My family is from Cyprus, and when I visited there I had a change to meet them also. They told me that they were living in peace with the Greek people before all those political manipulations took place. They also told me the times before the Turkish operation was very hard and brutal for them. Their village was occupied by Greek army and Eoka and many slaughters took place in front of their eyes. I don't mean that we did not do anything wrong and of course it is very sad for both sides. But when I witnessed what my relatives and Turkish cypriots have faced with, I became quite sure that Turkey was right to attack. Soviet Support came (as all Soviet support did) at the end of massive expenditure and the effective morgaging of Spain's entire gold reserve.
So by the end of 1936 we have a relatively inefficent industry, supported by an indifferent ally, and an ally across the ocean, unable to help due to Nationalist dominance of the sea (thanks to the sailor's committees being very coy in the running of their ships and the admirals desrting to the nationalists) whose military, frankly, isn't and is only effective in urban warfare.
vs a highly trained army, with a strong political grip on their zone of control, backed by two allies who were in it up to the hilt in exchange for economic concessions. (the Soviets never sent anymore than advisors the CTV numbered 70,000 by war's end)
So yeah it is an unbalanced fight. Not unwinnable given some more favourable circumstances for the Republic or more overt Soviet support, or the involvement of France and Britain. (or even just France) But these things were unlikely for a myriad of reasons.

Having lived for some years in Greece let me offer you some extra historical information about this period.
The millitary junta running Greece was very unpopular and a year prior they had attacked young students in Athens protesting against their regime the 1973 anti-junta rally in the university of Athens had several dead and wounded. Makarios on the other hand refused to be the puppet of the curnals running the junta so the Enosis was a pretext to overthrow him and have a loyal guy there.
So the whole thing pretty much started because the military coup in Greece was on it's last legs and tried desperately to survive
The sad part i experienced being in both Greece and Turkey was that the average people never were pro-war, but they still allow goverments and great powers to play them like dolls. Greece always was influenced by UK and USA and Turkey by USA and lately Russia. Grow up and realise that the days of Byzantium and Ottoman are behind us and try live a normal life the superpowers of the world are no longer Turkey and Greece.

Only resolution with the islands would be a joint alowence for both populations imho. There should be a non militarized zone and a no fly zone for military aircrafts to prevent future clashes at it happens frequently. Turkish air force is an agressor on that demand while greek air force also makes agressive flights time to time.
The real problem is the governments, while greeks are mild the Turkish government today is shifting towards nationalism and islamism day by day. Which is the opposite of 1974.
The real red line with the islands is the territorial waters, there has to be a joint economical zone for that which needs to be accapted by both nations, only non stop passage allowed for military and a free movement for the individuals and other vessels.
All of this might prevent the problems about who has the land and water. It can be, should be and will be resolved like this eventually. It has to be since greeks and Turks who lives in the coasts are not very different. Their lifestyles and cultures are pretty much identical. They just need a common ground guarenteed by their own governments to be happy and to stay out of all this nationalist bullshits.

-"After the shooting, crowds of turkish cypriots gathered in the northern part of Nicosia, often led by the Turkish Resistance Organisation(TMT).On 22 December, the funerals of the victims were held without incident. However, shooting broke out on the evening of December 22.Cars full of armed Greek Cypriots roamed through the streets of Nicosia and fired indiscriminately and Turkish Cypriots fired at patrolling cars."

"Greek Cypriot security forces, police and armed irregulars, mostly ex-EOKA, launched a massive counter-attack on the Turkish Cypriot positions in Nicosia."

From Cyprus to Ireland, and from Palestine to Sri Lanka, the British Empire left a legacy of poisonous hatred and ethnic conflict. Why? While all colonial empires were bad, the British had an especially harmful arrangement for dealing with subject peoples, namely, dealing in "communal" not "individual" rights. Of course, this also served their "divide and rule" tactics (used by all imperial systems in history) but it was not only that, for you can see its harmful consequences in Britain itself today ("parallel societies", "Londonistan" etc.) Compare this with the French colonial practices, which, in my view, were far more progressive and beneficial. Of course the French were also racist and exploitative, and committed horrible atrocities in their colonies (Algeria, Vietnam etc.) But French ideology and nation-building were (and remain) Universalist and Republican. Thus, in former French colonies, there developed a progressive and unifying anti-colonial nationalism, that helped form nations, not "communities" that were at each other's throat....

    • @mrbarbastathiss3739
      @mrbarbastathiss3739 5 лет назад +8

@lvan Big Nob I wouldn't say that. Morocco and Vietnam are relatively successful states, for example. But this isn't my point. All colonial empires were bad, racist and exploitative but the British practice of dealing with people in a "communal" basis meant that all ethno-cultural and religious differences were made a million times worse, and you can see the results the world over, and even in Britain itself. The most tragic example is, of course, the Indian Subcontinent.

