    As a neutral fan in Calgary, I respect that he hasn't tried to rush the rebuild, and you guys have gotten a bit better every year, and young players are coming along, and some just haven't been ready to take on big roles yet, and he hasn't pushed them when they aren't ready. Guys like Chiarot and Petry and Holl aren't good, but they are kinda there to take the heat. Notice how everyone talks about how they aren't good contracts and players but nobody is really going after the kids for not being superstars yet?
    Its definitely slow going, but when he took over the Wings had some of the worst contracts in the league, and pretty easily the worst prospect pool. He literally had to start from complete scratch, and people underestimate just how long a process that really is

      It is hard to be patient when you have to build from scratch. Impatient fans and media and Toronto and Montreal have hurt both teams. Selling out the future to make the playoffs now has kept them away from high draft picks and only led them to early golf seasons. Signing big name free agents will accomplish the same thing for Detroit. Yzerman is not looking to make the playoffs this year so much as winning the playoffs down the road. The team that has amassed several picks is Chicago. 18 in just the first 2 rounds over 2022, 2023, 2024, & 2025. If only half work out, that will be a great core to build on.

    It is really funny to see people still overvalue Walman
    How would you see this d core getting worse?
    Walman was like a 3rd pair d on a cup contender, but getting top pair minutes for the red wings because he was playing well with Seider for one season - he was essentially benched by the end of last season
    And Walman was like a 20 points a season D. It is like he was this 40-50 points steady d man.
    Edvinsson should and would rack up over 20 points next season (if he doesn’t, many might question his potential).
    Chiarot actually played well last season. His contract looks ok now. Ideally you have him on the second pair.
    Losing Walman is not a big deal. Only issue with his trade was the 2nd round pick. But then again he had term on his contract, so you had to give up some to move him
    The big hole is RHD on the second pair. Maybe it is addressed this offseason (still plenty of time left for a trade or two), or by trade deadline.
    Goalie tandem got better too. Talbot and Lyon would be a good solid 910-913 tandem.
    Defensively this team is a lot better (Gust replacing Ghost, Motte replacing Sprong, Talbot replacing Husso/Reimer)
    Offensively Tarasenko should replace Fabbri and a bit more. You get hopefully a full season of Kane. Ray would get even better. Cat could score 5 more if he doesn’t hit so many posts or crossbar.
    Not to mention potential arrival of Danielson, Kasper or Mazur.
    Super excited about next season.
    They would be in the mix for the playoffs and it will be a good season

    • @wingshockeyfan
      @wingshockeyfan Месяц назад

      Agreed, Walman was not great defensively and rarely went to fight for a puck in the corner. Simon will be a good defensive upgrade from him. Ghost was very good for the powerplay but he was really bad defensively. He would go into the corner and as soon as he seen someone coming he would spin and throw it up the boards and usually right to the opposing teams stick. Both Johansson and Gustafsson will be defensive upgrades for Ghost.

      Solid take. The biggest hole Walman leaves behind is no more Griddy. I liked watching him play, loved his move at the blue line, but he was more of a meh all around.
      I look at the free agent signings - Copp, Charoit, Compher, Holl, I think Yzerman sees all 4 spots filled by prospects by the end of these contracts. He certainly has drafted this way.
      Let the man cook. I’m old enough to remember seeing Yzerman and Co. end our 42 year Cup drought. He’s the right man for the job.

    • @chrismoleski6213
      @chrismoleski6213 Месяц назад

      Walman actually was very good defensively - and played all situations. Don’t gaslight fans into believing he wasn’t good. Played significant pk time and was one of the team’s best skaters. Also don’t forget how many shots he blocked and how often he had to play hurt last year as a result.

    • @chrismoleski6213
      @chrismoleski6213 Месяц назад

      Also, offensively Berggren is replacing Fabbri - Tarasenko is replacing Perron. I still have doubts about Kane’s hip holding up permanently and I think Edvinsson is going to have significant growing pains playing his first full season in the NHL. It’s a step back for sure.

    What do you make of Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson saying that the Dallas Stars, Logan Stankoven and Thomas Harley are the "model" on how to develop prospects. Essentially saying they did not recall those prospects up from the ahl until they had "thoroughly earned it" and he wants the blackhawks prospects to do the same. Do you think this is right? It's a funny thing when to exit the rebuild through the draft mentality and enter the trade for and sign seasoned vets window. Canucks fans went rabid when we traded for Miller complaining that it wasn't the right time to trade a 1st for a young experiencedt center, and now he's been one of the best players and heart and soul of a team that got to game 7 of the second round.
      I think you're right about Detroit, but I really feel like Zadina busting really fucked up the Yzerplan. Yzerman hit on almost every pick in Tampa and almost completely drafted the top 6. With Zadina missing and other players not playing to potential (I may be totally wrong here) but that just leaves you guys with Raymond and Seider hitting full potential from those early round draft picks. Hopefully more young players step up in the future and the free agents work out because Detroit not being in the playoffs is still so weird to me.

