Im Thai and I understand Esan Thai dialect which is really similar to Laos. Mr. Suk (สัก is a normal name in Thai and Laos) was saying "กินเข้าแล้วเจ้าสิไปไส" (Gin khao laew chao si pai sai) = "Where would you go after you done eating" but food=เข้า=Khao and knee=เข่า=Khao and the translator got it wrong. The second time he said "ข่อยถ่าเจ้ากินเข้าก่อน" (khoy tar chao gin khao gorn) = " I'll wait for you to eat ". He was being nice but the translator really sucks at Laos language
Ye bro but same would happen for thai language or not? As far as i know as foreigner northern thai almost everyone speak laos language? Anyway, thanks for translation.
Part 2 of the Vietnam trip. For another view of this journey through Vietnam with footage I did not capture please visit the RUclips channels: Tim K and Backpacker Ben. Great riding with you guys.
I feel bad for Mr. Sack. He was trying to be friendly and was going to wait until Bald was done eating, but internet translators aren’t really the best. Bald definitely missed out on having drinks with Mr. Sack, and making a new friend.
I rented a motorbike and had a trip across Vietnam years ago. I accidentally broke the gate of a wedding once when they were getting ready. However, they did not blame me or ask me to compensate, but all gathered to ask if I was injured. then they invited me to stay for their wedding party. It was a wonderful memory I will never forget.
@@rinodb83 What people have never seen or experienced, they will consider it to be a legend. I recommend you come to VN and experience, then you will see how specific that legend is. In any country there are bad people and good people, you haven't met good people but that doesn't mean there aren't. If you think this commemorative story of mine is a legend, there are indeed many more thrilling legends in Vietnam. lol
As a Lao-American… I am greatly amused at that interaction. Mr Suck was trying to ask you where you were heading after you had your beer, because he was trying to take you to your next destination. Funniest miscommunication ever 😂
I love how you are not only showing us new countries, city's and places. But also telling us about the history of all the places you visit. The combination of the video with the background information you provide us is pure gold! I really enjoy watching these video's mr Bald :)
As a Thai, who understands Lao (our languages are scary similar), the interaction with Mr.Suck (Sak) was top tier lost in translation comedy. Edit: sorry guys here’s what Suck was saying and tried to use the app to translate. “Kneel down and where do you go” = where are you going after you’re done eating. “I want you to eat it/white lips/server (not clear)” = I’ll wait for you to finish eating. He was prolly waiting to take Bald to his secret sucky lair. Edit 2: Suck is actually a pretty common name around these parts. 1) It’s the common name for a type of VERY HARD wood tree (kinda fitting). 2) It also means tattoo.
Hi bald, the "trans" flag is actually the Buddhist flag that is commonly hung around temples throughout the country, the "tail" is actually just sweet pork sausage (if the picture is clear enough), and lastly google translation was not your friend when it came to trying to communicate with Mr Sak (Suck) lmao. "Pubs" would only really exist in the bigger city like the capital Vientiane, I hope you would visit deeper in my motherland. If you were to travel deeper to Laos, I recommend Luang Prabang the northern city which was the old capital, full of old temples and architect. the Southern Province of Pakse, famous for the coffee plantation, a lot of water fall and nice scenery. I would recommend you use Googel translation from english to Thai as our lao language is almost identical to Thai, where most Laotian would understand Thai, and the Thai translation is a lot more developed than the Lao language
I don't know why but bald just sitting down at a random families lunch and though they didn't understand english welcomed him and refused any money really struck a cord with me. The country may not be the most glorious but the people seem so great.
Bald has more than a few of his facts wrong too. Is Bald biased or something? Because each time he states an untrue fact, it's always in favor of the Left-leaning narrative.
I've crossed into Laos without a visa on a local boat and had an interesting conversation with the border police, stunned that I was just being a tourist with wallet, passport and camera in my pocket they discussed the situation and decided that because I could not produce a photograph for the visa on arrival I could just pay a fine and then be stamped into the country for the day, I stayed about an hour or two - the fine was less than $2.
@@billyzee261 they were probably wearing them before the pandemic cause there’s so much disease there and bad air quality especially in China and big cities.
I don’t usually make comments on videos but your narrations are hilarious. Also love the historical background of the places you visit. Thank you for enduring the brutal realities of traveling to give us less adventurous folk a glimpse at other nations.
The "brutal realities" are really not that bad. Most people travel by bus (driving at top speed at oncoming traffic to pass slightly slower vehicles on a two lane road ... but you get used to that). Most of their misery was in traveling by bike in a rather unpleasant season. And the experience of everything being so new and interesting makes enduring a little hardship not so difficult. You feel accomplished just making it to your hotel for the night, getting in a good meal and cracking a beer to top it all off. Never tasted better.
This guy makes me want to pack a bag and just travel. This is the feeling of freedom most first world people yearn for. Yeah places like the UK have health care, education etc but most of us be sheep stuck in captive routines. We have the ideology we are free but our whole lives revolve around chasing finances & balancing responsibilities.
As a Vietnamese here we learned freedom only worth if there are happiness, which even we poor or struggle in our life, we still keep living and happy about who we are
Get out there! Nothing will make you feel alive and better than experiencing the world. Best part about it? Once you see the world? You then really start to really appreciate all the mundane things of home.

