I have a Hoya growing on a moss pole I made from your tutorial. It is growing at least five times faster than its sibling which is right beside it but on a trellis. The one on the moss pole puts out little aerial roots at an incredible rate, and it seems that it really assists the Hoya to put out new vines/runners (not sure of the correct term) from older nodes, which allows me to create a denser effect. It was an experiment after I noticed little aerial root buds on the original Hoya. I will now always use moss poles for my Hoyas.
Do you think a moss pole could help with blooming? I kinda don't want my hoya pubicalyx to grow even more and faster as it is already growing like crazy 😂 but after 3 years I still got no blooms 😢
@@Hibiskusblume09look into Gibberellic acid. There’s research papers on using it to induce flowering on tropical plants. I read that it had great effect on philodendron and arguable effect on anthurium, not sure about Hoya, but I’d say it’s worth just trying to spray some on it.

Hoya Pubicalyx is one of the most prolific growers of all Hoyas in my experience, and while they do love to climb on anything they possibly can, they don't need a moss pole to bloom. The conditions have to be right for blooming as far as temperature, light, and humidity. It also depends on how old the plant was when you bought it. Some Hoyas take many years to "mature" and bloom. I have a Carnosa that is HUGE but has never bloomed and I've had it for about 2 years, and my Pubicalyx is 18 years old, and it blooms almost all year long. I have a cutting of my Pubicalyx indoors that has never bloomed but looks green and lush, and the one outdoors where it's hot and humid never stops blooming. (I live in Florida) @Hibiskusblume09

I struggle quite a bit in choosing where plants should stand, which direction their leaves should face, and how to position grow lights near plants, all while trying to keep them facing the inside of my room so I can gaze upon them every day. Very timely! About a year ago, my cats knocked over my newly purchased monstera Peru, and tore it to pieces. I’ve finally gotten it growing again, after chopping it into node cuttings. I was planning on putting it on a moss pole when I repot it. Thanks for your advise about monstera Peru and about scindapsus pictus.
I took all the moss poles from my “arrow plants” that I got at the beginning of summer. They truly do not care and would rather go crazy all over the pot than up LOL

Thank you SO SO MUCH! This was extremely informative. I’m propagating some M. Peru cuttings right now in order to have several on one pole. It’s one of my best growers with such little attention. I just love the leaf texture. It may never be a jaw dropper but I’m hoping it will be an eye catcher. Even in a hanging pot my leaves are bigger than my hand. I’m in the US SoCal and it gets lots of direct sun in a south window. I wasn’t into Hoyas either, until I was. I don’t expect them to be lush tropicals, but there’s so much potential to discover. I learn so much from your videos, it’s like a master class! Thanks to you and chin scratches for Brad!
So much to consider when choosing to use moss poles or not. This will be a wonderful resource for future reference. Thanks Jan😻 Plants I've chosen other means of support would be, Syngoniums, several hanging/ lush pot epipremnum , although many have a double on moss pole( gotta have that giant Manjula who may get an extension finally!) Most of my self heading Philodendron ( Black cardinal, Warscewiczii) as well as the royal court ( pink princess, white knight etc.) Basically it's now a choice of who gets the prime pole treatment, everyone else needs to slow their growth and serve as fillers.😻
Actually, the leaves do get bigger enough to make a moss pole worthwile even if they plateau after a while. It may make sense for him to say that he's got a ton of climbing plants so he isn't particularly keen on adding that one to the list, but if you are not in his position, you might as well try.

After seeing your amazing plants I really really wanted a moss pole. Just one. I tried Hoya Australis last spring but it was not impressed 🥱 I prefer non-toxic plants so will keep hunting for just the right plant. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, it helps so much 👍
My first ever house plant (a monstera deliciosa) I grew on a stake and it was fine for almost 3 years. 😇 However, she grew so out of control that I recently chopped ✂ her up to propagate and as soon as my cutting is showing signs of leaf growth, I plan on putting her on a moss pole.🙏 My thai and variegated monstera have been on a moss pole from day 1 and I prefer the growth and look at them a lot more😀

