This rhyme is why Rakim was one of my Mom’s (r.i.p) favorite MCs. Crazy cause Hip Hop is my era (I’m 52), and her era proceeded that obviously. I could play his songs as loud and in front of her and my Dad (r.i.p), cause he dropped knowledge and didn’t curse. She also loved PAC (r.i.p) too, because of his rebellious nature and probably because she and my pop’s were from the Bay. Thanx for bringing back the memories.
Two eras of Hip hop: before Rakim and after Rakim. When he dropped, rappers changed their styles and the war they wrote their lyrics. He raised a bar that very few were able to reach.
Great reaction. Rakim is The God MC but there’s a lot more to it. I break down my top mc’s list by era. 1. Grand Master Caz, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee 2. Run (from Run DMC), LL Cool J, Kool Moe Dee 3. This order always changes but Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Krs-1 & Kool G Rap are almost always in my top 5. Chuck D from Public Enemy fits in here as well. They gave birth to 4. Big Pun, Biggie, Pac, Nas, Jay Z, Redman, Busta Rhymes, Treach (Naughty by Nature), Black Thought (The Roots), Eminem & Pharoahe Monch. ✌🏾

Rakim is definitely in my top 10, possibly top 5. No one was rapping like him in the late 80's, he literally changed the way rappers rapped, he's a pioneer.
Rakim pound for pound is considered the greatest of all time and the one emcee who literally changed the way people rhyme. Here is a list of people who have quoted his lyrics in their rhymes and claimed in as their biggest influence and they are all on records saying so: Pharoahe Monch, Black Thought, NAS, Jay- Z, Ras Kass, AZ, Beanie Sigel, Styles P, Commin, Kanye, T. I know this is a year old but there's like a trinity of old school MC's that were ahead of their time lyrically as far as how they put words together (wordplay, multi-syllables, etc.) it was Rakim Allah (Eric B. & Rakim), Big Daddy Kane & Kool G. Rap (Kool G. Rap & Polo). Sometimes people throw KRS-ONE (BDP) into that mix who def deserves those props but he was more ahead of his time content wise. Side note: we call them Old School but technically they came out in the so-called New School era. If y'all still looking for newer artists with advanced rhyme styles I'd suggest Crooked I and The Horseshoe Gang for starters but there's a lot more. For some reason though a lot of the newer artists who are lyrically tight don't always make the best music though like they did in the Eric B. & Rakim era.
Rakim is #1 and people have been saying that since 1987. Rakim, Krs-one, Big Daddy Kane, Chuck D, Kool G Rap is Mt Rushmore. Rakim elevated the lyrical game to where people before him and after him all had to elevate their skills. Rakim is the greatest, everyone has learned from Rakim.

Rakim is the Well Spring from which all the Rap that followed after him, was heavily influenced by! His style and flow was unmatched then and even today! That's a major reason why his rhymes schemes and bars where ahead of his time! Rakim understood Music🎶 and how to fit rhymes into the Bars with timing and rhythm like a trained Musician!🎷

Many great MC's will not be inthe top 10 because they were great a just 2 or two concepts but we're severely lacking in various other departments ,example multifaceted subject matter ,or elite lyrical talent . 1 Nass 2 Rhakim ,3 Krs 1 ,4 Big Daddy kane 5 Scar Face ,6 Pac ,7 LL Cool J ,8 Ice Cube 9 Biggie 10 G Rap 11 AZ 12 Beenie Segel 13Slick Rick 14 50 Cents 15 Game 16 Jadah Kiss 17 TI 18 Mase 19Will Smith 20 Biz Markie 21Bustah Rhymes 22 Ghost Face 23 Eminem 24Kool Moe Dee 25Grand Master Caz . 26Lauryn Hill 27SnoopDog 28 Styles p 29Gza ,30 Cormega . Rhakim is arguably the greatest MC of all time ,the paid in full album is the blue print that every MC has utilized some content and context from after it's debut in 86 ,it is the most influential album.right down from it's cover in Hip Hop History ,and Rhakim is the most impactful MC in Hip Hop History ," sorry 2 Pac and Em fanatics " .. Rhakim regardless of where if you select Nass or Pac above him isn't lower then 3 onthe all time lists ,Rhakim was far more lyrical gifted then Pac with just as expanded social , African American ethnic culturally platform .Rhakims highly underrated the master and 18 letter albums just like JayZ 's reasonable doubt are incredible works of art that if a new artists had made those would have been crowned the new best MC in Hip Hop .

Rakim was one of the first, if not the first rapper to speed up the cadence and have more complicated rhyme schemes. He might be quoted the most of all MC's. Def top 10.
Current emcees with depth, spirituality & lyrical density would be Locksmith.
Yall definitely need to check out Lyrics of Fury and Microphone Fiend also Don't Sweat the Technique(Other Eric B.& Rakim classics)
Another MC to peep is Big L- known as the punchline king(1995 freestyle w/Jay-Z
Devil's Son
1998(solo freestyle) are a few examples
Name me another rapper who can word play like Rakim? Nobody! Good reaction!
Rakim changed hip hop with one song “Check Out My Melody in the mid 80’s. He was first to spit simply complexed lyrical slow flow and taught emcees how to ride the beat. What y’all need to listen to is Mahogany that will give you a different perspective on how to interact with a woman. If you built for it at least. Y’all keep ya wave 🌊
He's up there... top 3. Clearly an originator, with a sick flow and super creativity. You want an Old School killa... Check out Gangstar. Skillz, Mass Appeal and Ex to the Next. Good energy fellas.
This is the first song my son learned all the words to..."I'm still #1" Boogie Down Productions is worth a listen..
cant forget to check out ''Big Daddy Kane'' he is also on the same level as rakim from his era with tracks like '' r.a.w'' & ''set it off'' & ''warm it up kane''
Wow…never see someone name the same 3 tracks I would’ve.
Bigups
They call Rakim ''The God'' because he was the first lyricist to add rhythm to rhymes. You have to remember that album dropped in 1986-87, AND NO CURSING! It's funny to see young cats' reactions.
Rakim is the Well Spring from which all the Rap that followed after him, was heavily influenced by! His style and flow was unmatched then and even today! That's also why he is largely regarded as the GOAT in the Hip Hop Rap Game! Rakim came from a Musical🎶 family and actually played the Saxophone🎷when he was younger. That's a major reason why his rhymes schemes and bars where ahead of his time! Rakim understood Music🎶 and how to fit rhymes into the Bars with timing and rhythm like a trained Musician!🎷
Amazing reaction playas. My second favorite rapper next to the g.o.a.t 🐐 👑 nas.do divine sounds what people do for money.word up son
That's why he's called the God. Rakim is what a mc is founded on.
My favorite Rakim joint.
Rakim- Move the Crowd
Rakim is number 1 in my opinion. Should be in every top 10 rapper list.