    The Yzerplan is just now beginning to take shape. That doesn’t mean it will work - but this is the first off-season that Yzerman has had where he has intentionally left roster spots open for players he drafted. 1-2 years from now we’ll see if the Yzerplan is coming to fruition or if it’s tanking.
    This is taking longer than any of us would like, and I am really discouraged by some of the decisions he made this off-season and last. I think this roster is a little worse overall than last year’s, but if his prospects are as advertised and can crack the lineup and be difference makers then this team could look better than last year’s and make the playoffs.

    Since his return to Detroit he is not drafting well after the 1st round. Mazur seems to be about the only exception. Andrew Gibson was traded away in a rare move that either Nashville wanted him bad, or Detroit felt Gibson was not measuring up to their expectations, or other defenders were already better. Any way you look at it that 2023 second round (Gibson) was a stunner with no forwards being taken despite several key players still available (Lind, Rehkopf, Sawchyn and Heidt)
    Many think late round gems are overblown stat as the odds are against many players making a final NHL roster. Yet finding them brings bonus returns for your roster, reduces your salary cap, and if too many these turn into trade assets without having to overspend in free agency (Holl and Petry).

    Then he picked up Kane and I was sure that was going to be a flop, and was pleased to see it was not. Felt Tarasenko was a better draw at the time. And now here we are the next year and we have BOTH Kane and Tarasenko. Feel there was a bit of a gamble done there which paid off.
    Now the issue is Yzerman signed some fairly greying beards in the goaltending situation which makes one wonder what the roles will be next year.

    Neutral Flames fan. I'll defend the Stephenson signing in Seattle. Personally, I don't think they want him to be a driver, I think they want someone who can play the support role while mentoring Beniers and their other young guys. I'm guessing he'll have a similar role to what Coleman has in Calgary.

    I agree 100% on Yzerman. Spotty record on signings and a defense that needs a retooling. They're gonna need big years out of the young guns to take the next step which is pretty unrealistic. I can't say i expect the playoffs yet.

    Yzerman's top priority this off-season needed to be getting a proven top 4 RHD. He tried and failed by wasting time and assets (making 2 trades with one being dumping Walman for nothing) trying to get Trouba who wanted nothing to do with being traded. He got played by Drury and by the time he realized it, it was too late and Pesce, Montour and Tanev were gone and so were his chances of getting that proven top 4 RHD. Now he is stuck with what he has and that is 1 (maybe 2 if Edvinsson can have a great rookie season) top 4 defenseman (Seider) and a bunch of bottom pairing guys.
    To me the offense might be similar or close but the defense is not any better and neither is the goaltending. Who that made the playoffs falls out this year? Caps maybe? Islanders? Carolina lost defensemen but they should still be a playoff team. Tampa lost some players but with their core, they should still be a playoff team. Devils should easily be a playoff team with their improved goalies and defense. Sens should be better but not sure about this coach.
    Bottom line, i don't have much hope of the Wings making the playoffs this season unless Yzerman can work some magic and get that proven top 4 RHD in a trade before the season starts.

    Red wings acquire evgeni Malkin
    Penguins acquire Andrew copp, Jonathan bergrenn & a conditional 3rd or 4th
    Don’t get me wrong malkin still pretty solid for his age but In the situation Pittsburghs in the could use some younger fresh legs, pretty much a bad contract for bad contract but malkin has lesser term on the deal.

    As a Preds fan, I think it was more likely a head scretcher why did they draft Askarov. I have full faith in Saros and I love the guy. He is almost as much of a legend as Pekka Rine and I always wanted him to end basicaly like Rine (maybe without the criticism and drastic drop of form). End in Nashville being replaced by a younger Nashville drafted goalie who he tought a lot and is his best friend. And Askarov is too old and it would be too soon to be Askarov as the replacement, so he can go (In my opinion). Trade him for some young talent, who should have been picked instead of him. 😁

    Teams can't throw out scoring lines on Ghost this season in Detroit. Hard to sign players that do not want to come to Detroit. 16th in the league is not easy to achieve in this cap area. Wings are exciting to watch, teams can't compete with the Wings that's why they need the trap and deflect goals in.

    The team has gotten better every year. The young guys are finally all filling their roles. This team is only gonna keep getting better. The plan is on track. What do people expect? It’s how full rebuilds Work. He took over for the 19/20 season and picked back to back beauty’s with Raymond and Seider. You have also kasper, edvisson, danielson and Axel sandin pellikka all for the future. Signed and traded for players. He couldn’t do anything bout constantly falling in the draft. The wings should have been in the damn playoffs. plain and simple. They finished the season like 6-13 and missed by a point. Twice during the season they had 7+ game losing streaks..you look back and it literally ruined their season. The wings bit themselves in the foot. Next season this team should 100% compete. If not then Yzerman really has to do some thinking.

    The yzerplan didn't get the lottery boost teams like hawks and sj got. No excuse 17 win '19-'20 wings got bumped down to 4 so rags could get top pick. Wings never moved up once in this 8 year playoff drought. And wallman isn't a big loss. 8 and 46 are seives on d and wings need a regular goalie who is good. Once that is fixed wings will be alright. If not yzerman's coach is the problem. Maybe go for a coach who isn't bald and ugly next time. The mess of bad contracts and lack of d in system holland left yzerman to clean up was always gonna be 5+ years. And wings have too many one way forwards that don't play d.
