I had the privilege of playing in the horn section of the Nashville Symphony (in the late 1950's) when Milstein played the Brahms Violin Concerto. It was a wonderful experience.
As Nathan Milstein's first Private Quoting NM, "Guinea Pig Heifetz Pupil on whom I can now experiment, violinistically, dear Elisabeth!", I am thrilled to have received this marvellous & not previously heard nor known of, Live recorded performance of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Jean Martinon, then Music Director/Conductor, with Nathan Milstein, {whom I would soon meet in London, in later 1968, and then be invited upon playing Bach's Chaconne in D, for Mr. Milstein, at his newly moved to home in Chester Square in London, UK}, Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, which is Beyond description but surely displays my private mentor of 3 & 1/2 years Mastery and Artistry Above & Beyond any other excepting Jascha Heifetz, in his dazzling wizardry which is such that even the Devil is hurled off the Planet, not Milstein, which I've often wondered, if Prokofiev did not compose to 'abuse' violinists but in the Godly Hands of Nathan Milstein, the Devil is Morte!! This is immediately recognizable with the Milstein Sound in the Opening bars of the Violin Concerto, and in the passages Mr. Milstein chooses to execute on the Sul G with his lustrous yet Sound of Ages Tone and excites even The Greatest of All, Mr. Heifetz, with whom I also studied in his original Violin Master Class (subsequently filmed & on YT) but it is interesting to note Jascha Heifetz, never recorded the First Violin Concerto of Prokofiev, and I do believe, having studied intensely with both Grand Masters, that Mr. Heifetz, so honoured Milstein's 'ownership' of the First Violin Concerto of Prokofiev, he decided to not record Prokofiev #1 in tribute to Milstein, and whom Mr. 'H', once told me at his Malibu Beach home, "Ah! Milstein is my friend!" {direct JH Quote to yours truly, July Fourth in, I believe, 1977} and never forgotten! The Milstein identification with Everything Prokofiev in sound, Style, innuendi, nuance, colored intonation, and his miraculous bowing's which follow the melodic line even in the most hazardous passages, is Complete! Often during our Chester Square 'Sessions' lasting anywhere from minimum 3 & 1/2 hrs to 5 Hrs. each time, Mr. Milstein would show me his many 'back-up' bowing and/or fingering's and told me often he hadn't any but sometimes if he felt a certain emotion playing in concert, he would just change bowing's or fingerings to suit his mood or inspiration in the moment! It is very important for violin aficionados to know this, because I am deeply familiar with the recording made in London, of Milstein with the Philharmonia, and Carlo Maria Giulini, conducting the Prokofiev First Violin Concerto, which is altogether different from this 1968 LIVE recorded performance of Milstein w/the CSO/Martinon in Orchestra Hall, 220 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60604, USA!! For Violinists familiar with this Classic Violin Concerto, do listen carefully to both the LIVE here and then the later recording of 1959, of Mr. Milstein with 2 different Conductor's and firstly, Giulini in the Prokofiev #1, then on the other side of the EMI 33 & 1/3 rpm Recording, with Raphael Fruhbeck de Burgos in the Second Violin Concerto of Prokofiev, which is Milstein suave with Giulini, in the latter performance, and which NM would later walk me through with all sorts of his ideas re Prokofiev, whom Mr. Milstein had known when still in pre-Bolshevik, Russia, and then, later on when so many genius musicians/performers/composers fled then Soviet Union 'to either Berlin or Paris, and especially Paris, where Diaghelev, presented his many beyond brilliant artists in concerts and later, on to the US where Sol Hurok, Impressario Plus, would bring Horowitz, plus many other geniuses from old 'Mother Russia' to NYC's Carnegie Hall in major American Debut Recital's!!! Among those were Toscha Seidel; and of course, Jascha Heifetz, in his fabled CH Recital Debut of October 27, 1917, aged 16, and of course The World of Violin Went Crazy!!! Back to Nathan Milstein, and "the long distance runner", I nick named Mr. Milstein, who continued playing at a level of Grand Artistry and technical prowess unknown to Any Violinist Before or After til 83! Today is a Special Day, International Women's Day, March 8th, 2023, with Milstein featured on my FB Page, by FB Friend, Mark Mt Chryseum, who posted this remarkable present for me to hear!!! Time running out, so one must defer to thanking the gentleman who posted this beyond wondrous performance of my mentor, Mr. Hector Rare Recording!!! I don't know your actual name, but Thank You with Roses for posting this and as others are writing, I look forward to more of Nathan Milstein, whom I knew for 24 years and was his Assistant for his Zurich Nathan Milstein Violin Master Course/s circa 1970-72, and then on 'Standby' throughout the 1970s ~ To be sure, Nathan Milstein, brought the genius of Prokofiev in his Violin Concerto No. 1 to its Peak of Stature which none IMO, will ever traverse again ... I attended this concert at Orchestra Hall in 1968. When I went back stage following the performance to greet Milstein, he was not very happy with the performance. He was also displeased with the review from the night before. He asked me what I thought and I told him it was great. Truth be told, he was suffering from bursitis at this time in his life and he wasn't playing his best, though it was still quite marvelous.

I think he was angry and frustrated die the coughing lady and some unexpected out of tune little parts.
Any violinist like him would feel the same.
HMM you are a good story maker.
I didn’t know he suffered from bursitis. 😮
I am looking forward to listening to your uploads every day:)
Gran artista.Gran violinista!!!
... another fine live-reading of Nathan Milstein/Jean Martinon : Tschaikovsky. Violinconcerto on RUclips, too...
Stupendo . Non credevo esistesse una sua registrazione dell' op. 19 - Grazie !!!
amazing!
