Darn, I just penned a March 11, 2024, view of my Private Violin Mentor, after Heifetz, Nathan Milstein's Prokofiev
1st Violin Concerto recorded in London w/Carlo Maria Giulini & the Philharmonia by EMI superb Engineers and
here you hear my GOAT Violinist Mentor, No. 2, after Heifetz, {& whom I was NM invited to Privatel Prime study
for 3.5 years at NM's Home, cum Studio in London's Chester Square, in Advanced NM Bowing changing my EM
learned from Poppa Matesky in the Franco-Belgian Tradition to NM's GOAT Bow Arm and Liberated by NM to a
Concert Artist signed under same Concert Artist Management as Nathan Milstein, Henryk Szeryng & Ruggiero

"Musical Brothers" and for Life, meeting back up in Berlin, and later to Paris, joining Stravinsky, Diaghilev,
Arthur Rubinstein, many other Greats aka, Piatigorsky and pianists known, this Violin Concerto of Sergei
Prokofiev was believed by NM his GOAT Violin Composition, knowing this Score inside out & Backwards,
Mr. Milstein recorded this a second or 3rd Time in 1959, in the EMI Recording Studios and WOW & WOW
his Scherzo (Mvt 2) gets me so Wild with excitement it sends a Heifetz Original Pupil to an Outer Galaxy
hearing the NM Wizardry in the Scherzo and his loving Opening in the 1st Mvt. projected initially with a
soft 'sotto voce' "Come on in and I"ll tell you things never heard nor imagined" and in the Scherzo, now
playing for a third hearing writing this I am again beyond Dazzled by Devilish Wizardry of the Milstein
left hand/bow and convinced NM Is The ONLY PEER of HEIFETZ!! Btw, Mr. Heifetz Never recorded the
1st Violin Concerto of Prokofiev out of respect for Milstein's Owned Prokofiev #1! Also I know the real
truth of one on here who asked if NM had recorded the Sibelius & No, NM Never did & purposely not
doing it due his once exclaimed to me on a NM "D minor Day" bringing my Sibelius along {and after
having been on a huge Concert Tour of Scandinavia playing the Sibelius, and before All Five Sibelius
Daughters by their Request in the Birth-House of Jean Sibelius on his Centenery in Hameenlinna, FI,
for the Finnish Official Gov't Concert-Ceremony by Finnish Minister of Culture, then proclaiming the

all Five Sibelius Daughters w/Madam Sibelius ailing yet sending me gorgeous Flowers homegrown
in her Helsinki Garden} and back to NM re my bringing the Sibelius, who said 'Put it Away, Elisabeth'
to my utter astonishment and NM's reply of he would not teach it due JH's Piece! Never told before
and not on YT, this Is the reason NM deferred the Sibelius. Back to the Prokofiev in its dreamy and
via Milstein Aroma of Clouds floating Up and away from ugly Earth yet trilling beautifully in skied
darkening to night 3rd Mvt. with the spiritual qualities of my Mentor and Great Friend of 24 Years,
floating close and closer to Where God Lives Now in Heaven and welcomed at The Gate of St.

According to several sources, Milstein premiered this concerto in Russia in 1923 but with piano accompaniment. The pianist was Vladimir Horowitz. By the time Milstein recorded it, he had been playing it for approximately 40 years. This is an excellent recording. If you can find Milstein's recording of the Sibelius concerto it would be nice to hear.