Cảm ơn bạn đã đến thăm đất nước của chúng tôi. Hi vọng tương lai bạn có thể quay trở lại du lịch tại Việt Nam. Mọi người luôn chào đón và giúp đỡ bạn trong chuyến du lịch
It's a Vietnamese custom to always invite everyone around you to eat if you're having a meal. Usually people are expected to decline, but Bald didn't know, and they didn't seem to mind
Pretty fun that he just walked up and got a free beer. I think they did mind though, if they wanted him to stay longer, they'd cheers with him every minute or so.
Vietnamese love to drink with everyone and will even go as far as to put food in your bowl without even asking. Their customs of welcoming guests, but the old man seemed to just not understand baldy and it can become quite frustrating for older people. I learned that if they don't cheers with you, they probably just want to talk about their life and not have to be interrupted by someone younger than them speaking a language they don't understand.
That's a very big statement. I'll admit it's good but 'peak bald'.... Do you remember the hunt for the Buran with Alinchik and all other videos from the former Soviet states.

20:55 As a former U.S. Marine that served long after the Vietnam War I couldn’t agree more. When I traveled to the Mekong Delta we visited a the home of a former Viet Cong fighter who said it best when I expressed my shock at how accommodating and friendly Vietnamese people are to Western tourists “We won the war and got the outcome we had all dreamed of” and that made me realize exactly why we in the U.S. ONLY think of the war when we hear Vietnam while Vietnamese people have all but forgotten it.
Chiến thắng, you are full of sh…t. Did the South Vietnamese ever forgive the north Vietnamese for invading their country? American was there to help an allied who was invaded by the north Vietnam, China and Russia. The communist history book is full of crap and you all have been brainwashed by the communist party.
@Chiến Thắng In Canada, there is a famous phrase "Lest we forget". The suffering and sacrifices of the past must never be forgotten if we hope to prohibit them in the future.
Omg it was so hilarious watching him sit down at some random person’s home and they gave him beer and curry 😂 Must be family style 😂 They were so friendly and just cracked open a beer for him. He walks away not knowing what the hell just happened bc he can’t speak Vietnamese and they didn’t speak English. I love these vids! Some moments are so memorable that I talk about them to this day like I was there😅
Wonderful to see, the kindness and hospitality of the Vietnamese people. How Stranger Mr. Bald was welcomed at the dining table by those Vietnamese gentlemen, without asking getting beer and food. And they absolutely did not want money for this. What a sincere hospitality, beautiful and how Mr. Bald portrays this.😢 So much respect for those friendly Vietnamese people

Your show gives an invaluable lesson nowadays which is giving people a different perspective on life. People have become so entrenched in ideology and group think that stepping out and exploring the world really puts things into perspective. That train you were on was actually pretty flash by Vietnam standards. Took the overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa at it was straight out of the 1950s, no air con either and it was 40c most days. However we met a guy on the train who invited us to his wedding and we were the only westerners there out of about 500 people. Their generosity and hospitality to strangers is just amazing. My favourite place to travel without a doubt - Laos is worth delving into more.
i took the sleeper bus, it doesn't get much better there. I didn't fit into the sleeping compartment, and you don't get to sleep as the driver is honking 24/7 and you are being rocked around like a ball in a pinball machine.