I have finally learned how to keep my xanadu happy. Do not bury the crown....or what is the "tree part" I had no idea what the plant was when I bought it off the clearance table at the grocer and it was experiencing some rot....its quite small with lots of crowns and now that you've confirmed what I suspected I am going to have to divide it at some point or it will be a huge branchy bush in my tiny house. Next springs goals...
You might want to be careful with actually cutting or diving Xanadu. Especially if you’ve "cracked the code", as far as what the plant likes, not burying the trunk or the crown, etc. You don’t want to ruin any success you’ve had so far. 😉 I say that because it’s a tree philodendron, aka a _Thaumatophyllum_ (tree aroids, like the giant 'Selloum', 'Hope', 'Lickety-Split', etc) and they don’t usually survive as cuttings. They are very hardy plants, yes, but only once established. Most people only buy them or dig the entire plant up and replant it. They seem to really depend on their roots in a way that other aroids don’t. I’ve only had success with them when I’ve purchased brand new potted plant, or dug up an entire plant and relocated it, roots and all. I’ve tried cuttings but they never live. I suppose if there was sufficient root material attached, MAYBE you could do a root division, but I’ve never had success even with that. They’re not like the standard _Philodendron_ genus, or even the _Monstera_ or _Epipremnum_ when it comes to propagation. Dividing a clump could mean the end of your success, just saying! 😬 🙏🏼

I think it is time to go plant shopping because I do not have one plant that requires a moss pole! The only plant I have that truly requires support is my Philodendron Burl Marx- which is seeing a lot of branching off the taller it gets-absolutely insane amount of new growth the last month. The roots seem to be too short to latch on to anything, though. It was a cutting (from a neighbour) and I have to ask- do you think a moss pole would help or should I stick with the stake I have attached it to? Ich hab meinen Verrucosum ohne Rankstab. Ich find deine mit den riesigen Blätter einfach wunderschön. Ich hab aber den Platz nicht dazu. Sie wächst hängend von einem Regal mit kleinen Blättern und sieht so auch so toll aus. Quasi der „Bonsai im Wildwuchs“ im vergleich zu deinen 😅.
I have tried a really easy hoya carnosa on a moss pole and it was a waste of time...what I have done recently though that has turned out lovely is to propagate a whole heap of hoya cuttings into a moss pole but with the pole hanging horizontally (no pot involved) and the cuttings hanging down. It looks great and I cannot wait for it to fill out and flower with maturity as I have 7 hoya varieties mixed through it. I used coco chips rather that moss as hoya love it and they don't mind being on the dry side once established.

There’s an in-depth video about this coming out soon actually, but in short: propagate it and start it on a pole from the bottom :) don’t fix it on there in hindsight :)
I just made a moss pole for my small Monstera Thai. Hope she grows big and tall! She just gave me the first fenestrated leaf. I think even if not necessary, it'll look more "tidy" as she gets bigger!
Hahah I love your take on spiders. Where I live in Florida we constantly have huntsman spiders as well as wolf spiders! They’re really interesting actually and I’ve grown to find them cute lol still don’t want to touch them though! If any come inside I place a cup over them and slide paper under and move them back outside 😁
Woooow those wild feral monsters delisiosa are so beautiful. Are they considered invasive problems? I grow mine on a covered Western patio with maybe an hour of direct setting sun in Houston TX. Even the Thai variant love that.
Out of my approx. 100 Hoyas, I tried the H. Kerrii on a moss pole. It is growing very well but not enlarging the leaves. Yea, my M. Peru is on a moss pole, no change, so now I left it trailing on top of the pole…kinda cute that way. 😊 Too bad I didn’t see you in the Miami Expo, I flew back 1 week earlier 😊
I have quite a few Hoya species. I do have some trellised because they are fast growers, most of them just trail or I train them up their hanging planters The only one I have on a mossy surface is my Hoya Imbricata. It doesn’t necessarily need to be on a pole but if you want the shingling and the leaves to be flat- instead of folded you need to have it mounted. Mine is going crazy and I have plans to add a cutting of it to a dart frog Vivarium which will give it the high humidity and flat growing surface it prefers.

What about Philodendron Birkin? Any idea if it would like a moss pole? It has aerial roots, so I’ve been considering adding one. I moved house and all of my plants suffered from the change of environment. Trying to figure out how to manage bringing this guy back!

