I am from China. During this war, a Tang Dynasty soldier named Du Huan was taken prisoner and met many Chinese papermakers, carpenters, and painters in Arabia, and here is my English translation based on ancient Chinese documents. [Record of Chinese Tang Dynasty captives living in Arabia] The name of the king of Arabia was Mamun, and he was born here. Arab women were tall and plump, with beautiful clean clothes and moon-like beauty. The women went out and covered their faces. Silks and pearls from various countries are in abundance in the markets. Camels and donkeys walk through the streets. Vases of Chinese porcelain are offered by merchants to noblemen at festivals. Rice and wheat flour are available here, just like in China. Here grapes are the same size as eggs. There was a love of spices. Weavers, goldsmiths, painters, Fan Shu and Liu Hua from Shaanxi, China, and Lv Li from the east bank of the Yellow River. They also drove with camels. Their horses, said to be born from the mating of a dragon and a horse in the West Sea, have small bellies and long legs, and can run a thousand miles a day. There is also the ostrich, which is 3 meters high and has feet bigger than a camel's hoof, so that a man can ride an ostrich. There are also palm trees, the fruit is like Chinese dates, can be pressed to produce oil, eating dates can prevent disease. The climate in Arabia is warm, no snow and no ice. People often suffered from malaria, and within a year, half of those who got sick would die. Arabia conquered more than 50 countries and sent troops to defend them. The westernmost part of the Arabian territory reached the Black Sea.

Hi I am from Gilgit, Pakistan, I wasn't awared of the battle between Gilgit and China fourteen hundred years ago, thanks for making this precious video. 🌹
I am from Multan, Punjab. I heard only few accounts about it last year when i visited Hunza. I like history so i dig on it and found about Chinese invasion on Gilgit and Karimabad. There are also some racial mixing between biltistan, Mangol, Chinese, Turks and tibetian.
One of the major reason of why the Chinese Tang Dynasty and Arabic empire were hostile towards each other was because the Arabs invaded the Persians which was allied with China, Tang and Persia had great relations. After the Persian empire was destroyed, the Persian prince fled to China for asylum.
God Guides To His Light Whom He Wills ! Yes. They still had the remnants of the Sassanid court living in Chang'an. By the very nature of distance and having their own problems, the Tang couldn't have mounted an attack on the Arabs. Then the Arabs made a move on them, guess what happened next?
Having looked it up, the reasons for the battle may have been far simpler with the Sassanid royalty living in Chang'an being a convenient excuse/propaganda. The Umayyads deposed a local ruler in the region which resulted in a Tang response. The Tang sent an army to reinstate their vassal and succeeded, keeping several garrisons nearby to keep an eye on things. The Abassids then overthrew the Umayyads and wanted to consolidate the formers territories, cue confrontation.
The Tibetan Plateau stands over 4.5 kilometres above sea level and is surrounded by imposing mountain ranges that harbour the world's two highest summits, Mount Everest and K2. Marching an army of conquest in to this region with thoughts of victory is a fool's errand. The geography of the nation of Switzerland has much of the same defensive advantages, however not the same religious and political significance. The Tibetan Plateau is a natural fortress that any sane person would fear to attack. This video is an epic revelation to my former self. Great work KaG, Bravo.
Yes, but you have to also consider that the Tibetan Plateau can't sustain a sizeable population on their own because of how bare and unfertile is the land. Tibet was always destined to be a state influenced by one of their powerfull neighbours, China or India, just happened that the former was the winning side.
I love the ending when the far-reaching effects of the battle are discussed. If this ever comes up in future battles, I would like that you include it there as well!
Thanks for these informations guys! I had never heard of this battle, and therefore, I was unaware of it's importance. To think that great shocks that seem to be indecisive, or at least, not so impactating at their time - Manzikert, Lepanto, etc - creates much larger repercussions over time. Once again, thanks. There should be more people acting like you guys in the world. Peace.
I had, but only recently. It might be less talked about because details about the battle are scarce, sources are conflicted, and it didn't result in much direct territorial changes.
No, they didin't, the Abbasids never extended that far, in fact the Tang and Abbadis quickly became allies afterwards. The current state of Tarim Basin was done by the Karakanid Turks who waged a jihad and took over the region then forcefully converted the locals to Islam. Google it
M Learn more history before making biased comments. Was China ruled by other ethnicities other than Han for the most part of the history? Come on, from Xia(夏) or Shang (商)to modern PRC. China was only partially ruled in the northern area by minorities in the period of five barbaric uprising(五胡乱华), then Liao(辽) and Jin(金) as well as defeated Japan. Only Mongols and Manchurian/Jurchens managed to take complete control of China in Yuan(元) and Qing dynasties(清). Xiongnu(匈奴), Gokturks(突厥汗国), Uyghur(畏兀儿;回鹘)Oirat(瓦剌), and Zungaria(准噶尔) were influential nomadic regimes at the border, but they never managed to establish a recognized dynasty in Chinese heartland. Thus, the combined history of China under non-Han Chinese rule only count for about 1000 years. What about the other 3000 to 4000 years? It's still under the control of Han Chinese. If you count total control of China, only Mongols and Jurchens succeeded once respectively, and they were all driven back by Han in their demises. The other major dynasties in Chinese history like Qin(秦), Han(汉), Jin(晋), Song(宋) and Ming(明) are completely ruled by Han Chinese. While Sui(隋) and Tang(唐)are paternally Han ethnicities and use pedigree of their fathers' families instead of their maternal lineages that contain Proto-Mongolic/Turkic/Caucasian genes. Just like you won't describe the kingdom of France is ruled by Austrian or Habsburg if they have mothers or queens from the House of Habsburg. Last but not the least, where's your so-called East Turkestan? It only managed to survive in a short period of time during the turmoil of late Qing dynasty or ROC and surrendered quickly as General Zuo Zongtang (Remember the taste/fear of General Tso's chicken? It's named after him) and General Wang Zhen marched back to Xinjiang. Today, there's only Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, but no such East Turkestan. Turkic ethnicities are living better and enjoy greater gender equality in modern China than under the rule of East Turkestan separatists.
What a well-made history documentary!! It is way better than some similar videos you can find on RUclips, made by those who apparently don't know what they are talking about.