Regarding your comments about My Lai... I am from NYC but living in Saigon the past 30 years where I remain. Ten years ago I went to My Lai where at the infamous ditch the Vietnamese made a simple memorial being casted footprints along the ditch representing normal life as it would have been the day of the massacre. The person who stopped the massacre was a helicopter pilot by the name of Hugh Thompson who threatened to shoot anyone who continued to hamper his efforts to save some individuals. He went back around 2003 and met with someone he rescued being an older lady by that time. She asked Thompson a question that amazed me because the more obvious question would have been, "Why did they do this"?. But she asked him why he did NOT do what the others had done. That question really threw him... Anyway... I really enjoy your content!
No surprise to me. In Thailand one always gets invited to share lunch when walking through the villages. No food banks in Thailand because there is plenty of food.
Just got back from Vietnam 4 days ago, the people there are incredibly nice. We stayed at a few homestays where a family took us in and coked for us... I will never forget it. I highly recommend Vietnam!
@36:11, that’s the Vietnamese hospitality. You can pretty much go to anybody’s house and be invited for a meal or drinks. Vietnam still lacks plenty of things but hospitality is not one of them !
Vietnam is hands down a must tick off country for everyone to visit, i can't even describe how much i enjoyed it, From the people to the night life... was unbelievable.
Vientiane, Laos. I never knew what to expect, even though we had just come from The Philippines and Thailand. I never imagined it to be so barren but I admired how kind everyone was to us. I looked up the Nation's wikipedia history and saw it was only two paragraphs ‘long’ and I understood. Bombed to shit by the US and lots of unrest. Anyways, that night my friends and I go to find a bar, but nothing was open as we walked for ages. Everything closed so early and was so dark, even on a saturday night. Eventually we find what looks like a backyard with a fridge, some tables essentially, but there's people and beer. Safe to say we drank. Getting back was lengthy, considering we got lost. We walked for so long we gave up on finding the hostel, we were exhausted atp, and wanted food instead. Noodles to be precise. After ages, we were saved when a ladyboy police officer(?) drives by and takes us to some food stands nearby. They drove off without asking a question, an angel nonetheless. Still, our hostel was out of reach, but as we kept walking we hear voices and stumble across a closed outdoor plaza where a bunch of workers are drinking and kicking back. They invited us to a couple drinks and we accepted. A while later they drove us back to our hostel on bikes and didn't ask for money at all (though ofc we gave them some, angels). A lot happened in so little. [More in next comment]
Another time in Laos on the same trip involved more of nothing and was by far the craziest experience I had on my trip. My friends and I left for Hanoi by Bus, which took about 24 hours. As we left Laos that evening I was wondering what Vietnam would be like, though I didn't find out. After 12 hours, the bus arrives at the border our entry permissions are checked. My dumbass had messed up the visa process and was surely denied entry. But then again, there were more travellers with us and 2 others were in the same situation. Still, we had to trek up a paved hill in the cool, foggy, forested mountains to the most Soviet-era looking building I have ever laid eyes on. The other 2 travellers pay $2-4 for their stamps, but I am requested to pay $200. As a broke graduate atp I had no choice but to leave. I ran out to the bus to grab my bag before it went through the border. I got on the bus and grabbed my bag. Although the driver and guards must have thought everyone was off the bus because it started to go through the checkpoint. I contemplated staying on the bus but feared the repercussions of being caught at another checkpoint. I ran out, technically on Vietnamese soil, and met up with my friends. After I started explaining to them, a guard noticed and started shouting at me. Quickly, we set up a plan of where to meet in Hanoi and I was escorted out of Vietnam and back to Laos on a bus for 12 hours back. When I was off the bus after letting the thoughts and emotions run through my head for 12 hours, I had a huge BeerLao and bowl of noodles. Ended up getting lost trying to find the a sim card after returning to the hostel from before again!! because everything was closed. Navigated back using the offline 'Places' feature on the iPhone to lead myself to there using the geolocation of older pictures. Was fucking insane. What is more insane is I booked an express visa and took the 24 hour bus again to Hanoi and made it through, reunited with my friends, got obliterated and ate bahn mi