Sooooo….I have not given any of my Monstera moss poles. I want to continue to rotate so they will be bushy and tall but I have heard that the stems will twist and not in a good way. Thoughts? One of my baby Thai’s just gave me her very 1st fenestrated leaf and I just want all of them to grow happy, healthy and as big as they want to be. I also have been thinking of potting all 4 of my Thai in the same pot. Would love to hear your thoughts on that one LOL!! And, thank you SOOOOOO much for keeping things real!! So many ppl totally freak out if you do the slightest thing outside of the current norm and I just do not get that.
great vid. I am a life long planty but big plants that need moss poles are newish to me, I have a baby Monstera Alba and a baby Tai Constelation. I had a recular Monstera before - it reached 8 ft then I donated it to a local botanical gardens. how the heck do I keep a moss pole hydrated? My big guy just clambered up my wall in England. I an a bit scared by the baby alba and Tai
Also you were curious as to what i was using for my Vanilla Planifolia, i was using dried coconut shells instead of moss or coconut chips as it felt like it wouldnt warp as much as if i was to use coconut chips as the Vanilla orchid is really heavy !
The wildlife in Australia is terrifying, I prefer the snow without those spiders🇨🇦 Your plants are beautiful! Maybe I should try putting a moss pole on one of my calathea, maybe that's the secret 🤣 At my favorite plant shop, there is a hoya in a wooden beam that has been there for years and is growing very well. I'm debating putting my Monstera adansonii on a moss pole (it would be my first), but I seriously doubt whether I can keep up with the care for the moss pole. Decisions, decions... Nice vid, Jan; very entertaining!
Get a plastic pole with coco fibers wrapped around it then. You can still spray it and help roots grab it and grow into it a bit, but it's not necessary to do it or keep a schedule about it. I use these instead of moss poles and the leafs of my epipremnum aren't that much smaller.
Honestly your reasoning for the Monstera Thai not being on a moss pole makes perfect sense but I saw this video only after mine has been put on a moss pole 😅 And it shot out a new leaf immediately (it had a starting aerial root I put in the pole) Now it's got a bunch of roots in the pole a month later so I'm way too nervous to remove the pole 😣
It’s a support, but far off from being an extension of the pot! I have a full video in my Moss Pole Playlist where I compare all supports (moss poles, wooden supports, trellis etc) i reckon that will help:)

This weekend I took moss poles away from a syngonium - The runners had rooted, but it does noting to mature the plant. I cut the roots and attached the runners to a trellis instead, and a rhaphidaphora tetrasperma. It just climbs too fast, and won't size up the leaves. I'd need 8 feet of moss pole if I had kept it going. Also now on a trellis.

i put a monstera variegata on a moss pole but i'm having a hard time making sure it's always wet, do you recommend i just take out the aerial roots from the moss pole and replace it with a coco pole just for making the plant stable? It's already grown and rooted a bit in the moss pole but i don't think it's anything crazy because i don't water it a lot. also regarding monstera thai const. - i would like to grow it as a crawler like you are, it's still quite small (3 leaves) so when i repot it should i pot it a bit horizontally like you did to make sure all the lower nodes root into the substrate or do i continue repotting it vertically like it is currently?
When you said you will replace the philodendron moss poll with some bark - what did you mean? Did you mean the iron bark supports that you showed earlier in the video? Where do you buy them?
Yes :) i got them off ebay 3 years ago :) not sure if it’s still being sold & suppose depends on the country u live in as well but if u search for ‘iron bark’ u should have success finding it :)
I heard if you don't give the satin Plant( argyraeus) need bright light because it will lose silver on leaf now I hear it can be in low light I don't have great window light at all so I rely on grow lights so this plants can be next to a grow light or a bit away and do ok ? I've been struggling with this plant severely so I have organic soil inside and per light in the pot. Do they like and I'm begging somebody do they like to have their soil moist I don't know what to do with this plant. I keep having the leaves fold on the leaves fold

Omg this is a long overdue time that FINALLY someone is explaining and sharing something that made so much sense. I put my variegated philodendron hederaceum on a moss pole and I'm now so regretful of it. I now rather have it full bush instead

