When Rakim hit, he changed rap in a way that not too many people acknowledge. In the beginning, MC's would always rap in a higher octave than their normal voice. Rakim came along and everyone found out it was ok to rap closer to their normal range. Ice-T and The Fresh Prince are prime examples! Rakim is simply a legend!
I'm from New York and when Rakim came out, he blew up the scene. The way he flowed, nobody could flow like that back in the day. He laid the groundwork for Nas, Jay Z, and other rappers past and present. He flowed by using metaphors and rhymes that were unheard of back then. His style was just superior to everyone back then. Music becomes dated with each generation, but if you play his music today, it'll still sound good. His music is timeless and when they mention the GOAT, he is the Goat. Listen to My Melody and listen to him spit those bars. That song was banging in everyone's cars that summer in New York. The man was gifted so to put other rappers before him is a joke.
I saw an interview with Rakim once, and a person in the audience stated to him that he was one of the hardest mc's but he hardly ever curses on his records and asked why?, Rakim simply stated that he doesn't curse because his parents listens to his music. You should definitely check out the "Microphone Fiend"
This guy is the reason that Run DMC, Fat Boys & all the old school people that came before him couldn't release any more music. Rakim never cursed, and he was only 19 when he did this. The definition of the modern emcee. He literally changed the game.
They all released music after Rakim. They all had hits. He was better but they were good. Rakim is the reason that fake gangsta rappers were called out and held to a hire standard. One of the reasons anyway.
THE GREAT RAKIM ALLAH! THE GREATEST MC TO EVER TOUCH THE MIC! Review..."MOVE THE CROWD" Keep up the good work. I enjoy what you young BROTHERS are doing.
Y’all got it bro, back then you walk up on a video shoot, remember…our MCs were vetted through rocking parties or winning talent shows, if you didn’t have the support of your community it was tough to make it, you won support from other communities by winning shows or rocking parties in their hood, our taking out their rappers in lyrical combat.
I have drifted my car to " Follow the Leader " more than once, but the theme song from Juice with the same name , or " Paid in Full " might be my persoanl Favorites.
The whole theme of this song was no joke, no smiling, no comedian, it’s all serious. He held that concept through the whole song and even the no smiling in the video. “Deep concentration cause I’m no comedian, jokers are wild if you want to be tamed, I treat you like a child and ya gonna be named.”
their joint that killed the underground was "check out my melody". you'll better understand the reference to '21 emcees ate up at the same time'. while rakim and krs-one rightfully get credit for changing the game lyrically, before them was T-La Rock's "It's Yours". the true origin of the beats-and-rhyme era, imo.
You gotta play My Melody. And thanks for showing this generation how others paved the way for today. You guys are straight-up doing dope things. Keep it up!
I've watched a lot of reaction videos of this song and yall take on it is by far the best. Yall were the first ones I saw that recognized Flava Flav and that won me over. Keep up the great work! I'm liking and subscribing 👍
He is legendary. He is known as the Godfather of hip-hop. That's the rap. I miss that's the rap. I enjoy hip hop from the passion and the heart, not for the fame and glory
THESE LEGENDS WERE NO SECRET IN MY ERA OF RAP! ERIK B knew what to play on all there tracks. RAKIM IS CALLED THE GOD MC. I CALL HIM LYRICIST ICON... HIS BARS CAN FILL A VAULT
Yo, that shit you like with them going out into the community performing... that's the essence of Hip Hop! That's how ALL this shit started. In that first verse he said "... now you figure you're ready for the neighborhood tour". That's exactly how it was. Once you got your crew and your style you started going out performing block parties and shit. That's how you got known before the internet and all that. You and your DJ and your setup. Word of mouth got you famous
thought about what you said about Eric B & Rakim getting out in the community. Have to remember this was pre internet. The only way to get your music out you had to go directly to public or get heard on the radio which was extremely hard, especially for rap being so new. There wasn't as much on TV or 24/7 sports so you got out and did things to occupy your time.
That famous area in the street is Jamaica Avenue, AKA (The Ave). Jamaica Queens, NY. You can get your clothes, jewlery, sneakers.....etc. Almost like a flea market.
Y’all said come out in the community in the streets and rap… they can’t they will die!!! These youngsters bustin on ya!!! Back then we didn’t have that!!!
Even though the music was more positive back in our day heads were still trying to be "tough" and/or "serious" so that's why you don't see a lot of smiling...not just Eric B. lol.
I'm from Jamaica Queens. Back then the popular rappers used to be out on Jamaica Avenue or in the parks at the neighborhood jams. A LOT of the rappers used to hang out in front of my high school too. Pepa from Salt n Pepa went to my high school.
Great channel! Some suggestions 1. Spoonie Gee - Godfather 2. Salt n Pepa - my Mic sounds nice 3. Cool C - Glamorous Life 4. The Group Home - Living Proof 5. Special Ed - Magnificent 6. Self destruction 7. Smooth da Hustler - Broken Language
This is true.... Eric B has never smiled. In fact all the dudes that you saw in the video were called.. the paid in full crew... real Street dudes real hustlers
The rappers that most people consider the best, consider Rakim the best
1987!!! This is the song that jumpstarted the Golden Era
Eric B. & Rakim - Follow The Leader 1988

Rakim "When I b on the mic"🎤
That 3rd verse still give me the chills 🐐The first 2 albums are legendary.
I saw an interview with Rakim once, and a person in the audience stated to him that he was one of the hardest mc's but he hardly ever curses on his records and asked why?, Rakim simply stated that he doesn't curse because his parents listens to his music.
You should definitely check out the "Microphone Fiend"

@@perspectiveoutlook1540in compliance with his MCing ability. There are other 5 percenters in Hip Hop who AREN'T revered as God MCs.
This guy is the reason that Run DMC, Fat Boys & all the old school people that came before him couldn't release any more music. Rakim never cursed, and he was only 19 when he did this. The definition of the modern emcee. He literally changed the game.

YASSSSSS!!!! WHAT YOU SAID!!! MAN MY BROTHER INTRODUCED ME TO HIP HOP ....as a female it's not expected...but I just can't quit it!!! LOL
That line alone is why no one wanted beef with Rakim.
True so they can understand what means when he says "or you'll be 1 of those 7 MCs."
We used to throw our hands in the air and dance to this joint
His lyricism is almost unparalleled.
You gotta play My Melody. And thanks for showing this generation how others paved the way for today. You guys are straight-up doing dope things. Keep it up!

Y’all got to do “Follow the Leader”by Eric B and Rakim. And then try to follow it…..
Top 5 Emcee of all time
Back in the day hiphop was grass roots and DIY. They didn’t have budgets like today. What they did have was their neighborhood.
It`s true, I`ve never seen Rakim nor Erib B smile ever. In Rakim`s interviews and everything he has never smiled up to today.
I would love to see reactions to groups like U.T.F.O and Whodini.
Hip Hop moment, YA club in New Bedford,Mass. When this came on everybody LOST their Minds!!!!!!
"Ain't nobody smiling" 5% Nation believes if you're smiling you're asleep.
The house parties in the 90's, to this type of rap music was fire. Everybody was dancing.
Eric B. never smiles in videos or pictures.
... summer of '88 in Gothenburg, Sweden, this album was rockin' the clubs like nobody's-business.
Y’all said come out in the community in the streets and rap… they can’t they will die!!! These youngsters bustin on ya!!! Back then we didn’t have that!!!

Still a banger and a classic to this day!
They wasn’t smiling because it was a battle song for Big Daddy Kane.
