost me $7500.00 for my wife to take me. That was the first AND LAST time we call for an ambulance period and yes there have been several more heart attacks since this event. Off track I know, but the point is REPATHA IS BAD NEWS FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, BEWARE OF THIS DRUG !!!!!

My doctor was trying to get me into the Repatha study since my LDL was over 300 due to familial high cholesterol. I was not able to get into the study since I had not had a coronary event and tests did not show artery disease or blockage. So from that I concluded that the study is with people that have had disease BEFORE they entered the study. Doesn't that skew the results? I am currently taking repatha which has dramatically reduced my LDL to acceptable numbers. Since four of my siblings died of heart disease and the statins caused joint and muscle pain above 20 mgs. I am getting Repatha free because of my low income ($20K/year). I have had no side effects after four months of use. I am taking the 20 mgs of Crestor as well as the Repatha.

Depends on what kind of study there are doing. If they were studying the effect of the drug in people with familial hypercholesterolemia you would have likely made it. Cholesterol is a risk factor for problems, not necessarily a cause. By selecting people who previously have had an event they are getting a pool of people that are more likely to have a problem that could be helped by lowering cholesterol.
Think of it this way. Gasoline is a risk factor for fires, it does not necessarily cause fires (gasoline + oxygen + a spark causes fires). Its easy to logically say that the more gasoline in an area the higher the risk of fire correct? Well there are some places with lots of gasoline that never have fires (a room with no or low probability for a spark).
In our world we can look at a room and determine if its safe to store gasoline or if it would be a fire hazard. With medicine its difficult to do that because there many unknowns and everything is very small. It would be like trying to identify if a place was safe to store gasoline from outer space, much more difficult to do (we could see the building is made of wood for example or on an old power grid).
Now on top of that lets say that we have some new chemical that would reduce the risk or gasoline causing a fire that we have to test from outerspace. That would be very difficult to do, because a lot of these buildings we aren't going to be able to tell if they are even at risk for fire all the way from space. The easiest way to test it would be to use it on an area or building that had previously burned down, because they have proven in the past to have that type of problem. Its possible that the fire could have been caused by something else completely, but we are more likely to find place that this chemical would help. It will be possible to get an answer much more quickly to find out if the chemical works or not. We are going to know that answer much sooner on testing places that previously burned down than just places with lots of gas, because not every place with lots of gasoline will burn down or is even at risk for burning down.
