    Hi Maria, you’re indeed a very funny, crazy lady. I enjoyed so much of your reporting video & tell yah, I got a dendrobium lindleyi which I am going to repot also to semi-water culture. I hope it will do good. Thanks for the tip & like you I use plastic cups & put holes on them. You are really a certified orchid doctor or whatever they call you. Stay safe & hoping to see more videos.

    Thank you for all your wonderful videos. After watching several of them I had the courage to remove my orchids from the areca palms in my west side yard (they were attached to the trees and not growing) and pot them up. They are now in a north facing location under on my back patio. (They do not receive direct sunlight.) I was thrilled to recently see that they are starting to grow again. I'm sure that they are happier in potting medium that is watered more regularly. And, I get to enjoy them more in their current location.
    Keep those great videos coming.

    Hi Mara, nice to see you having fun and playing doctor lol. I have a few orchids that are trying to go for a walk, one is about 3 inches out of the pot, our kitten knocked it over yesterday and I though oh no I'm going to have to do something about that soon, but I just put it back in its pot, but now I think i will repot it today and split it, please pray for the plant that i don't kill it,it will need all the help it can get lol I have 7 of oncidium or bulb type orchids and I haven't seen any of them flower yet, not a spike anywhere to be seen, So i would be gutted to loose one, :-)

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад

      Rosemary457 ...yea although we often times overlook repotting it is important to do. I've damaged some orchids because they were either imbalanced in the pot and would topple over because of the uneven weight...or some would snap off when I carelessly moved them about...so it does help with accidentally harming them...I am praying for strength and endurance for your division and repot...YOU CAN DO IT!!! ... and don't give up on your Oncidiums...some are just specific to their bloom schedules...I just started collecting some myself...I only have 3 thus far...but can feel myself falling in love with them too...especially the fragrant ones! :) I am keeping my fingers crossed that your Onc. start spiking really soon!!! ...sending blooming wishes your way dear friend!

    • @Rosemary457
      @Rosemary457 9 лет назад

      PictureMaria1 I am beging to think I'm not very lucky with my orchids, I have had 2 phals that put up a spike, And in each case they dropped the rather large buds without even coming close to opening, The only plant that has flowered for me is one of my dendrobiums the nobile berry oda the other is a nobile and so far nothing from her and they are both cared for in the same way, I have a zygo, a cattleya, and nothing from either of them, but they are all growing new leaves, riveting eh, I have to say I'm very disillusioned with my collection of 20 orchids out of which 19 haven't flowered for me. :-(

    • @Rosemary457
      @Rosemary457 9 лет назад

      Rosemary457 Oh I meant to say, I don't know if i should the repot because it's a lone bulb, 1 of 3, what do you think do it or not, :-

      +PictureMaria1 hi Maria, don't sweat it, we are all busy! Yes, all my orchids are in either a clear plastic container with holes, or in semi-water culture or a glass vase. And yes, they are growing extremely well in bark, 2 of them have flower spikes right now.

      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      Kati R. YAAAAAAAY!!! So happy to hear it! I've used the semi water culture for some orchids but usually as a rescue method...and I do find it useful and a great way of growing, displaying and providing good watering for them especially indoors...I keep my orchids outdoors so it isn't feasible with the grow system I have. Wishing you a very MERRY Christmas and a beautiful Holiday Season! ENJOY! :)

      +M Perl Thanks so much...I use a regular fertilizer by Better Gro that can be purchased at your local garden center (Lowe's or Home Depot) and I put a teaspoon to a gallon of water and try and feed during every or every other watering...I believe with the combination of fertilizer and warm bright temperatures of the outdoor...they thrive exceedingly well....oh and of course I always spend quality time with them admiring and talking to them. :)

    Thanks though, really really helpful. I’m determined to plant my new tolumnias, oncidiums and brassavolaes in a potting mix that allows me water all the orchids at the same time. (Until I got the new ones last week, I only had phals and dendrobiums.
    So.... is this possible? Oh! And one more thing... that tool is brilliant. I tried the hubbies drill, yeah, that doesn’t work, but I still used the plastic pots, they were just all cracked with busted holes instead of nice neat holes!

      Hey there and not a problem, I am so glad that you asked. Any time my orchids show signs are in not so good condition. I will separate them from the rest of my orchids but I never stop taking care of them. I will continue to water as normal and many times they eventually surprise me by coming back to life again! So your orchid still has a chance. Good luck and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it recovers!