It’s been about 15 years since I last was in Vietnam (and Lao) but it remains one of my favorite destinations. Vietnamese people are great in general 👍🏻
I finally left the country, from the USA, for the first time 3 weeks ago! I went to Jaco, Costa Rica with my boyfriend. The first two days were a huge culture shock to me because I barely speak Spanish and most of the people where we were didn’t speak much English. But people were so incredibly nice & most people took out their phone and did the google translate speech to text like Mr. Suk, lol, if there was any confusion. I’d love to travel with you, Bald. That’s my kind of traveling. My boyfriend needs a schedule & is more cautious about things, so we didn’t get to explore/connect with locals as much as I would’ve liked to. Such a great experience; though. If I didn’t hate flying, I’d travel outside the US way more. I’ve traveled all over the states though.
I want to Jaco like a decade ago when I was 20. There's a beautiful spot called Playa Hermosa where are the beaches are incredible and the mountains meet the ocean. We stayed in a hotel right in front of the beach and had a in pool bar where we watched the Copa America. I think it was the year Germany beat Brazil like 9 to 3 or something like that. Great experience, and luckily a lot of people in the inner city where the tourist traps and markets are spoke English
Another thing that is worth mentioning - wandering around in the middle of the night or any time of day - I never felt unsafe. Nobody is aggressive and you can go where you want without being accosted. Even in tourist places, they did not seem to push anything on you. Must go back and explore more - only spent 2 weeks there but it was epic.
Agreed, everyone just kind of leaves you alone in most of SE Asia, except a few very touristy spots. Only bad experience: a guy wanted to sell me sunglasses. I sort of wanted them, but not really. First he wanted the equivalent of $20. Then it was $10. Then $5. Then $2. Then when I wouldn't buy he just said "fuck you" and left. Other than that one single experience in two weeks of traveling in Vietnam and Cambodia, nothing but great people. Ran out of money at the end, though. Protip: Japanese bank cards don't work outside of Japan...
38:42 Gotta give a correction here. That's Binh Khanh bridge and it's not a part of the Chinese Beltway project but a part of the Vietnamese North-South expressway. It's funded through the Japanese ODA.
Yeah kind of a bad mistake. Vietnam really hates China and most foreign investment is fortunately coming from Japan and Korea, as well as some from France, Germany, and the US.

When I was in Hanoi, I did a guided street food tour. Some of the best food and cheap as chips. The young scooter guide took our group into a local bar, immediately I felt uncomfortable as we were typical tourists in T-shirts and shorts. All the Vietnamese were dressed to the nines. The men in suits and the women wearing almost ball gowns. An older gentleman invited us to their table and shared their table snacks. As we couldn’t speak Vietnamese and the gentleman’s group couldn’t speak English we just shook hands and smiled. The entertainment was locals reading poetry and singing, very cool. Now here’s the point of this long story. A year later I watched Oliver Stones Vietnam documentary. He interviewed a Vietcong fighter, who was proud of his military service and what he did, which I will not mention here. It was the bloke I met in the bar and the reason I remember is, he was the only Vietnamese man I ever saw with a perm. That aside the Vietnamese are the most accomodating and friendly people ever, even if like the gentleman, he could have been bitter and angry towards Europeans. But somehow has healed his pain to move forward.
It's crazy how nice people can be when they don't constantly have media and government telling them they are oppressed and victims that deserve reparations. 😊