As from ~ "My Guinea Pig Pupil of Heifetz, on whom I can now violinistically experiment!"~ Direct Quote of my Mentor, after Heifetz, *Nathan Milstein, and in London for 3.5. years privately at his Chester Square in London, SW1, home and later NM invited to be his Assist-Helper for the Debut of the Nathan Milstein International Violin Master Course/s in Summer 1970, in Zurich, and also in 1972, then "On Standby" throughout the 1970s back in the US for professional performing commitments plus Artist Teaching, overseeing Louis Krasner's Class of 22 pupils whilst on Sabbatical from Syracuse University, in Syracuse, New York. I met/knew Nathan Milstein most well as both my private Iconic Violin Mentor, changing my Bow Arm to an NM mirrored 'model' and elevating my concert playing to levels never imagined! I knew much about Mr. Milstein's obsession with his first Violin transcription, 'Paganinianna', and later when he was transfixed for 3.5 years at home in London at Chester Square working feverishly on his own Solo Violin transcription from the 'Mephisto Waltz; by Franz Liszt, to Solo Violin, "Mephisto" by Nathan Milstein! It is not as titled "Arranged" ~ This is False, and not honouring the actual transcription of one of the most beyond difficult pieces by Franz Liszt for Piano, and mastered by Mr. Milstein's life-long Musical Brother, Vladimir Horowitz, and who inspired Mr. Milstein to do this which took initially 3.5 years with an obsession of his 'Mission' to do this for future generations or one or two who might be able to present it perhaps Never like Milstein, but for a few who could actually musically/technically traverse the Mt. Everest's in this gloried Nathan Milstein dare-devil piece!!! My feeling upon hearing this specific Live recording in concert, is that it is Not Nathan Milstein, but by someone who may have studied with Mr. Milstein, but hasn't the fluidity of Bowing and Not at the Frog, which NM had in Spades with usage of a Bow Arm No Violinist had during the Milstein Reign with Heifetz!!! It is questionable to me, knowing his playing most well??? I heard NM here in Chicago at Orchestra Hall, giving his 'Mephisto' for Solo Violin Premiere to thousands of disbelieving violin aficionados and Violinist colleagues in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, sitting with our renowned Music Critic, Robert C. Marsh, of the 'Chicago Sun-Times' newspaper, who astonished by Mr. Milstein's playing at aged 83, turned to me whispering in my ear, "Lizzie, How can Mr. Milstein play like God now at age 83?" to which I quietly whispered back, "Because He Is Milstein, Bob!!" When Milstein had dispatched his 'child' "Mephisto" the thrice Sold Out Orchestra Hall Chicago Audience rose, almost in sync, yelling/thumping their collective feet, and applauding so long and hard, it did go on over 5 minutes to an Ovation which my friend, Robert C. Marsh, wrote about in his Sun-Times newspaper Column, with an Enormous Headline about Milstein's Youth!!! So crazy for the Godly performance of my mentor, Bob Marsh requested I take him backstage to meet the fabled Violinist, Only Peer of Jascha Heifetz, which I gladly did, being Mr. Milstein's 'Greeter' for the Evening and I saw a famed Music Critic, close friend of George Szell, Music Director/Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, utterly transfixed into a Fan who bowed upon my introducing him to my by-then close friend/mentor, Nathan Milstein!!! Again, upon hearing this most closely, I am reserving judgement on whether or not it Is Nathan Milstein, due to a bumpiness at the Frog of the Bow Bowing which NM Never exhibited both privately nor ever in the Concert Hall, and I heard his premier of 'Mephisto' here in Chicago, with absolute gloriousness of musical heart & bedeviled wizardry which was made child's
play by the Bowing Mystique of Nathan Milstein!!! Whomever this is, it Is 'Bloody' Good!!! {'Bloody' being a UK phrase of for sure compliments!!!} Thank you to the Owner of this rare public performance ... I am Not Sure it Is the Authentic Nathan Milstein I knew for 24 Years and So Well, Violinistically, and in Concert Hall Performance ... ??? For Now ~ It remains a Mystery to me ... @@serodriguez~ Dear Mr. Rodriguez ... I thought although very fatigued, I was writing about the full Subject of Nathan Milstein's 3.5 years obsession with transcribing the "Mephisto Waltz" of Franz Liszt for Piano to NM's "Mephisto" for Solo Violin, so inspired by his 'musical brother' for Life, Vladimir Horowitz's gloried 'ownership' of the "Mephisto Waltz" for Piano of Liszt! I did make a serious mistake writing my Post for the Mephisto on Here, yet thinking I was commenting on The actual YT Recording site of Mr. Milstein's Epic EMI Recording of both Prokofiev Violin Concerti, and thinking it No. 1 & with Carlo Maria Giulini and the Philharmonia which I am deeply beyond familiar with, having received marvellous coaching on Prokofiev I from Nathan Milstein, my private violin mentor of 3.5 years in his Chester Square home in London, UK, and continuing over the 24 years of our ongoing musical