I learned this battle in school in China. Arabian got the paper making technology from captured workers in Chinese army. There is one Chinese captive whose name is Du huan. He stayed in middle East for about 10 years and finally returned to China. He wrote a book about his experience but unfortunately the book was lost in history, but some of its contents were found in other books. It says he was captured in Talas and forced to join the Arabian army to fight in North Africa. He was allowed to return to home in 761, he then got on board a boat in Red sea and went back to Guangzhou, China via Srilanka.
Great! I have always been interested in the Battle of Talas and always remember the date, but really knew very little about the details, most importantly the role of the Turkish cavalry.
great video - chinese troops are pretty clearly Qin dynasty, not Tang (difference of about a millenia there), but good production as always. Shame theres no medieval chinese mods you could use instead for more accurate units.
Their is a mod on ancient China and middle East but it's for medieval 2 total war. I believe it was called asian empires mod. But it was in chinese language. The mod was based on the late ming dynasty and feature several eastern and steppe faction too
Ming(1368-1644) is too late to depict Tang(7th century-10th century) anyway. Tang units are notable for crossbows/heavy bows(连弩/震天弓) and heavy blades (唐刀,陌刀). I assume you can find mods in games like mount and blade.

Another important impact of this battle was that it helped trigger the infamous An Lushan Rebellion (755 - 763 AD), which marked the decline of the Tang Empire.

Hey I have a suggestion about the emblems for Chinese nations, but it’s just my opinion so u can disagree as much as u want. I understand that as China did not use national banners in the same way as the west, u use the name of the dynasty in an emblem, although sometimes there was never that exact emblem in use. Instead of using the kaishu 楷书calligraphy font for the characters, you could use the Seal Script (篆体字 zhuantizi)which we’re used on seals and stamps. Sometimes this font was used on banners. It could make the emblems/icons for Chinese armies or nations in your maps more authentic

Thank you Kings and Generals for covering this battle. It's sad that this battle is rarely talked about, because it's one of the most significant in world history as it altered control over Central Asia forever. China had (on again, off again) impacted that region since the Han Dynasty centuries earlier, but the Tang's defeat at Talas permanently transferred Central Asia out of Chinese hands. Subsequent Chinese dynasties (except the Yuan, but that was ruled by the Mongols) would never again gain any control over Central Asia.

This is a big underrated battle in history. It's the greatest most powerful empire's of the century(8th century)going at each other randomly in the middle of Asia. 3 empires all different in culture but the mightiest in the world at the time.
This is because the rulers of China were not very concerned with the continued expansion of the empire, we did not have a strong interest in areas unsuitable for farming, and the war did not affect the stability and strength of the empire. It was also because the Chinese rulers did not know very well what the world was like in Central Asia further to the west, which was too far away for China.

