    BEWARE OF SCAMS: comments from accounts using my profile picture asking you to message them on an app because you won a prize. This is happening on a lot of RUclips channels now, but they don’t seem to be doing anything to stop it so please spread the word and warn people you know. Thank you!!!

      I received one as well they had the pict of or symbol being use from the you tuber (received 2 from different fragrance channels yours and Gentscents) stating I had won a package and to use the app telegram to get in touch with them. I am grateful that the fragrance community is communicating with each other because that is how I realized it was a scam and didn't respond. On a different note I appreciate the videos Aaron as a perfumer you give unique perspective, plus you give shapes to the different notes, ( which help me picture the fragrance) and you convey your thoughts very well. Maybe one day you can talk a little on the different types or categories that fragrances are classified by ex. Fougere , oriental (no offense meant) and others. I'm still a novice collector but really enjoy the world of fragrances and the imagery/feelings they can help create or bring back. Stay safe and thank you from Texas 👍

    You are spot on right on the money by classifying it as "oriental", Aaron.
    In fact, Encens Mythique is one of the "Les Absolut D'Orient" line from Guerlain.
    I fell in love with it in 2019 and since been one of my very private perfumes.
    Oh and the pronunciation is "anson miteek" which means "mythical incense".
    And speaking of Amber, there's a sister perfume to this one called "Ambre Eternel" which you would have loved, butrt unfortunately it was discontinued. It seems connoisseurs noses are just a few these days!

    First comment!
    I think perfumery has their name for a reason, when someones mentions "Oriental" I instantly think of spices, rare woods, high quality, exotic. I think we should keep naming them "Oriental" it's a pride to have a part of the world influence something and have it named after it.

  • @muntster
    @muntster 2 года назад +12

    The term "oriental" within the art of perfumery is fine. It is not offensive. Keep using it and ignore anyone who says they are offended by it. They are just a small group of activists who are permanently offended and live off of making everything into a problem. You can't make them happy, so don't even try.
    Also, never forget that in order to speak the truth you have to risk being offensive to those who don't know or like what the truth is.

      the idiot snowflakes who are always offended are always LOOKING to be offended.
      Let them be offended.
      They can shut up and go be offended elsewhere.
      An oriental frag is exactly that and the ongoing moronic cancel culture nonsense needs to be shut down and these fools need to be shown for the snivelling wimps they are.
      Next thing they'll expect that "Amber" frags will be offensive to former piratical actors ex-spouses who lose court cases and whine about it. LOL

    I've never met a single person who was actually offended by the term Oriental but I've met several people who tell me it's supposedly offensive. Orient = East and its opposite, Occident = West .. Oriental means "of the East" .. just as Occidental means "of the West" .. I think too many people are more concerned with the potential of being offensive without ever asking why than they are picking up a dictionary.

    For the longest time I was told that “oriental” was offensive when used to refer to people because it was a term only used to describe goods from the orient (rugs, spices, etc.)
    I’ve noticed recently that “Amber” has been used in the place of “oriental”, and it really doesn’t make any sense to me.

    • @oisnowy5368
      @oisnowy5368 2 года назад +2

      You are right. It does not make sense. Especially when you consider from where amber was imported during the ancient times. Oriental just means eastern, assigning all sorts of extra bad meanings to it is just semi-intellectual, extreme leftist American/British postmodern racism. Don't let those people hijack words.

    I think this is a nice, clean, elegant rose-patchouli scent. I like it and it gets not enough attention in comparison to less strong and complex ones like Gris Dior or Moonlight Patchouli. It‘s worth trying for sure. After watching your review, yes it def. has a cold feel. I think that whats makes me put this into Gris Dior and Moonlight Patchouli category. These cold fragrances give off such a professional vibe. It makes me think of a successful woman in a suit working in corporate and making a lot of CoInZ. She is tough but she has a romantic soul and very good taste.

    I do have this perfume, quiet loud and VERY animalic on my skin, so much so that I can't actually enjoy it on me. It does have incense-y quality but not smokey and rather the aromatic facets of an incense. It's masterfully blended but I'd say test this before purchase because it can be quiet ocean-y and animalic.
    I do have an older batch 2018-19 maybe but it's not quiet up my alley, unless sprayed very sparingly.
    Patchouli Ardent is amazing as it's smoky and sweet, although the initial blast is quiet harsh it does take a dramatic turn for the better.
    Thanks Aaron for the detailed, Accurate and as always engaging review!

      @@ChristopherSisk It's really quite silly, isn't it? It's a non-issue. Had any of them told me, "Woah woah woah, cool it with that O-word shit!", then I'd think twice. It's not like we're calling people Oriental, either. We're not saying, "chinamen style" perfume, or "I'm into gooky fragrances"... It's oriental. Oriental. It seems more absurd the more you try to explain it. If you think thays bad, it gets worse. Listen to this...
      Someone in one of my swap groups on facebook the other day (I wish I was making up what I'm about to say...) got offended because a girl described a perfume as "slightly masculine, but comforting, like a protector. A handsome but pure man who wraps his arms around me and keeps me safe" (or close enough to that). Another girl chimes in asking why there isn't a "trigger warning", because, "some women get trigger by the idea of protective men. Women who are independent and fight against thw patriarchy don't want protective men". Just a whole diatribe. Other people chimed in and AGREED with this crazy screwball.
      With taking offense, when there's a will, there's a way.