⏩This series has been very emotional for me as a boomer who spent my entire childhood watching the war unfold on the nightly news, going to protests with my parents, and seeing friends drafted only to come home injured or traumatized or not come home at all. Later I dated a combat vet who fought in Cambodia and suffered from severe PTSD. He told me countless stories about the insane things that went on there. Ppl have no idea how chaotic and cruel war really is. To this day I feel a deep connection with Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. I don't think I would be so forgiving toward westerners if I were them.
*True Story:* during the Vietnam War, my dad was stationed at Udon Thani in northeastern Thailand. My mom moved onto base with him and brought my brother and me to live there. Our visas were about to expire, so my dad drove to the Laotian border to get our passports stamped. He said just get your passport stamped, and come right back. However, my mom saw a little market, and decided to do a little shopping. The people of the village had never seen little white-haired kids like we looked at that age, and gathered around to see us. Meanwhile, my dad was across the border, shitting bricks, with no way to check on us because he was active U.S. military. By the time we safely returned, our cabbie was passed out drunk, and he had to drive the car back home himself. Part of family lore for 50 years.
What I particularly like about this is that all three have made a video series about it and when you watch them all, it gets really interesting because you get a much more detailed insight into this journey and see the different perspectives. Well done!

What did he say though
What did Mr. Suck want? You can’t just say you speak Laotian and not say what he said
What did he say lol
Haha I feel bad for Mr Sak, he was just asking to eat rice 😂
Mr Suck? I’m not to that point yet… but you can’t make this stuff up… somebody is named Mr Suck??
You are a real bro. Good times and thanks for everything. 🤙

This is common is Southeast Asia. It would be rude to not invite someone to join you.

Just got back from Vietnam 4 days ago, the people there are incredibly nice. We stayed at a few homestays where a family took us in and coked for us... I will never forget it. I highly recommend Vietnam!
as a Vietnamese, thank you for visiting our country, mad respect
the mr. suck bit was one of the funniest moments ive seen on your journeys
What is more insane is I booked an express visa and took the 24 hour bus again to Hanoi and made it through, reunited with my friends, got obliterated and ate bahn mi
lol I really need to go have this kind of experience. I have a friend who lives in Thailand and says I am welcome anytime but I'm so anxious, I haven't traveled much in my life and it feels very intimidating.

@@collinmc90 If you have a friend to travel with that’s perfect, but it’s good to know your boundaries too. Experiencing any kind of travel like that can definitely burst the bubble of your world view, but it’s interesting to see for yourself what’s out there ya know? And if not now, then when? Honestly after my trip I would do it again just for food alone.
@@collinmc90 8 years ago I dropped everything and moved to Korea. It was supposed to be a 1-year trip but it ended up turning into 5. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world -- the trip where I departed Westbound from Ohio and returned going the same direction. You can bet there were a lot of mistakes and faux pas in there - I got lost more times than I can count, climbed Mt .Fuji, met my wife, and I grew up a lot.
My suggestion? Do it before you regret NOT doing it. Don't plan your days - be friendly (and cautious), and be willing to go where the tradewinds blow.

I worked 12 and a half hours today and coming home to get to watch this made it all worth it. I will one day travel like you homie. Keep on truckin 🫡
Well come to vietnam

I view hundreds of videos a month and your videos captivate me the most. I was in high school when my uncles came back from Vietnam. My mother always said, she wished they had all died there because that would have been more a humane way of dying than drinking themselves to death, for the things they witnessed. One of my uncles said he watched his best friend shoot a second lieutenant in the back of the head for trying to force his men to attack a village of women and children.
You watch a few hundred videos a month? Do you do anything other than watch youtube?
@@JustinSchwartz No, other than watch my caretaker empty out my bedpan, peer through the glass and watch my grandchildren play in the backyard and maybe on a good day I am blessed to have a one sided conversation with someone who has fooled himself into believing the world gives a rats ass about what he thinks.

What is a perm?

⏩This series has been very emotional for me as a boomer who spent my entire childhood watching the war unfold on the nightly news, going to protests with my parents, and seeing friends drafted only to come home injured or traumatized or not come home at all. Later I dated a combat vet who fought in Cambodia and suffered from severe PTSD. He told me countless stories about the insane things that went on there. Ppl have no idea how chaotic and cruel war really is. To this day I feel a deep connection with Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. I don't think I would be so forgiving toward westerners if I were them.
This is very true. I would feel awkward visiting there.
Do you remember any of it? What a story, either way
