My family is from Cyprus, and when I visited there I had a change to meet them also. They told me that they were living in peace with the Greek people before all those political manipulations took place. They also told me the times before the Turkish operation was very hard and brutal for them. Their village was occupied by Greek army and Eoka and many slaughters took place in front of their eyes. I don't mean that we did not do anything wrong and of course it is very sad for both sides. Having lived for some years in Greece let me offer you some extra historical information about this period. The millitary junta running Greece was very unpopular and a year prior they had attacked young students in Athens protesting against their regime the 1973 anti-junta rally in the university of Athens had several dead and wounded. Makarios on the other hand refused to be the puppet of the curnals running the junta so the Enosis was a pretext to overthrow him and have a loyal guy there. So the whole thing pretty much started because the military coup in Greece was on it's last legs and tried desperately to survive The sad part i experienced being in both Greece and Turkey was that the average people never were pro-war, but they still allow goverments and great powers to play them like dolls. Greece always was influenced by UK and USA and Turkey by USA and lately Russia. Grow up and realise that the days of Byzantium and Ottoman are behind us and try live a normal life the superpowers of the world are no longer Turkey and Greece.
as a Greek I couldn't agree more. Sad thing being under a regime that is hateful towards anyone but themselves. History tells us that when a regime is on the brink of collapse they always start a war. And that's what happened with Cyprus
Only resolution with the islands would be a joint alowence for both populations imho. There should be a non militarized zone and a no fly zone for military aircrafts to prevent future clashes at it happens frequently. Turkish air force is an agressor on that demand while greek air force also makes agressive flights time to time. The real problem is the governments, while greeks are mild the Turkish government today is shifting towards nationalism and islamism day by day. Which is the opposite of 1974. The real red line with the islands is the territorial waters, there has to be a joint economical zone for that which needs to be accapted by both nations, only non stop passage allowed for military and a free movement for the individuals and other vessels. All of this might prevent the problems about who has the land and water. It can be, should be and will be resolved like this eventually. It has to be since greeks and Turks who lives in the coasts are not very different. Their lifestyles and cultures are pretty much identical. They just need a common ground guarenteed by their own governments to be happy and to stay out of all this nationalist bullshits.
as a turkish i want to underline about "importance of education". Basically both sides are poor countries and they have no vision for future. Both sides only proud from past, not even TODAY. I wish for peaceful aegea, love from izmir.
Love the series! But if I may ask for one change it would be to put the strengths of the fighting armies in text boxes while you present them.. Gets so hard to remember and compare all those numbers when you can't see them at the same time 😅
Cyprus was leased to the British by the Ottoman Empire for 50 years in exchange for money! They invaded and gave it to the Greeks. Stop telling the lie that the Turks are occupied!
Cyprus is a Greek civilization thousands of years back, from the first civilizations of ancient Greece. Don't ignore it. At some point, Turks also entered. I wish that there will be a solution and that the Turkish politicians will stop asking for new conquests and spreading hatred so that the two peoples can live in peace. Erdogan is very much to blame for this.
Cyprus was occupied, brother, because the Ottomans had rented the island to the British. Yes, the administration was left to the British. But actually Cyprus was Ottoman territory. When the Turks formed an alliance against the British in the First World War, the British completely annexed the island. Later, until the Republic of Turkey became the guarantor state. Türkiye and the Turks on the island did not have a say in the region.
i was there in all of that conflict as a un soldier we rescued many people when the port of limassol fell to the greek cypriot forces. many women and children were imprisoned in a football stadium, and at great risk to our selves a few of us negotiated with the greek cypriots who were pretty high and gun happy after their victory there but we got many civilians out, we also managed to convoy many mixed nationals from areas under direct fire to safety;at various times, delicate times,
@@williamdavis9562 He never mentioned the burning of entire villages or slaughtering of inhabitants, and the corralling of civilians into football stadiums was as he said for 'imprisonment' not extermination. Why engage a force militarily when it can be achieved diplomatically.
@@williamdavis9562 Atrocities against Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots did occur, but what I meant is that in the situation David Gaston mentioned, there were no instances of the violence you are implying and he proves in his encounter that diplomacy is just as effective as force in those occurrences.
@Roygbiv 1) There we no instances of violence in the situation described by David Gaston, maybe you should read my comment again. 2) Ethnic cleansing and genocide are the same thing, both are mass murders based on ethnic prejudice. 3) Last I recall I wasn't even born anytime near the War in Cyprus so I am pretty sure I didn't try to commit an ethnic cleansing. 4) And lastly, the ethnic killings were mutual, the argument that it was 'self-defence' is a commonly used arguments by Turks, especially in the case of the Armenian genocide. So are you telling me that the massacres at Asha, Prastio, Eptakomi and Angolemi, where Turkish Cypriot militia men and Turkish soldiers tied up civilians (including women and children), shot them and dumped their bodies in mass graves were in self defence. If you want any of the links to the evidence of these massacres, the European Parliament has quite a few, so just dm me.
@Roygbiv Once again whats with all the 'you'. No I did not start the war in Cyprus, no I am not at fault and no, I wasn't trying to put an end to Turkish existence anywhere lmao. Lets look at the facts here, seeing as I've already proven you wrong I may as well continue to do so. Ethnic killings between the two sides did happen before war broke out but on a relatively minor scale. EOKA led a coup which removed the Government and took over, Turkey then invaded, war then broke out. Arguments for who started would therefore bounce between different sides, Turks arguing Greeks and vice versa. Escalation of the war was caused by Turkey however, seeing as after the first invasion, EOKA fell and the old Government came back in and therefore wanted peace again, but Turkey pressed on and invaded which led to thousands more dying and severe escalation. So Turkey would be the right person to blame for escalation and for the state the war got to. Lastly, neither side's Government were attempting to commit genocide although both sides did have groups of soldiers who did so, and to answer your earlier statement, if records are correct more Greek Cypriot civilians were recorded to have been killed than Turkish Cypriots.

