    I am always in the mood to try and find out new and different methods to growing orchids...some are a bit extreme to say the least but I believe is necessary to the discovery of what is truly capable...you never know until you try.

    That's really cruel...

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  7 лет назад

      Zachary Kenniston It can be considered that, but it really is no different than when people do a top cut to propagate their orchid, or cut off the keiki from the mother...it's a way and a technique of growing plants in general. The plant is alive and well today and is spiking.

    • @zacharykenniston748
      @zacharykenniston748 7 лет назад +1

      It's been proven that plants can feel pain like us. Their roots are their brains. If you could stick a nail into an animals neck to make it have babies, would you? Of course not. Just because you can get it to clone itself does not mean it's morally right. Just because the plant survived Does not mean it did not suffer agonizing pain when those nails were driven into its rhizome. I have many plants and they are just like pets to me. They are my friends and just because society does something for profit does not mean it's ethically or morally correct. Thank you for listening.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  7 лет назад

      Zachary Kenniston I got to ask you as a gardener/grower do you grow every single one of your plants by seed and by hand? ...because if you haven't, I am willing to bet you have some plants already in your collection that have went through some form of propagation whether it be through cloning, grafting, division...etc...There are some plants that would actually be extinct today if it were not for our capability to conserve through propagation. We are able to have majority of the orchids that we have today through propagation methods and without disturbing the plant population or destroying natural habitat for this reason...So there are many ways to look at this...so let's just say that we can agree to disagree and leave it at that. HAPPY GROWING! :)

    • @zacharykenniston748
      @zacharykenniston748 7 лет назад

      I care about all life forms and was not trying to be rude. I just think that despite the plants survival it probably suffered a lot. They have physical and emotional well being just like us animals. You should look up root brain theory... Putting a nail through its rhizomatous brain would certainly be agony for the vanda. And ripping away its be or would make it feel emotional anguish. They are just like animals and people. Why can't the world except it!?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  7 лет назад

      Zachary Kenniston I wasn't trying to be rude either but just like you gave me your perspective, I have a right to give you mine. ...and since you brought up the fact that you are concerned about ALL life forms and all of our food source eventually can be traced back to plants...what is your opinion on plant consumption for the sake of our survival...because we have to eat in order to live right? What makes it right to put our lives above theirs knowing that they must suffer and die in order for us to live? ...That's a serious and logical question...how do you feel about that because I am sure you've eaten plant life before or animal life that feeds off of plants or you wouldn't be alive today. ...and even taking plants from their natural habitat and cultivating them and forcing them to live under our conditions can also be viewed as a form of cruelty along with making them our "pets"...did anyone ask the plant if it wanted to be someone's pet and taken away from their home...we can go on and on with this...like I said, we can agree to disagree on certain things...I don't often do extreme propagation methods...but from time to time I will to further learn about what they are capable of...and in the end it is my choice on how I grow my orchids. I hope I didn't offend you...but again I also have the right to share my perspective.

    LOL, That Guy Vanda must have went to College, had a Million dollar a year Career, driving not a Ferrari(so clique') but an Aston Martin, be llightly tanned with signs of tautness, and over 5'9'' and willing to spend whatever a date desires to deserve such high praise. Dendrobiums must be the answer. Another plant that responds to the wound method is Clematis Vine. It will grow roots when scraped on the side facing down and then placed barely under soil and kept moist.Honeybees LOVE Clematis and are very spectacular blooms.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 лет назад +1

      LOL! ...yes there are many plants that respond to the wound treatment or by cutting the leaves or stems...those are indeed the plants I love. Many times when I go shopping for plants those are the ones I look for. I believe that you should only have to buy one plant and never buy them again with the propagation method. I wish it were that simple with orchids...I would save a whole lotta money! LOL!

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      Thank you...yes I thought this was a very interesting way of propagating...of course it is risky, but worth venturing out to see if this is yet another possible method of propagating. I am hoping that the injuries were only enough to send it into survival mode...but not enough to kill the parent plant...I checked it today and it seems to be fairing well...no types of discoloration or any indications of any weakening...hoping it continues in this manner so that it will have enough energy to give off those much anticipated babies...keep your fingers crossed for us and indeed stay tuned... :)

      HA HA HA...RIGHT!!! I probably have close to a hundred vandacious orchids...YIKES!!! I have such a weakness for them! My brain keeps saying enough is enough...but my hands don't seem to understand the concept!!! ..'it's a stupid concept anyways!! In the orchid world...everyone knows there's no such thing as having enough!!! LOL!!!

  • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
    @GrowingOrchidswithRoger 8 лет назад

    And I thought for a minute there you were going to crush the stem with the hammer!!! Good luck - the theory is good and we'll all have to wait to see how it reacts.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      HA HA HA!!! OH NO, I AM NOT TRYING TO KILL IT...I'm just giving it just enough to shock it a little...the healing capability of a vanda/orchid is incredible...especially the stem area...they almost heal themselves overnight...so I'm not worried about it recovering from that...just a little concerned that with the procedure and development of keikis there is a high probability that this may be set back in it's blooming process and could be a while before we see another flower again....sniff, sniff...teardrop... :(

      ....awwwww thanks so much and I do appreciate it...so glad to be back and in business...I thought by now someone would've filled my shoes...but I am so happy to receive such a warm welcome back...feels like home!!! :) ...and yes that crazy maxillaria that swears he's a vanda is doing so awesome...one of the most hardest orchids that I have!!! ...each propagated segment took well and is flourishing...there were no losses in this project and he bounced back rather quickly...this year he gave me about 40 blooms...what a difference from the measley 3 I received last season...so he indeed is a happy camper...I will do an update on max...and thanks for suggesting!!! HAPPY GROWING!! :)

      I hope it works too...a normal propagation for vandas would be to cut in segments ensuring you have at least 4 leaves and 2 healthy roots on the segment...but I didn't want to cut the plant completely...I want the original plant to stay intact...I just want it to have some babies and still continue to bloom and prosper...I am indeed keeping my fingers crossed. :)

      HA HA HA!!! I KNOW RIGHT!!! The stem of a vanda is so thick...it felt just like I was hammering a nail through wood...it was a lot tougher than I thought...and the poor vanda went through a lot more than I intended...but surprisingly I when I checked it today it has no visible signs of the traumatic experience other than the puncture wounds which also seem to be recovering well...so I am sighing a very big sigh of relief...WHHHHHEEEEEW! ...and though we are far from being in the clear...so far so good! Keep your fingers crossed for the courageous lad....and indeed stay tuned!!! :) HAPPY GROWING! :)

    I laughed almost the whole first three minutes. You're very entertaining! Thank you. Also, I never realized how VAST your collection is. How many do you have? Or do you even know how many you have? How many at last count? ;) Do you have a video of your entire grow space that shows how big it is? It's soooo pretty.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      LOL!!! Thank you for your kind comments and sure do appreciate you joining me on my orchid adventures...and I have actually lost count...I don't even try anymore...LOL!!! ...and now I have 2 grow spaces...one outdoors which consist of mainly vandas and other garden plants and one indoors in my bathroom that houses a variety of different orchids...here is an old video of my orchid garden outdoors that shows you the size of my grow space...and no my plans didn't quite work out as planned in the video...that was before I created an orchid grow space indoors that now consumes a lot of my time...so unfortunately my orchid garden outdoors needs major work...perhaps next year I will fully be able to get to it...LOL!!! Thank you for watching and HAPPY GROWING! :)

    Hello! I´ve been thinking about making small cuts (with an utility knife) and spray some indole-3-butyric acid on it.
    This acid can initiate the propagation of new roots. Have you ever tried it?

      +MY Orchid Adventures that sucks big time! I have a little request if you don't mind, I'm super super super interested in how you acquire your second hand orchids, or some of the huge steals! I'm 15 and orchids are so expensive in California so I only have a couple dendrobiums and cattleyas outdoors. I'm so jealous of not only your weather but how you can get a hold of so many "orchids in a bag". I've searched EVERYWHERE from Home Depots and lowes calling and making requests. I remember buying my first cattleya in one of those bags at Home Depot for $7 😳! Can't seem to find them anywhere here anymore. If you could make a long video orchid hunting I'm sure a lot of people would love it too. The best videos are the longest LOL
