    Thank you sooooo much for this tutorial ! It was like watching over your shoulder 😄 !
    I notieced you didn't cut some yellow roots ....are they still useful for the phal ? My boyfriend has just offered me a new one in full bloom and I was afraid of converting it right now.....won't the flowers fall ?
    Your latest purchase is a pure wonder 😍😍😍😍😍😍

      Hi Catherine and thanks so much for your sweet comment! I'm so glad to hear this video helped you! :) The yellow roots are still fine and viable for the plant. They just haven't had any light, so they stay yellow like this until they do receive some light. I've converted many orchids to water culture, and converting them doesn't affect the bloom cycle. Have a great day and happy growing! :)

      Dear OW! I just love your videos. They have been most helpful. Our orchids here up North!! ON Canada are double de price and limited in selection. I just purchased one today with lots of roots and leaves and blooms and buds! It came in bark but prepared it all for H2O culture. I did not have calmag and salt for the watering cleaning: hope this will still work. It’s a bit challenging to make the decision if roots are clean enough for H2O but I will give it a try to see. After a week, or two, I will see if rehoming it in bark is best I will do so. I am hoping it won’t die!
      One I am trying to save from dying: it has no more roots! It’s in bark, in a warm room with lots of humidity and light. It’s hard to see root growth in bark; any suggestions?
      I am starting! Just this week! But really finding interest in them!
      Thank you for your book reference and end comment. Also find your crystal crosses so beautiful ;)
      Yours sincerely, Julie

    Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I’m currently living in Korea, where I don’t speak the language and had to take my 4 phalaenopsis orchids I’ve had for the last 3 years (a completely newbie plant and orchid grower) to a local orchid grower for help. With the help of a Korean friend, he’s converted it from moss to water culture and I was really worried. But having watched your video, I’m feeling a lot better, and will watch your other videos to help my new water culture orchids. Your descriptions and focusing in and out on the root system is excellent; and your voice is clear and cues really helpful. Thank you, bless you and continue the great work!

    That "stringy part" is the actual root. The rest--the fleshy thick part that turns green when watered--is phylum and it absorbs the water and conducts it to the root over time.

    That's a very informative video.All your videos are, as a matter of fact. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! I am currently keeping my rootless Phal in FWC. And noticing some good change.
    Whats your opinion about Orchid seedlings that come in flasks? I have a flask with may be 10 Phal seedlings, some are really grown in the flask. But before i deflask them, i need to know all possibilities. I am understanding from different write-ups that, seedlings need a lot of water, need to remain moist. And I was wondering if I could put them in Water Culture!! Pls let me know your opinion. And also, if you could guide me a bit about how to care for them once they are out of their cozy flask! Many thanks.

      Hi Mary and thanks so much for your sweet comment! :) It's always so nice hearing from you! I'm really happy to hear that your Phal is doing well in FWC...I enjoy hearing success stories! :) I have never grown seedlings that come in flasks. All of the orchids I grow are mature plants when I buy them. But I think I would choose New Zealand sphagnum moss to grow them in. It's a great media for baby plants and miniatures. The moss also retains nutrients well, and that is an important aspect of growing baby orchids. I wish you much success with your deflasking, and please keep me posted! This is an interesting topic! Have a great day and happy growing!

    • @MG-sd2bd
      @MG-sd2bd 6 лет назад

      Orchid Whisperer thank you so much for your opinion and I will do that! Sphagnum moss it is!!! I'm planning to deflask them when I see the gel is reduced and all the seedlings have good size. Hello, I have a tiny phal that I suspect was a keiki. I thought she was going well in her bark mix but I took her out when I noticed she just wasn't growing like the rest. She has 1 root that is about 1,/2 inch long and another that about 1/8. I placed her in moss and she is doing well. I would like to try her in water culter. I figured, from watching other videos that she needs a strip of cloth placed over the root and the end of the cloth down in the water to hydrate the orchid? I would love to try this . What are your thoughts?

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer 5 лет назад

      Hi Kristina! If it were my orchid, I would keep it in moss since it's doing well in moss. I've never tried water culture with a strip of cloth the way you've described, so I don't know if I would do that. If the orchid is happy, just keep doing what it's used to. Happy growing! :)

    I just repotted several of my orchids in the orchiata and no root shock! My rescue orchid that lost almost all of its roots was trying to grow another Spike so I cut it off because it's still only has about 5 roots and it's newest leaf is deep purple on the back I've given it a soak in Epsom salt but haven't been able to find the Cal-mag locally so I'm going to have to order it would it be safe to do my better grow fertilizer with a little bit of Epsom salt to give it more magnesium or do you think it would be too much salt and burn the roots?

      Hi Eirene! It sounds like you repotted it just fine. It's almost impossible to repot one the exact same way it was before. Happy growing!

      Actually, if you purchase an orchid with roots sticking out of the top and you decide to repot it, try to make sure those roots are still sticking out of the top of the pot once the orchid has been repotted. They are called air roots, and are necessary for the plants survival.
      Epiphyte orchids use their roots to absorb nutrients from the air. They also absorb moisture and get the carbon dioxide they need to thrive directly from the air. This unique root system uses the humidity around it to get the water and nutrients it needs to survive.

    Spraying the roof with water and a tbsp of peroxide is real good to kill any bacteria the plant might have

    Awesome video. I should’ve watched this before I tried converting my new phal to water culture. I lost like 75% of the roots. Leaves still look nice and healthy and hoping it grows new water adapted roots.
    On my other plants I both converted to water culture earlier, slowly grew back the roots I lost in the bark and one of the orchids roots systems are real thick. Is that a normal occurrence? Anyways thanks for the video.

    My Phalaenopsis has no roots but a few air roots and has some white thin strand roots starting at the bottom since it has been in water. Is it feasible that this orchid can be saved?

    I'm confused. Shouldn't you have waited until the blooms faded?

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer 8 месяцев назад

      It's better to wait till the Phals blooms are fully open, but after that, it's fine to repot. They just have to be kept watered.

    Hi, I have a question ! I need to know what kind of peanuts you use and where do you get them? All I see are biodegradable they desolve in water. Ups has pink biodegradable ones also. If they desolve wouldn't that hurt orchids? Thank you for you help with this😍

    Those stringy things are the actual roots. The green fleshy tube covering it is a protective cover which actually can photosynthesize.

      Depends on the orchid, you’ll soon find out by watching it closely
