He mostly plays one-handed keyboard and mouse on PC, but having the option to use a controller easier would open up some good options for him. I'll definitely be printing this for him ASAP.

    Looking at this gives hope for disabled gamers, my father suffers a stroke over 6 years ago and he used to enjoy playing some games in his spare time with me growing up. He lost his right side and trying to find controlers or extra devices that would be easy for him to use was a bit hard. Especially limiting since some other games were more action and fast paced reacting. Hoping to possible look further into this but this is great!

      3d printers are cheap these days. Supposedly libraries let you print stuff on their 3d printers too, but ive never known anyone who has actually done it, so idk how it works. You could look into that though. Last black friday the ender 3 (3d printer) was only 100 bucks though. Its still pretty cheap. Honestly its almost worth it just to get into 3d printing. It doesnt require both sides of your body, and that way he could fine tune his controller adapter to suit his needs better. The ender 3 is a great entry level printer with tons of room for upgrading and tons of cheap parts available online. 3d printing is a great hobby for anyone imo. There are probably more youtube videos and parts available for the ender 3 than anything else since its so common. With about 60 bucks in chinese "clone" parts you could upgrade the ender 3 into a pretty serious 3d printer. He could make one handed versions of whatever he needed in whatever material he wanted it in. For this, any cheap stiff PLA filament is probably best but there are tons of materials out there. Nylon and polycarbonate (bulletproof glass) are super fun to print with IMO. If he learned to design though he could make things that would benefit others too. The people who actually need these products are often the best at designing them because they put their heart into it and are better at testing them in a realistic manner. Designing on a program like tinkercad is actually super easy. If you can use microsoft paint you can use tinkercad. A 5 minute youtube instruction video and an hour of tinkering with it and youll be a pro. Its very intuitive and doesnt have a steep learning curve like other programs like fusion360. You can load existing designs into tinkercad really easily and make your own tweaks to it. The only downside is that its browser based and sometimes changes can load slowly. Anyways, I apologize for how long this comment has dragged out, I just think 3d printing is a lot of fun and would be an especially useful skill for someone who needed custom tools/parts for one handed use.

Like, just the controller itself that this is modifying was invented in the past 33 years. So you know... It's kind of cooler. And I can think of a few others off the top of my head that could compete.

    The ergonomics of this are really cool. I can't stop thinking about how it could be altered for different configurations. A little quality of life change would be to add a backstrap to stabilize your hand better. Could improve control of the R3 stick and lessen potential accidental movement and clicks of the L3 stick and buttons. Super awesome work man!

  • @MP-oi7dz
    @MP-oi7dz 2 года назад +20

    The controller could be made easier to use for harder games that require you to move the analog stick and press an icon button simultaneously.
    You could orient the icons vertically and push them further to the left. This would place them on the left-hand side of the controller and run down the side of the controller. This would allow you to use your index finger for icon selection while maintaining full control of the analog stick. Your middle and ring fingers can take on the responsibility of the left and right back buttons.
    You should still have plenty of support on the controller, considering a lot of the load is taken on by your lap.

    These "crossbars" remind me of trigger linkages in firearms modified to fire with the trigger in a different position. It's so cool that these can be printed. I will keep this in mind if I ever make a friend or have a family member who I want to play games with and cater to their differing needs. I bet as a project, these controllers will get even more intuitive to use and easy to produce.

    If I had one suggestion to help improve this.
    I believe the most common on those face buttons is X, and Square. Then circle, and least common is triangle in terms of what gets used the most. So, having x, with square to the left of it and circle to the right of it, and triangle to the right of circle would make the most sense.
    If you had a hack and slash game, it would be common to jump with x then quickly hit square for a jump attack for instance.

      @@ShadowGaro I'm sure you could edit it yourself in tinkercad. Im not even kidding, its crazy easy! I could honestly teach my 80+ year old grandma to do it. It's a browser based design software and its ridiculously easy to figure out how to use it. A 5 minute youtube video will teach you everything you need to know to design whatever you want. You can upload this existing design into tinkercad and easily make small tweaks to it yourself. You don't have to know jack about 3d printing or how to use design software in order to learn it. I was intimidated by the idea of learning 3d design until I tried tinkercad. It's not the best for professional use, but its friggen perfect for the average person who just wants to mess around and tinker. Its extremely intuitive. It all works pretty much how you would expect it to work just based on common sense. It's honestly about as easy as microsoft paint. You can print your designs at your local library if you dont have a printer. I highly recommend getting one on black friday or cyber monday. Even the mid tier 3d printers get down to about 100 bucks. They will often be close to half price on those days. It's honestly the most useful hobby in the world. Its a hobby that lets you make things for all of your other hobbies, or even become an inventor if you wanted too.

      Yeah the designs 3d printer creators have made and posted online for free is straight amazing. I have been very interested in them for a while but they were too expensive might have to check the prices of them again now it's been a few years. Some of these things look really difficult to put together though

    Wow, that's amazing! Only gripe I have is that the right trigger and R1 are somewhat linked, there might be a problem for some games. But that's just a little concern, overall it's amazing!

      I dont see how adjusting the settings will get two buttons off eachother if the controller mod is the one linking them you can move jump from r1 to L1 but what about the action on L1 ? And l2? It has to go somewhere maybe you can get a different button combo on some games

    • @jabbajawz
      @jabbajawz 2 года назад

      @@aboutthegiggins4236 The mod only allows you to press one button at time because the R1 and R2 is a "switch".
      The games where that is a drawback is when you have to press both buttons at the same time to execute an action. Generally these tend to be fighting games and they usually allow you to change your layout.

  • @deon6045

    Neat, although I suspect not being able to push the buttons at the same time as moving can be a problem for some games. Would a layout where you raise your fingers to push the buttons rather than using your thumb be feasible? That said, I suppose games where you could change keybinds to make better use of the shoulder buttons, or even switch movement to the right stick (in the case of playing lefty) would suffice.

      I have a controller attachment it allowed me to use my back fingers to reassign buttons to the back so I didn’t have to displace my thumb as much, could do something similar could also make a specialized controller that allowed foot pedals this would allow some form of ability to since I can play completely with my feet already although not as good as my hands but I have played the entirety of Jak and daxter and borderlands with my 🦶

    Very cool man!! I love when people like this make and design these products themselves because there's really nobody better to do it... I can see this being super optimized and built perfectly in a decade of trial and error, shoot, it looks pretty good now if I'm being honest!! Is that the way you've found most comfortable to use so far or just the most convenient for what you like to play??
