Rakim is to hip hop what John Coltrane was to jazz, or Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar. He completely changed the direction of the artform and elevated it on a technical level way beyond where he found it. Everyone who came after him is a disciple.🎤
Very well said!!
That's a fact. Rakim#1 everyone else fighting for a distant second place plaque
his influence can't be underestimated. Compare Public Enemy's first two albums. The first one was before Rakim hit it and the second one was after Rakim and PE had totally changed their approach, especially in terms of the depth of their sampling. They saw the writing on the wall and followed the leader.
Absolute 100% facts!
Not to mention Rakim made you feel like he meant every word without cussing. His style blends seamlessly with the beat like another instrument! Peace to the legend and God MC Rakim! 💯
Yes indeed! Without cursing! 👊🏾
That’s because Rakim was a saxophone player as a child and used to idolize John Coltrane. He saw how JC used techniques to fill space, and he knew that the way music is structured, he could fill in that space with syllables the way Coltrane would. So it’s another example of an artists using the meta from one medium and bringing it to the next. It’s genius.
@@biglex42 thank you for sharing that!👑
@@biglex42 Absolutely!! , coming from a musical -based family that includes jazz artist Ruth Brown, you can comprehend that he becomes one with the music , hypnotizing the listener with clear , on the beat vocals.Just like the 80’s saw the best of basketball, you can add rap. Period!!
The face you made just after the first verse, is the face 'old heads' like myself still make at Rakim's verses. Another great reaction!!
The last verse on this song amazes me to this day
Rakim has incredible timing. His lyrics flow with the beat so effortlessly.
"I'm the arsenal" - greatest opening line to any track ever.
Bruh this song crazy af rakim definitely was in his bag 🎒
In my opinion Rakim is the greatest rapper that ever lived. Incredible word play and delivery. Super talented.
Pure facts big homie and no cap
God MC is 💯 percent correct! You gotta hit up ‘Follow the Leader’ and ‘Lyrics of Fury’ if you haven’t yet!✌🏻
That whole disc!
lyrics of fury gives me chicken skin rakim the lyrical king
Eric B & Rakim's first three albums are all classics. Paid In Full, Follow the Leader and Let the Rhythm Hit Em. This album received 5 mics in The Source. The previous two weren't featured because The Source magazine didn't launch until the fall of 1988, but they're universally recognized as classics, as well. Nearly all modern emceeing flows from Rakim. He is call the God MC, because his 5% name is Rakim Allah, which translates to From the Lord, God.
There is another track on this album called "No Omega". Rakim goes for about 4 minutes straight!!! If I'm correct, there's an LL diss in there too!
MY 13 year old son "heard follow the leader" and said. Pops, "I felt hypnotized"...
“I Know You Got Soul”
Was the first single I heard back in ‘86, before the album dropped and remains in my top 5 Rakim tracks.
Ok since you're here
Rakim "My Melody" Young King
Big 🔥
Big Daddy Kane Breathe control is ALL TIME 🐐
You are a lier about BDK
His Flow is sick!
Rakim was way before his time I'm so glad that now people can see that
Rakim was the creator of that flow. He changed the way rappers rap.
Mastery of the art.
No one at eighteen years old ,in music was this articulate ever!😂
All hip hop that was realeased from the second half of 1986 up until owes a debt to Eric B & Rakim whether they know it or not....who else has had that type of an impact on hip hop?....In the 80’s when people talked about the GOAT it was 3 maybe 4-5 names that always came up :Rakim,G Rap & Kane & in some circles LL & the old heads stuck with Kool Moe Dee....this was before Nas ,Biggie & Jay had even released a demo
Rakim revolutionized flows and brought modern rhyming to hip hop. G Rap came a few years later and did his thing, too.
Rakim def revolutionized flows, but Kool G Rap came out the same year: 1986. He did "It's A Demo" in '86, but it took a few years for his album to come out. He was featured on a few songs and had some singles out in '87 and was ghostwriting for some of the Juice Crew members.
@@user-dz6fy6qv2l All facts. However, while Eric B. & Ra were exploding in '86, I feel like G Rap & Polo didn't really catch fire until "Poison" in 1988. (Although, for me, as a bad ass kid, "Rikers Island" was the one!) And, then, of course "Road to the Riches" really blew them up. Appreciate your hip hop knowledge!