violinistic and personal with the Milstein Family Friendship!!! Please accept my apologies for such a "dummkopf" error ... A Lack of sleep in the past 2 Weeks obviously made me penn my remarks in the Wrong Place, but for what it might be worth, the above Reply re the Nathan Milstein Transcription to Solo Violin and titled by Mr. Milstein, "Mephisto" for Solo Violin, when finally allowed to be published after NM giving his "child", aka, "Mephisto" its premiere in both NYC and here in Chicago, {and there to listen/visit/act as NM's "Greeter" backstage in Orchestra Hall in Chicago} to which our revered Music Critic, Robert C. Marsh, of the 'Sun-Times' newspaper turned to me & during Mr. Milstein's In Performance Live offering to the Thrice Sold Out audience, whispering, "How can Mr. Milstein sound like God at age 82!!??" to my whispered back response, "Because, Bob, He Is Milstein!!!" So, if you choose to feature Nathan Milstein in his Transcribed for Solo Violin "Mephisto" of Liszt, here, you can mention the near transfixed response of the huge Chicago Orchestra Hall Audience and Music Review of Robert C. Marsh, of Milstein in what would be his Last Violin Recital in Chicago, which, btw, was known always as "Milstein's Town"!!!!! My apologies, Mr. Rodriquez, for such an error, yet an opportunity to mention the idea of featuring NM's Own Transcription from Piano to Solo Violin of NM's titled, "Mephisto" for solo violin! With many projects accumulating all at once, I may be a touch confused and beg your kind indulgence!! I do know Prokofiev I in D Major beyond well, and Mr. Milstein's Epic Recording of this profound violin concerto which Mr. Milstein w/his long time friend/Colleague, 'Pope of Music', Carlo Maria Giulini, and the Philharmonia recorded in 1959, and which is so remarkable in Milstein's bedeviled wizardry {Scherzo, OMG!!!} even Mr. Heifetz, my first Epic Violin Mentor, never recorded Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto, due his {JH} deepest respect for Milstein's 'ownership' of the First Violin Concerto in D Major of Prokofiev!!!! To All Whom It Does Concern writing in Here re my Private Violin Mentor, Nathan Milstein ~
I accidentally made an Immense Error, writing on Here instead of the YT site which has a recording of Mr. Milstein's with a Question Mark, ?, not sure it IS Milstein, but writing my own words about what I thought was still on That Site of "Mephisto" for Solo Violin as performed quite a while ago my GOAT Violinist w/Heifetz, *Nathan Milstein, could be termed 'Composer' Mentor, but the "Transcriber' of Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz" for Piano, to *NM's "Mephisto" for Solo Violin, and who spent over 3.5 Years & obsessively, transcribing the famed "Mephisto Waltz" for Piano {and as performed over decades by Mr. Milstein's closest friend/'musical brother', Vladimir Horowitz}, who NM determined to make 'Mephisto' for Solo Violin available to future violinists to perform as part of Mr. Milstein's Legacy of GOAT Violinist w/Heifetz of the Twentieth Century and IMO, & thus far, the Twenty First Century!! Mea Culpa! This is Not the YT Mephisto by Milstein site, and I offer sincere embarrassed apologies to All who may see my comments just below, being beyond fatigued, writing of 'Mephisto' instead of the Epic Recording of my mentor, of 3.5 Years private advanced Bowing/Interpretations of Music, Nathan Milstein, with great friend, Carlo Maria Giulini, whom I called, "the Pope of Music" when playing with the Maestro, knowing him and gifted by Giulini, with an amazing set of superb fingerings to the difficult Opening of Brahms' Violin Concerto, who prior to Conducting, was an astonishing Violist!!! This Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Maj, IMO, is the Ultimate in my Mentor, Nathan Milstein's Godly Hands, w/Giulini and Philharmonia, providing what I will term, 'Star Wars' seeming Special Orchestral Effects and especially in the 'Scherzo' and throughout the entire extraordinary First Violin Concerto of good friend of Milstein's, Prokofiev!!! I believe Mr. Milstein's Recording here defies all Mortal's playing Violin and know for a fact, from my
'other' and First Iconic Violin Mentor, Jascha Heifetz, that Milstein's playing/musicianship & colleague-ship, was treasured by Mr. Heifetz, who deferred recording Prokofiev I in respect of his 'Friend', Milstein! This was told to me by Mr. 'H' in our last visit at his Malibu Beach House in Malibu, California ... These comments, and rare, are my offering to apologize for my stupid mistake of penning all about 'Mephisto' on the Wrong YT Site/Recording!!! I am Okay, just too fatigued when writing of NM's Transcription of "Mephisto" for Solo Violin the other day ~ With musical warm wishes to All Violinists/Musicians listening to the Milstein Masterpiece EMI Recording of Prokofiev I in D Major, w/Carlo Maria Giulini & the Philharmonia & Side II of S. Prokofiev II in g minor, I remain, Still Here & Okay!!! Elisabeth Matesky ~ Wednesday, 26th of July, 2 0 2 3/ US ~ Reference: See Below on my other Posts! Btw, Szigeti premiered Prok #1!