EOKA was an guerrilla organization formed at 1955 that fought a campaign for the end of British rule over Cyprus. EOKA B was formed on 1971 and had a way more nationalist goals in mind. It was in fact considered a terrorist organization by RC.
@@hwhshhsjsjahzjsnns6719 EOKA B did that. Two completely different organizations. And trust me many Greeks think "than god for EOKA B that way we got rid of our junta". EOKA fought for the independence of cyprus 10 to 20 years before 74.

I'm not saying turks were all innocent in this scenario because both communities has produced its own melodramatic accounts of the December 1963 fighting but i think it is quite easy to see the discrimination and the violence, hatred against turkish cypriots by both the goverment and the majority of the people(greek cypriots).

UK still has several military bases on the island which many want rid of, but with a split and weak government I don’t see those bases being left any time soon. The bases in question provide secure Sigint and air bases to the Med and Middle East.
Unfortunately we still have those like our “Cyprus is Greek” chap spouting rubbish that doesn’t make sense which is underlined after watching this video. The answer will shock you.
Does "peasants" held the industrial part of the country, had their own militias which had more than "rusty rifles", were supported by almost all the navy and air force (they could have blocked the african troops in Morocco but were incompetent), integrated thousands of international volunters to their army ranks (some of them veterans from WWI), were supported massively by the Soviet Union, Mexico, etc.
Saying both sides werent equally matched is at best debatable.
@@bluehelmi1672 The issue is that the Spanish Air Force in 1936 consisted of about 13 biplanes of varying levels of outdatedness.
Hence why the German air lift succeeded. See Howson's book Arms for Spain for more detail, but arms dealers would often charge upwards of 200% market price for very outdated rifles. (The 1st British volunteers in Spain went into action at Lopera armed with m1888 Manlicher rifles without the necessary en bloc clips meaning they were effectivley single shot weapons.)
After this, the Republic's reliance on militias in mid 1936 meant that resistance to the Army of Africa was wholy ineffective as militias wouldn't fight outside their home provinces or even their villages. They were steamrolled in open country due to lack of experience in this kind of warfare and the nationalists were able to sweep up the nation, connect their disparate territory. By the time of the International Brigades arrving en masse in November 1936 the Nationalists already had Madrid under siege, prevented the Catalans from taking Zaragoza, and taken Irun cutting the Basque region off from any possible French aid (which would realistically never arrive anyway given Franc'es political situation)