My first ever house plant (a monstera deliciosa) I grew on a stake and it was fine for almost 3 years. 😇 However, she grew so out of control that I recently chopped ✂ her up to propagate and as soon as my cutting is showing signs of leaf growth, I plan on putting her on a moss pole.🙏 My thai and variegated monstera have been on a moss pole from day 1 and I prefer the growth and look at them a lot more😀

I have finally learned how to keep my xanadu happy. Do not bury the crown....or what is the "tree part" I had no idea what the plant was when I bought it off the clearance table at the grocer and it was experiencing some rot....its quite small with lots of crowns and now that you've confirmed what I suspected I am going to have to divide it at some point or it will be a huge branchy bush in my tiny house. Next springs goals...
They are super hardy :) i’m sure it will thrive :)
You might want to be careful with actually cutting or diving Xanadu. Especially if you’ve "cracked the code", as far as what the plant likes, not burying the trunk or the crown, etc. You don’t want to ruin any success you’ve had so far. 😉 I say that because it’s a tree philodendron, aka a _Thaumatophyllum_ (tree aroids, like the giant 'Selloum', 'Hope', 'Lickety-Split', etc) and they don’t usually survive as cuttings. They are very hardy plants, yes, but only once established. Most people only buy them or dig the entire plant up and replant it. They seem to really depend on their roots in a way that other aroids don’t. I’ve only had success with them when I’ve purchased brand new potted plant, or dug up an entire plant and relocated it, roots and all. I’ve tried cuttings but they never live. I suppose if there was sufficient root material attached, MAYBE you could do a root division, but I’ve never had success even with that. They’re not like the standard _Philodendron_ genus, or even the _Monstera_ or _Epipremnum_ when it comes to propagation. Dividing a clump could mean the end of your success, just saying! 😬 🙏🏼

I think it is time to go plant shopping because I do not have one plant that requires a moss pole! The only plant I have that truly requires support is my Philodendron Burl Marx- which is seeing a lot of branching off the taller it gets-absolutely insane amount of new growth the last month. The roots seem to be too short to latch on to anything, though. It was a cutting (from a neighbour) and I have to ask- do you think a moss pole would help or should I stick with the stake I have attached it to? Love your passion, it does come through and is catchy! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. :)
Ich hab meinen Verrucosum ohne Rankstab. Ich find deine mit den riesigen Blätter einfach wunderschön. Ich hab aber den Platz nicht dazu. Sie wächst hängend von einem Regal mit kleinen Blättern und sieht so auch so toll aus. Quasi der „Bonsai im Wildwuchs“ im vergleich zu deinen 😅.
I have tried a really easy hoya carnosa on a moss pole and it was a waste of time...what I have done recently though that has turned out lovely is to propagate a whole heap of hoya cuttings into a moss pole but with the pole hanging horizontally (no pot involved) and the cuttings hanging down. It looks great and I cannot wait for it to fill out and flower with maturity as I have 7 hoya varieties mixed through it. I used coco chips rather that moss as hoya love it and they don't mind being on the dry side once established.

There’s an in-depth video about this coming out soon actually, but in short: propagate it and start it on a pole from the bottom :) don’t fix it on there in hindsight :)
I just made a moss pole for my small Monstera Thai. Hope she grows big and tall! She just gave me the first fenestrated leaf. I think even if not necessary, it'll look more "tidy" as she gets bigger!

Hahah I love your take on spiders. Where I live in Florida we constantly have huntsman spiders as well as wolf spiders! They’re really interesting actually and I’ve grown to find them cute lol still don’t want to touch them though! If any come inside I place a cup over them and slide paper under and move them back outside 😁

Woooow those wild feral monsters delisiosa are so beautiful. Are they considered invasive problems? I grow mine on a covered Western patio with maybe an hour of direct setting sun in Houston TX. Even the Thai variant love that.
The council definitely chops them back so they don’t take over :)
Out of my approx. 100 Hoyas, I tried the H. Kerrii on a moss pole. It is growing very well but not enlarging the leaves. Yea, my M. Peru is on a moss pole, no change, so now I left it trailing on top of the pole…kinda cute that way. 😊 Too bad I didn’t see you in the Miami Expo, I flew back 1 week earlier 😊

I have quite a few Hoya species. I do have some trellised because they are fast growers, most of them just trail or I train them up their hanging planters The only one I have on a mossy surface is my Hoya Imbricata. It doesn’t necessarily need to be on a pole but if you want the shingling and the leaves to be flat- instead of folded you need to have it mounted. Mine is going crazy and I have plans to add a cutting of it to a dart frog Vivarium which will give it the high humidity and flat growing surface it prefers.