@@verbone No doubt. I definitely rocked Kool G when he first came out. That Riker's Island song was pretty hard for it's time and It's A Demo was a NYC classic, especially the 87 remix that added the "I Know You Got Soul" sample. Kool G's buzz really came from the "Raw" demo that was leaked on Mr Magic's radio show. Then The Symphony came out and his verse BODIED everyone else's (IMO). That led to Road To The Riches and the rest is history.
@@user-dz6fy6qv2l g rap had kane write his verse for the symphony track,,,he’s not on Rakim’s level
@@verbone g rap had kane write his verse on the symphony track
You got the chills, bruh! Enjoyed this one. “In the Ghetto (Extended Mix)(has to be the Extended Mix!)” from this same album is IMO the greatest rap song ever made. I know I’m not the only person who thinks that either (e.g. Saigon). I’d recommend the video (which Nas picked on his 20 favorite videos when BET used to do that with different artists back in the day-the highest rap song on his list besides “The Message”) but VEVO cut it short on RUclips for some reason. Epic video.
The MC, MCs want to be.
Man.!! I’m so honored that you’re experiencing raw, uncut, real Hip Hop in your reaction journey. Good Metal and Rock too. Respect! My man.! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🤙🏼💪🏽
Yo, if you're doing Rakim, you gotta do Rakim "the 18th letter" you won't be disappointed.
Great reaction again! 🔥 Yeah, Rakim is one of my favorite rappers of all time. A really incredible rapper. Now you MUST react to "My Melody" next. It's maybe my favorite Hip-Hop song ever. Trust me, you will be blown away by this song. It's truly incredible! 🔥🔥🔥 Please make it your next Rakim reaction.
You can review anything with Rakim’s name on it and you won’t go wrong.
I was wondering why you didn't go live My G 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️😄 That Versus Was Epic 💯💯 Peace To The God M.C Rakim The Lyricial Metaphor Beast
Since you can appreciate lyrical skills you MUST listen to:
Canibus - Poet Laureate Infinity (1000 bars, All layers, original beat)
It's long but I'd like to see you react to it. It's the epitome of lyricism.
Canibus is definitely a student of Rakim and had the privilege of interviewing him for the Source in 98/99 and later did a collabo with him on his 2nd album.. Props to the lyricists, a dying art..
Canibus rips the mic!!! I agree. 2000 bc
Rakim INVENTED flow. That’s why he’s the God MC, there was none before him doing that.
@@Jay-iu4st kane started after Rakim…kane ain’t debut until 87, Ra had stuff in 86
@@Jay-iu4st KMD Kool Moe Dee!
Peace! Actually KMD invented flow and Rakim extended that style in ‘86
Rakim was my guy. Dude was insane
If it wasn't for him it "probably " wouldn't be no nas/az/wu tang. Dude sat the bar so high in the 80s
Now you see what us old hands be talking about when we speak about hip-hop! Do you understand why it’s hard for us to listen to somebody’s dues today! Because we grew up on lyrics in bars like this! I’m glad you appreciate it young brother this is my first time seeing your page and I’m loving your reactions! Keep listening young man, keep listening! and P.S. I got chills with you as well!😂😂
I respect your ear. That how i felt when i heard this in the 90's
double entendre! He is speaking about his lyrics disemboweling the competition. He is referencing that lyrics are like a gun like a drug. It is done so seamlessly that anyone can mistake it for thinking that he talking about using a gun or drugs. Especially during that drug era when that was a consistent reference point used by most other mcs including my favorite of all time...Kool G Rap. RAKIM top five dead or alive!
Rakim was a "Five Percenter" in the Nation of Islam,, He took that very seriously. For him it was about Knowledge, Wisdom and Supreme Understanding. He was like Farrakhan but on a streets level. Plus cursing on a track didn't really come to like gangster rap days.
Rakim Allah is on a whole different level than any MC past, present, and future. He’s your favorite rapper favorite rapper
Great to see that you been blessed with the GOD MC Rakim. His rhyme style was smooth, calculated but lethal. He wasn't just throwing intelligent words together for the sake of it...HE WAS DROPPIN' SCIENCE. Only 2 other brothers can be in his circle and that's G-Rap and Kane'. You should react to Rakim's Know The Ledge and Ghetto...CLASSIC RAKIM! Keep up the good work...njoying the videos.
