Interesting to compare, Gilels with the Chicago SO 1958 under Reiner, two years later Richter with the same orchestra under Leinsdorf. Both very similiar in their common Russian piano school , and there is no better nor worse than... - Richter perhaps with, typical for him, more structure from beginning to end, Gilels with more flowering sound (like Rubinstein).

I've lost count the number of times I've heard this. It's really one of the greatest concerti of the 20th century. I always keep coming back to this fantastic performance by Milstein. It's ironic that this performance is so great while Milstein himself said he wasn't particularly fond of the music. He liked the second movement more than the first and third. No matter. This is the recording to have.

I am very surprised that I am the first commentator on this recording in two years since it was published! Legendary Soviet artists David Oistrakh and Kyril Kondrashin are the marvel of the art of classical music.

Fiddle authorities insist Menuhin was past his prime at around age 16, but he never stopped developing musically and spiritually. And no apologies here for technique or tone. By all means listen to the youngster with his mentor Enesco and the young man who reached out to Furtwangler after the war, but I cherish this recording too.

certainly a very good performance. But compared to the first recording with E. Bay it lacks the fire, intensity and in spots the accuracy of intonation that I'm used to from Heifetz. I also don't like the "echo" effect in this recording. sounds like it may have been added to "modernize" it.
