The Amazon's Mysterious Chinese Village 🇵🇪

  • 🇵🇪 I was hitching a ride on a transport ship down the Amazon River in Peru when I started noticing people among the passengers who looked distinctly like the descendants of Chinese people. Many boarded and disembarked the ship at the various little jungle towns the ship stopped at until we reached the town of Alto Monte which was like something from a Hong Kong kung Fu movie. But who were these people and why were they dressed in robes and gowns? I disembarked to find out...
    Thanks to my amiga and chama Lucy for helping with subtitles on this journey 🇻🇪

      @@sandrakramer1520 True, but there were Japanese there much earlier, like the 1600's. The Portuguese brought many then as slaves, along with other Asian groups they purchased to work on their colonial possessions. There were later waves of immigration as you said. There was a hiccup during WW2 after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the US had the Peruvian authorities gather them up and deport them to internment camps in the US. Then, there were the Chinese contract workers starting in the 1900's and other waves of immigration.

    When I visited Lima, I was really struck by the large and colorful Chinatown district. Fantastic restaurants called "chifas". Some Peruvian cuisine is Chinese influenced. • @gonzaloloayza5396
      @gonzaloloayza5396 2 месяца назад +1

      Actually yes. They did offered incentives but not in the way you imagine. After the independence war in Peru, chinese people were offered jobs in those key sectors but once they got here, most were scammed into a form of "slavery" though they were paid workers. This system was called "Enclave" which meant that the worker was paid in advance a year salary but was only allowed to spent it in basic items that were sold by the same company that employed them in the first place. The products were so overpriced that in less than a year they would bankrupt and ask for more payment that they would pay with labor. This repeated over and over again so basically they were enslaved for years until the debt was paid. Most of them paid eventually and were "released" and moved to the cities along the railways in the country. Many opened restaurants because the food was nice and cheaper for the lower classes. The word "Chifa" comes from the cantonese phrase " Eat Rice"which was the way these inmigrants started to attract clients. Peruvians not knowing cantonese, just started to call them chifas and that name is still in use today.

    The Matsiguenka being something of an isolated tribe, probably has closer genetic ancestry to the first hunter-gatherers who came to the land from Asia 12,000+ years ago than the less isolated populations in Peru. The isolation has allowed their genetic features to remain as other populations interbred more widely with people of greater ethnic diversity. This is also why Native Americans in North America have Asian like features.
    Some cultures migrated across the land bridge of the Bering Strait, spreading south through North America. Others traveled by boat to South America and spread north from there. You're basically looking at a snapshot of humanities neolithic past when you see these people.

I think Peruvians are originated in a migration that crossed the Pacific in rafts from Asia. The indigenous who crossed the Bering Strait settled in North and Central America, and there was also a migration from northern Europe to North America and other unknown to the south, that story that there were only eight families is not accurate. There were several migrations in different periods, ending with the Spanish that although it does not leave mixed so much in Peru if it did in other places like Colombia.

They're little things in the grand scheme of things, but they have a big impact on the people you help. I fully believe in the butterfly effect in that regard. The guy you got a hammock for the voyage probably would have been much more exhausted and stressed with it. Which might have had all kinds of negative effects down the line.