    Hi: Just started having an interest in Orchids and would like to know where to start? Maybe a book, classes or anything with orchid terminology. What's the easiest plant to grow and one with a plentiful root producing for others. Thanks

  • @drpk6514
    @drpk6514 8 лет назад +2

    Nothing wrong with the plant. It is normal for Catt type orchids to produce areal roots. This plant is a epiphyte and new growth grows is grown to its ideal condition. Furthermore it doesnt need a different watering pattern because although the roots started from above but the rest is in the media and gets its water from the same media. Furthermore that part is only an off shoot of the main plant which receives water from the rest of the plant if it want. Best is to leave it the way it preferres to grow.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад +6

      ...it is all in the preference of the grower on how they want or need to grow their orchids..climate and conditions also have a lot to do in how a person handles and takes care of their orchids...in my area it can get intensely hot and because my orchids are outdoors some were suffering...so I had to do what was best for my orchids in my environment...I can tell you though that they have all been doing so much better since I did this...so I am happy that I chose to do it. ...and yes they are epiphytic in nature...but I'm not growing them in trees...nor are they growing in jungles and rain forest with constant moisture and humidity... so I have to accommodate them in the best way that I can.

      Arreal roots only happend for one reason and that's if the plant feels it has no oxygyn inside the mediums, then they start to produce arreal roots. now i'm not saying arreal roots are a bad thing, they can thrive very good on arreal roots, but it looks cleaner whitout arreal roots, meaning you've to replant/propagate them

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 лет назад

      The time to repot orchids would be during the spring or summer season because that is when it is the prime conditions for the orchid to grow. The best time would be in the spring time or early summer before it gets extremely hot.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  7 лет назад +1

      ...it would be good to try it...if YOU want to try it. It is a very personal choice and I don't want to steer you in one way or another. If you do decide to do it...try it first only one or two and ones that you are willing to experiment with. Never choose to experiment on any of your highly valued orchids.

    So funny...slug heaven...but so gross to watch..yuck..hate them...lol..anyway great video and i noticed you skipped on the division of the schomburgkia which i think was a good idea since in my opinion they need as many pseudobulbs storing nutrients, ie water and fertilizer, so that each successive bulb is bigger and bigger to produce those long long spikes. But overall i think you made a smart decision to repot and divide. Thanks again Maria for sharing

      TD Moore HA HA HA!!! I can't believe you caught that!!! You have such a keen eye!!! The funny thing was...is I was supposed to include that footage and was so upset that I couldn't find it. My disc kept getting full and I had to change them out...and for the life of me I could not find the footage!!! I didn't think anyone would notice...and then you came along...thanks for spoiling it for everyone!!!!! LOL!!! TOO FUNNY!!! I laughed when I read your comment...oh and I actually wanted to include that footage for the simple fact that it was another type of pseudo bulb...and a lot harder to fight with...just giving different dimensions of how to handle each type of bulb... :) Thanks for watching dear friend. :)

    How do you deal with air roots?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  5 лет назад

      Well because I grow my orchids outdoors I don't have an issue with them. I usually hose or mist them down daily so the orchid along with all of their air roots also get watered.

    You don't kill them just removed them ,they are useful in another area of the garden.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      +Nelson Flores I am confused...WHO KILLED THEM? LOL!!! They are ALL ALIVE AND DOING VERY WELL with many, many new growths! Do you think I would actually do anything intentional to kill them??? LOL! No worries...as orchid growers there are many different ways we grow our orchids including propagating them...and that is all that I did. Next year with good luck I am hoping all my propagations will bloom for me fingers crossed.

    Do you keep your orchids outdoors? Is that why slugs are in your plants! I would be horrified!

      Yes, I do for the most part. I would absolutely be freaking out if I had slugs inside of my house! LOL!

    Don't you put name tag on each of them?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад +1

      +kitty687 That's a great habit to have...but I must admit...I don't always do it and later have lived to regret it. In this video I did not but I split each plant into two...so I had a tag on one part of it...so I know what they are...but you bring about a great point...I have to make sure that I do it...because there is never a guarantee that you won't mix them up by accident. Thanks for the reminder. :)

    • @kitty687
      @kitty687 9 лет назад

      Even I put name tag on it accident can happen.i need to wait till it bloom and find out it's ID .sometime no luck as you know.they have many that similar looking.not only name that I put on the tag,I did put potting date,blooming date so I can keep track on them.my brain is too small to remember all

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад

      All of these propagation were from ones that did have tags...and I kept them together or they were potted in the same pot and although I did not show it in the video I did tag the names on them by writing it on the pot which was my intention from the beginning...also I pot my orchids on a regular bases either 1 or 2 years....and I go based upon my memory, by the growth of the orchid and seeing it needs to be repotted or by the condition of the media...every gardner has their own style of growing their orchids and what may work for one may not work for another...the suggestions you have given are all great tips and lucky for me I guess, have a better memory...LOL!

    Good video, but nothing "unhealthy" about the growth of that orchid. Good points made, but improper choice of words.