The clash between two of the biggest empires in the world at that time, Tang army was definitely not to be easily mess with; if it is not the betrayal of their allied force, who knows what the outcome would be.
it would have definetly been a win for the Tangs. granted the arabs were probably better in skill but the tangs teamwork and hard sheilds prevented them from suffering against the Arabs

Mamluks Ball no the four kings after prophet Mohamed dead are relatives and umywad and Abbasid were cousins too so maybe it is one of the reasons
Does not seem likely. The Muslim leaders hated each other even more than some foreign Chinese Dynasty.
Vitalis gotta love how Persia is a fellow civilization that was at least respected by the Han Dynasty and Roman Empire/Republic
Thanks! :-)
China didn't agree =D
Kings and Generals Great video! I has never heard of this Battle before, so im thankful that you took the time to make this so people can learn.
What's up Mary.. Unfortunately I should inform you, Dwarf Fortress is not planned for foreseeable future :(
Yes, but you have to also consider that the Tibetan Plateau can't sustain a sizeable population on their own because of how bare and unfertile is the land. Tibet was always destined to be a state influenced by one of their powerfull neighbours, China or India, just happened that the former was the winning side.
I love the ending when the far-reaching effects of the battle are discussed. If this ever comes up in future battles, I would like that you include it there as well!
Thank you, will do!

Learn more history before making biased comments.
Me too

I learned this battle in school in China. Arabian got the paper making technology from captured workers in Chinese army. There is one Chinese captive whose name is Du huan. He stayed in middle East for about 10 years and finally returned to China. He wrote a book about his experience but unfortunately the book was lost in history, but some of its contents were found in other books. It says he was captured in Talas and forced to join the Arabian army to fight in North Africa. He was allowed to return to home in 761, he then got on board a boat in Red sea and went back to Guangzhou, China via Srilanka.
so interesting ... one day both side of history we will read i think
Great! I have always been interested in the Battle of Talas and always remember the date, but really knew very little about the details, most importantly the role of the Turkish cavalry.
Thank god I subscribed your channel. Made my Sunday
great video - chinese troops are pretty clearly Qin dynasty, not Tang (difference of about a millenia there), but good production as always. Shame theres no medieval chinese mods you could use instead for more accurate units.
Yep, unfortunately. :-(
Their is a mod on ancient China and middle East but it's for medieval 2 total war. I believe it was called asian empires mod. But it was in chinese language. The mod was based on the late ming dynasty and feature several eastern and steppe faction too
If the thumbnail can show a Tang era cataphract that would be cool though
Ming(1368-1644) is too late to depict Tang(7th century-10th century) anyway. Tang units are notable for crossbows/heavy bows(连弩/震天弓) and heavy blades (唐刀,陌刀). I assume you can find mods in games like mount and blade.
SAMAND33 What he mean was that the troops depicted in the video and even the thumbnail, are Qin era troops. The banners in the video themselves even have the character 秦 'Qin' instead of 唐 'Tang'

muslims ottomans not the Turks
It would be interesting if you could explain us more.
"muslims ottomans not the Turks"
Turkic people, not just people of modern day Turkey. One empire after the next came into fruition; Seljuk Turks, Mamluk Empire, Khilji Dynasty etc. This battle almost breathed a new life into the tribal Turks of central asia. Gave them a vision, I think, they never had. Conquest, power and kingdoms.
BIGMrighthere the Manluk empire was caccaustion ( i don’t know how to spell it ) but yeah the Turkish people became Muslims and they after that became great in every term, sad though many Turks still hate Arabs even though they are Muslims and historical allies
@@o7016-c7i The Turkic people are a diverse bunch. There are those in central asia, there are also those from the caucuses region as you said, we've had them in medieval India as well. Mamluks were slave soldiers (not like americas idea of slaves doe lol), a lot of them were of turkic origins. Kazakstanis for example are of turkic descent and live in the Caucasus region.
And you're right, the turks and arabs should have got a long but they allowed themselves to be played by the British. The British played old divide and conquer strategy; pit the Muslims against each other, destroyed the caliphate and walked off as the winner.
after the battle turks became muslim and served as a mercanery for the abbasids and after a century they took the whole control of the abbasids army. they invade persia and whole middle east and create a seljuk empire.

Another important impact of this battle was that it helped trigger the infamous An Lushan Rebellion (755 - 763 AD), which marked the decline of the Tang Empire.
AlfredGanQuan hey! by any chance, do you know how the battle of talas led to technological and cultural transfer? I’m thinking it would be gunpowder and paper making, but I’m not sure. Thank you in advance!

