I think that you pretty much nailed it with this video and I have to agree. I also am intrigued by the reordering of the High Heavens and believe that this may be the main reason as to why the angels closed their gates. It would make sense, considering the fact that the angels must be in harmony for them to perform the ritual to create more angels. So they would have to restructure things in order to find that harmony, with regards to this, it makes sense that they would close off the High Heavens. They can't afford any distractions while trying to restructure everything and, let's face it, Sanctuary is very distracting.

Well, with the restructuring of high heavens, they have Valor for military discipline, Fate for knowledge, Hope for unity. They are missing Justice so no judge as to right or wrong. No wisdom to guide the Heavens. So, It might just be without Justice Imperius is just grabbing up all the power with no one to stop him. No wisdom to tell Imperius, "Hey, stop that! We are out number 5 to 1 by demons, Let's not cause a civil war in here." I think Imperius is pushing his luck in the high heavens and making the lightsong impossible.

I’m thinking Tyrael as the aspect of wisdom saw that Imperius is the next big problem for a greater balance as he is now tainted by sin. Imperius hates that the Nephalem had to save the day on his watch with the pride he holds onto. I think Tyrael locked heaven as a way to keep Imperius contained and secretly in check but Imperius figured out his motive and in his pride killed him and is going to be a major villain boss in D4. The moral dilemma is with the nephalem. As the mother figure of Lilith and her appeal to the nephalem versus opposing both her evil and the new evil of Imperius. Both heaven and hell get destroyed and the balance exists just with the nephalem as the biological mix.

About the Lorath Nahr thing, check the first scenes before the old man shows up in the Gameplay Trailer of Diablo IV, the scene inside the barn shoes 'something' leaning against a wooden beam that looks particularly like his weapon (check the hi-res Gameplay trailer from the press kit and his concept art from Diablo III). Also believe that would be Tyrael inside the grave.

Well, I mean they were blindsided by the utter power potential of the Nephalem.
The only one who even had a conceived idea of their power potential was Lilith, which is why she chose to birth them (and by default, thus humanity) in the first place.
Prime Evil Diablo practically pimp slapped Imperious down with near casual ease. Only suffering a scratch on the cheek in their encounter.
And the entirety of the angelic host was then also pushed to the brink in defense of heaven.
    They were losing.
Whereas the Nephalem, took on that same Diablo singlehandedly.
Hell, Lilith is actually miffed that with the world stone destroyed and in shards, the Nephalem's power is actually limited.
Implying they're only functioning at a fraction of their full capacity.
Much of the Diablo Reddit is screaming "f__k the heavens! Help mom!" in response to Lilth being the new big bad, lol
    .
Which I'd not be surprised if they pull a fast one on us like they did with Diablo 2 and all the former allies from the previous game are now enemies in this upcoming one.
Meaning, the Nephalem may actually be the final boss in Diablo 4 if she "turns" them.
The fandom is really asking the question, are the heavens really deserving of being saved?
They're just as guilty via standing by inactive of perpetuating this seemingly endless eternal conflict as the legions of hell are for always throwing the first punches.
    Which again, Lilith is against.
Her goal has always been the end of the eternal conflict.

How would the Nephalem's power be limited by the Worldstone being shattered? It being shattered is what allowed them to come back in the first place. It was attuned to limiting humanity's powers in order to keep them from wiping out Heaven and Hell themselves (which is what Lilith made them for). Now that limiter is gone. Which is why D3 was the natural evolution of the storyline, despite many complaining about the over-the-top levels of power the player character had and why D4 is reining that back in. Not sure Lilith cares about not throwing the first punch. She bred an army to take the fight to both sides and rule over the remainder, and she killed all of her colleagues that were afraid of the nephalem's power. She got banished to the Abyss twice because of her basically seeking to take a neutral third party and use it to rule all of Creation. Humans would rather be left alone, but she wants to end the war by ending everyone else and reigning supreme.

that kinda reminds me, does tyrael actually get his sword back every time or does he just have hundreds of identical copies laying around somewhere? it seems to get lost in almost every fight. first he dropped it into the fire/lava when he got overwhelmed by tal rasha and the dark wanderer, then he threw it to destroy the world stone, then it got broken and repaired during diablo 3. maybe in d4 there will be a secret loot room in heaven as an easter egg, kinda like the cow level, but instead of enemies it will just have a lot of chests and each chest contains at least 1 tyraels sword. lmao

I'm sure someone else has pointed this out, but the single Nephelem is not alone. Not only are there others of the other classes, but the companions can all go through the temple challenge, which implies they are also Nephelem, though not so developed. The PC and three companions, entirely apart from pets, are dangerous to both Heaven and Hell. With Imperius corrupted and Tyreal mortal, there is little the Heavens can actually do, especially if Tyreal's sword should remain in human keeping, but to close and bind the gates as well as to seal off at least some of the Hoadric portals as well. Otherwise, Imperius might have his throwdown with a heroic Nephelem and come out the worse for it.
Btw, which angel was it that loved a Nephelem that Tyreal mentions to Lyndon in Act V?