Know The Ledge was the jewel of the Juice soundtrack.
One of the 3 Kings of Hip Hop! Along with Nasty Nas and KRS ONE!
NAS ain’t from that era your buggin
@@themightyfp didn't say he was. I said the Kings of Hip Hop are Nas, KRS-1, and Rakim! Regardless of Era, age, or time zone, they're they're 3 best ever
Yeah this track got that "Night on Bald Mountain", "Assembly Line" beat and "Do the Funky Penguin" grunt. No need to remix it...!
I got the chills … watching you get the chills! That’s how good Rakim is.
Great choice. This is my favorite Rakim song.
Nas and rakim is the g.o.a.t.s. 🐐. 👑.my 2 favorite mcs ever.word up son
MF DOOM is up there as well.✌🏻
100
Gregory netus I seriously agree with you 150 percent…real talk
Yo - masters of the craft! "Don't Sweat the Technique" was what jumped off SO HARD in like 92 or 93 - helped turn me on to hip hop in general even though after their prime era in the history it is still my favorite track they ever did and was a monster on DC hip hop stations - we had 2 big stations that DID NOT PLAY and they exposed us to everything man - plus our own stee Go-Go (not so much on the radio, ha, but then you'd hear it - no become part of a mass experience - live in an alley after the club at 3am downtown and THEN it all clicked)
Do a reaction to Dave East
I’ll say what I always say. Rakim is most likely your favorite mc’s favorite Mc. Like I know Nas, biggie, etc etc..they all loved Rakim.
Rakim -As the ryhme goes on !!
Black moon who got the props word up son
Been a loooong time, but STILL know ALL(most) of the lyrics! This ONE song, has MORE LYRICS, than an ENTIRE ALBUM TODAY! Great reaction!
The GOD mc...a true legend!!!
Got mad respect for RA, bars, morals been with his wife fifi since high school. Real high character dude right there!
Bro, this is the hardest. best rap song ever made. You gone have to play this one back over and over.
Look.. We all agree Nas is incredible.. When he came out They said he was the 2nd coming of Rakim.. This is one of the thousand reasons why.. This dude birthed Nas.. The 18th Letter The 'R'...
Rakim is the Goat. Rap has two eras pre Rakim and Post Rakim
The key to understanding Rakim's greatness isn't just listening to his music and lyrics. Look at when he released his first album. Then, listen to ANY artist that came before him. He completely changed the way people rapped. FACTS!!!
I remember hearing this when they had "Rapmania" on TV in the early 90's...Rakim was just smooth with it.
Peace To The Gods! The God said “Your blood 🩸 pressure rises ya damn near lost it; hit the ground burning 🔥 then woke up ⬆️ frost bit”!!! Play it back and listen 🎧 again young man..
That’s why he’s the GOD Rakim!
Rakim has incredible time. He's so in the pocket you don't even realize how complex he gets.
My Fav Rapper. Period!
Period! TRUE
The God M.C. No one comes close.
Mobb Deep feat. Rakim,
"Hoodlum"
Eric B &Rakim were some of the slickest rappers of the old school dayz. When you have sometime go back and listen to GURU also, flow is kind of like Rakim. I like that you going back and listening to the originators!
Bi Up and much Respect you Brother!!
Fist MC to rhyme multiple syllables and words. Before only the last one word rhymed.
the goat
YOU GOTTA DO "THE PUNISHER!"...YOU IN FOR A REALLLL TREAT!!!
He was saying this ain't no .38, but let the rhythm hit him point blank and watch his body radiate. Only in Know The Ledge (Juice), he talks about a real gun because of the theme of the movie, but Rakim gun was always his Rhymes and beats.
Untouchable deserves a reaction. It's like this but with a smooth beat.
Like he said "i cursed kid like the pyramids when they found the style "
Rakim is the GOAT
Rakim made it seem so effortless and too easy.
Bro also do KRS-One featuring channel live
One of the best hip hop songs of all-time. Peace to the God Rakim Allah.
I also nearly couldn't hold back my tears the first time I heard this.
Holy shit it's been over 30 now.
Fav rapper all time and still get chills too...