Soviet Support came (as all Soviet support did) at the end of massive expenditure and the effective morgaging of Spain's entire gold reserve.
So by the end of 1936 we have a relatively inefficent industry, supported by an indifferent ally, and an ally across the ocean, unable to help due to Nationalist dominance of the sea (thanks to the sailor's committees being very coy in the running of their ships and the admirals desrting to the nationalists) whose military, frankly, isn't and is only effective in urban warfare.
vs a highly trained army, with a strong political grip on their zone of control, backed by two allies who were in it up to the hilt in exchange for economic concessions. (the Soviets never sent anymore than advisors the CTV numbered 70,000 by war's end)
So yeah it is an unbalanced fight. Not unwinnable given some more favourable circumstances for the Republic or more overt Soviet support, or the involvement of France and Britain. (or even just France) But these things were unlikely for a myriad of reasons.

Countries that have always pissed of the west will be seen as the ‘baddies’ by the west. So countries like Russia, Iran,...are included in this list as well.

So the whole thing pretty much started because the military coup in Greece was on it's last legs and tried desperately to survive
The sad part i experienced being in both Greece and Turkey was that the average people never were pro-war, but they still allow goverments and great powers to play them like dolls. Greece always was influenced by UK and USA and Turkey by USA and lately Russia. Grow up and realise that the days of Byzantium and Ottoman are behind us and try live a normal life the superpowers of the world are no longer Turkey and Greece.
As a Greek I can say that (nowadays) we don't want to expand.we just want to keep our territory and protect our islands from the Turks
as a Greek I couldn't agree more.

@@AgeofDoom wtf is that logic by your logic everyone should go back to their original places. We talk about law and agreements between nations.
i was there in all of that conflict as a un soldier we rescued many people when the port of limassol fell to the greek cypriot forces. many women and children were imprisoned in a football stadium, and at great risk to our selves a few of us negotiated with the greek cypriots who were pretty high and gun happy after their victory there but we got many civilians out, we also managed to convoy many mixed nationals from areas under direct fire to safety;at various times, delicate times,
@@williamdavis9562 He never mentioned the burning of entire villages or slaughtering of inhabitants, and the corralling of civilians into football stadiums was as he said for 'imprisonment' not extermination.
@Roygbiv I could keep this argument going for days on end but then again, I have already proven you wrong are you keep coming back so it's a whatever.

EOKA was an guerrilla organization formed at 1955 that fought a campaign for the end of British rule over Cyprus. EOKA B was formed on 1971 and had a way more nationalist goals in mind. It was in fact considered a terrorist organization by RC.

@@mp44christos Interesting,so i'd assume Bloody Christmas the event that took place in 1963 was also EOKA B's work who was formed on 1971 ?
@@wanshitong7877 different set of events. no its was not eoka A or B it was an intercomulal violence instigated by both sides.
@@mp44christos "instigated by both sides." yeah sure buddy here are some fact that states otherwise:
-"The spark that ignited the explosion of violence happened at 02:30hrs on the 21st December when Greek Cypriot 'special constables' shot dead two Turkish Cypriots who refused to show their identity cards."
-"After the shooting, crowds of turkish cypriots gathered in the northern part of Nicosia, often led by the Turkish Resistance Organisation(TMT).On 22 December, the funerals of the victims were held without incident. However, shooting broke out on the evening of December 22.Cars full of armed Greek Cypriots roamed through the streets of Nicosia and fired indiscriminately and Turkish Cypriots fired at patrolling cars."
-Robert Stephens in 'Cyprus - A place of Arms' describes the fighting as follows;
"Greek Cypriot security forces, police and armed irregulars, mostly ex-EOKA, launched a massive counter-attack on the Turkish Cypriot positions in Nicosia."
and this is the exact reason Turkey invaded the island in 1974 to prevent same shit happening again.
I'm not saying turks were all innocent in this scenario because both communities has produced its own melodramatic accounts of the December 1963 fighting but i think it is quite easy to see the discrimination and the violence, hatred against turkish cypriots by both the goverment and the majority of the people(greek cypriots).