Because of this war Turks joined Islam and they become a superpower for hundreds of years.
@sick turrett
Wrong, Christian empire which was Byzantium collapsed, and Zoroastrian empire which was Sassanid empire collapsed as well no hope for this to comeback that time, there was Omayad empire then came Abbassid empire and both are Islamic superpower of that time, so next must be Islamic to prevail.
Admittedly, I know very little on this topic, but I will look into that, thank you!

After the Persia king Yazdegerd III was beheaded by the Arabs, his son, Peroz III, the last Sasanian king and a large number of Persians fled to China. The Chinese emperor was married to Peroz’s sister and pledged to restore him to his throne. Peroz fight many battles as a commander of the Tang armies. However China withdrew from Central Asia after the An Lushan Rebellion of 755-763 wiped out a quarter of its population.
On his death bed Peroz told his people they can never go home and they are to become Chinese. For centuries after his death Peroz’s fiefdom in China was known as The Realm of the Western King.

Arabs Vs. Chinese
Not so much talked about!
Peace t to China from an Arab
You can be Arab but didn't an Muslim
The Arabs saw the Great Wall of China and immediately retreat lol

The battle happened at Talas in central Asia, no where near the Arab or Chinese homelands just on the edge of their empires.
But many powers are hoping for the china-arabic confliction
It's one of rare occasions where Arabs and Chinese conflicted
This is a big underrated battle in history. It's the greatest most powerful empire's of the century(8th century)going at each other randomly in the middle of Asia. 3 empires all different in culture but the mightiest in the world at the time.
This is because the rulers of China were not very concerned with the continued expansion of the empire, we did not have a strong interest in areas unsuitable for farming, and the war did not affect the stability and strength of the empire. It was also because the Chinese rulers did not know very well what the world was like in Central Asia further to the west, which was too far away for China.
turks, arabs, tibetians, chinese. this is like the ultimate showdown.
@abcde fghij mongols are learning ride a horse at that time LoL
and Chinese general Gao Xianzhi is a Korean descent
@abcde fghij not yet, you will see them few hundred years later. as for the players, it would just be the Mongols vs everyone else
@@luisromanlegionaire mongols were lucky because Muslims at that time they were fighting within themselves if they come b.c 700 we can destroy the mongols
and already we destroyed them battle of ain jalut

Cool video! Can you make videos on Tang-Turk War, Tang-Goguryeo War, Mongol-conquest of Southern Song China, and Imjin War?
Thank you. Not an expert on the Chinese history, but I will look into that.
Thank you!
Hello. I'm from Kazakhstan. When Arabs came to CA, turkic nations didn't understand fought with them. Then when Chine Empire came, arabs came anf helped turkic nations. After Atlah battles, turkic nations reverted to Islam peacefully. Converting to Islam started in 752 and ended in 13-14 century. Also some chinese people reverted to Islam. They are dungans now who live in Kazahstan, Kyrgyzstan and China
You must learn something about Qutayba ibn Muslim.
Peacefully? Rather forcefully id say, there were two big massacres committed against Turks by Arabs to convert them to Islam, and Turks were sold into slavery to serve in the abbasid army, get your facts right.
Mate, you have to know how those Dungans did in China and why did they come to your country. :
Peacefully? Are you kidding? So many battles were fought, peoples slaughtered, and cultures destroyed over the centuries to follow!
And Dungans fled China only until 19th century.
Very nice video!
It is recommended that you get to know Su Dingfang, another general of the Tang Empire, and I also look forward to your making a video about Su Dingfang. thanks.
The wrong politics of the Chinese have brought the Turks to the Arabs. Battle of Talas was the most effective reflection of it. Another educational presentation with correct informations. Respect your will. Thank you
this war affected all world history and Turkıc history
As an Arab i am very surprised how we had such a great minded leaders in the past and how dumb and Unworthy we are in the modren Days ...

One of the most amazing battle ever happened in Asia or even in the world in my humble opinion. The clash between two of the biggest empires in the world at that time, Tang army was definitely not to be easily mess with; if it is not the betrayal of their allied force, who knows what the outcome would be.
it would have definetly been a win for the Tangs. granted the arabs were probably better in skill but the tangs teamwork and hard sheilds prevented them from suffering against the Arabs
similar to the early days Romans, China would absorb new cultures, capable generals would adopt their fighting styles, making new settlers get use to new climate and terrain
