  • In one of our previous videos, we covered the battle of Yarmouk ( • Battle of Yarmouk 636 ... ) between the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic Rashidun Caliphate. This battle largely defined the fate of Eastern Mediterranean, but to the East, Caliphate had another global power to contend with - the Sassanid Empire. Two empires fought each other for more than 20 years, across dozens of battles with the campaign of the Muslim general Khalid ibn al-Walid in 633 and the battle of al-Qadissiyah that took place in 636 being the most crucial among them.

      He was a good commander. But the main reason he was able to defeat the Byzantine and Sassanids was because two great empires had spent the previous 30 years fighting each other over the Levant, and weakening their nations to the breaking point. Without the Byzantine-Persian wars Khalid's chances would have been much lower.

    • @abdmzn
      @abdmzn 5 лет назад +585

      @@TonyTars the Arabs were outnumbered in all fights anyway, and they lost almost none, the result would've been the same in the end, it might just have taken longer. Keep in mind that he also isn't the only good general the Arabs had, they also had the better fighters winning all those duels.
      Ofcourse, them being weakened helped, but I wouldn't say that it was the main reason.

    • @TonyTars
      @TonyTars 5 лет назад +131

      @@abdmzn You bring up having better fighters in duels. How many of the best Persian and Byzantine fighters do you think had already died by the time they took on the Muslims?
      In fact let's reverse the scenario: the Arabs fight for 30 years, then try to take on the fresh armies of Persia and Byzantine!
      There is no way we can ignore the three decades of war and the effect they had on the Persian and Byzantine armies. It's simply not fair or logical.
      The Persians even had a civil war for 3-4 years AFTER the 30 year war, right before taking on the Arabs! Despite all that, it took Arabs 20 years to occupy all of Persia. If it took 20 years for Persians to lose after decades of fighting the Byzantines and among themselves, I honestly don't think Arabs would have been able to defeat them under normal conditions.

    • @abdmzn
      @abdmzn 5 лет назад +313

      @@TonyTars it only took 20 years because it was a large Empire and wasn't easy to occupy by the Arabs while fighting the Byzantines, after the events of this video, it was clean up basically.
      And no, it really doesn't matter, the Arabs still had a massive disadvantage in numbers and technology, and they won against both Empires, losing close to no battles.

  • @sirdook2761

    Important note about the battle. Muslim reinforcements were ordered to come in a small steady stream of reinforcements to make it seem like it was a never ending supply of new warriors. This was made to boost the morale of the muslim fighters and instill fear in their opponents. What the sassisinids didn't know is that some of those ''reinforcements'' were actually troops who were ordered to leave the army and come back in waves. Psychological warfare, muslim generals of that time were something special.

    According to Islamic sources, Ibn Waleed was so successful in his wars, so the soldiers under his command started to speculate that they win all the time because of their leader. Umar talked to Al Waleed and took all his commanding titles away from him, before the speculation damaged the soldiers religious belief against an unbeatable iconic figure. Al Waleed took the decision very politely and joined the army back again as a regular soldier.

      It's true the conditions were similar , but you have to consider how Genghis Khan came to rule .
      He killed a brother a close friend in order to rise up to power , allied himself with the Jin to take down the Tatar just to invade them later.
      Genghis Khan's goals were materialistic , he fought for the spoils of war , Indeed he was a great military leader but with such materialistic ambitions meant that the greatest empire of his won't last and it did fall.
      On the other hand Prophet Mohamed didn't start by killing anyone .
      He only spread the word of God and sadly in return his followers were tortured and killed.
      When he took shelter in madina they welcomed him as most of them converted to islam by their own choice .
      And from there you can see a lot of battles started by the non-muslims which the muslims won , even though there was a huge difference in numbers (3:1 sometimes 4:1).

      @I NSA Where did you get the idea that Persia did not give the world anything,,no scientists ,, no books ,, no universities ..etc Actually, there was an “Iranian Golden Age” before the “Islamic Golden Age”, and the latter was actually a continuation of the former.
      Ibn Nadim mentions a long list of pre-Islamic Pahlavi books which were still available in the 4th century A.H. in Baghdad. Have a look at that list (Al-Fihrist). Biruni also has mentioned a number of pre-Islamic books in his works, particularly in The Remaining Signs of Past Centuries - Wikipedia.
      The works of Islamic scholars directly reference literature on various scientific, mathematical, philosophical, and theological disciplines from pre-Islamic Iran.
      Biruni mentioned another story which shows there was a scientific tradition in Ancient Persia:
      When Qutaibah bin Muslim under the command of Al-Hajjaj bin Yousef was sent to Khwarazmia with a military expedition and conquered it for the second time, he swiftly killed whomever wrote the Khwarazmian native language that knew of the Khwarazmian history, science and culture. He then killed all their Zoroastrian priests and burned and wasted their books, until gradually the illiterate only remained, who knew nothing of writing and hence their history was mostly forgotten.
      So, there were books and libraries in Khwarazm (likely in Khwarazmian language) when Arabs invaded Iran.
      However, in the early centuries of Islam, many Pahlavi books were translated into Arabic (the “current” language of science), and there was no need for those works anymore (so nobody cared to copy those books and they were lost). This way, at least the content of some of those books were preserved to some extent. Unfortunately, many of the translated works were destroyed during the Mongol invasion.
      Also, read about Gundeshapur university in pre-islamic time in Persia- Wikipedia

      Ask any real educated human being, Islam copied christianism. And christianism (like Islam) copied other religions or changed to adjust in other religions to gain poppularity.
      And you can't prove that any god exists. Before comment again, tell him to meet me and then tell him to delete my comment :P
      Also Christians teach in their colleges (theological colleges) that god doesn't exists and religions exist only to help people mentaly and help the poor. Thats why Christians are at the top of this planet and muslims beg to enter those countries.
      ps My comment is still here, your god can't even find a free wifi :P

    • @Thessaloz
      @Thessaloz 5 лет назад +3

      So Christians wrote a fairytale and Islam based on it and "correct it". Islam copied Christianity AND changed/added some things so the same power of the pope/patriarchs etc could go to their imams and leaders. Thats why there are a lot of versions of every religion and especially thats why you will find orders in quran and bible that suits the needs of the leaders and not the humanity in general.
      I doesn't make sense? Quran accept jesus and other figures like older prophets as a vary important figures and messegeres of god, but at the same time they don't agree with them.. Like jesus was a very elect and highly esteemed messenger of God but all his students, so jesus too was a troll spreading lies. What a serious religion!
      ps Your god still sleeping? Where is he? Are you going to prove that god exist or not? I mean its not that hard to prove that god exists, if he trully exist! I suppose he doesn't need a lift to come here! haha