Amazing theories!! I'd have to add that Tyrael becoming Wisdom doesn't really make sense. The Aspects relate to the Archangel's very essence, they don't need to learn, they simply are... Tyrael being a mortal can indeed learn wisdom, but he cannot be THE aspect of it imo... Plus he would die some day, as a mortal... I think a new aspect of Wisdom emerged from the Arch and he directed the closing of the Heavens...
A slightly corrupted Archangel perhaps? I don't think Diablo's meddling with the Arch had no consequence after all... No new aspects maybe?
A wrathful, but tactical Imperious after Tyrael's death that suggests allowing mortals the silence of heaven to prove where their free will takes them? So many ideas!

yeah, the storywriting for d3 was kinda lackluster. one way to save it would be to say tyrael didn't actually become the aspect of wisdom but rather acted as replacement until a new true aspect of wisdom was formed. at least to me that's what makes the most sense so that's what i'll believe.

In terms of outright protecting the Angels and continuing their existence he may very well have been right. The sad fact is that when all is said it done, it's also quite possible that both heaven and hell need to somewhat be re-assimilated for things to change on Sanctuary. I always fear a little bit they will go this route where they try to restore Anu or something to make a new balance in the Diablo universe. I think though it would never work because the ongoing feud with heaven and hell, and humanity caught in the middle has always been necessary for the franchise to exist in the first place.

@@DemonKnight85 Even such idea is terrible for franchise and lore it is hard to even imagine. No just no ... it is not LGBT or other freaks wishing party . It is Diablo universe where opposing elements just don't have ANY love for other. Remember Sanctuary was created by Angels and Demons that had doubts about ongoing war. But there was plenty - in fact Huge Majority of Angels and Demons who were not looking for any reconcilation at all ever - for a pretty damn good reason. And can't blame them , lets be honest Demons want totally opposite to what Angels want - so in this case this isn't pointless war, but JUST war. Like World beating Nazi in WWII. Not all wars are pointless and bad. Sometimes you have to stand for what you believe in or lose EVERYTHING you hold dear.

Didnt Tyreal become mortal? Well mortal... at least human, no longer an angel. So that would mean he is still on Sanctuary, especially after the behaviour of Malthael and being cast out by The Aspect of 'Valor', Imperius. Next to that like you said, harmony is required for the song. I wouldnt be surprised if they are still healing after what both Diablo and Malthael did to the harmony, the former corrupted the place the latter violated the contract of collaboration between the heavens themselves. However one can said that the harmony already started to crumble when Imperius gave into pride and anger. So what are the heavens missing? The aspect of Valor, the aspect of Wisdom AND the aspect of Justice. Thats a big hole in the harmony.
Dang it everything i wrote down, a few seconds later you talk about XD
Maybe this inner fight between the heavens is what allowed Lilith to make use of the opening and emptiness of power at both the Heavens and Hells?

I actually thought the person in the grave he was speaking to during the monologue was the late Deckard Cain...especially when he referenced "brother". It seems like the game developers really have a deep seeded beef with Heaven. Because Heaven in this lure is depicted as very weak and the Angels easily corruptible and or manipulated and lots of infighting. Lilith makes it clear (in her diary) that she is fed up with her uncles (the 3 prime evils)...but she keeps such beef to herself...no infighting. And my guess is that now that Heaven's Gates are closed, only Hell under the rule, leadership, or cue of Lilith can save sanctuary with Naphthalene army under her command can defeat (or rule over) both Heaven and Hell. It's going to be a great deception end game nevertheless.

Here comes my angry neck-beard vent.
The problem with the dynamics of heaven and the way it's treated in Diablo III, at least from where I'm sitting, is that they took away the elemental nature of it. This is a quirk I see in a more than a couple franchises, like Supernatural for example. Hell is supposed to be the elemental embodiment of evil. It is and always should be, the raw, unbreakable, universal wellspring of all the terrible things in the universe. It is one half of an equation that governs the universe, the other half being Heaven, which naturally, should be the elemental source of all that is good. There was a mathematics too it. You could balance the equation from one side to the other, but they had to equal out at some point. This raw, unbreakable source of courage, wisdom, and compassion. It worked by the rules that seemed to govern the world of Diablo. Hell should never be able to destroy Heaven, and vice versa, and the farther you get from 0 (which we'll stick mankind here on this scale), the more difficult it should be to progress your influence.
Well in Diablo 3, and other franchises, instead of heaven being the opposite and equal end to that equation of good and evil, Heaven and it's angels appear as corrupt, malicious, fragile, and shockingly susceptible to hell's influence. So really, it's not the opposite of Hell at all. I like the Heaven portrayed in the previous Diablo games, distant, enigmatic, but existing as this counterbalance to Hell's influence. Not wanting to oppress mankind with it will, or at least being extremely calculating with it's intent, as we see in the actions of it's agents, such as Tyreal.
But, as Diablo 3 had shitty writers who didn't understand or couldn't write around the idea of the two polar opposite but codependent forces of heaven and hell, good and evil, they made the angels a bunch of weak, arrogant, stupid assholes. We never seem to see demons display mercy, or honor, or humility, so why do you expect me to buy it when you just make angels crappy humans with wings? Like Star Wars, Star Trek, and the later seasons of Game of Thrones, the creators didn't understand their franchises and it all reads like shitty fan fiction.