@ I am very aware of the hatred between these two peoples. My point was about the nature of British statecraft and its harmful consequences, including in Britain itself today (when people accuse the British, they usually speak of the "divide and rule" tactics, which, if you read carefully my original comment, I do not). Namely, the main problem was dealing in "communal", not "individual rights". You might agree or disagree with that, but don't say that I hate the British. I've been to Britain and I liked many things there, and especially the people. A lot. But that has nothing to do with historical assessments or the practice of statecraft.

Everyone should be proud of his/her culture, but not defend aggressive expansion and violence. And to repeat, I'm not saying that the French were better people or had nicer motives than the British, just that their way of governing helped form modern nation-states. There are other areas where the British proved to be much more progressive, women's rights for example.

@Roygbiv 1) There we no instances of violence in the situation described by David Gaston, maybe you should read my comment again. 2) Ethnic cleansing and genocide are the same thing, both are mass murders based on ethnic prejudice. 3) Last I recall I wasn't even born anytime near the War in Cyprus so I am pretty sure I didn't try to commit an ethnic cleansing. 4) And lastly, the ethnic killings were mutual, the argument that it was 'self-defence' is a commonly used arguments by Turks, especially in the case of the Armenian genocide. So are you telling me that the massacres at Asha, Prastio, Eptakomi and Angolemi, where Turkish Cypriot militia men and Turkish soldiers tied up civilians (including women and children), shot them and dumped their bodies in mass graves were in self defence. If you want any of the links to the evidence of these massacres, the European Parliament has quite a few, so just dm me.

@Roygbiv Once again whats with all the 'you'. No I did not start the war in Cyprus, no I am not at fault and no, I wasn't trying to put an end to Turkish existence anywhere lmao. Lets look at the facts here, seeing as I've already proven you wrong I may as well continue to do so. Ethnic killings between the two sides did happen before war broke out but on a relatively minor scale. EOKA led a coup which removed the Government and took over, Turkey then invaded, war then broke out. Arguments for who started would therefore bounce between different sides, Turks arguing Greeks and vice versa. Escalation of the war was caused by Turkey however, seeing as after the first invasion, EOKA fell and the old Government came back in and therefore wanted peace again, but Turkey pressed on and invaded which led to thousands more dying and severe escalation. So Turkey would be the right person to blame for escalation and for the state the war got to. Lastly, neither side's Government were attempting to commit genocide although both sides did have groups of soldiers who did so, and to answer your earlier statement, if records are correct more Greek Cypriot civilians were recorded to have been killed than Turkish Cypriots.

Nicely done video. You neglected to mention the role of the English though, as they are the ones who divided the population in hopes that they would be too busy fighting each-other instead of uniting to get them off the island. Classic divide and conquer policy. The Cyprus independence in turn was a 1-side achievement by the Greeks, while at the same time Turkey was brought in as an adversary by the English.
Like so many other places (e.g. India), the English desperately tried to hold on the power before f-ing it up and leaving.

Absolutely correct. And needless to say it was the British who promoted and cultivated the Turkish minority as a counterweight to the Greek majority and its demands for enosis (union) with Greece. In an ideal world the island would have become part of Greece in keeping with the will of the overwhelming majority of its native population (not to mention historical justice if one believes in such a thing). The Turkish minority would have fared well enough within Greece (compare the lot of the Muslim minority - including Turks - in Greek Thrace and the Turks on the Dodecanese with that of the Greeks in Istanbul and the islands of Imbros and Tenedos whose numbers have been decimated. Unfortunately realpolitik would have always worked against such an outcome.

There is no need for hate guys between us Greeks and Turkish in this comment section.
Yes the Cyprus Insident is an extremely controversial issue and it is added in long list of beef between our countries due to fact that many of the protagonists are still alive and even if they are not alive they have fathered children that know the story because their fathers fought in this incident like my grandfather fought.
So let's stop arguing between ourselves because kings and generals wouldn't do their job right if they didn't cover incidents just like this.
This is a historic incident that happened and due to the fact that still causes beef and argument between our countries it is very important to know the facts of both sides Greeks and Turks alike.
Also do not take this as an opportunity to address the issue of Vardaska (aka Ex Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) because it is not relevant with this video and as a matter of fact because the agreement that was signed is international and according to the Greek Constitution every agreement that involves two countries can be renegotiated from the start because it is an international law that has been approved from The Hague.
And it happens that I know that there has been a lawsuit against the agreement in the international court of justice in The Hague from Greeks that do not agree with the agreement and we await the result so stop arguing about things that do not involve this video end this creator's because these people are doing an outstanding job of covering history.