    I got this one blind, because of all the 'masterpiece' reviews. Honestly, I'm a little disappointed. It has been said on other forums that Encens smells like the perfume section of a department store - and it's unfortunately true. There are some great notes waiting to get through, but it's ultimately a fresh rose fragrance with some dark flair. I layer this one with Incense Intense by 'Orange, just to twist it's corners to the dark side more. Or even Encre Noir over the top, to dull the Joan Collin's vibe with some sharp, birch notes.

Perhaps it reminds them of their mothers submitting to old sexual mores? It's okay in bedtime fragrances where submission in private might even be encouraged, but be cautious with it in daytime fragrances/unisex. Could it be modernized/freshened? I love the note too and look forward to trying Mythique soon and I like a touch of Ylang, I want to be that unicorn man looking for a mythical unicorn woman so that I can use the Ylang Ylang to separate them and have been looking for a compelling reason to try a Guerlerain. I, personally, don’t care much about the word being used to describe inanimate objects. However, if ‘Oriental’ means Eastern then where is it East of in our globalized world? The term would make more sense in a flat world, but we’re not on a flat earth.
    Also, I can see issue with lumping cultures that span from the Middle East/North Africa all the way to the eastern-most tip of Japan. (Those a lot of different cultures to put into one category!)

    For many years, in politically correct terminology, the word 'Oriental' was used to describe items or objects and 'Asian' is used when referring to people. I think that makes sense. If it's changed, I'd like to know myself. Also, Oriental is used to describe a style of perfumery - I'm not sure if that has changed; I have not heard about an official change to this terminology. Love your reviews! Take care, Ginny 😘😘😘

    This to me paints the picture of a cold Saturday morning drive on the pacific coastline with ocean views and wifey has a bouquet of pink rose and freshly picked nectarines sitting by the hand break.

    In my opinion oriental is fine as someone new to perfumery, having the names of classic classifications change would be confounding. But that's just me I guess.

    Hi Aaron,
    Guess the first Guerlain's fragrance review u ever did? So glad you picked let's say kind of most distinct one, I was so lucky to score a bottle of old packaging at a killer price!!
    it only required me to do one spray which made my better half complemented few times through out our journey (mind you she dont do complementing every fragrances I wore 🙂🤭)
    hard to describe its genre since it has unusual structure of notes which are well put together aldehydes ,rose,incense,marine / ambergris

    Thank you very much for your beautiful reviews!
    You really improved and get more and more professionell with your videos.
    I would really appreciate if you could test xerjoff-irisss they say that this perfume is the most expensive one in terms of production so I would be very curious about your professionell opinion on this one. Especially cause it's one of the most expensive ones xerjoff has.
    I think the most expensive one would be xerjoff Ceylon. I own this one and it's just beautiful.
    Greetings from Germany and keep up the good work.
    In future I'm going to take a look at your Produktline. You seem to have some nice bangers.

    I can understand how someone from the Far East could feel slighted by the term Oriental. It's hard not to personalize the word if someone lives in a culture where they are the minority with minority pressures. Despite their feelings I often look to them as superior. Not only that, I also include things from their cultures. Scents are just another example of the beauty that has come out of millennia of artistic refinement. I spell Oriental in the case of perfumes with a Capitol O. Its a highly regarded Perfume style not a person. I like this description of Oriental perfume from FragranceX;
    "When you think of oriental scents think herbs and spices or dry, powdery, resin notes. Opulent and heady, these notes are often times softened with amber or sweet notes. It’s common to describe this family as exotic and seductive."
    Nothing derogatory there. Something to be proud of in fact. I hold my Asian friends in highest esteem.

    Nothing wrong with the Oriental term, it is what it is! Just more pointless wokery-pokery. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Interested in this one, will check it out, thanks for the review.

    I blind bought this.
    It’s a polarising scent when you’re used to designer fragrances which generally are designed to be as crowd pleasing as possible.
    Guerlain Encens Mythique is reminiscent of what people may have smelled there great grandma wearing decades ago, being aldehydic and ambergris-salty heavy.
    The polarising way it smells can be tamed by layer it with something sweet-vanilla, get creative.

    Not saying that it’s the most reliable benchmark, but if I search Google for Chinese takeaways, there are 5 within a 4 mile radius that feature the word “oriental” in the name. Most will be owned and run by people of Chinese ethnicity and I find it difficult to imagine a Chinese person using a pejorative term in the naming of their own business.

    Aaron - musks are something that I struggle with in perfumery. If I dose them too low, I get no effect. However if I dose too high it completely flattens my formulation - how do you find the right percentage to use?

    Thanks again for educating us Aaron, you are truly the professor of fragcomm😁! Would it be possible to compare fragrances in a review? Based on your description of this fragrance, i would say this is similar to Xerjoff's Zefiro. I would love to hear your thoughts on this

    This perfume reminds me Dior Poison. And I don't understand why would calling a perfume oriental would be bad. I'm from Turkey (it could be considered middle east), I would never be offended by that.

    • @jeremyhinze8837
      @jeremyhinze8837 2 года назад +4

      It isn't, it's a ridiculous argument. Oriental isn't being used in the context of perfumery to describe a race or a people. I think it is derived from a Latin word which literally means "from the east" or "from where the sun rises" people should really stop hunting for reasons to be offended.

The negative people focus on negativity and see it in everything. lets stay positive and lets enjoi in our oriental fragrances.
