    A large part of growing orchids is the accomplishment you feel when you bring a dying orchid back to life. Great job!

    Love Love Love your garden! I've always been a rose fanatic and I've played around with hybridizing them but recently I have been pulled into orchids when my sister asked me to see if I could revive her phalaenopsis. Well now I have a number of orchids that I also purchased from Low's on the discount rack, sooooo crossing fingers thanks for the video!!!

    hey maria,I love to get orchids when they are sick and not doing well because I like to see them heal and get better but I do go through a lot of trial and errors but what I do when they are really dehydrated is that I soak them in water without cutting any roots off but what I do cut off are the leaves since they take a lot of water...the plant won't looks so good but it will use ore water for pluming up and producing newer shoots

    Hello Maria!
    I'm glad to find some informative videos for orchids. I recently started taking care for them and learning from your videos, but as I'm new to all orchid parts, I'll really appreciate if you have a video where I can identify what kind of orchids I have lol! Don't have to have like specific names but I'll appreciate if you explain what a Phalanopsis, Cattleya, Vanda... Etc look like so I make sure I give them the proper care 😉(maybe like sutablulb on certain ones?)
    Also about this video how long do you recommend doing the emerge of water to help growths? All day, night, a few hours a day? I heard if I'm not mistaken to do it for and hour 3 times a day? Did I heard that right? Thanks you! And sorry for all the questions but probably I'll be asking you many more lol! Since like I said, I'm new to all this.

      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад +1

      +Anna Vidaurri Yes you are absolutely right! The first time I get a dehydrated orchid...I allow them to soak overnight...and then after wards I will soak them for 30 minutes - 1 hour at least 3 times a day...allowing it to dry completely in between...and yes I will see about doing a video about explaining types, growth habits and structures of an orchid...although I have several individual videos that talk about specific types of orchids...also another person that you should check out if you have not already is Miss Orchid Girl...she has tons of orchid videos explaining this as well!!! It is awesome to see that even though you are new...you are eager to learn and grow...which will make you a great orchid collector and grower!!! Many orchid wishes to you and HAPPY GROWING!! :)

I have seen some of your other videos now and have come across with Missorchidgirl also. Thanks for the info.

    Yes, Maria the pkg picture is spotted red with a cream background and with a pink/fushia lip. I hope that's what the blooms will look like once it bloom but won't know until maybe a few years since it's a baby.

    • @PictureMaria1

      rmcandlelight Yes...I seen that one too...and it is very beautiful...I will eventually pick one up...but here recently I have started purchasing more seedlings than usual...usually I try to stay away from the as much as possible...in the past I have not always been so attentive to my plants and I normally would get plants that could basically take care of themselves, so needless to say me and seedlings did not get along so well...but since I have revived my passion for orchids and have sincerely rededicated myself to the mission...I have been so amazed at the reward they give back ...and I have realized that YES I CAN DO IT!! LOL! Hoping you are well dear friend. :)

    I'm late... now that I can comment. I love this video, how are the precious little babies doing? I went to HD and got a Maxillaria Tenuifolia because of you. Lol! The bulbs are wrinkled but have good leaves and roots. I did soak but not as long as you did because I didn't see this video until now. I also purchased a $5 dollar Cattleya Novedosa Manchada well that's what the outside pkg says but the tag has a different name LV68 (C.Gene may x bl. Morning glory) of all the ones they had I picked up the one with w/2 names....blah, oh well..it too has nice leaves and roots so not too bad. Hope both survive :)

      Congratz on your Maxillaria...yaaaaay you!!! They bounce back rather quickly so I believe they will do just fine for you! The cattleya that you received is it a spotted one? I would love to see it...please visit me on Facebook and feel free to post some pics. m.facebook.com/MyOrchidAdventures?_rdr

    Being in Florida also I'm west of you on the coast, it gets rather cool/cold at times in the wintertime - do you leave your orchids outside all year long? And if so what do you do which them when the temp drops? Thanks for all the information I enjoy your videos

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  7 лет назад

      I did leave my orchids outdoors one year...and many suffered greatly, I even experienced orchid fatalities... :( When it starts getting below the 50's I bring them indoors for safety. There are some that I leave out year round...such as my epidendriums, maxillaria and my ground growing orchids...they can tolerate the cooler weather without a problem....but majority do go indoors. Some people keep their orchids outdoors in green houses...or they will wrap them up with blankets and such during frost temperatures...so you can do that as well...my lifestyle prevents me from doing that so indoors they go!

      Orchid Dreaming ...they were very unfortunate in the beginning because they did suffer a great deal...but sometimes it is within a tragedy where victory rises...and it is discovered that the sun will come again to brighten each darkened day...so with that being said...there will be much more brighter days for these little guys...welcome to my encyclia family!!! :)

    How do you make labels for your plants?? I've tried marker, pencil, on tags and they always seem to smear, or come off

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      ...try finding a non smear permanent marker. You may also need to find another brand of tags that is easier to write on. I try and always use pencil as that usually does not smear with water and also doesn't fade over time.

      Justmiss jamey. I paint over the writing with clear nail polish.

      @mihaimarius1622 7 лет назад

      Justmiss jamey you can try to write on your tag (label's ) with that type of markers that are used to write on the CD

    I thought soaking orchids in water overnight risks root rot? How did you avoid rotting them? Was it only because they were so dehydrated that this did not happen?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад +1

      You are absolutely correct....for normal, healthy orchids I would advise not to leave your orchids in stand still for long amounts of time because it can promote root rot especially for orchids that are already experiencing rot...in this case and with all of the orchids that I have used this method on, they were dying or parts of them had already died because of extreme dehydration so they needed as much water as soon as possible...I only give them the overnight soak only one night...then I soak them 30 minutes 3 times a day for 3 or more days, which gives them plenty of water and the needed dry time in between....once you see them bouncing back...and when they appear to be well enough they go back to regular growing conditions...again this is for only orchids that have been extremely dehydrated....I have saved many varieties of orchids with this method and none of them have experienced root rot and ALL of them are alive and flourishing.

    • @somethinguncreative
      @somethinguncreative 9 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much for explaining that thoroughly, Maria. I really appreciate it as it was a bit of a mystery to me. :)

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад +2

      somethinguncreative actually thanks for asking, it is a very good question and should've covered that in the video because that is a golden rule with orchids...not to leave them in stand still water for long amounts of time....so it can be confusing. Hoping all is well and wishing you a HAPPY ORCHID DAY! ...and thanks for watching! :)