huge +1 on pretty much everything you said. really makes you wonder how heaven was even able to resist against the onslaught of hell millenia ago before sanctuario even became a thing. with the way things appear in diablo 3, it should have been easy enough for demons to win long before anything we know in the games even came into existance. sure there's that excuse of "demon attacks always inevitably fail because they eventually start fighting each other when it looks like they're winning". but that seems like just a lazy excuse to me because in essence saying that is implying to agree that angels really are much weaker than demons by nature. and this then throws the entire concept of balance completely out.
overall, pre d3 i've always viewed angels as a bit more like space marines from wh40k. ultimately being the forces of virtue, light, and all that, but not all too concerned over the fate of individual humans and even willing and able to cut down those of their own who have been touched by corruption.

And maybe Tyreal can be knocked down a notch; being justice and wisdom makes him.... always right... which I've hated from the start. Maybe Imperius actually HAS a point and Wisdom Tyreal instead of just Justice, can now see his point clearly, which is why it is difficult to make the next decision and heaven has to be closed to figure it out. But Lilith is returning... time is running out...

So much happened, they think nephalem is strong enough to protect the world? Meanwhile heaven is closed just to cure wounds and rethink everything? Or maybe they know it is not over, something evil is coming and they have not enough strength? Yes... simple, just like that. We can't take Blizzard's lore as gospel. If Lilith were D4's true antagonist, player nephilim would literally be the bad guys according to lore, because she co-created Sanctuary to be a neutral ground free of Light and Dark influence.
So either Lilith is being retconned or players are disrupting the neutrality of Sanctuary.

  • @TanakaMatsumoto

Ever since the heavens found out about humanity they've (except Inarius (for obvious reasons) and Tyrael) been against humanity. They simply "helped" so the prime evils wouldn't control them for their side. They've never cared about humanity largely in part due to imperius but he lead the angiris council and they made decisions on behalf of all of the heavens, since he didn't care others kind of couldn't either. Even Inarius eventually stopped caring about humanity, which basically only left Tyrael as humanity's heavenly guardian. So when they say heavens have closed their gates it kind of just tells me the devs don't understand their own story fully, they've never really been open in the first place.

Sanctuary is at this point like a post apocalyptic world. I would have given the world way longer time to heal and then forget the darkness that engulfed the world and even the story in d2 and d3 is only a legend and myth in which Lilith would be plotting her thing. So, I hope whatever happens either Imperius get a redemption arc, where he apologizes to us and to TYREAL, recognizing he was right(mostly) this whole time....or we get to kill the bastard with his own spear. Seriously words cannot express how much I wanted to kill him in Act 4 and how I wish they would have made him the villian of RoS.
Anywho, I think you nailed it about the heavens. They need to restore their ranks and numbers, but I bet they wont be able to. Imperius is so out of tune he could be a pop star. Without (real) wisdom to guide the angels will not get organized. So they will just close and wait. The hells are silent for the moment, so they dont have to act now, yet it would seem the best time, if they took over the hells they may could stop the Evils the instant they respawn.
Somehow the angels always seem to make the wrong decision, yet fall forward. I think if they challenge the nephalim they will regret it, but I bet thats where the story goes. Either Hell and Heaven unite against the nephalim, or we have to ally with hell to help defeat heaven, then Diablo will somehow trick a nephalim and steal his body/power, final boss mode activated.

Well I may be the one, but I really hope this around for once Angels stop being shit and so and actually for once get shit done and be major force they ARE MEANT TO BE. So far Demons always push the narrative and straightforward stomp Angels - heck almost destroying them completely in D3. It is now or never Angels actually kick some Demon ass. I know game is about player killing Demons , but lets be honest Tyrael and not only - as Angeris Council didnt decide to destroy Sanctuary are not bad guys - they are good. How the hell can you blame them for even looking at Nephalem with prejudice in first place is beyond me. Imagine fighting Demons for eternity - seeing them killing your brothers and sisters daily. And what now ... you treat thier offspring with Angel as sudden innocent allies ? Heck I have to say Heavens really went super soft on Sanctuary.
It really sucks that Angels are not shown to kick some ass of late.
Honestly ... I don't like Tyrael becoming human. I have nothing against humanity - rotfl I'm one myself haha. But what was so damn wrong about having ally that ain't Human ? And yes he was humanity ally before he mortal. Which kinda also irks me, I get why he rejected Angel powers - but at same time it was stupid - he was insanely powerful Archangel - who knows maybe most powerful and that power could be used for good. Dismaring yourself just to prove point is at best questionable.