Sooooo….I have not given any of my Monstera moss poles. I want to continue to rotate so they will be bushy and tall but I have heard that the stems will twist and not in a good way. Thoughts? One of my baby Thai’s just gave me her very 1st fenestrated leaf and I just want all of them to grow happy, healthy and as big as they want to be. I also have been thinking of potting all 4 of my Thai in the same pot. Would love to hear your thoughts on that one LOL!! And, thank you SOOOOOO much for keeping things real!! So many ppl totally freak out if you do the slightest thing outside of the current norm and I just do not get that.

great vid. I am a life long planty but big plants that need moss poles are newish to me, I have a baby Monstera Alba and a baby Tai Constelation. I had a recular Monstera before - it reached 8 ft then I donated it to a local botanical gardens. how the heck do I keep a moss pole hydrated? My big guy just clambered up my wall in England. I an a bit scared by the baby alba and Tai

Also you were curious as to what i was using for my Vanilla Planifolia, i was using dried coconut shells instead of moss or coconut chips as it felt like it wouldnt warp as much as if i was to use coconut chips as the Vanilla orchid is really heavy !

Get a plastic pole with coco fibers wrapped around it then. You can still spray it and help roots grab it and grow into it a bit, but it's not necessary to do it or keep a schedule about it. I use these instead of moss poles and the leafs of my epipremnum aren't that much smaller.
When you do chop..do you leave the original base in the pot, or do you cut that up for propagation?

Honestly your reasoning for the Monstera Thai not being on a moss pole makes perfect sense but I saw this video only after mine has been put on a moss pole 😅 And it shot out a new leaf immediately (it had a starting aerial root I put in the pole) Now it's got a bunch of roots in the pole a month later so I'm way too nervous to remove the pole 😣
A moss pole gives u a security from root rot so not a bad thing at all if you’re willing to keep it moist :)

This weekend I took moss poles away from a syngonium - The runners had rooted, but it does noting to mature the plant. I cut the roots and attached the runners to a trellis instead, and a rhaphidaphora tetrasperma. It just climbs too fast, and won't size up the leaves. I'd need 8 feet of moss pole if I had kept it going. Also now on a trellis.
To mature it u will have to increase light, irrespective of the support:)

i put a monstera variegata on a moss pole but i'm having a hard time making sure it's always wet, do you recommend i just take out the aerial roots from the moss pole and replace it with a coco pole just for making the plant stable? It's already grown and rooted a bit in the moss pole but i don't think it's anything crazy because i don't water it a lot.
also regarding monstera thai const. - i would like to grow it as a crawler like you are, it's still quite small (3 leaves) so when i repot it should i pot it a bit horizontally like you did to make sure all the lower nodes root into the substrate or do i continue repotting it vertically like it is currently?
I wonder if a hoya on a moss pole would allow it to flower more. Ooop inspired! I have wild vines on one of my hoyas. Experiment time!
When you said you will replace the philodendron moss poll with some bark - what did you mean? Did you mean the iron bark supports that you showed earlier in the video? Where do you buy them?
Yes :) i got them off ebay 3 years ago :) not sure if it’s still being sold & suppose depends on the country u live in as well but if u search for ‘iron bark’ u should have success finding it :)

Would you place Hoya on a moss pole? They’re climbers and some of them tend to be difficult growing beautiful.
I heard if you don't give the satin Plant( argyraeus) need bright light because it will lose silver on leaf now I hear it can be in low light
I don't have great window light at all so I rely on grow lights so this plants can be next to a grow light or a bit away and do ok ?
I've been struggling with this plant severely so I have organic soil inside and per light in the pot. Do they like and I'm begging somebody do they like to have their soil moist I don't know what to do with this plant. I keep having the leaves fold on the leaves fold
